Kings vs 76ers Preview: We now return to our regularly scheduled programming

Back to basketball, I suppose?
By | 83 Comments | Jan 29, 2025

Jan 1, 2025; Sacramento, California, USA; Sacramento Kings guard De'Aaron Fox (5) shoots the ball against Philadelphia 76ers center Andre Drummond (5) during the fourth quarter at Golden 1 Center. Mandatory Credit: Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images

Yesterday was an eventful day for the Sacramento Kings organization. If you’re already tired of De’Aaron Fox discussions, go ahead and skip to the next section. I promise I’ll actually write about today’s game. But first I have some thoughts on this whole debacle, although I will say that I think Tim absolutely nailed it with his article yesterday, check it out if you haven’t.

The biggest thing I saw yesterday, from Bluesky posts, to article comments, to Reddit, to anywhere else on the internet, were people confidently getting details incorrect. It’s so much to keep track of, so I get it, and it’s hard to know which sources to trust and which sources to laugh at (because trust me, there were a couple national reporters yesterday I lump into that “being wrong but with the utmost confidence” category). But to put it in simplest terms, here’s how I see the lay of the land. De’Aaron Fox did not, and has not asked out. The Sacramento Kings started fielding calls on Fox from interested teams, rather than simply saying “no thank you”. The Kings did this because of De’Aaron Fox’s refusal to sign extension offers, despite the reasons (financial and otherwise) being pretty obvious to anyone involved. Fox still stands to secure the most money by staying in Sacramento (whatever you think of his play, All NBA is absolutely still on the table right now due to the 65-game rule eliminating candidates, there are currently probably 20ish candidates, including Fox, for 15 spots). If there’s a trade, De’Aaron Fox’s camp would prefer he go to the Spurs, and has been setting up that possibility for weeks, which should have been obvious to anyone who read the Athletic report from several weeks ago mentioning the Spurs as an interested suitor. There was never a doubt in my mind that Rich Paul provided that little nugget, because that’s an agent’s job. Paul and Fox were pressuring the Kings to improve the roster. That’s Rich Paul’s job, to set his clients up for the best possible situation, and he’s very good at it. You apply pressure by using your leverage (the extension, and a viable alternative suitor). Since then, rather than improving the roster and making an extension an easy decision for Fox, the Kings fired a coach Fox liked and then let Fox take the blame for it. And while the team improved, the front office has still failed to complete any moves to improve the roster’s obvious flaws despite significant smoke and rumors that they are very close on deals (same as it ever was for this front office). But to me, the biggest failure of all was that the Kings allowed this story to go public. They thought they’d re-gain some leverage maybe? “See? If you don’t sign now, we’ll trade you and that supermax goes away even if he makes All NBA this season!” I’m speculating. But it’s a masterclass in mismanaging a team and mismanaging PR. I don’t know what will happen next. No outcome would truly surprise me at this point. But I believe whatever the outcome, the Kings will handle it poorly and then duck the media after,

I would be very sad to see De’Aaron Fox traded. There are ways that a Fox trade could work out for the Kings. But I cannot fathom how anyone would trust this front office to execute that trade.

I’m sure there will be plenty more on this over the next week, but for now there are games to play and awkward postgame media sessions to be held.

Let’s talk Kings basketball!

When: Wednesday, January 29th, 4:30 PM PST
Where: Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, PA
TV:  NBC Sports California
RadioSactown Sports 1140 AM

For Your Consideration

The Kings continue their road trip as they visit the Philadelphia 76ers. Although this is a long road trip that will continue to keep the Kings away from home until next week, it was a decent bit of scheduling to have New York, Brooklyn, and then Philly, all with days off in between. That’s light travel. The 76ers are also on the second night of a back to back, having played the Lakers on Tuesday. The Sixers beat the Lakers handily (Tyrese Maxey had 43 points), winning their third straight game, but Philly had lost 7 straight before that. It’s been a very rough season for the Sixers, but wins over the Cavs, Bulls, and Lakers suggest that if nothing else the Kings cannot afford to overlook their opponent.

The Sixers will be without Joel Embiid and Jared McCain, they were already ruled out. Due to the back-to-back we’ll be waiting for updates on several other Sixers. Caleb Martin, KJ Martin, and Andre Drummond all missed Tuesday’s game and could be in question for tonight’s. Paul George also has a tendon injury, but it’s unclear if it will keep him out of this game. The Kings have nobody on the injury report.

The Kings should win this one if they bring their energy, focus, and effort. Luckily there are no distractions that could disrupt the vibes! Right? Right?

Prediction

De’Aaron Fox plays angry. Domantas Sabonis dominates inside. After the win, Kings PR forces Fox to do media availability and we spend tomorrow discussing his answers.

Kings 125, Sixers 116

76ers had a pretty convincing win over the Lakers yesterday, but I wonder how much being a SEGABABA will affect them tonight. Hope we can take advantage of that and the Fox trade rumors don’t distract the guys too much from playing.

I think I saw Anthony Davis limited to 10 minutes. The game seemed to fall apart for the Lakers after that.

I’d love to see him come out and play angry and keep his name in the hat for All-NBA.

Speaking of which, I think we can agree that is the reason he hasn’t signed an extension yet, so what really are his chances to make it? There are 6 available All-NBA frontcourt slots available. Does Fox get one of those 6?

Here’s a quick buttpulled list of frontcourt players that still qualify the I feel Fox will be competing with, BOLD are players I feel are locks.

Donovan Mitchell, Cade Cunningham, Jalen Brunson, Damian Lillard, Trae Young, Tyler Herro, Zach LaVine, SGA, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Steph Curry.

There may be more, but does Fox beat out 6 of those dudes above?

I don’t think that all-NBA is awarded positionally? 3rd team last year was Domas, LeBron, Booker, Tyrese and Curry.

There are fewer than two dozen guys right now that will merit all-NBA consideration while logging at least 65 games. I think that Fox is well on the outside looking in right now, so I would call it improbable but not impossible.

And all of this kerfuffle has put him more in the national eye. Guess that’s why Rich Paul gets the big bucks.

From what I recall it’s two backcourt players and 3 frontcourt players. They did away with the center designation a few years ago, but I could be wrong.

Sorry, I misrepresented frontcourt and backcourt players in my above comment. Fox is backcourt.

It has to be three backcourt players if Booker, Tyrese and Curry made 3rd team, unless I am transposing the definition of backcourt and frontcourt players. Regardless, based on Curry/Booker/Hali, I would say that there are up to nine slots available for Fox. Again, he’s not among that nine right now, and he’d have to blow the roof of the joint down the stretch to get there. I don’t think it will happen, but the streaky little sucker has gone on runs before.

5/$345m is the supermax price tag.
5/$296m is the standard max price tag.
4/$219m is the most that he can get if he plays out his contract and leaves as a UFA.

And 1 – This is where the hyperbole of the Supermax comes in. The difference between the max and supermax is under $10m a year. So it’s not nothing, but it’s also less annually than an MLE contract. This is why I’m not as concerned as most over the Supermax.

Agree on all your points, Rob. If Fox really wanted to leave, he could force a trade, which maybe we are starting to see from his agent. But financially, going to straight UFA is something no player wants to do when signing a max contract.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. So he simply needs to be a top 15 player in the eyes of those who vote.

If that’s the case, I think he may need to get in line behind Sabonis, because he’s more deserving, IMO. I highly doubt those who vote are going to give two Kings that honor with the way they’ve played this season. Now, should the Kings rally and finish 3rd in the West like they did two years ago, I suppose there is a chance.

Winning this game is pivotal to going .500 on the toughest and (tied for) longest road trip of the year. Would be pretty wild to do so considering everything going on with a new coach and Fox.

I know there was a lost of noise about the Kings not addressing the Brown firing and letting the players, mainly Fox take the brunt of that heat. My question is: If Fox had nothing to do with it and he was hearing that noise, where was his agent to speak out and protect Fox from the blow back? Is that Klutch’s role at all?

(My bias against everything Rich Paul related is strong. I despise what he does as an agent)

I’m not sure what Paul could have said that would have had any traction. Paid agent defends player?

Eye on the ball, it’s fully on the front office for not steadfastly defending Fox. Jeebus, even if Fox did have something to do with Brown’s firing (he did not), you steadfastly defend one of your franchise cornerstones. Asset protection 101. We know this. How do they not know this?

The Kings should have known this, and should have done something. It showed me that there is a disconnect with team and player/agent. I just ask because I have heard other agents come out on their client’s behalf at times.

I’m guessing Fox’s agent knows the latest KANGZ episode doesn’t change the way front offices around the league view Fox.

Kings FO: “Screw it, don’t say anything about firing Brown.”

Rest of the league FOs: “Vivek gonna Vivek.”

He kind of did, but in a quieter way. Once it was clear the Kings weren’t going to say anything, a bunch of news stories came out about the same time, saying that Fox didn’t force Brown out, was having lunch with him, etc. Those clearly came from Fox’s PR team, because Sac wouldn’t have leaked it.

How come Fox/Paul is the only voice that we hear when it comes to team building and improving the roster?

Domas hasn’t said anything publicly. Monk, DDR, Keegan, etc. haven’t said anything publicly.

It sounds very much like the Lebron script (“I need help”)…and the common denominator is Klutch Sports.

I get that, makes sense. Except Fox is not remotely on Giannis’ level.

If it works and they get good pieces as a result great but it’s weird to pull a power move when you aren’t even the best player on your team.

On Ham’s podcast yesterday he said Domas told him he was told the Kings had a couple of moves to bring in players in free agency last summer, but when they failed on those they shifted to DeRozan. It makes a hell of a lot of sense because DeMar wasn’t signed until a full week into free agency.

I think that would require more trades to consolidate guards into wings and bigs. Also not sure why Miami would do that when Herro has been keeping them afloat this year.

A team contacted the Kings with an offer/idea for a Fox trade. That got conveyed to Fox’s agent (per Ham and Carmichael Dave), and then it became “Kings entertaining Fox trades”.

That is the reporting that I have heard.

Wow, just saw this one on the interwebs, and I have to say, it ain’t the worst idea.

Bulls get: Harrison Barnes, Kevin Huerter, Trae Jones, ATL 2025 first rounder, ATL 2027 first rounder
Spurs get: De’Aaron Fox
Kings get: Zach LaVine, Jeremy Sochan, Julian Champagine, 2031 pick swap returned, 2026 second round pick from via Utah.

The Bulls get out of LaVine’s deal for eating Barnes and Huerter for one more season, but get two good 1sts and an expiring Jones.

Spurs get Fox and don’t have to give up Castle or Vassell.

Kings remain competitive with LaVine, get two solid wings in Sochan and Champagine, plus the pick swap back and likely a good 2nd round pick.

We know Monte has tried from LaVine in the past, but I’m not sure about LaVine and DDR back together. The Kings don’t get any first rounders/magic beans, but do get 3 solid win now players with length.

Why do the Kings gets the worst pick back for Fox, while taking on Lavine’s contract?

LaVine’s contract is not desirable, for sure, but I could be talked into it as opposed to giving Fox a 5 year, more expensive, extension. From an offensive standpoint, the Kings really don’t miss a beat and LaVine is very good from 3. It feels like a win now kind of trade as opposed to going for picks.

Spurs get better and our defense gets worse?

If Fox isn’t a 1A/1B guy, LaVine definitely isn’t. The Double Stuf Oreo of NBA offense; big, empty calories.

How does the Kings defense get worse? Yes, LaVine is worse than Fox but not crippling worse. Sochan and Champagine are pretty solid, especially Sochan. I’ve said before LaVine and Fox are on the same talent tier for me. Zach may even edge out Fox a bit offensively.

One good thing about Fox News is that nobody’s talking about Kyle Kuzma anymore
