Hold fast, brave Kings fans. We’re in turbulent but familiar waters once again. The Sacramento Kings have missed the playoffs after losing in the Play-In for the second straight year. That’s right friends, we have a new streak for missing the playoffs. With this second disappointing season, the Kings will also be searching again for a General Manager, as the Kings and Monte McNair have parted ways.
Two years ago we dealt with a much better disappointment, as the Kings lost a thrilling seven-game playoffs series to the Golden State Warriors. It sucked to lose that series, but the future still seemed as bright as the Beam, with a young core and opportunities to continue growing. Instead, the organization made multiple missteps, resulting in fewer wins in each of the following two seasons, and now a team that is older, more expensive, and without a clear direction or reason for optimism.
In the wake of McNair’s departure, we’re already seeing familiar reports. Sam Amick of the The Athletic reports that McNair’s exit was written on the walls as he no longer had ultimate decision making influence over franchise-altering choices. From Amick:
McNair didn’t want to fire Brown, league sources said, and there are internal questions about whether he really wanted to sign DeRozan or trade for LaVine. Tension also existed in recent days between McNair and the ownership group about Christie’s future with Ranadive viewed as the Christie backer.
It’s always a challenge to evaluate a Kings GM. It’s hard to know which of the decisions made on their watch, even the ones they publicly take the blame for (as McNair eventually did when speaking to the press a month after the Mike Brown firing), are actually their choices and which are influenced by Vivek Ranadive, Matina Kolokotronis, and whoever else has captured Vivek’s attention that week. It’s a perpetual narrative of this organization, that there are multiple voices whispering in Vivek’s ear, and the franchise gets upended by whatever shiny idea Vivek gets convinced is good. We are franchise run by the most gullible guy in your fantasy sports league. The job of a Kings GM is as much about managing Vivek as it is about drafting, free agency, and trades. And ultimately, it’s a result-based business and the results have been getting worse. In that sense, it’s understandable that Monte McNair is set to be replaced. But I worry about the future, because we know the results have been consistently underwhelming since Vivek took over as managing owner of this team, and that isn’t going to change no matter who the GM is.
As for the next GM, Amick reported several possibilities, including some familiar names.
League sources say Scott Perry, who was the Kings’ vice president of basketball operations for three months in 2017 before being hired away as the New York Knicks’ general manager, is expected to receive strong consideration for the job and is considered a frontrunner.
Perry, whose 25-year front office career has also included time with the Detroit Pistons, Seattle SuperSonics and Orlando Magic, had a strong working relationship with Ranadive during his Sacramento stint and worked closely with then-general manager Vlade Divac.
Former Denver Nuggets general manager Calvin Booth is also expected to be given consideration, league sources said. Booth, who was fired by the Nuggets recently along with coach Michael Malone, previously interviewed with the Kings before they hired McNair in the summer of 2020. While Divac continues to have a presence and voice around the team, including with Ranadive, team sources say he will not be returning in any formal capacity to the team’s front office.
While it’s a small relief to hear that Vlade will not be returning to the front office in a formal capacity, we know that a formal capacity is not a requirement to have influence on this organization. Vlade sits courtside with Vivek regularly, and Vlade does have an official title with the Kings already. Peja Stojakovic, Vlade’s former Assistant GM, is often there as well. Vlade Divac signed Zach LaVine to a restricted free agent offer sheet in 2018, but the Bulls quickly matched. Do we think it’s a coincidence that the Kings finally landed LaVine this season?
More than anything, these rumored names suggest that nothing has changed. Vivek is looking at Scott Perry, a name from the Divac tenure. Vivek is looking at Calvin Booth, who he wanted 5 years again before Booth withdrew from the Kings GM search. And let’s not forget the cherry on top, again from Amick:
The next general manager is expected to have influence on the Kings’ ultimate choice for head coach, but interim coach Doug Christie is well-positioned to keep the job, team sources said, though Christie said he has yet to be given any firm assurances.
The next general manager should not “have influence” in the next coach. The next general manager should be able to pick a head coach with no restraints. But that’s not how Vivek operates. He’s going to secure his chosen coach and then hire a GM, just as he’s done multiple times before. Sadly, everyone but Vivek seems to understand how that inevitably ends.
I hope my pessimism is wrong. I hope Vivek is visited by three ghosts in the night and sees the error of his meddling ways. I hope this team can be truly great for an extended period of time. But this all feels too familiar right now. We’ve seen this one before, we know how it plays out. And it’s depressing that we are enduring this cycle once again.
Sell the Team!
Start a campaign. What do we have to lose?
Maybe this time Carmichael Dave will put his weight behind it.
The team, mainly.
shrugs
Do you think the team would move if it was sold? Also I might be wrong but I didnt think Vivek had a majority of team shares/percentage he was just named governing partner.
There is a lease. I don’t see the NBA letting the team leave one of the top 10 or so, at least, arenas in the league.
Do we know how long the lease is for? I thought there was some restriction on how long the Kings had to play at the new arena before they could, in theory, relocate. I am pretty sure if the team is sold, as soon as legally permissible, they will be moved.

Basing your (lack of) action on fear is sometimes a good choice. Often, it isn’t.
What action do you feel that I should undertake, Rik? And what has fear got to do with anything?
I think you should start an aggressive Sell the Team campaign, and not refrain from doing so because you fear the franchise might relocate, Andy.
Yes. Not sure why anyone would be against a sell the team campaign.
They wouldn’t lose the team. That makes little sense.
Yes. Start a campaign. Billboard. T shirts. Chants at game. Gotta make shot uncomfortable for Vivek
I give up. Vivek wins.
He can hire his avatar of choice as GM, or Re-hire Vlade, or name his kids co-GMs. Whatever sounds good that day.
Don’t give up. You’re not a quitter.
I’m not a quitter either. I always tell people that when they ask why I still support the Kings (and why I still smoke).
shrugs
This team is going to drive me back to smoking. Maybe we’ll get noticed by Vivek and given jobs though?
Looks like you picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
As I recall, Vivek wanted himself to be surrounded by people smarter than him, if so, why Vivek is still making his own decision, instead of just letting those guys cook….
Full power should be rewarded to the NEW GM….and hopefully he can clear the whole roster and start all over agan.
Having been there, it’s kind of fun to be surrounded by people smarter than me, and telling them to take their good ideas and cram them up their asses. Very satisfying, and amazing leadership.
When boarding commercial flights I often stop and inform the pilot how I want to him to fly the plane.
Charlie Kirk, ladies and gentlemen!
I’m just so tired.
And looks like we are hiring Scott Perry, that was fast. Almost too fast, like when your friend’s Ex starts dating someone new the day after they break up.

The Sacramento Kings are finalizing a deal to hire longtime NBA executive Scott Perry as their new general manager, sources tell ESPN. Perry spent three months with the Kings in 2017 before leaving for the Knicks. Perry started his exec career in 2000 with Detroit.
WTF? Holy hell that was fast.
So, are we going to get the new coach within the next few hours ?
I mean, almost had to be in motion before last night’s game. Wonder if Monte knew and this was part of why they finalized things so quickly and he was ready to be out the door.
not a bad strategy, getting well prepared for next step….
I think Vivek and Perry had a deep talk in advance
I wouldn’t surprise me at all if Vivek was bringing in Perry as a President of Basketball Operations or some fabricated title to “help” Monte. Monte caught wind and said, “fuck this, I’m out,”
Vivek has proven multiple times he wants competing people overseeing the same job. It must be some kind of Silicon Valley cut throat shit.
This
Yeah that makes a lot of sense.
Exactly. If you’ve read Team of Rivals and you’re a dummy, you would do exactly what Vivek does with the Kings.
Competing teams don’t generate better ideas. They create a culture of sabotage and backstabbing.
The people with the most influence over basketball decisions, Ranadive and Marina Kolokotronis, have no actual experience with the game, and have proven again and again that when the proverbial stopped clock is on the desk of a C-suite executive, it still can’t manage to be right once a day, let alone twice.
The only good decision Ranadive has made since taking ownership was the hiring of Monte McNair, and he still had to undermine it by forcing his new GM to carry Luke Walton beyond his use-by date, which as we know, was some time in the late 1980s.
If Christie is kept as head coach, regardless of whether that decision is made before or after a GM is hired, it would be a terrible portent. Keep DC around, but not as the top man.
I wouldn’t say that the new GM will be in a worse place than McNair was when he was hired, but they won’t be staring on fertile ground given that a teardown of the roster won’t be permitted.
It is very difficult right now to have a sense of optimism about the near or long-term success of the Sacramento Kings.
Fuck off Vivek
I just don’t know what to say….
I mean, we fans were supposed to talk about the post game, and the poor performance…
(which lots can be discussed)
But all in a sudden, the focus goes to the hire and the welcome of new GM….
Honestly, how much did you actually want to talk about that game? Miserable stuff.
Yeah, pretty sad to turn off the last game of the season at halftime.
The outcome was a symptom of weak and pathetic ownership.
This franchise is destined to lose indefinitely…the owner is simply an arrogant, inflexible, self-righteous, egomaniacal idiot.
I’ll continue to wait for a team that this city deserves but I stopped giving Vivec any of my money years ago.
In the meantime: Fuck Vivek, Fuck Kolokotronis, Fuck all the enablers they surround themselves with. Absolute pathetic ownership and management.
Say what you want about Ranadive, you gotta love his new clothes.
I’ve purposely been buying knock off jerseys for a couple years now and have no regerts
That is nice “CHEFS” jersey you got!
No regerts, NarCol!
In all sincerity, best of luck to Monte McNair. I’m certain that you’re going to do great things in your new position, wherever it is. You were not remotely the problem in Sacramento.
I move for the foreseeable future that all Red banners be “Broken:…” instead of the current “Breaking:…”
If Amick’s reporting is true, that MM was merely executing Vivek’s orders in the firing of Mike Brown and the pursuit of LaVine and/or DeMar, then I think his departure has been planned.
I would think the really odd circumstance of McNair not doing any press after the Mike Brown firing makes more sense now if he was not for it, and the result of that being Fox taking unnecessary heat, was an act of someone who had decided he was done.
With McNair out one hour after the game, Scott Perry locked and loaded twelve hours later, I imagine this plan likely started sometime between the firing of Brown and the trade deadline. It would explain the malaise hovering over the team and the uninspired play.
Sam Amick this morning on 1140AM:
Yeah, Monte 100% quit.
Kangz in full. Scott Perry new GM. Maybe, maybe not.
Perry’s track record not amazing. But not awful.
During Perry’s 8 yrs. 4 playoff appearances. For some Kings fans this will be like winning the lottery.
Best Draft picks: Quickly, Barrett,
Grimes, Toppin, Robinson.
No stars there. But solid players.
Perry’s biggest coup: Signing Brunson. This trade transformed the Knicks into a perennial playoff contender. Also helps that Thibs is the coach there as well
Perry wil be stuck with Lavine. So the team really still needs a 1A.
Lavine’s desire to win going into his 12th season, poor defense, and just not a winning player.’
I still have no idea how Vivek ‘Rama-swamy-dive’ made his Billion$. He sure doesn’t know how to run an organization. How do you become a millionaire? Start out as a billionaire, then buy an NBA franchise and run it into the ground.
