Kings vs. Lakers Preview: A Rivalry Interrupted

The Kings and Lakers have a storied past, but cruel twists of fate have put hatred on hold.

Long have I hated the Los Angeles Lakers. We all have. Some of us transplants from other areas who grew to love the Kings at a time where beating the Lakers was possible, some born and raised in the basement watching the Kings struggle for years to climb out, either pre-Kings heyday or post – it really doesn’t matter. The Lakers have always been there to gloat, to rub it, to finish every discussion with whatever the decade equivalent was to SIXTEEN CHAMPIONSHIPS BRO!!! Their losses were twice as nice to see, their successes twice as painful. Even when the Lakers and Kings shared six years of basement dwelling together, their high horse finally muddied and scarred, we knew it was only a matter of time before they pulled some bullshit and paid their way out again. Then they did. Life can be a bit less complicated at the bottom of the NBA pecking order. We get to throw shit wherever you like because what are they going to do? Throw it back? We’re already covered it it!

It’s a pastime of yours truly and thousands more of us to take every opportunity available to trash the Lakers. Best record in the NBA or drafting Lonzo Ball over De’Aaron Fox – the Lakers have always been a green light to screw with. I truly consider it a duty and a privilege to talk endless shit about our Southern California rivals.

Today, and for the foreseeable future, that’s going to change. I’ve already spoken in length about the death of Kobe Bryant. The comment thread in that article was truly the best of this community that I’ve seen here since the Relocation Saga and possibly the last great moment (in my mind) for this site before it turns into a clickbait, bizzaro version of all that makes it great.

There won’t be Lakers slander today from me. Probably not for the rest of this season. It’s odd to say that. It’s for the worst of reasons. But, this isn’t a rock and a hard place. It isn’t difficult at all. The Lakers franchise, possibly for the first time in my life, has my respects.

For Your Consideration

In lieu of a preview today, I’m linking the fund created by Vanessa Bryant to support the seven other victims of the tragedy last Sunday. I can’t pour my soul out and beg for funds. I won’t wax poetic for you. I just want to bring awareness to it and this is the one space that I have and the best time for me to do it. Please consider donating.

Prediction

Someday, down the road, we’ll get to bask in the sunlight and talk smack about the Los Angeles Lakers again. Some day, down the road.
