Chris Webber says there’s nothing he wanted more in the world than to work for Kings

It’s been a long 15 years for the Sacramento Kings. The franchise hasn’t been in the playoffs since 2006, is mired in a 1-10 slide, and sits 13th in the Western Conference.

The last time the Kings were considered contenders was during the early part of the century. Led by Chris Webber, Vlade Divac and Mike Bibby, Sacramento was one of the best teams in the league between 2000 and 2005.

One of the core players from those teams had the opportunity to run the franchise. Unfortunately, Divac couldn’t get the job done. The Kings went 162-238 during Divac’s tenure, and he was replaced by new general manager Monte McNair last offseason.

Another member of those famous Sacramento squads also wanted the opportunity to take over the basketball operations. Webber was on The Real Ones podcast with Raja Bell and Logan Murdock and was asked about working for the Kings. He says he has the opportunity to interview with the team but was ultimately passed over.

Webber — whose jersey is hanging in the rafters of the Golden 1 Center — added that he was already envisioning how he would run things if he was given the job.

Webber is one of the best players in franchise history. He averaged 23.5 points and 10.6 rebounds over his seven seasons in Sacramento. Webber is currently an analyst for TNT and is also involved in several other ventures. Even though he wasn’t hired, he still has a lot of for the city.

Who knows how things would have gone under Webber’s watch but don’t rule him out for a future position with the organization.

What is your favorite memory of Webber’s time with the Kings?
