NBA fans like the play-in, but has it been good for the Kings?

The potential of the play-in appears to have led to some bad decision-making for the Kings.

The play-in tournament has shaken up how teams approach the end of the season. Instead of selling off players at the trade deadline, several teams ranging from the ninth to the 12th seed in each conference tried to make a playoff push with more spots available.

If the goal was to discourage punting the remainder of the year, then the play-in tournament is having the desired effect. Nearly two-thirds of fans believe the new format is keeping more teams engaged and preventing at least some teams from tanking for a draft pick.

More than that, a nearly identical percentage of fans find the concept of a play-in game exciting.

Kings fans might have a different opinion of the play-in, since it caused the team to artificially inflate its hopes of making the postseason. Would the franchise be better off going forward had they moved Harrison Barnes, Richaun Holmes, or Hassan Whiteside? Who knows? But for the now, the current group isn’t succeeding at a high level even with its crop of veterans. Whether the play-in will be exciting or not, it won’t involve Sacramento.

As a result, per the latest Reacts survey, 30 percent of Kings fans are confident the team is headed in the right direction. That’s down from 47 percent last week and 72 percent the week before.
