Kings 176, Clippers 175: Kings Battle to Earn Win in Double Overtime Thriller

Everyone check your pulses!!!
By | 150 Comments | Feb 24, 2023

Credit: Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

We’re on the back end of the All-Star break where every game matters. After lighting the beam for the home crowd last night, the Kings headed to Los Angeles to face a newly constructed Clippers team. Still anchored by Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the Clippers added surrounding pieces of Russell Westbrook, Eric Gordon, and Mason Plumlee. With the Clippers close on their heels in the Western Conference standings, this game was not expected to be a walk in the park for the Kings, but more like a drudge through deep snow. Let’s see how they did:

Quick Stats

Outcome: Kings win, 176-175

Sacramento Kings: 176 pts, 58.6% fg, 43.9% 3 pt, 80.0% ft, 33 ast, 43 reb, 15 to

Los Angeles Clippers: 175 pts, 60.2% fg, 57.8% 3 pt, 86.1% ft, 39 ast, 42 reb, 25 to

My. Freakin. Chest. I feel like I just experienced an entire seven game series in that game. From start to finish, in all 58 minutes, this game had a playoff atmosphere. On the road, on the second night of a back to back, against an insanely efficient Clippers team, your Sacramento Kings just earned themselves their most impressive win of the season. LIGHT THAT BEAM!

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
The Good
  1. Final Regulation Fight: Before I talk about anything else, I need to get this sequence off my chest. The Kings were down by 11 points with under three minutes to go in regulation, and I hate to admit this, but I had already begun to type up some sad thoughts about a hard-fought, but ultimate loss for Sacramento. And then De’Aaron Fox happened: a driving layup, followed by a perfect pickpocket on Paul George for a wide open layup (while losing a shoe in the process), suddenly brought the Kings within seven points in just 15 seconds off the clock. Following the defensive energy of his point guard, Keegan Murray then jumped in a passing lane for another steal and easy layup and suddenly the Clippers were frazzled. Normal Powell panicked and committed an offensive foul on the inbound, and suddenly it was a five point game and Kings’ ball. Some defensive stops and free throw exchanges later, the Kings ended regulation with a Malik Monk 3-pointer to send the game into its first overtime.
The Better
  1. Never Going Away: Now that I got that off my chest, I can tell you a little bit more about the game as a whole. To sum it up, the Kings just never went away. Anytime the Clippers went on a run, leading by as much as 14 points in the 4th quarter, the Kings refused to quit. It’s hard to put into words how relentless Sacramento was tonight when all the cards were stacked against them. For starters, the refs couldn’t help themselves and got involved early, putting Domantas Sabonis in foul trouble with four fouls by the 3rd quarter. The Clippers shot an incredible 60.0% (24-40) from the 3-point line in regulation. Kawhi Leonard went full automatic robot in the 3rd quarter, scoring 21 of his 44 points, and ultimately finished 16-22 from the field. Paul George logged a triple double with 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, and five made 3-pointers. Russell Westbrook completed his debut with a 17 point, 14 assist double double. Against all these odds, the Kings responded with composure, execution, and above all, grit.
the Best
  1. Making Diamonds: Under the multiple layers of pressure that this game presented, the Kings prevailed, just as diamonds do. I was most impressed by how comfortable the Kings looked in this high-level, cerebral basketball setting for 58 minutes. Not only did the Clippers execute smart, clean basketball under the brilliant brain of head coach Ty Lue, but they also displayed an entire night of incredible shotmaking. The Clippers looked like a playoff team. And right there with them for 58 minutes was the Sacramento Kings. Coach Mike Brown threw out different defensive coverages, including a zone defense that got them four consecutive stops, as well as double coverage schemes on Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. With Domantas Sabonis in foul trouble, Chimezie Metu (eight points, nine rebounds) and Trey Lyles (10 points) both had to step up and execute timely basketball plays. When challenged by one of the best teams in the West, the Kings responded and showed they are right where they belong.
The King of Kings

Two crowns are going out tonight because these two guys both deserve them and then some.

First up: De’Aaron Fox. I already described my favorite sequence of his above, when he singlehandedly sparked his entire team and city back into this game. On top of that, he did what All Stars do – unafraid of the handful of big moments that were presented to him, Fox showed off his speed and shotmaking throughout the final periods. This included his standard package of layups, floaters, and middies, the last of which ultimately pushed the Kings over to victory. Fox finished with 42 points and 12 assists on 17 made field goals.

In the moments when Fox was understandably feeling the effects of a SEGABABA and leading his team through this rock fight, he was always able to rely on Malik Monk to take over. Leading the team with 45 points on six made 3-pointers, Monk hit so many big shots tonight that I lost count, including the 3-pointer to send them into overtime. But he also did a lot of his hard work in regulation as well. During stretches where the Kings needed to claw their way back, Monk stepped up with some impressive two-man action with Domantas Sabonis and finished with six assists. Him and Fox also had a run in the 3rd quarter where they got to show off their Kentucky connection with a handful of transition highlights. Malik Monk was on a mission tonight, and he completed it in a big way.

Did you see the Detroit-Denver game in 1983? That’s literally quite similar to this one.

But…..yeah. This was a historical type of game.

Kings are down like 14 with less than 4 min left
Kayte: “There’s plenty of time”
Me: “No there’s not you idiot why do you say these things”
Kings: go absolutely nuts to tie the game

Fantastic win on a b2b away game against one of the other contenders during the most important stretch of the year.

These are one of these signature wins that can really give a team momentum. What a game!

This was the best regular season win I’ve ever seen from the Kings, and maybe for any other team that I’ve seen. The stakes were great and both teams were playing absolutely out of their minds. Fox and Monk were absolutely ridiculous in this game but pretty much everyone contributed at some point or another. Just an absolutely amazing game that I will remember for a long time.

We absolutely deserved that win. That seriously was one of the greatest games this team has won, and probably the best of the entire NBA season this year. Reminds me of when they came back from 35 points to beat the Bulls in 2009. Now we are a season high nine games over .500 (when was the last time that happened???), and the team is showing no signs of slowing down.

I love the team this season. This’ll be one game for the history books. For any Kings fans that actually got to witness that game live at Staples Crypto Arena, you are SO lucky.

My son goes to school down in LA. He got me tickets to tonight’s game for my birthday. My flight got canceled due to weather. I called him and said I wasn’t gonna make it, but there was one flight still boarding and I got on at the last minute. He got tickets 4 rows back from courtside by the Kings bench. It was the best game I have ever been to!! Light the Beam!!!

No better game to sum up the resiliency of the team than this one. They knew how big of a statement they could make and responded to every haymaker the Clips threw at them. They’re ready for this brutal schedule the rest of the way. Coach Brown has them locked in

Easily the best regular season Kings game ever. Had almost forgotten what it felt like to watch such an intense Kings game like this

There was this sequence of 3 consecutive possesions where Fox made just one out of two FT’s where I feared it would slip away, but then they kept scoring with such ease that I realized that no deficit coulnd’t be overcome.

Fox and Monk did the heavy lifting, but everyone contributed.

Titanic Win to sink the Clippers!

OMG! What a win. I was exhausted watching that contest. Kawhi was unreal. PG-13 was steady amd sure. Happy for Westbrook finding a home and 14 assists in his debut and some key buckets.

But these Kings had the dog in them and wouldn’t give up the bone! Davion was super. Keegan with steals and a full court dunk. Metu with 9 boards!
7 in double figures. The Kings even beat Tony Brothers (was the fix in or something?) Oh, and 86 points in the paint!

couple of additional box score items:

4 Clippers had 5 or more 3s
Other than Malik Monk, every other of the 10 King players that had minutes in this battle had at least one steal, Fox with 5.
The +/- had only 3 in negative for Clippers: Kawhi (-7), PG (-9) and Eric Gordon (-16) all minus for LAC and only 3 plus for SAC: Keegan (+12), Metu (+12) and Monk (+22!)

That’s not that nuts relatively. Domas was a +44 against Brooklyn back in November and a +32 the first time the Kings beat the Clipps in LA back in early December.

Kings win only the 4thQ in regulation, Clips better in 60.2 FG%, 57.8 3FG%, 39 assists, franchise record 26 3s, 85.6 FT% (31/36), scored 175 points, played their best game of the season and LOST. And lost to the Kangz, Kingz, KINGS (<- it’s official for me, they are back being a real franchise! (and yet, I still fear the worst, admittedly).

My bumps are still goosed! What a game!

Both those games were were blowouts, though. So plenty of opportunity to run up the +/-. Case in point, five Kings players in that Nets game were +25 or more. What’s crazy about last night is that Monk was +22 in a one-point game. Which (unless I’m totally misunderstanding how this works), the team would have to be -21 in the 17 minutes when he was not on the floor.

I don’t take alot of stock in individual game +/- for a reason (too much wonkyness), but Monk was fabulous.

This isn’t the best game of the season. This isn’t the best game of the last 16 years. I’ve been a Kings fan for 30 years, and I remember where I was when Rich Mitchmond (the rest of you fuckers around here remember him as Mitch Richmond) put Gary Payton (the original, HOF one) in jail and dropped 37 in the house that the never ending Seattle arena saga built better known as the Tacoma Dome. The 90’s were a different time. Don’t judge. Anyhoo, I was driving back with my Dad from my Grandma’s house down Watt across the American when that game ended. I was 16.

I’ll remember exactly where I was on Hwy 16 driving from a remote site I work at occasionally and I was in Rancho Murieta when this game was finally over. And when my heart finally stopped having palpatations from nervousness and excitment from listening to G-Man call the game. I’m 43 now.

Games like this are why you are a fan. There is nothing about this game you cannot love if you’re a Sacramento Kings fan. Let me throw some numbers out there.

EIGHT EIGHT points in the paint. No, this was not the crazy dumb looking fuckers from a Quentin Tarantino Spaghetti Action flick wearing stupid Kato masks. That was how many points the Kings scored inside the Clippers painted area. EIGHTY EIGHT FUCKING POINTS. But that’s not the whopping part. The Clippers only got 48 points themselves.

FORTY ONE Fastbreak points. Let that sink in one more time. IN a game where the Kings scored 176 points, they scored 41 of those in the fastbreak. Another 133 in the halfcourt. But, sure, this is just an uptempo fastbreak time. Riiiiiight. But the Kings killed the Clippers in that area as well outscoring them 41-17 in FB points. The kids are gon’ be alright, lemme tell ya.

77 bench points for Sacramento, 61 bench points for the LA Clippers. 45 of those were of course Malik Monk. Norman Powel had 24 poitns, Nic Batum had 19 points, Terence Mann had 10 points and Eric Gordon had 8 points for the Clippers bench.

We were complaining about the Clippers and their march to the FT line early on. Rightfully so, IMO. The Clippers ended up with 36 FTA to the Kings 35 FTA.

The Kings scored 42 points off 25 Clippers TOVs while the Clippers scored 27 points off 15 Kings TOV’s. That might be a significant reason why the Kings had such a high paint points number.

The 3 point shooting. The Clippers were 26-45 from 3. The Kings?18-41.

The Kings scored 54 points off 3’s, 28 points off FT’s, and 88 points in the paint for 170 of their 176 points. The Clippers scored 78 points off 3’s, 31 points off FT’s and 48 points for 157 of their 175 total points.

I’ve said it a bunch of times here and Twitter and what not, but the more points the Kings score near the hoop (or even just from two), the much better they are. They still should take 3’s, and they still should take them at a healthy rate. But when they convert inside, and they’ve got some of their guys who have it going, good lord. You get what you got tonight.I mean, think about this for a moment. Malik Monk went off for a career high, but De’Aaron Fox has typically at least 3 or so of these games a season. Sabonis didn’t have a great night due to foul trouble, you got good performances from your other bench players but not spectacular one of a kind performances. HB & Keegan helped you win, but they weren’t spectacular either.

Oh, and Kawhi Leonard was thermonuclear hot tonight. Wanna know why he’s a 1st ballot HOF? Watch the game in the first 4 qtrs. If you don’t know why after that, don’t know what to tell you.

Have I mentioned the Kings won yet? Oh right, you knew that.

GAME. OF. THE. CENTURY. That’s what you witnessed tonight. Just in case you too young to know it.

Still can’t believe it. Still can’t fucking believe it.

good post. I re-watched the game last night and still got palpitations. I worried Kings would lose even on the second viewing.
This was an amazing game.
and Fox said it best- we worry about ourselves, not any other team.
KG21- a revisit question- should the Kings have drafted Jaden Hardy in second round last year instead of trading for 3 second round picks? and will Saha help us defend our title next year?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m not terribly concerned. But I don’t think Davion is necessarily going to be on this team next year. It’s just what it is.

I expect a shakeup on the fringe of this roster. But Jaden Hardy is so incredible….. the Mavs traded for Kyrie Irving.

As klam mentioned below this was the best win (ever I think) since the 35 pt come from behind win against the Bulls a long fucking time ago. Just incredible. Watching the 4th quarter was almost too much to watch. I had such a high adrenaline infusion towards the end of the 4th qtr I could barely breathe and as the first and finally the second OT when we won I had no idea how to feel. My mind was blown, my hopes we realized and for the first time since the good times I finally had a team to support that had GRIT and skills. Light the Fucking Beam. What an insanely great win.

This was better than that 35 pt comeback IMO. For one thing, the Bulls just simply crumbled. Plus the Kings were quite terrible for 2 1/2 qtrs of that game. I’m not sure the Clippers did in this game. It was more of a ‘holy shit how did these guys do that’ type of night. For both sides. Somehow the Kings managed to be 1 pt better.

Yes high level execution game on both sides. It felt like going to a tennis match and both players are knocking the felt off the ball and hitting lines and serving aces but one wins the 5th set tie-breaker!

Actually, I think the rule is that whichever team happens to be on the SEGABABA when the Kings are playing is the team that wins. If it’s the Kings, the Kings win. If it’s the other team, the other team wins.

Super impressive win. I can’t decide what was most impressive:

  • Kings cutting Clipper lead without Fox or Sabonis midway through the fourth
  • The 8-0 run in less than a minute from 2:46 in 4Q
  • Winning after being down six with two minutes to go in 2OT
  • Doing all of this with Sabonis in foul trouble and Metu playing 20+ (good) minutes

I love this team

Got home from work and turned on the game just before domas fouled out and I thought it was a wrap. What a f’n win. That monk rebound and dunk was my favorite play of the game. Monk needs to be in contention for 6th man of the year cause I can’t think of anyone else who brings more to their team off the bench.

We need a big man to take that pressure off of Domas in the paint for him to do his thing. He definitely tries on D but he’s limited and they also constantly give him the most ticky tacky fouls.

What a win though. What a season.

Best. Game. Ever.

Thought the tech by Mike Brown really lit a fire under the team. That’s at least the second (?) time this season a timely tech or ejection by Brown contributed the win.

Nine games over 0.500 for the first time since my daughter was an infant (she starts college in the fall!). Closer to 2nd place (1.5 games) in the West than 4th (2 games). First place in the Pacific. Do I dare dream of a second-round playoff appearance? Even more?

I would like to thank Paul George for allowing the Kings to go on a nice run at the end of the 4th. Much appreciated.

A Clippers team that was hot from 3 (they had many uncontested shots, which is probably why), full of great defenders…and they still lost. Heart is tough to measure, but I can say the Kings have lots of heart.

This game definitely a TEAM WIN….everyone stepped up…

TD hit some 3, Metu tipped the ball back to teammates and cruical steal…

But Murray is doing all little things…

Sabonis draw all the attention, and Murray move without the ball for easy basket
[imgcomment image[/img]

What a rebound, and what a coast to coast dunk by Murray
[imgcomment image[/img]

Murray did a really good job in boxing out, otherwise, Westbrook should get the off. rebound.

p.s. How come this connection bewteen Fox and Monk is not even a Top-10 play

The Kings will be up against this all season. DEN, MEM and SAC are not sexy teams that the league wants headlining the playoffs. They have 20+ games to ensure that the Lakers, Warriors, Clippers and Mavs move up the Western Conference.

I would think that a team that plays exciting basketball, with 2 all stars, a rabid fan base, and the story of trying to end a 16 year losing streak would be a great story to lean into…
But the league wants their stars and large markets to rake in cash. Lame

I can’t hate Bernhardt, because I seem to recall the sheet shows he called it close for both teams, but the other two are/were widely acknowledged to have been front office fixers. So I will forever hate them and their descendants for what they did in that game.

Pretty much right now:

The Kings will waive Okpala (knee) on Saturday, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.

Okpala hasn’t played since Jan. 28 due to bilateral knee soreness, and Wojnarowski reports that the fourth-year forward is scheduled to undergo a season-ending surgery to address at least one of the knees. Sacramento signed P.J. Dozier to a one-year contract to take Okpala’s spot on the 15-man roster. Before missing time with the knee injury, Okpala made 35 appearances (three starts) for Sacramento and averaged 1.3 points, 1.0 rebounds and 0.4 assists in 7.1 minutes.

Just as important, Suns in Milwaukee tomorrow morning 10am. Clippers also play Nuggs tomorrow in Denver. It’s possible Kings could be 4 games up on Phx in the loss column if they beat OKC tomorrow night.

I have to wait 3 days to watch it on League Pass (I live in LA). Got to see the game at Crypto, but I want to hear the broadcast calls/reactions, watch replay highlights, see details, etc…

What do I do for 3 days???

I watched some of the late first half, then the remainder of the game from the early 3rd till the end with my son.

Needless to say, we were ecstatic at the outcome.

A game that will be remembered for generations of Kings fans as the game that signaled that the franchise had turned the corner from ineptitude to one that can compete with the elite.

I never thought that I would say it, but Fox deserves consideration as the league’s MVP. His 2 steals in the final minutes of the 4th are the sort of thing an MVP does. Monk was sensational, and, as others have said, he deserves serious consideration as the 6th man of the year.

The grittiness of the team was Celtic like. Coming from behind in the 4th, the first OT and the last OT to break hearts, a very Celtic thing to do.

Brown is, of course, the coach of the year, and he makes amazing adjustments at the end of games to help bring about victories. The defense in the 2nd OT, where the Kings forced the Clippers to move the ball to Plumlee twice at the top of the key, resulting in 2 steals, was impressive, not to mention how the Kings forced the Clippers to inbound to Powell on the last play, someone not known for his ability to move the ball well, which won the game as the Clippers couldn’t get a good shot.

The true awesomeness of this game of course shows itself when the national media try to make the officials missing some calls the real story. The Clippers are just too good and have too bloated a roster and budget to even comprehend the Kings being allowed to win. The refs favor the Kings………..

A great team effort, to be sure. A couple of thoughts:

Keegan Murray is a large man in any context. I was stunned at how small he looked next to Paul George. The Clippers are a big team, and a strong one, and a seven-game series would likely kill us all.

The refs were typically awful, and I’ll throw in a bonus “fuck you” to Tony Brothers, who I am certain lays money on all Kings game that he referees. However…

Damontis Sabonis must stop, first of all, giving away dumb fouls early in games. I don’t know how I can watch a guy play like shit when he’s getting 20/10, but his head seems to be elsewhere at times. Atypically bad passes, getting stripped, and not managing his own situation when it comes to his number of fouls.

An argument can be made that the charge Plumlee took was a bad call, but Sabonis had four fouls, and just put his shoulder into his chest. He’s got to be smarter than that, especially in such important games. Fox has been magnificent, as has the bench, but the Kings are going to lose more games than they win if Sabonis has four fouls in the third quarter.

And no need to point out the steady abuse Sabonis gets in the paint, it’s the same for Fox, and really, any Kings player close to the hoop. Last night was like watching two teams each playing under different sets of rules. A game for the ages, and the NBA is going to allow it to leave a sour taste in the mouths of fans.

A win is a win, but we’ve seen our share of possible wins killed in the cradle by egregiously bad officiating. I have no faith in NBA referees to call a fair game, and even on the rare occasion where it works in Sacramento’s favor, it still undermines trust in the product.
