Kings narrow down general manager search to three names

For the six teams still competing in the NBA playoffs, it’s been business as usual. For the 24 teams that are watching the playoffs from home, there is as much certainty about the 2020-21 season as there was about the resumption of the 2019-20 season in February.

While there is a tentative date for the 2020 NBA Draft, there still isn’t much clarity on when the 2020-21 season will start. Assuming the Nov. 18 date for the 2020 NBA Draft holds, it would be in the Sacramento Kings’ best interest to name their new general manager within the next month.

The Kings began their search for a new general manager shortly after Vlade Divac resigned from his position on August 14. Since then, they’ve heard a few noes from their shortlist of candidates, but they’ve had success with others— so much that they’ve narrowed down their search to three names, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The interviews will likely be conducted by Kings owner Vivek Ranadive and Joe Dumars, the latter of whom assumed the role as executive vice president of basketball operations when Divac resigned. Dumars withdrew his name for consideration for the general manager job, according to a report from Sam Amick and Shams Charania of The Athletic in August.

With De’Aaron Fox and Bogdan Bogdanovic due new contracts in the offseason and a number of the team’s smaller internal free agents set to hit free agency, it might be an understatement to say that it’s crucial that the Kings nail this hiring. The fact that they’re interviewing more than one person is a good start, but that’s a low bar to clear.

The Kings went 31-41 in the 2019-20 season, including 3-5 in the seeding games in Orlando, and haven’t made the playoffs since 2006.
