Sixteen Years.
That’s a long time, no matter how old you are. For me, that’s about half of my life so far. So much can happen in sixteen years. Just think about where you were in 2006 and what the world was like. The smart phone you might be reading this on hadn’t even been invented yet. But for all the change that happened in those sixteen years, there was one constant: the Sacramento Kings missing the playoffs, year after year. Until now.
It certainly wasn’t supposed to take this long. I certainly didn’t think so when as a bright-eyed, naïve 19 year old, I found a fan site called “Sactown Royalty” and decided to share my thoughts on how Jason Thompson and Spencer Hawes might be the new Chris Webber and Vlade Divac. For most of my fandom at that point, the Kings were NBA royalty, the “greatest show on court”. It was only in the last few years that the franchise had begun to take a turn for the worse. But with Geoff Petrie at the helm, he’d get the team right back on track sooner rather than later wouldn’t he? And I wanted to be there, writing about the team I loved so much as they ascended back atop the mountaintop to right the wrongs of 2002 and capture that elusive ring.
Slowly but surely, hope and optimism would fade. Year after year the Kings would seemingly find themselves no closer to getting out of the cellar. A year became two became five became ten. There were fun moments, to be sure, but they were few and far between, outweighed by various bouts of incompetence and indifference from a once proud franchise. Kings fans rallied like crazy to prevent the team from moving, hoping that with new ownership, a new building and new management, things would improve. But whatever improvement came was marginal at best, a pig with a new shade of lipstick.
The years dragged on, and many fans reached the end of their rope. It’s hard to blame them. At some point, the fun is gone and what’s the point of watching or supporting a product that isn’t fun? The only thing that kept me going, and I know the same can be said for many of you, is the shared commiseration with my fellow Kings fans, holding on to that last shred of hope that this drought couldn’t possibly last forever but supporting each other while it did.
I knew the Kings would get back to the playoffs some day, but I was resigned to it being almost as much of a letdown as anything else. We had seen the Kings make “win-now” moves time and time again in order to try to break down the drought and those short-term moves had long-term ramifications that kept setting the team back. I saw the Kings becoming a 7th or 8th seed by the skin of their teeth and then flaming out in the first round, the drought technically broken but the franchise still a long way from being actually relevant.
When the Kings traded Tyrese Haliburton for Domantas Sabonis last year, there was immediate vitriol from both within and without the fanbase. For many, this was yet another short term gamble, a desperation move from a desperate team. After sixteen years of abject failure, the Kings were definitely considered guilty before being proven innocent. New GM Monte McNair was unproven, and this was his first real big swing. Haliburton had the looks of a major star in the future, and even getting a player of Sabonis’ caliber was seen as incredibly risky, especially with his contract up in a couple of years. But the Kings were stuck in neutral, and McNair needed to do something drastic.
The Kings were also lambasted by many in the summer when they lucked into the 4th pick of the draft and opted to take Keegan Murray over Jaden Ivey. Ivey was younger and perceived to have far more upside, but the Kings viewed Murray as a great prospect who would fit in perfectly beside Sabonis and Fox. The conversation started to change a little in Summer League when Murray gave a preview of what was to come with his sharp shooting from outside.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYiCwUTad9w
McNair had more than just player personnel to add. Mike Brown was hired to be the latest in a long line of head coaches attempting to right the ship, and he was viewed as a solid if unspectacular hire at the time. Brown had experience and a championship pedigree, but it had been a while since he himself had coached a team, spending most of his recent tenure as an assistant with Golden State. The Kings had gone through 11 coaches in 16 years, with none of them lasting for more than a couple of years. The Kings needed to nail this coaching hire more than ever, and in Brown, they knocked it out of the park.
With Brown at the helm, and other new additions like Kevin Huerter and Malik Monk, there was a sense that this team was going to be better. How much better, nobody knew at the time, but the good vibes were palpable in preseason. Then came an 0-4 start to the season that made every Kings fan think “Here we go again”.
But this time it was different. This time, the Kings didn’t break under adversity. They fought back. The Kings went 10-2 over their next 12 games and never looked back. In their only scheduled nationally televised game on TNT, the Kings blew the roof of Golden 1 Center, throttling the Brooklyn Nets 153-121 in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicates. The Kings began putting up historic numbers, as in most efficient offense in NBA history numbers.
Beyond Brown’s steady hand at the helm, much of that was due to the fantastic play of Sacramento’s two stars: Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox. Sabonis rightfully got a lot of the attention at the beginning as the newcomer in the big trade, and it was well deserved, as he was the ultimate force multiplier. The Kings run most of their offense through Sabonis, and whether it’s dribble hand-offs, pick and rolls or attacking the basket by himself, he’s constantly maneuvering the defense to get the best opportunity for the Kings. Sabonis has amassed 12 triple-doubles this season as a Sacramento King and to put in context how ridiculous that is, Chris Webber is the franchise leader (Sacramento-era) in triple-doubles, and he had 14 in his entire tenure with the team. Oh, and he’s done most of this playing with a broken thumb that he sustained in December.
While Sabonis has definitely elevated the team, no individual player has elevated their own game as much as De’Aaron Fox. Fox has been the face of the franchise ever since being drafted by the Kings in 2017, but while he has put up good numbers and been a good player, he hasn’t been good enough to carry the team to the top. Many fans and pundits felt that Fox was the player the Kings should have traded last February instead of Haliburton.
But with Haliburton gone and a multi-talented big man in Sabonis to play off of, as well as a myriad of shooters, Fox has taken his game to new heights. He’s averaging career-highs in both scoring and shooting efficiency, and no player in the entire NBA has been as clutch. Fox not only has the most points scored in the clutch of any player all season, he’s also been the most efficient player in the clutch. Time and time again this season when the Kings have needed to close a game out, it’s been De’Aaron Fox who has stepped up and carried the Kings past the finish line.
For Fox, this is redemption. No player on the team has been here longer, or faced as much adversity in his career. Fox came into the league wanting to be drafted by the Kings and change the narrative. He’s kept his promise.
What has happened this season is nothing short of magical. In terms of highlights, this season has enough for a decade. Multiple game-winners. Multiple win streaks. De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis becoming Sacramento’s first double All-Star selection for the Kings since Brad Miller and Peja Stojakovic. A 176-175 double overtime victory over the Clippers that was the second highest scoring game of all time.
Beyond the play on the court, the team is having fun off the court as well. The introduction of the Beam was marketing genius, and what could have been a funny gimmick has instead become a fully embraced tradition, with “Light the Beam” chants erupting not only in Golden 1 Center, but in arenas all around the league. Fans love seeing which player gets the “DPOG” chain after games and the postgame celebrations from the locker room after big wins. Sellouts are back to being standard, and you can see Kings gear being worn everywhere in Sacramento, even on days when the Kings aren’t playing. Last night, after the Kings clinched the game on the road, fans gathered outside Golden 1 Center anyway to celebrate.

Sixteen years leaves a lot of emotional scarring. As recently as the All-Star break, with the Kings sitting at 3rd in the Western Conference, there were fans who were fearful that it would all come crashing down. Even I, writing this article technically before the Kings have officially clinched, have a small, tiny voice in the back of my head saying “Don’t you dare write this article because you’re just going to jinx them into losing every game from here on out”.
But this team is for real. For their part, the team is doing a good job of not making a huge deal out of this. For them, making the playoffs is just the first of many expectations that have been met and not an end goal in and of itself. This team has higher aspirations and I’m looking forward to seeing them prove themselves under the bright lights of the postseason.
Who knows what happens from here or how long it lasts, but I’m planning on enjoying it for as long as I can. This may be the most fun I’ve had as a Kings fan in my entire life. Moments and memories like these are why we fought so hard to keep the team here. And somewhere, there’s a kid watching Domantas Sabonis pass the ball to Kevin Huerter for three, or imitating De’Aaron Fox crossing up a defender, or chanting “MURRAY” along with the crowd on the TV who is becoming a fan for life, just like many of us did watching Mitch Richmond or Jason Williams or Chris Webber or many others who have donned the purple and black.
So savor the moment, Kings fans, and forget about the last sixteen years. This is Year One.
I am happy.
Release the playoff tickets.
Would be awesome if we can arrange group tickets to get some discount. Hoping to catch 1 game for first round.
Upper level was around $700 a ticket last I checked and you had to buy two. I’m in for a group discount. Lol
Yea I don’t know what we’re going to do (buddy I often go with).
A lot of reflection and emotion today. I was as down on this ownership as anyone. Seems to me having the right GM is the most important thing in professional sports.
Over the course of the season I’ve slowly deleted every critical photoshop I created over the years, as I save everything. I probably only have two or three left.
I may not get as high and as low as some of you, but I watch every game and go to probably ten games each year.
I’m happy to call SAC home over the last 23 years, and I have no doubt when I’m old and grey (D’oh!), I’ll look back on this period as one of the most rewarding stories in my life as a sports fan.
For me, I ALWAYS believe my team will win, no matter the backstory. Always. Therefore, I am completely convinced this team will make it to the NBA Finals this year. I’ll believe that until the clock shows all zeros.
Year 1 of no Vivek-hate for me. Winning fixes everything. Thank you Ranadive for fixing the Titanic. Now please give us reasonable playoff tix pricing 😀 HHB those has to be scalper pricing right?
https://www.nba.com/kings/playoffs has option for Presale? Let’s see once released. I am hoping for Lowerbowl baseline lets see if that breaks the bank for 3 tix 😀
My playoff ticket pricing for rounds 1 & 2 is fairly reasonable – roughly +20% and +35% compared to my season tickets (potential WCF/Finals is a different story).
I’d expect the non-season-ticket seats to be similarly reasonable (definitely more of a markup though) on the primary market if you can get them. The resale market, though, is going to be insane.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day…
It’s all great to see. Happy for all the fans.
And, as I’ve said too often, the formula for winning was always simple……Vivek to put his ridiculous ego aside and hire a real GM and let him work. V tried to interfere but has backed off.
Thank god. That’s all it ever take some professional sports. And owner who knows how to delegate power.
Kings baby
My tickets in Section 121 are $135/seat for the first round and $155 for the second round.
???? ????
Thanks Buffalo and Mike for the insight. Those prices are not too bad. I thought first round would be more. Enjoy the playoffs! We are jealous! 😀
I’ll see how much I can get for primary market if I can get them. Resale will be too crazily marked up.
you take Venmo?
Nice try! I’m trying to sell my April 7 Warriors tix to help fund the playoffs. FWIW, WCF tix are $209 and finals are $331. Normally, my tix average $109 for Row N. Next year back in section 120 Row H.
120 H is nice! Enjoy! Do you mind sharing how much that seat cost for next year?
Around $6800 comes to mind. Again, that is for one seat. My buddy gets one and we trade so we each get 21 games a year. I used to have 120 Row A and that was almost 9800 I think for one. This year I paid $4687 for 121 Row N. Next year it goes up to $5071, but I’m leaving that seat for 120H.
If I can get extra tix from the Kings, I’ll post them here with a 25% premium added on. I think that’s reasonable.
Where are you all getting your $$ numbers from??? Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places. I’m seeing prices of at least $350 for upper bowl and cheapest for lower bowl is $620. For non season ticket holders, do you mind helping pointing me in the right direction? I really want to be there game 1!
You’ll need to buy them directly through Kings pre-sale (or find a season ticket holder that you know or buy season tickets for next year)- everything you see elsewhere is secondary market and is going to have bonkers pricing.
I tried twice to post the picture of my tix for each round. Didn’t go thru. My price is as a STH. So it is a bit cheaper than if I was not. Directly from the Kings. Not resale. I’ve been charged $540 total for one seat for 4 games. I have a partner who does the same. We each get one seat and swap back and forth all season.
That seems more than reasonable, that seems generous.
Too close to Rob for my tastes! I’d pay another $135 to just have him put his pants on.
We can put away old memes 🙂

It’s been 84 years since we could put away old memes.
One of my favorites:

Akis,
So glad you got the first word after all your work and loyalty. Thanks for helping us relive this year even as it continues, and relive how it came to pass. There have been so many great moments. I have to look at the 176-175 box score just to remind myself that it really happened. And after so many botched opportunities to build something we need to take a moment to see just how many moves, how many bricks in the wall, had to be in place for a season like this, one of the most memorable in team history, to happen.
Monte.
Domas.
Mike.
Kevin.
Keegan.
Malik.
Each of these is crucial, and none was more crucial than Monte’s insight that a Fox/Sabonis tandem would succeed and Mike’s decision to run the dribble handoff/multi-screen offense through Sabonis. I never thought there would be another Kings offense I enjoyed as much as the Adelman/Vlade/Webb/Peja and company corner offense. That’s why it’s my TKH handle. Next year, I’m changing it to dribblehandoff.
We just got to live through the building of a playoff caliber team. I don’t know how many people besides Monte thought it would happen. I know I didn’t. I thought they should trade Fox, not so much because I didn’t think Fox could make the Kings great but mostly because I thought the Kings couldn’t make Fox great. I was wrong twice and I couldn’t be happier. Pour one out for the new Mr. Clutch, The Ox, and company, and light that beam!
Ive held out purshasing Kings merchandise or setting foot into G1 until Vivek produced a playoff product worth spending money on. My boycott is over.
Although I’ll never be as emotionally invested in a Kings team as I was during the Adelman years, it’s nice to see the Sacramento NBA franchise sitting statistically at the upper echelon of the league.
To the younger fans, coming from a 37 year old who was 13 when the Kings traded Mitch for Webber in what I thought was one of the worst trades ever at the time…I hope you get to enjoy this ride of success into adulthood like many of us did. When the Kings last made the playoffs, they held one of THE LONGEST PLAYOFFS STREAKS in the league…even 8 years of meaningful basketball can be fleeting. Enjoy every minute of it.
I am so happy for you, Aykis.
So many years at the bottom. It feels very strange to look up and see some light.
I just deleted my Talkathon bookmark. I’m sure the overwhelming urge to press the “Sim Lottery” button will pass in time. I plan to start a support group for any of the rest of you who may need help with this.
“END OF LOTTERY”
Dammit!

Well, how the hell am I supposed to know my odds of winning the lottery now?!?
Whatever the percentage of ZERO happens to be is your answer. I know yout don’t care too much for math so I’ll let you Google that when your mind is prepared for the answer.
I still check tankathon time to time just to see who the players around the Kings range are. I admit I’m not used to seeing the Kings at around the 20-ish spot. I believe they are slated at 24. It’s early but man I would LOVE for the Kings to grab Sidy Cissoko. 6’8 wing who can potentially replace Barnes (assuming he re-signs) after a couple of years. Noah Clowney is also a potential pick for the Kings, 6’10 and has a 7’3 wingspan. Can shoot the 3 at a decent clip.
I like Clowney’s defense, but he isn’t even a decent 3PT shooter. He shot 29.4% from 3.
The West is such a scrum after the top 3. Seeds 4-11 could completely flip-flop and scurry around each other. Anyone could end up in the 6th seed; or winner of the 7-8 play-in to contest the Kings.
I’ll go out on a limb and say the Clippers fall back and the Kings get them as an opening round opponent.
I’d just love to see the Lakers and Warriors face each other in the play-in, but I doubt it happens. I too think the Warriors will overtake the Clips for the #5 spot. A Suns/Warriors first round series would be epic.
Agree on Suns/Warriors. You’ve got the KD going against one of his old teams he had the most success with, the budding Klay/Booker rivalry, CP3 and Draymond antics, and Steph Curry. Fascinating stuff.
If we get Kings/Clippers, do we get games in the 140’s? 150’s?
The roster for the first year of the drought:
and if you want to see the rosters for every season after that:
https://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/SAC/
It’s a shame that SA-R was never physically right once he got here. He was a really good player, and had he been healthy, playing with Martin, Miller, and even very-much-on-the-downslope Bibby, that’s a pretty solid group of starters.
But who cares? These are the glory years.
Pretty crazy too that Shareef’s only playoff appearance was that year with the Kings.
I didn’t realize that! I guess spending the better part of your career with an expansion team will knock a hole in your playoff aspirations.
A Douby-ous roster
I cried last night.
I live in New York, where Knicks fans think they’ve had it worse than anyone (they’ve made the playoffs twice in my 12 years living here), and friends patted me on the back in congratulations.
But they don’t get it. It’s not just about the bad years of a bad team and bad coaches and bad management. That’s one thing. They’ve never had to seriously entertain the prospect of the Knicks ceasing to exist.
We have. I went to a game in Denver when I was certain it would be my last chance ever to see the Sacramento Kings. They lost.
The feeling I had last night was so much more than a historically bad team finally winning. It was… Here We Stay.
YES.
That is a very important point you made that all the media love hasn’t mentioned. It’s not just the playoff drought, it’s all of the relocation stuff that fans fought through to keep the team as well.
Fox has mentioned that when he made that video about the playoffs. He gets it.
Amick’s article in The Athletic talked about the relocation saga, but it makes sense that he’d be the writer to mention it.
Ziller mentioned it in his GMiB as well.
I never saw that. Thanks for linking it.
Nice write up.. oh my 20 year old son called me last night and was teary-eyed and excited, he’s heard stories about all the great games I went to before he was born, and how raucous ,the crowds were an Arco, the pain of being at game seven of the 2002 WCF and the years f torture that came with it. This just feels good, a great group of guys that are super easy to root for the team that seems genuinely excited about what it means for us fans
I’m honestly shocked by how much Brown and the players talk about how much it means to the fans. They can’t fully GET IT, but I agree it’s genuine. And that’s part of what makes this all so special.
Great post, thank you.
And thank you KINGS!!!
Things that happened in my life during the Kings’ playoff drought:
It’s uh, been a while! Congrats to everyone who’s ridden this 16 year train!
Sorry for my ignorance and if this may be perceived as an insensitive question but what is DWR?
oh yeah! acronyms! I now work as a regulator for the State of California, Department of Water Resources.
I work to help groundwater use throughout the state be sustainable and usable both now aand into the future.
But I was told that there is no more water in California?
And how the heck did you lose 70 pounds? I am only good at gaining weight.
Quitting drinking was 33% of it.
Leaving a toxic profession (consulting) was 33%
I had a noteworthy case of SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) that once I finally got to treat it, fixing most of that was the other 33% for the most part.
Ever since COVID hit I’ve found I had more time and energy to spend on myself rather than my employer’s profits, and I spent a lot of time healing my body/psyche/mind after 45 years of a life of stress.
It’s been an incredible journey.
Kudo’s to you.
I have no choice but to spend my energy on my employer’s profits. He’s such an a-hole.
I escaped! I wish our societies were less totalitarian, extractive, and intentionally cruel.
No escape possible here.
I see him every time I look in the mirror.
I’ve done some work with DWR over the years, my ex-wife as well, making videos, salinity.
Sober since 2009 myself. Probably explains why I’m so grumpy. 🙂
yay! we track salinity as part of sustainability. California has a surprising number of places where the groundwater is salty.
[notices the Pacific Ocean]
When the hell did that get here?
…some of the salt from the Pacific Ocean got trapped in geology, and comes out when it gets rained on! (50+ miles inland from the current location of ocean). Some places in the state are ‘terminal basins’ where water flows in and then evaporates, leaving the salt, and some of it is due to concentration of salts and contaminants from fertilizers like in the central valley.
Tulare Lake is coming back this year so we’ll catch a small break on that down there for a bit.
I’m Sober since. 2012. Congrats..the grumpiness is probably due to Philly..
Congrats W2W.
Well done Marty and W2W.
I am twenty three years now.
For anyone that is interested there is a great book that helped me, “The Thinking Man’s Guide to Sobriety”. It has been updated in title and content.
Nice.. thanks for the suggestion I will pick it up!
And congrats to you as well!
Good on ya, Mook! Sounds like you’re finally living your best life.
Just curious, with so many visits to Burning Man, what’s your preferred method for eliminating pubic lice?
Congrats on all a your milestones,, and hopefully happiness with each of them
Congratulations on what have hopefully been some really positive life changes! That’s inspiring.
At the beginning of the season while four out of the five mookies were thinking play-ins following the national media narrative, that Fifth Mookie was shoutin’ FINALS!
It’s good to see you posting again man.
“Fuck it! We deserve this!!!” Feels damn good to get that monkey off our backs. My oldest was born in ’06 and my youngest ’09. They definitely seem to have grown up faster than the Kings drought felt!!! When I was in college at HSU, Kings fans would head to Sidelines bar to gather or home parties and watch the games. Those electric times were amazing. Hopefully this is the first of many glory years to come. It feels good to be good again!
I seriously cannot wait to watch every episode of THE RUN back to back once it’s out. Just a dream season. Could not have scripted it better thus far myself. I LOVE THIS TEAM
I was born in San Jose in the 80s, and was perfectly positioned to choose the Warriors, Giants, and Niners for childhood fandom, but I chose the Kings, Raiders and A’s.
The Raiders broke my heart, the A’s are likely to do the same, and yet it’s the Kings who have caused me the most misery.
Finding Internet cafes in odd hours only to be perpetually disappointed by the same losing box scores. Sobbing in the belly of a ship after watching what I thought was their last game in Sacramento. Agonizing over whether buying King’s baby clothes would be setting my boys up for a lifetime of sports misery. Moving back to California after 11 years away, only for them to draft Bagley over Doncic in my first week back. A decade and a half of learning numbness and separation to make the losing sting less.
The remaining weight of it all washed away in an emphatic ass-kicking, screamed out so loud I woke both my kids and my visiting parents. I don’t know if I’ll ever feel the elation of a championship, but I know fans of winning franchises don’t feel the relief I feel now. I love that fucking beam and God help me I love this fucking team.
When Bjelica said “Fuck it, we deserved this,” I bought a t-shirt of it and thought “I’ll wear it when we’re finally good and make the playoffs.” I did not think it would be like this and this soon!
Fuck it, wear your shirt
Hat tip to every member here that has endured any or all of the last 16 years. You deserve this moment.
And to the staff here, much admiration. For years you have invested a true labor of love into a team that was a labor of loathe. Have fun with the transition of writing about potential playoff matchups instead of potential lottery picks.
Yes.
I appreciate all the staff (except Greg)!
Please don’t exclood.
but Greg ruined my speleeng
Well, we can’t be slapping everyone’s back and not give some appreciation to you Rob, and Section214 (probably your pants to, if I am being honest, they are practically a character in this saga of fandom stretching back to the original StR days), for your humor, your occasional articles, your insights, and for being such a loyal fan. Cheers old friend, I have had more fun this season than any I can remember.
We saw 1951 and Otis, we saw FifthMookie, I am hoping HoustonJP makes an appearance on this thread. I can’t wait to hear from El Ron.
Rise the Hot Hand!
Until someone eats a shoe …
HoustonJP is in the house.. I am waiting for JVL and Gallo too
Didn’t we have a Yoko Solo landing also?
Good call W2W.
Congratulations to you Rob, and all The Kings Herald staff, site regulars, and all long-suffering kings fans.
This day has been far too long to arrive!
GROUP HUG!!!
Not only are the Kings in the Playoffs, they will have home court advantage in the first round. That’s a big deal and even more exciting for this city. The atmosphere is going to be bonkers.
I remember in high school the first time they clinched a playoff birth with Richmond in 1996… it was like being on a different planet. They won a game against the Sonics and then missed the playoffs the next year. I think this team will be good for a long time.
BAP! BAP! BAP!
Really nice essay, covered a lot of ground, and every inch of it worth the walk.
And thank you for posting the trade thread from last year. You know people have lost their minds when I come off as being the sensible one.
I always had my Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots fandom (grew up in Maine, college outsideBoston) to sustain me during the past few years. Moved here in 2007 and only went to see the Celtics beat the Kings at first. Got super cheap season Tix in 2013 and transformed into a Kings fan over time. Just about gave up after last season. This site (and the last one too) and the rest of you losers kept me in the game. Feels good to clinch the first round home series. Gotta win at least one round then get Siakam in the off season.
Superb article. From a fan who can reliate: NowLoveThemOnceAgain (formerly UsedToLoveTheKings).
Cheers to the new handle!
All credit to the authors for this vid, a really, really good reflection of the Kings, the players, Mike Brown and all the coaches, the organization, the fans and the City of Sacramento
Awesome!!!!
Excellent
Hell of a compilation, and the first part shows that you don’t need to know shit about shit to make big money talking about the NBA.
Amen, Andy.
How do you like them receipts, Andy!
this made me laugh way more than it should
Same here
That’s incredible!
Outstanding
I wish I could upvote this more than once
Cheers JP!
To you as well my brother.
The final shot of the Sac skyline with the Beam…..!!!!
Fantastic. I loved seeing G-Man at the end saying “Together” with the team.
Perfect way to call it a wrap wasn’t it? Gary is such a treasure.
I have to say, that hit right in the heartbone.
Ending it w/Gary & then the Beam was perfect.
What an incredible video!
2006 – I was a community college student trying to find ways to make some money. I Jumped on ticket master and purchased 4 tickets to the Spurs/Kings playoffs. I flipped them on eBay for about $150 each (which was a lot of money at the time). Little did I know those tickets would be to the game Kevin Martin made his last second layup over Tim Duncan. I should have saved them and went, in hindsight. Little did I know the Kings would not see the playoffs for the next 16 years.
Akis, you’re one of the big reasons I’ve been a fan of both sites since I found STR. Always appreciate when you throw your thoughts out there.
If we went another 16 years, this season would have been worth it. I love this team. I love the fans. I love this site. Congrats to all of us crazy SOB who have stuck around year after year and got to finally see winning basketball back in Sacramento.
I’d take our situation now at this point over drafting Luka over Bagley, which feels crazy. This team feels like it’s only the beginning of what we’re in store for.
We really do deserve this. I’m excited to see the noise we make in the playoffs
” found a fan site called “Sactown Royalty” and decided to share my thoughts on how Jason Thompson and Spencer Hawes might be the new Chris Webber and Vlade Divac. ”
I am reminded that my first comment on that old site was about the signing of Ryan Hollins.
Good times.
The SacBee had a good comments section also, before STR.
Being a Kings fan: We’re either the coolest/most fun team in the league or we basically suck the other 30 years lol. Our last great team came up short and I’m thankful that I can start getting greedy and thinking about redemption for that squad. Playoffs are amazing but this city still deserves a ring. Enjoying this for now, the basketball Gods owed us haha
Kind of fitting that the Kings end their playoff drought at the exact same time California ends it’s water drought.
If it wasn’t for this community I’m not so sure I’d care or follow this team.
That my 18 year old son is excited about the Kings and we can talk hoops has been the icing on the cake
Its so odd and great to have a GM who can evaluate talent ignore the noise and can put a team together. Long may that last
Huge bonus that he did it without having to do a 3-4 tank job. threaded that needle perfectly by adding pieces rather than dumping players and adding picks.
I’ve seen a few Kings jerseys near my apartment in Los Angeles. What a time!
Remember when we tried a half dozen times to get to 5 over .500? And we’re now 16 over .500.
As you noted elsewhere this season Mike, the Kings are getting better with each game.
They can catch the Griz. I just know it. The Kings are The Hunters in spite of what the ESPN blowhards surmise.
I think Mike was right.
I feel like the team’s First Quarter malaise each game is almost a rope-a-dope moment, and they are just figuring out how they are going to beat them.
I really do think Brown has a crack staff on his bench.
It’s been a fantasy season for Sacramento and the Kings but it wouldn’t mean much to me without this community that has slogged through the losing to stand tall now with the winning.

Charmichael Dave and his crew at Sactown Sports had a great 3 1/2 hour show this morning.
I called in and told my Kings story as was everyone else. The most important thing I had on my mind was how thankful I am for all the coverage from “Sactown Sports and The Kings Herald and other sites” that allowed all Kings fans across the USA and other countries to come together over the years and share our fandom.
I am really thankful, really thankful, for the staff at TKH and the folks on this site. The best part of being a Kings fan. These are the good old days. Soak them up.
Light the beam!!!!
Apparently I was wrong about the reasonableness of the playoff ticket pricing- the word from event yesterday for new season ticket holders is that the face value on playoff tickets for new STHs is a 300%(!!!) premium for round 1 and going up from there.
Existing STHs are getting a sweetheart deal – I guess it’s karma for the years of paying to watch a soul-sucking, court-puking shit-show.
Also, it doesn’t sound like there are going to many seats available on the primary market – they got 2500+ STH subs yesterday who are guaranteed playoff tickets along with existing STHs. Next in line will be existing half-season holders, then new half-seasons (neither is guaranteed their seats but they are guaranteed to be in the building) and then whatever is left over will be offered to those who signed up for the pre-sale on a FCFS basis.
RISE THE HOT HAND walked so LIGHT THE BEAM could run.
Jesus, we’re old now.
