NBA Free Agency 2017: Kings meeting with JaVale McGee, which makes no sense

This is the first real headscratcher of the offseason.

The Kings seem to be choosing a smarter path towards relevancy these days. Ten of the players on the roster are on their rookie contracts, and they’ve acquired solid veteran help in the likes of George Hill and Zach Randolph. The only thing they really need now is a Small Forward.

So naturally they’re meeting with JaVale McGee on Thursday.

This doesn’t make sense at all, at least not with the roster as currently constructed. The Kings have three players already who are dedicated centers, and two more in Skal Labissiere and Harry Giles who can play the position in certain situations.

Furthermore, while McGee experienced a bit of a career renaissance in Golden State last season, the Warriors limited his playing time to just about 10 minutes a game and didn’t ask him to do anything aside from block shots, rebound and dunk. The Warriors have the depth and talent to hide a player like McGee’s flaws, and the Kings don’t.

Even if the Kings moved Kosta Koufos or one of their other centers, this wouldn’t be a move I’d like. Hopefully this is just a courtesy meeting.
