The Sacramento Kings have a fresh distraction thanks to Marvin Bagley III’s father, Marvin Bagley Jr.
The elder Bagley tweeted following Saturday’s loss that the Sacramento Kings should trade his son. The tweet was deleted, but not before one intrepid reporter snagged a screen shot and shared it while adding his own insightful analysis.
https://twitter.com/gwiss/status/1345527822337638405?s=21
This isn’t the first time the Kings have dealt with noise from Costco Brand LaVar Ball, as Bagley Jr loudly complained about how former Kings coach Dave Joerger used his son. But that was a different time. Joerger ended up fired for his relationships (or lack thereof) with many people beyond just the Bagley family.
But that was also a very different front office. That was the Vlade Divac front office that had selected Bagley second overall and had a vested interest in him earning that spot. That was also before Bagley III missed all but 13 games to injury last season.
I criticized Walton for benching Bagley at the end of the Denver game, when Bagley was in the midst of one of his best games as a King. But since that game Marvin returned to earth and was playing the inconsistent ball that we’ve unfortunately come to know.
Now, Marvin is still just six games into a return from missing essentially an entire season. Some rust and inconsistency is to be expected. It’s frustrating yet understandable that Marvin still looks more like a rookie than a third year player given all the time he’s missed.
In his post game media session Coach Walton addressed Bagley Jr’s comments, as well as the progress Bagley III is making:
“My message is always the same: We don’t listen to any of that. It’s us within these walls, us within this locker room and we’re in this together. So, like I always say good or bad, whatever people are saying, we’ve got to do everything we can not to let that effect what we’re trying to get done here.”
“He’s made some nice progress in a short season so far. A lot of it will continue to come, but as far as how far he has to go, everyone has a long way to go still. That’s one of the great things about basketball is even the best can still get better, so we know he’s got a very bright future and we’re going to continue to be patient, continue to teach, continue to work with him on all that stuff, but he’s doing a nice job.”
“He’s been great as far as actively learning, actively searching out to become better and get a better understanding of some of these type of things. So, there’s mistakes happening for sure, but as long as the player is trying and willing to do the things we are asking, you live with those mistakes with young players, it’s the way that our league is and the best teacher is always going to be experience. So the more he goes through things the more he’ll pick them up.”
One has to wonder how Marvin Bagley III feels about all of this. Is his dad speaking his frustrations on his behalf? Is this an embarrassment MBIII would rather avoid. We have no idea, because he hasn’t addressed the issue.
All we know is that Marvin’s play has warranted any more of an opportunity that he’s already receiving, and that noise like this isn’t doing him any favors.
You know who I want to hear from? Marvin the 3rd.
All he has to do is come out the media and say he is dedicated to his teammates, listening the coaching staff while learning a lot, and looks forward to bringing wins to the fans of the Kings.
Keep it simple, stay on target, and put the bullshit to bed. He’s a grown ass man so his words are the ones that count.
Im not in public relations but a simple statement like the one below would go a long way with fans.
“I love Sacramento. Im grateful for the opportunity to play for the Sacramento Kings and I want to make positive contributions on and off the court to help my team win”
BagDad….feel free to use the above quote. Only KH readers would know you cribbed it from the comments section.
Is an insult to the Kirkland Brand
More like dollar store version of lavar
That is low. LOL
No shoes, no shirt, no service….
What about pants?
(asking for a friend)
If the sign doesn’t specify your good!
“This isn’t the first time the Kings have dealt with noise from
Costco BrandSAMS CLUB LaVar Ball” FIXED
How dare you talk bad about my Sam’s club?! I love their mobile app check out!!!
To hijack Rain man… Sam’s Club sucks!
F U Sam’s Club 4 lyfe
I totally disagree. I think he should apologize for his poor play. Retire from the NBA and go be a star in the CBA. Marbury was very successful over there
He’s either shy or incapable or worse, doesn’t want to make this type of public statement to clear the air. McNair probably has already called his agent to clean up this crap like he did with Buddy’s agent.
I would think that Bagley’s agents is pissed about this. Bags only has one more guaranteed deal and this kind of B.S. coming from Bagley Jr. is only going to hurt his son’s value.
At some point a player needs to take responsibility for those that are speaking for him, whether its agent or family member.
It appears that Lonzo has done that. His trade to N.O. may have helped him in more ways than one. Just getting the physical separation from his dad has allowed him to get out from his shadow and nonsense.
Do we know if Bagley Jr lives locally in Sac?
They live in Elk Grove I believe. Little Bags played HS ball at Sheldon
Exactly … if you’re willing to cash grown-ass paychecks, be a grown-ass man and tell Pops to pipe the balls down.
Not sure if we’ll ever hear Marvin address the issue.
And there you have it. SMH, He just couldn’t put it to bed.
Yep, unfortuantely. More:
This is a joke. If Bagley wants to get picky about his playing time, maybe try not sucking. His numbers are terrible. He’s actually getting more minutes than he deserves based on his poor play.
I think he should be playing a lot of minutes, but he doesn’t get to hoist 20 shots per game or play whenever he feels like it just because his dad is the loudest whiner connected to the team.
And to be clear, I would be happy if the Kings traded him. He’s a bad basketball player, isn’t improving, and is becoming a distraction.
Agreed. Vivek will force Vlonty McDivac and Luke to play Pervis Bagley at all costs … they will never admit the colossal 2018 draft night fuckup and will force it down our throats forever.
Trade him to the Wizards, Knicks, Beijing Ducks or whatever team who’ll accept him. Attach some picks if we have to, we have Haliburton.
The hilarious thing is that Greg’s tweet above (“lol what a tool”) was actually “liked” by the Team Bagley twitter account.

Is NOT missing?
All we know is that Marvin’s play has warranted any more of an opportunity that he’s already receiving, and that noise like this isn’t doing him any favors.
Yeah good catch def meant to have a NO on there. I think that maybe we made a mistake already gifting him the starting gig without earning it. Yes we are prioritizing development but shouldn’t they still have to beat someone for the job anyways? Its clear Holmes is the better starting center and we need a stretch 4 for better spacing and maximizing your best players talent Fox drive and kicks. The fact that we are going out of the way to give him the starting Job just to make him happy while playing your best unit to finish the game.
No, I don’t think your #2 pick needs to beat out someone to earn minutes, unless you’re a playoff team. There’s a limited amount of time to find out what you’ve got, and that requires NBA minutes.
Not a kings season without some typical drama coming from somewhere. Bagley should speak to media for sure.
Injuries, being in the shadow of passing on Luka, and his Dad’s antics; if Marvin becomes a solid and consistent player for the kings in the future, he will have to overcome more than the average player. You just start to feel bad for the kid. Getting drawn a very rough hand to start his career. He just can’t seem to catch a break.
Sort of … he has an opportunity to help himself here and he’s not taking it.
Does Bagley Jr actually has any role in his son’s day to day business? If not, I can care less what he has to say. Family and friends can have opinions and the opportunities to express them out in the public. But if he actually plays some role in his son’s business side of things then he needs to shut the f*ck up especially considering Marcus Bagley’s future is at stake.
Good question and a Bagley III’s comment/reaction/statement in the next 1-2 days could shed plenty of light on the influence Jr has on III.
I think the fact that he’s choosing not to say anything about it at all tells alot.
Yes….its not a story. It says so right here.
/eyeroll
Funny, because if it was a non-story to the media, you’d think everyone in the media would not keep asking about it.
/eyeroll
Matt George’s obsession of Bagley is so tunnel vision like Bagley’s on court vision…..first it was the Bagley will win the most improved player of the year award if he plays enough games healthy. Then this non story crap.
Yeah, it’s so ridiculous.
I’m actually looking forward to his pod on Monday. Matt’s gonna go berserk, He does this fake anger thing any time he feels like Bagley is being mistreated, and just starts yelling at this imaginary fan that he’s conjured up in his mind. It’s like Matt’s version of Grant’s rants. It’s pretty funny.
Never trust anyone with two first names, that’s what I always say.
Lil Grant is the worst
Imagine thinking the AM radio board op is an authority on sports journalism.
This is one of those only in Sacramento moments unfortunately.
<sarcasm> Well YOU DONT WORK FOR KHTK, THE RADIO HOME OF THE SACRAMENTO KINGS, DO YOU?!?!?!
</sarcasm>
Bagley isn’t a bust. There is no war in Ba Sing-Se.
More agitprop from Pravda Sacramento.
I’m so tired of talking about Marvin Bagley already.
I’m taking a break.
I’m guessing Luke is also taking a break from him as well.
OT:
THE CLEVELAND BROWNS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!
If we (Browns) can do it, so can we (Kings).
WOOOOOOF!
If I’m not mistaken, that means the only major pro sports team with a longer playoff drought than the Kings are the Seattle Mariners. Right?
Guys, can we focus on the Browns win for one moment? What is this, a Mariners fan forum?
No. The focus is on Sactown. Damn the Browns. Testaverde, Byner, Mack…all of them.
it takes a while to recover from winning 116 games… Kings are still exhausted from winning 50+ that year too. Man…sad to look back and think that 2001 was the best it’s likely to ever be for a Kings fan living in Bellevue.
Only this season and three more and we transform into the Basketball Browns!
The Mariners are at 19 so we are 5 years behind. Doubt we overtake them, especially considering the new play in tournament. Odds are if we are close to average over the next five years we’ll eventually get in via the play in.
Kings are ahead… when you factor the number of play off slots the NBA has as compared to MLB… it is not even close.
Who is the one who downvoted this? Come and downvote it in my face, you sorry Raiders [or insert any other losing org] fan!
Signed, an 11-5 and going to the playoffs Browns fan.
I gave you the upvote. Maybe BagDad doesnt like you.
Congratulations, Rik!
I’ll be rooting for the Browns. 🙂
Well, there you have it.
At best he’s afraid to break with his camp and at worst he agrees with them.
Yes. His choice, but another red flag.
Is not like there aren’t enough red flags about his games already ha. Good job Vlade!
Maybe red flags can be the city jersey theme next season!
I`m with Marvins dad on this, Please trade Marvin Bagley! Win, win, win, we ALL win.
In Sacramento, Bagley might be able to overcome up to 2 of: (1) the Kings passing on Doncic; (2) how much worse he is than Doncic; and (3) responding to his father’s trade demands with don’t ask me about that. But not all three. There will always be die hards that pull for him, but he’s going to hit a tipping point with casual fans. Guy is lucky there are no fans at the home games this week.
The die hard fans are the ones more likely to turn on him. The casual fans don’t care about anything but PPG and hype.
I’m as die hard as they come and I’d be happy with a second rounder for him. Could not care less about the light beer version of the Ball family here in Sacramento.
Kings Fan ” TRADE Marvin Bagley 3rd!!!!”
Marvin Bagley Jr: ” I agree… Trade Marvin.”
Kings Fan “Marvin make your Father shut up!!!!!!!!!”
Sheesh.
it’s almost as if people are mad at Marvin’s dad because he’s behaving childishly, and making his own son look bad.
Or that he is a dad looking after his son’s best interest. I side with his Dad on this one.
So you think it’s a good idea for a dad to embarrass his son’s employer on social media?
I can differentiate between a sports team and a normal business. Sorry if the HUGE differences are confusing. Sheesh… and you confirm my original point.
one point of differentiation is that Bagley has direct lines of communication with his son’s employer. He doesn’t need to go on social media to express his frustration.
Agreed. It’s not that hard. If Marvin’s dad has an issue, then be an adult and request a meeting with the agent, and the agent can meet with Luke. The social media play is, always has been, and always will be extremely weak.
He’s looking out for his son’s best interest in the only platform that’s available to him. I agree with Bill2455 on this one.
See my other comment below.
he’s doing the exact opposite of looking out for his son’s best interest. That’s the point.
So you say. You or I or anyone on this site has no idea about the dynamics within the Bagley family.
If McNair tried to trade him right now, then he’d be negotiating from a position of weakness. Mostly due to Bagley’s poor play and injury history, but also partly because the other 29 teams know Team Bagley wants out.
If McNair tried to trade him right now, then he’d be negotiating from a position of weakness.
So what? We’re trying to make a college center into an NBA stretch 4, and there are no signs of improvement. We already have a slop C, a good one in fact. Addition by subtraction has value I think, as we shouted for months regarding Cousins.
I’ve got no issue with just cutting their losses, and moving Bagley for whatever they can get. But I’m not getting paid to manage the team’s basketball assets.
A loss is a loss. His value peaked the moment his name was read.
Cruel, but hard to refute.
There are other ways to look out for your son other than consistently trashing the organization that employs your son. It’s fitting…Trash Bagley Jr., 3rd, 4th, and 5th.
Helping to decrease his son’s trade value disincentivizes the Kings to trade him.
It’s in Bagley’s best interest to work hard and learn how to play team basketball, not put up numbers like a GLeaguer in 25 minutes per game and then whine about his playing time.
This! Just look at Buddy and Barnes, they’re playing like they want to be traded to a contending team while Bagley just want to hog the ball while playing one-dimensionally.
Who is this specific Kings Fan we are referencing here?
I thought Marvin Bagley Jr. started this whole tweet circus with his trade demand tweet….?
So there have not been Kings fans demanding for Bagley to be traded over the last year+ on this web site?
Kings fans on this web site have been wanting Bagley gone from Day 1. The kid could average 20/10/5 for the rest of the year and still be hit with heavy criticisms.
Sounds like a conspiracy theory to me.
Do you really believe that Kings fans want Bagley gone for no reason? And that even if he was playing great they would want him gone?
People who want him gone have their reasons, but I would bet the reasons are tied to his performance.
The reasons are tied to Luka, and that’s Vlade’s fault not Marvin’s.
Ok, that’s fair.
Some might argue that is Vlade’s fault for picking Bagley higher than he should have gone, yes.
At this point, speaking for myself, I’m disappointed we missed out on not just Luka, but the several other players that are looking a lot better than who we got. (Trae, JJJ, Porter)
Ultimately, he isn’t playing against his draft class. He’s playing against the rest of the NBA. Being better or worse than, say, Robert Williams, doesn’t really matter except in judging Vlade’s draft acumen. What matters is whether Bagley is or will be an impactful NBA contributor and an asset to his team.
Nobody’s comparing him to Luka at this point. The onus is on Bagley to prove he’s a positive NBA contributor. And not have his presence be a distraction while he’s at it.
It would be silly to pretend the Luka thing didn’t have something to do with it – almost as silly as pretending Bagley’s play isn’t deserving of criticism.
I guarantee you if he was going 20/10/5 (ok, I lol’d a bit typing the 5), there would be critics – but he’d also have plenty of fan support.
The kid could average 20/10/5 for the rest of the year and still be hit with heavy criticisms.
But he doesn’t.
In the real world the opponent crafts offensive plays to go right at him until the coach has seen enough.
I wonder what the 5 is from 20/10/5-like 5 turnovers in 25 mins of play or 5 fouls? Plenty of guys can get double double on a nightly basis but it’s empty calorie and it only manifest on this team’s eventual record (no more than 30 wins) , broken locker room, and distaste and vomiting from this fan base. Team Bagley, do us kangz fans a favor by 1) tell jr to shut up 2) cheer for your teammates or simply pass the dang ball to them when they’re open 3) stay healthy
reminds me of this tweet:

/copied to clipboard.
That’s going to be one of the more useful tweets to have in your back pocket.
I’m going to take the under on that. It’s not Bagley’s fault he’s been injured. It is his fault that he’s seemed to learn nothing about playing NBA basketball over the last two seasons. Won’t pass, can’t defend and apparently can’t understand the word “efficient.”
This is ridiculous. Every fan here would love it if Bagley succeeded. This is just the typical lazy sports message board gambit. Your classic strawman/tilting at windmills argument.
Well, let’s see some names. Who? How many?
Those fans would be very few. If Bagley came close to those numbers he’d be the favorite King maybe ever, and we’d be demanding he wins Comeback POY.
If he got half those numbers I’d be okay. My own personal wishes for him are: 1) showing improvement in helping the team win, whatever that is on a game to game basis, and 2) staying as healthy as possible so he’s on the floor.
Huh? That is not what I said at all. Maybe read it again..
Right on cue…
Double down, double down!
Dollar Store Carmichael Dave
Being considered “A poor man’s Carmichael Dave” would make me rethink my career choices.
Did Matt George bet against someone in 2018 on who would have the better NBA career (Doncic/Bagley)? He’s fully invested in him.
Anyway, it’s really not just about Doncic. We lost out on Trae, JJJ, Porter, etc…..
at this point I think one could argue that the Kings other Kings pick that year (Trent Jr.) is more valuable than Bagley.
Maybe it’s like the stock market. Next game that Bagley puts up big stats, sell!
Make phone calls to all other GMs right after the game. Like someone else said, get what you can for him before he gets injured again.
Sadly, most of the reliably comically bad GMs that would buy based on a one-game sample are gone at this point.
One could argue implies there’s actually a debate … Trent is significantly better than Bagley at this point, and it’s not close.
Grant Napear with neither the goodwill nor the controversial statements. Prove me wrong.
I cannot stand the source of this subject matter, but I’ve been laughing for five minutes about the words intrepid reporter given the writer and the analysis plus Costco Brand LaVar Ball. That is gold.
The Intrepid Reporter is the sequel to The Lincoln Lawyer about Greg tweeting from his car
?w=848
The real problem with Costco brand LaVar’s is they only come in an 18 Pak.
Actually, Marvin Jr. doesn’t have to shut up. It’s his right and responsibility as a parent to look out for his son’s best interest. And MBIII is not going to publicly go against his father, nor does he have to address his father’s tweet because you think he should. Two choices here for the Kings, either deal with his Dad and wait for MBIII to develop or trade him for what they can get.
Hey I found the Bagley account!
Which Bagley though?
Team Bagley¢?
𤣠𤣠𤣠ð¤£
Of course he doesn’t HAVE TO shut up. Twitter is all about enabling people to have a public platform no matter how inane their commentary.
That said, he’s done a huge disservice to his son, putting him in a really awkward position. Who knows what the relationship between father and son is like behind the scenes, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if there’s friction. MBIII, if nothing else, doesn’t strike me as an arrogant, loud-mouthed jerk, and if anything, he may just want this to die out on its own because he has to either call out his dad (and piss him off, maybe escalating family drama) or make it seem like he wants out himself.
We’ll never come to a consensus on this issue. Some will say he did his son a disservice, others will say that as parent he’s looking out for his son. It is what it is.
The only consensus there is so far is he’s got glaring holes in his game and somehow he spends very little to zero fox time working on it while rehabbing.
Looks to me like he’s either incapable or unwilling. I guess at least at least unwilling is fixable.
I mean, he’s put his son in a bad situation, no matter how you look at it. Nothing good can come from doing this in a public way, especially at this time.
It’s one thing to have a biased perspective because you’re talking about your kid, but it’s another to have your son here, at the highest level, clearly developing, not dominating, and to be so delusional to think that this type of attitude and approach could be productive in any way.
That’s fair. But maybe as a father he feels he son will develop and dominate in a different organization. Most parents that sense their child is unhappy will do everything within their power to ensure the child’s happiness.
Tweeting to trade him isn’t going to get his son to a different organization any faster.
I think his current trade destinations with his shortcomings and father’s drama in the equation are pistons or the knicks. Now of course it can always get worse when he’s in China if he continues this current trajectory
I mean, his current trade destinations are nowhere because the Kings have zero incentive to trade him at a loss and Bagley doesn’t have any leverage.
My son is 13, and he already blows off anything I have to say about how he plays baseball or basketball by curtly saying: “You’re not the coach.”
If only Bagley had the same attitude.
How, exactly, does what he said benefit his son?
I can’t wait until my kid is old enough and I can go berate her employer. No doubt she will appreciate my efforts to “protect” her.
My son would kill me if I ever did anything like that.
Maybe he could be a better dad by telling his son to toughen up and try not sucking at basketball … there is that.
Fine with me … any chance Dallas will give us Doncic in return?
They’ve had him long enough.
I dunno man, I’ve been seeing comments that Doncic is already on the decline. Might be washed up, ya know?
If they won’t give up Luka, I’d take Willie back for Pervis.
It’s not that hard. If Marvin’s dad has an issue, then be an adult and request a meeting with the agent, and the agent can meet with Luke. The social media play is, always has been, and always will be extremely weak.
Or, Marvin could always, you know, be a grownup and meet with Luke on his own and see what he can do to get more PT … there is that.
I have questions and thoughts, If anything I’m puzzled that his Dad is asking for a trade, as Bagley has been essentially injured for most of his career to date and I’d like to think now he is healthy lets get used to hoops and NBA speed. That and he isn’t playing that well
Its not like the Kings have to do anything as don’t they have the leverage currently
Should the Kings want to trade him, I’d be fascinated as to what his value is and what the Kings would get for him by himself, or as a package if you traded him with other players
Are the Kings fans really mad or are they just bemused or resigned to the situation?
It is refreshing with the increase in media options online that the Matt Georges of the world can be mocked or ignored like a fart in the wind when they carry the teams water.
