Colby Jones could be a two-way connector for Sacramento

Sacramento managed to draft a versatile, high-IQ player at pick 34.

Following the conclusion of the 2023 NBA Draft, Sacramento Kings’ general manager Monte McNair outlined the importance of adding two-way versatility this offseason. “We’ve got two All-NBA guys that we’re building around, so guys that can help them on both ends of the floor,” McNair said. “We want high-IQ guys that can come in here and just figure out a way to contribute no matter who they are on the floor with.”

Colby Jones, who the Kings selected with pick 34 on Thursday night, fits that description nearly perfectly. The front office’s willingness to expend a future second-rounder to move up from 38 to 34 to select Jones shows how they feel about his potential fit.

At the combine, he measured 6’4.5” without shoes and weighed 199 pounds with a 6’8” wingspan. He should have the size to deal with a majority of twos and threes at the NBA level standing around 6’6” with shoes while also having the lateral quickness to potentially contain most point guards. Considering Sacramento finished 24th in defensive rating in the previous regular season, let’s start with how Jones could help improve on that end.

The Xavier product spent a good amount of time guarding initiators during his junior season and performed well in those scenarios. According to Synergy Basketball, Jones held opponents to 0.702 points-per-possession when defending pick-and-roll ball handlers. When you watch the tape, it’s easy to see why.

His combination of length, ball pressure, awareness, and screen navigation is promising. Notice the way he quickly gets his shoulders past screens and how, when he does get hit, he never gives up on the play. When appropriate, you can see him veer off to help defend the rolling big man and attempt with no hesitation.

McNair was complimentary of his on-ball defensive versatility on Thursday night. “Defensively, he can guard up and down. Probably not a lot of centers, but he’s strong. He’s big and he’s going to be very versatile on that end.”

McNair alluding to Jones guarding fours may be a bit kind, but Jones won’t ever go down without trying his best to make it work.

Jones’s impressive understanding of the game is apparent in most things he does, but it’s crystal clear in his off-ball rotations. The Kings could undeniably use more players who muck things up for opposing offenses.

When he finds himself responsible for protecting the rim as the low man, Jones is up for the task with verticality and discipline. If he needs to dig or stunt he does so with active hands but remains aware of his own assignment.

Having averaged 1.3 steals and 0.6 blocks per game helps reinforce the defensive impact seen on film. McNair said Jones was highly regarded by their scouts and analytics staff and “when those two things overlap, as we’ve talked about, it makes my job easy.”

Crashing the glass is another area where Jones makes an impact with his attention to detail and relentless engagement. Averaging 5.7 rebounds (1.3 offensive) at his size when often assigned to perimeter players is no easy feat. Jones pulled down 14 rebounds in their second-round NCAA Tournament victory over Pitt.

Revisiting Sacramento’s postseason series against the Golden State Warriors, it’s easy to understand the importance of finding more plus rebounders outside of Domantas Sabonis.

When it comes to the offensive end, Jones is someone who has the potential to finish plays at all three levels and maintain advantages with passes that are on time and on target. According to Synergy, Jones converted 62.2 percent of his 156 attempts at the rim.

He’s not an underwhelming athlete, but he’s also probably below average relative to the NBA’s high standards yet he manages to find success finishing with imaginative angles and releases.

Whether that’s releasing quickly with the same-sided hand and foot, initiating contact to create space and finish on the way down, or slithering past a big to sneak one past him, Jones finds creative ways to release the ball and utilize his extremely impressive touch at the basket.

That touch also translates to his floater game, which is where he managed to be a constant threat in the mid-range off of one or two feet. Jones made 54.5 percent of his 77 attempted “runners” in 2022-23. If teams scheme to limit his finishing at the rim, Jones can extend his range with that floater to finish over rotating defenders.

While his two-percentage did steadily improve throughout three seasons at Xavier, it was fairly linear. Shooting beyond the arc is a more nuanced conversation.

This year, Jones knocked down 43.0 percent of the 79 catch-and-shoot threes he attempted. In his sophomore season, that number was 32.3 percent on 62 attempts and he shot 34.6 percent on just 26 total attempts in his freshman year. It’s also worth noting that Jones shot an underwhelming 67.9 percent from the free-throw line in his college career.

When asked about Jones’s history as a three-point shooter, Monte McNair pointed to the aforementioned touch and some of the intangibles they’ve come to learn about Jones.

“Colby’s work ethic, the person that he is, his character; those are the types of things we like to see for guys as they improve throughout college,” McNair said on draft night. “But, it’s all the other stuff that Colby does too. He’s got great touch. The shot improved, obviously, this year but he can get in there and make a play with a pass… Obviously, the shooting is a big part of the NBA these days and we like to see the growth that he’s shown.”

The other aspects of Jones as a finisher become exceedingly difficult to capitalize on if defenders do not respect his shot from beyond the arc. With the extended three-point line in the NBA compared to college, this is the big swing factor for Jones that comes with reasons for optimism. He won’t be asked to take off-the-dribble threes, but his catch-and-shoot number has to be respectable at the very least.

If that proved to be the case, Jones also seems able to attack closeouts and make plays from there. He was a crucial cog in a Xavier offense that was one of the best in the NCAA with stellar ball and player movement that featured similar actions to Sacramento, including a handful of DHOs.

Colby Jones does a little bit of everything but, most importantly, he finds ways to help his team win games. “We’re open to anybody who has proven they can win and help us win. This year happened to be two guys that have been in college for a few years,” McNair said. “Colby is just one of the best two-way players. A winner and those are the things we always look for.”

McNair also pointed out how Colby won an overwhelming majority of his games during his three seasons at Xavier. Including tournament games, Jones went a combined 55-31 (63.9 percent) in college.

“A productive and smart utility player. A defender. A two-way player,” McNair said. “Somebody that we’re really excited to add to the culture that Mike (Brown), myself, and the rest of us are building here. Really a winner, he won almost two-thirds of his games at Xavier so we’re excited to bring him in.”

Sacramento is in a position now where their draftee can expect to win games immediately. Jones projects to be a productive player on-and-off the ball on both ends of the floor thanks to his high IQ, quick decision-making, and variety of ways he can impact the floor.

If he can prove capable of knocking down an above-average percentage of his catch-and-shoot threes and adjust to NBA physicality, Sacramento could end up with a rotational player sooner rather than later, which would be impressive value at pick 34.

It’s far too early to tell, but there’s reason for optimism plugging Jones into a system that already had their identity in place with a clearly defined role and opportunity for himself.

When you said Two-way, I thought he was going to be spending a lot of time in Stockton. Glad it meant offense and defense. Would be great if Josh Hart was his equal.

If he can take over Davis’ and perhaps Delly’s minutes this season, I would consider that a huge draft win for the Kings.

yup, seems like a quality utility player. I’d predict that in year one he’ll take all of Delly’s minutes and that he and Kessler Edwards will compete for the TD and Okpala minutes.

I think he becomes the 5th guard and is not relegated to Stockton. I think Slawson will be a two way. On the other hand, the Kings can save a roster spot by making him one of the 3 two-way players.
Not sure just how much he can play backup PG (the Delly slot) but I do think he replaces TD. He is not a flamethrower off the bench but more of a steady guy-his ceiling is Josh Hart or Brogdon.
My bet- more minutes and more ppg than the duds new Podz guy. Needs to improve his shot off the dribble.

The MM challenge now is to make the Holmes move worth the cost of that.
Was there a plan?
Reid gone, Collins traded for zero but his contract is huge. Don’t want draymoron.
do the Kings need a third PG and more bench guard firepower?

I’d expect he’ll more likely be operating as a small forward defensively, than as a guard, per se. Being able to run the offense occasionally, and a strong defensive effort could mean steady playing time. Jones feels like the right pick.

It’s difficult to label him, but he definitely has some guard skills, and is probably best defensively against guards. He also plays like a wing with his cutting/slashing, and an undersized point forward. He should be able to swing from front-court to back. If he shoots well from deep, he’s a very good player, that’s if.

I think he is a SG/PG. Only 6/5. Not big enough for SF and can guard 1,2 and 3.

My take is that because our guards are relatively small (except for Huerter, who can’t defend anyway), he’d be more likely to defend small forwards, since his size and length are more to the task than Fox, Monk, or Mitchell.

I don’t care who he defends, I know he’s going to bust his ass.

Agree – Big Guards (Devin Booker, Klay Thompson) and Small Forwards (Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler) seems about right. Kessler Edwards for the Small Forwards and smaller Power Forwards. Davion Mitchell for anyone else in the backcourt.

In theory, anyway.

My priority has been getting Pascal. Outside of that, I’d like to extend Domas, bring over Sasha, and resign Lyles. If the Kings do the latter, a cheaper option like PJ Washington makes sense, but you could also just resign Barnes. Everything center around that 4 spot imo.

It’s true, the Kings don’t have a conventional 4. Either Barnes or Murray can play there next to a dominant center like Embiid, but with Domas at the 5, he needs some help patrolling the paint. There are other ways to help this roster, but improving the 4 spot is the obvious way to really upgrade the starting line-up. They could (and should) bring in a big, defensive center to back up Sabonis, and a defender at the two, (Jones?) but it would be best to see a starting quality defensive 4 playing between Domas, and Murray.

Coulda had Jaren Jackson Jr. plus draft other assets instead of Bagley. I know, spilt milk and all. In the meantime, how about Cam Johnson. Give him two tasks, hit corner 3s and rebound.

Getting Washington for something in the $10 mil range would make retaining Barnes and Lyles possible, as well as a Sabonis extension, if my math is right.*

*The salary cap is largely a mystery to me, so that “if” is the size of a small Midwestern town.

PJ provides a bit of rim protection, but he’d also be undersized at PF, so signing him would be more about depth and options than a significant step up. Vezenkov has good size as a stretch four, but as far as I can tell, makes your defense worse. A lot will revolve around whether he comes over or not, and I hope that McNair gave him a hard deadline of Friday to make that decision.

I’d imagine that if Vez does sign, money can be focused on a backup center and players who rebound and defend. A lot of moving parts!

He seems very comfortable operating an offense with a big man who knows how to cut to the hoop. This will come in handy.

Jones looks like a real battler on defense. We’ve been absolutely spoiled by watching Davion the past couple of seasons (and I maintain he’s the best on-ball defender in the league), and that’s a high bar. He definitely seems to understand rotations, and he’s got fight in him.

On offense, I love that he’s not afraid of contact at the hoop, but also employs a very pretty floater when he determines that it’s the better shot. I expect him to get to the line frequently, so hopefully he can get his FT% to 70 percent or better this season, and build from there.

Jones is going to be helping the team, and I’d bet that it’ll be sooner rather than later.

“I maintain he’s the best on-ball defender in the league”

That’s a ballsy statement, thanks. I’m not sure it’s exactly true but, I don’t see anyone doing a better job of stopping dribble penetration than Davion. Maybe that’s saying the same thing (almost). It isn’t impossible to shoot over him, but I’m always surprised how little fans seem to value Davion, even those who profess a need for defense. Here’s hoping Mitchell retires a King!

Great defender. Not a single person doubts that. Beyond high school basketball the expectations change. A player also has to score. If he doesn’t figure out how to do something offensively this season he is headed towards the door.

A whole of bunch of great players that have not been able to stay in the NBA.

I had him top 20 on my big board. Absolutely love the pick and love the value. The guy is simply a baller and will get 15-25 minutes per night over the course of the season.

Rebounding, playmaking, shooting, defense, IQ and experience at #34 – what more could you want? I don’t know how he fell as far as he did, guess he doesn’t have enough “upside.” If “upside” on an NBA prospect doesn’t include making an actual impact in NBA games now and in the future, what the hell does it mean? He’ll make a lot of team look silly like Desmond Bane a couple years ago. Glad he’ll be doing it for the Kings. Another solid draft by Monte imo.

Comps for Colby seem to be in the Brogdon/Marcus Smart realm. If he’s even half those guys, he’s a rotational player.

How many NFL team owners inherited their teams from their fathers? Mara and Davis come to mind. Looks like Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft might do the same. I don’t have a problem with nepotism. I may give my business to my kids. What I have a problem with is when scions are crap managers. That is up to Vivek and Anjali to work on.

The nepotism look is not good, but let us assume that “GM” of the farm team with a qualified coach is a safe place; decisions about personnel will be made in Sac not Stockton and implemented by the coach. If Anjali accepts that then she can sit in the Stockton C-Suite reap the benfits.

We’ll see but I don’t think she will ever be GM. I think Vivek is just grooming her to eventually take over the team as owner. Which… I know this isn’t a popular opinion but, it’s actually a smart move. The fact that her first year as an employee of the franchise she was learning under the GM of the year in the NBA, the GM of the year in the G league and the coach of the year in Mike Brown is pretty awesome. that’s an exceptional Base.

I hope she’s passionate and absorbing and learning as much as she can now because yeah, one day she will be the majority owner of this team. It’s inevitable, and I for one am happy that when that day comes she will have a ton of experience.

I’m a huge optimist in general but this doesn’t make any sense. Vivek isn’t old, how many years does it take to get her prepped to run the team. The best way to prepare her would be to make her earn a real promotion and not be handed something on a silver platter.

Also considering estate tax rules it’s pretty unlikely that she would be able to afford to inherit the team when Vivek passes unless she has some serious money outside of him (and he can’t just give her the money either).

This is just bullshit, we can’t do anything about it and hopefully this doesn’t matter at all. No good way to spin this.

Vivek will pass ownership of his shares to his child/children long before he dies. Making a billion dollars is incredibly difficult, but keeping it has never been easier. No one is getting estate taxed out of maintaining ownership the franchise.

While it maybe true that MM has a plan for the cap-space, and he likely does have at least a sketch of a plan, assuming he has some secret deal in his back pocket smells a lot like horseshit.
