Chainmail: New look Kings looking good

You ask, we answer!
By | 99 Comments | Feb 13, 2022

Welcome back to Chainmail! It’s been a pretty quiet week in the Kangzdom, right? WRONG TIM, WRONG. It was quite the busy trade deadline for Monte McNair and the front office. Let’s recap, shall we?

Now, get to asking, so we can get to answering!

First question:

Who’s your top coaching candidate for this new group going into next year?

Second question:

The Ox and the Fox are now this team’s clear 1/2 punch, but we know it takes a good team (most of the time) a third guy to make some noise. What players do you think would be that good fit and could be reasonably gettable? As in, no one thinks the Kings are gonna pull off a trade for Beal or Jaylen Brown.

Jabari Smith.

If not him, maybe we can draft his son.

You mean Kings LEGEND Jabari Smith? The man who was called off the bench in the 2004 playoffs BY THE OPPOSING TEAM (Timberwolves, WCS semis) to shoot free throws because he was known to be a terrible free throw shooter, made BOTH FREE THROWS, and then sat right back down on the bench? THAT Jabari Smith? Oh hell yes. Jabari freaking Smith. Kings Legend.

I’ll always remember Jabari for that but also for being an incredibly nice guy. I swear I remember several stories of him being fantastic in the community – and my lone interaction with him he was very nice as well (I was also only 10 years old, so grain of salt).

But all of that and his son being incredible – I want Jabari Jr on this team so badly.

Which prospects would best fit into the rotation now that Sabonis is here? What skills/abilities do you think that prospect needs to bring to raise the ceiling of next year’s Kangz squad.

How will this team look like at the start of next season?

I think Barnes is a good fit with Sabonis, perhaps even a better fit than Fox. So I gotta think he stays.

Unless Holmes starts shooting threes and making them at a decent clip; I think he’s gone.

With all respect to Harkless and Holiday, we need a serious upgrade at SF.

I assume that DDV will stay, but if he doesn’t get his shooting form back, we may need someone else to help stretch the floor at SG.

The bench can use some work as well.

My shopping list looks the same as yours. It seems to me Monte’s remaining trade assets this offseason are Holiday, Davis, Holmes, DDV, Davion and Barnes, as well as the Stockton guys and picks. I think you keep Davion, DDV, and Barnes unless something wows you, and trade the other stuff for that upgrade at SF.

I wouldn’t mind making Jabari Smith or Chet Holmgren that No. 1 trade target (it seems the Kings will be winning some games, folks), but otherwise you could look at someone like Siakam.

Watching a lot of Toronto ball this year, Barnes is on my fantasy team, I wonder if Siakam is who they would move off of. It wouldn’t surprise me if OG was who they moved if they got offered a haul for them. Sort of like the Haliburton/Fox situation, sometimes you have to trade the younger/better contract to make the move you really need to take.

Assuming our pick lands in that 6-8 spot, who do you like in that range?

If you’re Monte, what’s your plan for the offseason? Who would you target in the free agent/trade market?

Kings pick will not be 6-8. Could get lottery lucky and get 1-4. But more likely around 9-10.
There is, first, the Big Bottom Four, then the streaking Pacers and the tottering Blazers, NOP and SAS. and this means that NYK and Washington don’t fall.

How much could the Kings move up in the draft by offering Holmes in a trade? It seems that D. Jones and Mets offer better rim protection. The need is for more shooting and on-ball defense at the wing.

Seems like every road game there’s pockets of Kings fans in the arena. Who are these people? Are they people who relocated out of the Sacramento area? I just can’t fathom somebody being a Kings fan who didn’t live in the area at some point in time.

From my experience living in other cities, you can always find people with ties to Sacramento.

Heck, there are a lot in Los Angeles, some of whom I’ve worked with in big sports networks that proudly wear their purple to work.

Sacramento people get around!

Big cities have pockets of people from every part of the country. Sac is no different in that regard. I was always amazed by where people came from when I lived in Seattle. It was often from places I did not expect.

Many King’s fans are associated with specific players. For example, there was a whole group of fans in Toronto due to Hedo Turkoglu who is a muslim and there is a large muslim community in Toronto. I’m sure we’ll have a sizable group of fans in Portland now due to Sabonis’s dad.

Swish41

did you see any thrades where you feel the Kings should have been involved since they would have been able to present better assets? Do you think that an aggressive bidding process for Halliburton could have yielded more than Sabonis? The idea is that he apparently was off-limits in all those leaks prior to the deadline – and probably nobody thought that this wasn’t the truth giving his potential as franchise saviour.

For next season, do you see Davion Mitchell as a starter next to Fox, a 6th man / situational closer, traded for more pressing needs (if DDV is re-signed), or something else entirely?

This is an interesting query. Personally, I have loved what Davion has done. He certainly seems to be finding his place, and not discouraged by his rough shooting start. He gets to the rim a bit better than I expected, and the defense is as advertised.

However, if he along with Holmes, a FRP, and whatever filler is needed (Holiday, Len, TD) gets a Barnes plus level player then you would have to think about it.

If Davion continues to successfully guard bigger players than he (e.g. Kyrie Irving) I can easily see him becoming at least a conditional starter except in special situations where would be a liability. If his offense improves and is consistent it will easier to justify him being a starter.

Was Haliburton unwittingly Fox’s kryptonite? Fox has done a complete 180, in both performance and demeanor, since the Hali trade.

Fox has done a complete 180

It’s been two games. Fox looks good and we have seem him have great stretches before.

What we haven’t seen yet is consistency, so that’s what I am looking for from Mr. Fox.

Spot on. I will add that Fox & Hali were at least a little redundant, and Fox no longer has Hali’s services, which allowed Fox to disappear for stretches. More accurately, with Hali around Fox did not have to work through tough stretches – he could just sort of check out. If he can match Sabonis stride for stride it could be a lot of fun. But that is larger than average size if.

I think fit is a funny thing in the NBA, especially if a FO doesn’t do a good job with coaching hires. Walton did not seem to do a lot for Fox other than encourage him to be an isolation scorer. Likewise, I don’t think Sabonis was maximized in Indiana. I think there is a fair chance these two fit together really well, and Barnes has been more engaged the last few weeks, and seems to have found even more juice the last two games.

Good lord I hope Vivek lets Monte do a thorough search for a proper coach.

It’s funny – the general opinion seemed to be that Sabonis is not an up tempo player. But his ability to board and initiate quick outlets makes him a great up tempo component. Kind of a run after misses / halfcourt offense after makes setup. His raw stats could explode here.

Domas’ went 7-9 last night, and I’m kind of ticked off he didn’t get at least 6 more shots up. Domas’ shot creation is tricky due to his limited athleticism. We knew that was an issue, but at the same time, he’s such a brilliant passer. And it’s not like Domas is one of those guys who is limited to several kinds of sets offensively like Gobert. I don’t know if I’d rather have Bam Adebayo instead of Domas but it’s close. I love both guys, though.

I knew Domas was very, very good. And I think I underestimated his ability to thrive in the open court.

Just as an aside, is there a better value to contract guy than a superstar max guy or rookie scale guy than Domas? I’m struggling to think of one.

Hali might be a better value/contract, especially given his #12 pick pay slot. That might be it, though. Desmond Bane is a nice value. Anyone drafted ‘19 or earlier only has 1 yr. or less left on their rookie deal after this season. I’m sure I’m missing someone, but it’s a very short list. Dude is making less than Buddy Hield!

I’m talking no superstar max or rookie scale contract (which Hali and Bane are). Those always are the best values. Bane, in particular, is the best late 1st round pick since Rudy Gobert and Jimmy Butler. Dude is amazing.

That’s why I asked about the other tier of players who don’t fit into one of those categories. It’s hard to think of a player with a better AAV than Domas who isn’t a rookie scale or max superstar player. Just absurd really.

Domas is not a bad athlete. He doesn’t have super long arms and isn’t the highest leaper, but he moves extremely well, sets solid screens, and uses his body to create separation in the post. He knows where to be, and has a high understanding of how ball fakes and look aways can move defenders to his advantage. Hali could do that, too.

He’s not an elite inside defender, but he works extremely hard, plays physically, and most importantly ends defensive sequences with REBOUNDS. If he can maintain this level of defense while being as incredible on offense as he’s been, we’ve really got something here.

I always think defensive rebounding should be talked about more when discussing a big’s defensive ability. Being able to close out a possession is pretty damn important.

The other aspect of his game that I really appreciate is his screen setting. He plants himself like an oak and can really pop an opposing player.

I love the way Domas sets screens. I still have nightmares about JT’s virtual screening. I’m sure he must have made contact at least once during his Kings tenure but his screening was more conceptual than real.

Not accounting for contract, you’d rather have Bam. Some of the best handles in the league for a big, some of the best screens in the league, solid midrange game thats improved every year and at least a top 25 defender, I’d say top 15 personally. He wouldn’t be a true #1 offensive on a good team but he does so many things at an elite level

I think the best way of putting this is that he himself is not incredibly quick/athletic, but his game allows everyone else on the team to be. Kinda the same way that Kevin Love has been known to start breaks quickly and throw unreal outlet passes.

I get the sense that Fox had become disillusioned with the team since the FO had failed so far to upgrade the talent around him. In that first game with Sabonis et al I saw a rejuvenated Fox with his game face on and an ear to ear smile on his face when the game ended. We’ll see if this keeps up though.

If the Kings salvage this season with an improved record and possible play-in, or even more, the trade will obviously look like an overall win for the Kings. If, however, they continue at the same pre-trade, which is 30ish wins and an 11th spot in the West, does it diminish the trade for Sabonis?

Do you think?

In my eyes this win-now term is getting as overused and meaningless at “fits the time line”.

It could be as simple as McNair placing a heavy value on Sabonis, for all we know he could have been calling Indiana about him from the minute he was hired, and deciding he could pay their asking price of Haliburton since he has Fox and Mitchell on the roster. It certainly seems like an easier roster to build around: A top 15 big in Sabonis, an established PG and superior isolation scorer in Fox, and versatile scoring wing in Barnes.

How many ‘bigs’ would you take ahead of Domas? For me that list is Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis and Giannis Antetokounmpo in no particular order. (I’d probably pick Giannis as the best player in the NBA right now.)

The next tier would be, in no particular order, Karl Anthony-Towns, Rudy Gobert, Domas and Bam Adebayo.

Anyhoo, I don’t think Domas was acquired to get the Kings to the play in. He was acquired to be here at least the next 5 years.

In my eyes, he is a Top Ten big, but I was trying to not be to hyperbolic (no offense BHE).

I am with you on Giannis. I think Jokic is right there with him, and there is a bit of gap before you get to #3.

I definitely think Sabonis was a long term move, which is the gist of my ire with the phrase “win-now”.

According to my completely scientific and completely impeccable opinion, the Kings could possibly go 15-11 to finish the season. In your unscientific and uneducated opinion, is this possible?

You are underselling the new look Kings. They are going to win all 26.

Um, pretty sure Sabonis has time travel powers and we will actually win 28. Don’t sell the man short.

With the recent trades, should the Kings trade their upcoming 1st (plus potentially players) for a current NBA player, rather than drafting a rookie who will likely be a negative on the court for at least a season?

Why have we been slow to embrace Ox for Sabonis? We should be running with that. Ox and Fox. Leads to all sorts of fun sayings like fox fed ox and ox fed fox.

Damn it, I’m engaged with this team again….

Supposed everything goes right and the Kings make the play-in. With this new roster, what do you think would be the result, or how far would they go?

Which young guard is a better match alongside Fox in the future? DiVencenzo or Mitchell?

When does Holmes get traded? Off-season or next season’s trade deadline and what should we expect in return? Do you think we could have received more if he was traded last week?

You have the magical power to slip into Monte McNair’s dreams. Luckily, he’s dreaming about the Kings on opening day, 2025. It’s the last year of Fox’s contract. Assuming Fox is still on the Kings, who else is on the team, and what will their record be?

What do you really…really think of Fox? Bonus question: do you think they kept him because there was no market?

Given that Morey had been insisting on getting Fox in any Simmons deal with the Kings, I’d say that there’s a strong market for him. The assumption that Fox is still here because there are no other teams that want him is just silly.

At this point, we ought to admit that McNair knows what the hell he’s doing. If he was trying to trade Fox, but couldn’t, it only means that the proposed return was inadequate.

Bagley for DiVincenzo. Any questions?

If Holmes struggles in a backup role behind Sabonis the rest of the season, who do you see as a good fit for that position? Would Mason Plumlee work?

1st Question: What was the Richaun Holmes trade that you expected before the trade deadline hit?

2nd Question: The trades have improved the Kings, but more work needs to be done. What is the next move(s) that makes the Kings a playoff team?

Kings committed to the short game.
This is. I long term view.

Sabonis, Fox, Davion, and DD are really the only impactful 25 or younger players on this roster.

A big chunk of this roster will be in the 30s or close to that next season. With the new additions, the Kings pick will not be super valuable. Especially, if they manage .500 the rest of the season.

Barnes, Harkless, Lamb, Holiday, Holmes, and Len.

The goal is too make a major impact quickly.

The Kings are now banking on Sabonis/Fox taking another leap. The team does not have the Asst valuation it once did.

Best case is the aforementioned. What does that look like? Maybe 6-8 in the West next year.
Can 1 of the 2 (Sabonis/Fox) be a Number 1 on a playoff team? We probably won’t have an idea until they start playing healthy playoff teams.

That won’t be for a couple weeks. The Kings can benefit from playing teams all missing their best pieces for weeks. Nets, Bulls, Nuggets, etc.

The real test of this teams ceiling is when they play the Suns(Twice), Dubs, Heat, Celtics, Bucks, Utah, etc.

The next coach is a monumental decision.
I would love Atkinson. But, I think he would have been great for a rebuild.
Kings are a vet team parading as young. They are not anymore.

3 of their current 5 starters are 30 or pushing.

Time will tell. Monte had to take action.
The team is definitely improved and will be moving forward.

The playoff drought could be over soon. Sustained success is another question entirely.

I agree, the “win-now” narrative doesn’t hit the mark for me. If you’d grabbed a 32 year old two-time all-star, then absolutely, that suggests shortsightedness (depending on the specifics).

But if he’s twenty-five, and has two years on his deal after this one? It says that we’ve got two really good players locked in, and the assets to potentially get another. If you’re not going to tank, this is hardly a short-term strategy.

The Revenge of Buddy Chuckets. Let’s not overlook that Tyrese had 22 points, 16 assists and 5 rebounds on 6 for 12 from three with 3 turnovers. The Pacers did lose the game.

I think the challenge for the Pacers is convincing Buddy he’s a 6th man Vinnie Johnson microwave type. And not being so engrossed with his numbers, for that matter.

Pacers are trying to lose, let’s be real. They want the highest pick they can get this season.

Also, Buddy was like 5-6 in non-3 pt shots…typical Buddy. He finds something that is working, and goes completely away from it.

What exactly happened in Indiana? Hearing Sabonis, Holiday and Lamb talking about their stint there I would’ve thought they’re locker room cancer like *cough*cough Buddy *cough and/or players on their last leg

Would you prefer the Kings make the play-in or play better but miss the play-in and get a top-8 pick?

Gentry finally has a roster of real-life NBA players…who do you think gets a legit tryout for next season and who was just trade filler?
