Sacramento Kings trade Nemanja Bjelica to the Miami Heat

F*ck it, he deserves this trade.
By | 274 Comments | Mar 25, 2021

Courtesy of Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings are trading Nemanja Bjelica to the Miami Heat, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Kings will receive Moe Harkless and Chris Silva, according to Woj.

It’s no surprise that the Kings are trading Bjelica. Bjelly is on an expiring contract and has been unhappy with his role on the Kings this season. It’s interesting that the Kings got actual player in return, as it was expected that Bjelica might only fetch a second round pick.

Neither Harkless nor Silva have played much for Miami this year. We’ll have to see if they are part of a larger Kings move, if they’ll be waived, or if the Kings plan to keep either around for the rest of the year. Harkless is an expiring contract and Silva has a team option for next year.

As ESPN’s Bobby Marks notes, the Kings will need to open a roster spot to complete this trade.

Durant has missed most of the year. Their combination of depth and Star power. It’s sick. Personally, I don’t think Philly has a chance against a healthy Nets team.

So you love matador defenders and slow footed shot jackers who pretend like they’d be anywhere but on the court playing hoops.

Bjelica was decent to good two years ago, and the reason his production and quality of play fell off the cliff is because he has NOT worked hard enough on his body or craft.

And this is a player to love? Sorry, no. He is not serious enough about his career for my taste.

And this is a guy who also allegedly REFUSED to play when Bagley was put ahead of him in the rotation.

How is that commendable?! With both Bjelica and Joseph, fans are exceedingly cordial when it is unearned. In fact, when you thank them for their “professionalism” it usually means they have NO game.

Fantastic subheader, G.

I’ve like Harkless since he came out of school, although I don’t really know how he’s been more recently. He’s expiring, which is probably the point. Silva’s deal has less than $2 mil left on it after this season which is a team option, and he seems to have pretty good rebounding chops. Hopefull they’ll get some court time to be evaluated, but I’d guess they’re gone after the season.

I have always liked harkless too.. I think he will be the stopgap for when we trade Barnes. I can see monte going after smaller players that are more versatile. Hali, Harkless, Wright, maybe get Nesmith and a first rounder for Barnes, be able to resign Holmes. Maybe get a low first rounder for Bagley… draft a stretch 4

have a bunch of 6-3 to 6-7 guys with a small ball center..

Lets hope!! Its looking like dallas is the only one left as a suiter for Barnes since Boston and Denver are out I’ll be extremely disappointed if this is an owner meddling situation there’s no way we should push for a 10th seed not considering how top heavy with stars this year’s draft is.

You don’t think Boston might still want to flip Fournier and trade exception for Barnes? If we can get a pick out of it, that’s a good deal for both sides.

No picks. We are truly going for it.

We have now acquired Wright and Harkless (if he stays) to fortify our bench for the run.

Gonna miss ya Nemanja, I still have the Houston Game Winner DVR’d. Never deleting it.

If they wanted the flexibility to do that they wouldn’t have added salary with Delon Wright.

Unless they make a move to shed him or Bagley or Barnes or Buddy here in a few hours or in the offseason.

Which begs the question, might as well trade Holmes right?

This one makes no sense if you aren’t planning on keeping them. I mean, it is all on the periphery, but maybe they are just doing NB a solid by moving him to Miami.

Well, Silva has a team option for next year on his contact, Harkless is expiring…so at worst we keep Silva around. Very interested to see what happens in the next few hours because so far this could just be to remain competitive for the play-in, or make a bigger splash

it gives McNair some extra cash to spend next season though. That could matter if there is any concern about their willingness to go over the cap to sign Holmes or use the full MLE.

Stuff is happening:
Philadelphia is acquiring OKC’s George Hill for Tony Bradley, Terrance Fergusson and two future second-round picks, sources tell ESPN. Austin Rivers goes to OKC as part of a three-way deal.

Toronto has traded Norm Powell to Portland for Gary Trent and Rodney Hood, sources tell ESPN.

Man, adding the third-best distance shooter in the league to Portland’s back court is just nuts. They may win games with zero points in the paint.

I went over to BlazersEdge on SB Nation, and they seem to be unimpressed this deal, thinking Gary Trent and Powell were equals. They have not watched enough Raptor basketball. Powell is what Trent hopes to be, from my perspective.

But he’s expiring. I think with that same logic its a great get for the Raptors as they are analogous. He is a lottery grade prospect IMO. For an expiring is good business. Powell’s impressed no doubt but I don’t think he moves their fortunes all that dramatically, and he has a payday waiting.

I think you could argue wanting a 2nd over Silva (I would), but we have an option, and he is worthy of intrigue. Fine with it. Worst case we clear the deck the same way we would have with Bjelica with the both oof them while doing Bjelly a solid.

Still the directions or purpose of these trades in totality is not yet clear personally. Hope they go tank oppose to play in. It would be foolish in my view not to.

Whiteside is def gone, so that solves the issue temporarily. But, the roster situation will get interesting if they do a Barnes trade. Most people believe that type of trade would require the Kings taking multiple players back.

It all depends on who is doing the talent evaluation and acquistion.

I am optimistic and encouraged by McNair so far, I concur with everything he has done, or tried to do (trade for DeVincenzo, for example).

This new guy is not Vlade, drafting bean pole cutiepie Justin Jackson and Harry Giles, the man with two wrecked knees with a mid first rounder when he could have been had more rightfully from risk/reward standpoint as a free agent or second rounder.

Our team was being run by an amateur. Now we are only being coached by one. The new GM is impressive so far. It is only the pessimistic and sentimental handing out false praise to checked out slackers like Bjelica who fail to recongnize this.

Now trade Bagley…..let’s go!!!

That’s insane. Presti is going with a small market model to either hitting in the draft or trade picks for a star because he knows no star player is going to come to OKC via free agency.

Oh I’m sure they’ll surpass the Kings at some point soon. The thing I think is funny is that even though they have shipped off everybody, they are still just as competitive as the Kings. One team is actively trying to be terrible and one is (sort of) trying to compete.

They’re gonna make the biggest trade in NBA history watch.

6 1st rounders for KAT in 2023 when KAT finally wants out. Or do they wait for Giannis to force out?

Either way, they are in AMAZING shape.

They could theoretically add two first rounders, trade for a star or two, and use those stars as a draw for a big signing. They have all the assets they need to make BIG moves whenever they want.

Will be interesting to see what happens, but the trend now is for players to make the jump to the nba too early. OKC might be fielding a high school team that needs baby sitters. 2021 might be the most overrated and over hyped draft ever.

At some point it is overkill when you only need 8-9 high quality players to advance deep into the playoffs and won the “chip”. Danny Ainge did the same thing to lesser degree 8-10 years ago starting with the Nets trade of Pierce and KG, IIRC, and that kind of worked out, but he’s still searching for a core group.

Look what the Jazz did by comparison. They are friggen 32-11 this year because they found 7-8 core players they can count on. They did not “tear it down” they just tinkered around Donovan and Gobert until they found the right mix.

The Jazz blueprint is OUR strategy to team building, so it would seem. Fox is our Mitchell, becoming his equal and may surpass him.

Liked Bjelica, his strengths were good but his weaknesses were really bad. For 3 month rentals, the Kings hopefully improved their defense and rebounding, while losing a little shooting and playmaking from the stretch four. All just 3 month rentals, and doing Bjelica a solid.

To me, all of these trades signal that the Kings are hoping/planning to move Buddy (keep Barnes) at the deadline. Move Haliburton into the starting lineup and Delon Wright as your 6th man playmaker point guard off the bench.

Harkless seems to be the long lost bench SF/PF that the Kings have been trying to find for awhile – similar to the hopes of Shumpert, Brewer, or even Bazemore.

What is going on with Jabari Parker though?

Not sure if it’s sad, funny, or both, but for the last couple decades the most exciting days of Kings’ seasons for the fans are the trade deadline and draft day, as for a brief moment we actually think “Maybe we’re about to see something that will make us not suck anymore!”. Like that first week after New Years when I actually think I’ll shed that weight before I recommence my sloth and continue to be a fat sack of sh!t.

Kings basketball is and has been unwatchable for nearly 20 years. They may be able to make themselves even moreso, but it’ll be indistinguishable to our fanbase at this point. Like a prisoner being moved from the cell that smells mostly like urine, to the one that smells completely like urine, you eventually become nose-blind to the nuance between the two.

Ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline, the Lakers are faced with an extended period of time without James and Anthony Davis.

Whiteside would be a decent stopgap in the short-term. Getting anything of use back would be a win. The Lakers are hot garbage right now and need to do something.

Deal opens a roster spot to take on an additional player in a Lowry trade. Raptors continue talking to teams on deals within 45 minutes of deadline. Thomas gives the Jazz another in an endless line of three-point shooters on the team.

No likely impact here, but the Clips seem to know that playoff Rondo is the best Rondo.

Why does Bjelica “deserve” anything ? The guy doesn’t play hard (did you happen to notice him getting yanked recently for not even attempting to box out and get a defensive board?) , has an apathetic & aloof demeanor, and has no muscle tone which reflects his work ethic in the weight room.

Good-bye and good riddens to the Two Bums in CoJoSlo and Bjelica who I said were NON-rotational players before the season began. Our GM is a genius!

I am not saying he reads my commentary on this site and acts accordingly, but I am not saying he doesn’t either. 🙂

Two down, one to go. Please send Bagley packing next, Mr. McNair, the anti-Vlade of GMs!

Only 3 notable deals around the league (Dipo, Vuc, Gordon). Seems a lot of the rumors were just sort of pulled out thin air.

Maybe Pop is the guy to get him on track.

I’m disgusted as a fan of this team. This bad team did absolutely nothing to meaningfully improve its long-term prospects.

I mean that’s pretty easy. He’s younger and was developed by the Raptors who have a history of developing young guys like him. I don’t hate Davis. What I don’t like is that all this seems like is trying to build a bench in order to fail at making the play-in game. I don’t really understand what the point of that is.

The 2021 draft is grossly overrated, unless you get lucky with the ping pong balls and land in the top 3. I’d rather build a winning culture.

I don’t know what the rotation will look like, but I think it gets more competitive to get playing time, which can force guys to develop and play hard. I think Silva will jump over Metu in the rotation. I think there is the possibility of moving Buddy to the bench unit and trying out a handful of players in the starting 5.

This current starting lineup has actually been pretty good this year. The issue has been this team has no depth and they did without question get deeper. To what end? My guess is, Vivek told Monte the goal is to make the play-in game, which is an objectively stupid goal but I that’s what this looks like to me. It’s an attempt at needle threading which I am pretty sure will fail but I think that’s what’s going on.

This theory might make sense if Vivek had not replaced Vlade. Vlade proved himself incompetent, so if Vivek wanted to call the shots, he would have left Vlade in place as a pseudo authority, then superceded his decision-making when he saw fit.

You don’t hire a new GM if you ultimately want to be the one making the personnel decisions.

they’d need to use a separate exception (or a S&T) to do that though since they’ll be over the cap. If Davis is worth keeping, then they can go over the cap to sign him since he’s an RFA, while preserving their ability to use the biannual and MLE on two additional players. Then they just have to hope that they can keep Holmes with the early bird.

Yeah what did the Celtics actually do? They swapped Theis for Fournier who will be an UFA at the end of the year. Honestly, that’s pretty damn underwhelming given all the hype around them heading into the deadline. Fournier is fine but I will be interested to see how he looks when he doesn’t have the ball all the time like he did in Orlando.

Seriously, how long has everyone on here been complaining about how awful the bench is? Monte builds an immediately better bench by taking advantage of GMs desperate to open roster spots, and gives up literally nothing for it. If our new starting five is as good as the numbers say, then here’s a bench that might actually support them. Might be a little wishy washy in my part, but it’s not nothing. And there’s still plenty of time and options for the Holmes situation.

Also, did anyone on here really want Nesmith and the 27th pick, or Harris and the 30th pick, for Barnes? Come on, that’s not value. Live to fight another day.

There’s a healthy contingent here that really doesn’t care about this year’s bench. There’s a smaller contingent that actually believes making the play-in game is important. You should direct this at that contingent.

I’m of the same opinion. The organization didn’t get fleeced. The team is better today than it was yesterday. I’m a bit concerned about the reduction in flexibility with the addition of Delon, but that can be rectified in the off season.

They took advantage of what they could and didn’t make a desperate move. Would it have been exciting to have unloaded some bad contracts, sure, but it’s not the end of the world.

Theoretically, these assets can be moved in the offseason or dumped. Hard to know what to think right now – if they were offered some crap deals, that’s fine. If they passed up the acquisition of draft assets/young players to chase the play-in game, that’s dumb as shit.

And FWIW the same guy “who is taking my advice” picked Haliburton, a guy having a better rookie year than Fox. Have fun trying to reconcile why the GM taking my advice, hypothetically, is a “problem”.

McNair just traded the worst rotational player in the NBA for a guy with a nearly 5:1 assist ratio. Thats awesome!!!

Not everything is peaches and cream, though, we need to find a way to retain Holmes and that might have gotten tougher today.

We need to keep Holmes and pay him upwards of 12-15M for 4 years. That is going to be a challenge when the league is rejecting Bagley as a trade asset to free our cap money.

But I strongly contend that those hoping today was the day to “blow it up” by moving HB and Buddy were operating from a false narrative.

There’s just friggen wrong whether they want to admit it or not. With the exception of the blowout in PHI when we were tired on a back to baken has taken off w/o Marvin, he was the deadweight, the awkward fit, the rapper feigning ability as a basketball player.

We are kicking ass. We destroyed the Cavs at the end of our road trip, then dismantled the Hawks playing like a 4th or 5th seed.

So we are looking like a pretty good with NO bench, what happens if we get a good bench?!?

It is time for Kings fans to adjust their perspective, recognize we are not far off from being good, even very good.

Our template to become legitimate contenders is the Jazz NOT the Thunder.

Come on guys, open your mind and see the possibilities!

Buddy and HB remain Kings. Woo-hoo! Yes it is sad we could not find a taken for Marvin, but I am sure it was not for a lack of trying.

But the silver lining is this: Bagley can be part of a second unit with Delon Wright and Metu that maybe can have some success?

Metu was impressive last night! I am higher on Metu than Bagley, he’s more comfortable in more situations. Metu needs to dramatically improve his defense, but he has the skills.

I think the injury can be productive for Marvin if he does a lot of heavy squats and sprints and works on his handles and touch with his right hand. He’s weak and uncoordinated and that has nothing to do with needing a “fresh start” with a new team. Marvin is a joke who needs to give up his useless hobby (rap music) and focus on his flailing career. I think the way the team is playing without him should be a heaping serving of humble pie if he is receptive to the signs.

Thats the most positive spin I can put on a bad situation when it is obvious we are good team without him and those who wanted us to blow it up today or the Cory Joseph of analysts in my opinion.

Lost in the excitement of the trade deadline is that we played a great game last night.

News flash, Kings fans, we are good. And last night and today, we got better!

Really?

Fox is an emerging superstar, a thrilling player, who is absolutely obliterating defenses (despite the contentions of my man Otis) and last night we slaughtered the Hawks, who have been on a tear since their coaching change.

The Hawks played a very good game led by Bogi and Trae and Capella and still we emerged with the WIN.

That was a helluva impressive win last night. Did you miss the game?

So it is an objectively FALSE statement that ALL signs point to the fact “we’re not, in fact, good.”.

Try again. I will look forward to correcting you again, if necessary.

It is a figure of speech. A squeeker or a slaughter counts the same in the standings.

Fox is an awesome, awesome player. I love the guy. It is sad you dont see that, which I saw from Day One, the day he was drafted, and before, when he was massacring Lonzo Bust.

But lets talk stats.

When Fox was struggling at 20 PPG, I said dont worry he will average 22-24 PPG. What happened? As of last night he is averaging 24.1 PPG. He’s incredible.

Teams have NO answer for him. NO answer. You think hes the same guy as last year? What are you watching?

And you want to cite his 3 point shooting? You are being disenguous when it is obvious he is obliterating the opponent.

His three ball is MONEY too. It just comes and goes, because it is his speed and juke moves that KILL. His deep ball is the bonus.

Why don’t you enjoy the awesomeness instead of resist?!?!

Fox basically does what he wants. He takes over when he wants. But that is not enough for you? You are being disenguous when it is clear as day Fox is a marvelous player.

Fox is easily the most talented player in Sacramento Kings history. The day he was drafted I said he will easily surpass any accomplishment by DeMarcus Boogie Cousins and that has happened.

There is NO shame in being wrong in your assessment. I am wrong. In fact the reason I am right a lot is because I am not afraid to be wrong. I admit when I am wrong.

But you can do better than be wrong and fail to admit as much. Fox is so fun. He’s the best thing that happened to this franchise since Webber and Bibby and J-Will. Stop pretending otherwise.

And you want to cite his 3 point shooting? You are being disenguous when it is obvious he is obliterating the opponent.

It’s amazing we lost a game this season, considering these “obliterations”.

You’re not a serious person.

is your thing with Fox that you just want to make sure we accurately evaluate him as a very good, but not great player? I have a hard time figuring out what your actually beliefs are on him.

My “thing” with Fox is not complicated – this team needs a superstar (or two) to talk about anything more than being a lower tier playoff team. Yet, this is the franchise player the Kings are building around.

He’s a fine player. He’s not a superstar. When he makes an All-Star team, then I think we can potentially talk about that – until then, I suppose we will keep parsing the more obscure data (for him personally and the team) and ignoring the fact that the bulk of the data doesn’t show exponential growth for him or his team (I mean, the record is the record).

And shit, we haven’t even talked about defense yet.

did you really need to put the quotes around thing? My point was I can’t really tell what you believe about Fox. Thank you for elaborating.

Looking back at it, I should have put quotes around “thing with Fox”. Sorry, just thought it implied I have an irrational dislike of the guy. Certainly not the case.

6 games under .500 is good? Spurs, Den, Clips, Dallas, Port,
Dubs and even Grizz are good.

Suns, Lakers and Utah are next level.

Where are the Kings good? You lost me.

If we are comparing the Kings to Houston or Minny, maybe Pels. In that case we’re good.

Reality: all those teams aforementioned will still be better than the Kings next year.

That’s the sad part. Barnes value won’t be any higher than it is now.
Hield will not flip a switch be any different than what he is.

I have no issues with Holmes. He’s a Top 20 Center. Undersized. But, valuable to this team.

Bagley: Kings are stuck with him for at least another year.

Do you have an issue with comprehension? 6 games under .500 is NOT relevant to my asssertion when I clearly stated what changed for our team was swapping out Bust Bagley for ROY Ty, moving Buddy and HB down a position that is likely more conducive to their respective skillsets.

That was the defining moment forced upon a braindead coach, a starting lineup that I advocated for before the season began (look it up!), that has obviously born fruit excluding the 76er game when we were on the second of a back-to-back after our BIG win in BOS.

Do fans realize how tenuous and fragile a lineup and rotation can be? One player in or out can make monumental difference? That is what has happened with Bagley sidelined, Ty inserted.

Even with our pathetic bench, we beat a very good team last night in the Hawks who played a very good game. So fans either need to adjust their perspective or ignore the objective reality.

Thankfully , our GM sees the reality and seeks to make it more promising!
