Royal Reading: All-time Sacramento Kings team

The Athletic’s Jason Jones picks his squad, plus more Kings links from around the web.

The Sacramento Kings have had more ups than downs over their history, but the team has had some special players wear its jerseys.

The Athletic’s Jason Jones put together his squad of the 12-best Kings since the team relocated to Sacramento from Kansas City in 1985.

Here is how his team looks:

Starters

PG: Mike Bibby, SG: Mitch Richmond, SF: Peja Stojakovic, PF: Chris Webber, C: DeMarcus Cousins

Bench: Doug Christie, Vlade Divac, Rudy Gay, Bobby Jackson, Kevin Martin, Brad Miller, Metta World Peace (Ron Artest), Lionel Simmons, Reggie Theus, Wayman Tisdale,

Coach: Rick Adelman

It’s no surprise to see six players from the 2001-02 team that had the best season in franchise history. Webber, Bibby, Peja and Christie all hold a special place with the organization for their contributions during the Kings best years. Divac built up a lot of credit during his playing days, but he has burned through that real quick for his decisions as an executive.

Richmond is an easy choice. He was one of the best guards in the league during his tenure in Sacramento, but a lack of team success didn’t allow him to get the credit he deserved.

Although Boogie’s tenure was a tumultuous one, it’s hard not rank him as the best player out of the three centers on Jones’ list, although Miller, who eventually succeeded Divac, had back-to-back All-Star seasons.

De’Aaron Fox is the one player on the current roster who has the chance to make this list sooner than later. If he can lead the team back to the playoffs, either this year or next, Fox will definitely have a case to replace either Bobby Jackson or Doug Christie.

Are there any players that you would put on your team that is missing from Jones’ list?

Onto some more links:

Speaking of Richmond, he recently appeared on the, “Purple Talk,” podcast and discussed several topics. From playing against Michael Jordan, to how he would fit in today’s NBA, Richmond has tons of interesting things to say. Definitely give it a listen when you can. (NBC Sports)

Marvin Bagley hasn’t lived up to expectations since being drafted No. 2 overall in 2018. The former Duke Blue Devil played all but 13 games this year and has struggled to stay healthy during his short time with the Kings. NBC Sports’ James Hamm looks at where Bagley fits in the team’s long-term plans.

If you missed assistant coach Jesse Mermuys’ first coaching clinic yesterday, you’ll still have the opportunity to learn from an NBA coach. Mermuys will run a clinic on transition offense on May 6 at 6 p.m., followed by end of game sideline out of bounds plays on May 9 at 3 p.m. on the Kings’ Instagram page.

From around the NBA:

I wish I had as much money as Michael Jordan. His agent David Falk shares a story of the time MJ turned down a huge offer (nine figures) for simply making an appearance at an event. (CBS Sports)
