Shortly after the news that the Kings have signed George Hill broke, Adrian Wojnarowksi also broke the news that the Kings have come to an agreement on a two year, $24 million deal with Zach Randolph.
This move gives the Kings the banger inside that they were seeking, and it will be good for all of Sacramento’s young bigs to go up against Z-Bo in practice every day. Randolph will reunite with Dave Joerger, who coached him in Memphis. It’s unclear if Randolph will be as willing to take a 6th man role for Sacramento as he was doing in Memphis last year, where he averaged 14.1 points and 8.2 rebounds off the bench for the Grizzlies.
The deal is pretty expensive for a 36 year old Power Forward on a rebuilding team, but Randolph is still a quality player and brings a dimension that the Kings don’t have. He’s also gone through a ton of different experiences in his career, from being the malcontent on a rebuilding team to becoming the savvy vet of a contender.
With Hill and now Randolph, the Kings have acquired two quality veterans at positions of need. However, unless there’s some tricky cap maneuvering I’m unaware of, it doesn’t appear the Kings have enough space to offer a max deal to Otto Porter, as they only have about $20 million in projected space and Porter’s max will be about $24.8 million to start. We’ll see where that situation goes, because the Kings still need a starter at Small Forward.
