Sacramento Kings fans hate the sight of purple and gold — I don’t think it needs to be spelled out why. But what if I told you that there was another purple and gold jersey that Kings fans and NBA fans alike love to hate?
I’m, of course, talking about the infamous gold Kings jerseys.
The jerseys were introduced as alternates in 2005, and the Kings had the audacity to bring them back for another season in 2006. It answered the age-old question of: “How could we possibly make worse jerseys than the 1994 checkered jerseys?”
To their credit, the Kings did it with flying colors (no pun intended).
The jerseys are so bad that, in ESPN’s ranking of the worst 10 jerseys in NBA history, the gold Kings jersey ranked No. 1, ahead of the metallic jerseys the Dallas Mavericks wore for one game during the 2003-04 season, and the 2013 Christmas jerseys. Surely, one would think that if the Kings were to respond to this, it would to defend themselves, right?
Well, that’s not what happened.

In their defense, it’s really hard to defend the jersey. For whatever reason, gold is a really hard color to pull off on a jersey. Like, the only team that’s been able to do it successfully is the Toronto Raptors, and even then, they’ve used gold as secondary color, not a primary color. The only other team that was bold enough to go back to the gold was the Washington Wizards, and they ranked 10th on ESPN’s ugliest jersey list.
Now, are the Kings’ gold jerseys the ugliest jersey in NBA history? That’s debatable, but are they ugly? Yes.
