FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton on 2020 NBA Draft prospect Patrick Williams

The Sacramento Kings hold the 12th pick, and Williams could be a great fit with the team.

New Sacramento Kings general manager Monte McNair wants to focus on building the team through the draft. He alluded to how important picks are during his introductory press conference and will have his first chance to add an impact player when the Kings pick 12th in the 2020 NBA Draft.

One player who is projected to be selected in the Nos. 10 to 15 range is Florida State forward Patrick Williams. The freshman averaged 9.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game for the Seminoles last season. Williams is considered to be one of the better wing defenders available this year, which is something Sacramento needs. His defensive rating was 94.1 last year.

The 19-year-old needs to improve his shooting if he wants to get meaningful minutes at the NBA level. Williams shot 32% from beyond the arc. I caught up with FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton to discuss Williams’ potential and how he could with the Kings.

SB NATION: How did Patrick grow during his freshman year with the Seminoles?

Leonard Hamilton: My thoughts on Patrick is that he will give you whatever you ask him to give you. He’s right at 6’8, he’s a tremendous athlete with big, strong hands. He’s also quick, he can guard one through five, he’s strong enough to dead-front the post and be physical inside. He’s quick enough to defend a point guard on a switch. He is a tremendous shot blocker. He rebounds in crowds. He is physically mature, he came out of high school went around 225-230 (lbs). He is really, really physically mature beyond what most incoming freshmen would have in college. So he already has an NBA body. He shoots the three, he has a great pull-up, is extremely athletic and can finish at the rim.

SBN: How long do you think it will take Patrick to find his footing in the pros?

LH: I think he will be able to come in and contribute right away. He’s been challenged every day in practice not to take any possessions off. He’s a great teammate, he has an unselfish spirit. That’s the way our system works in Florida State. And I think you’re gonna be extremely surprised how quickly he transitions into the NBA system. There’s no physical limitations. He’s quick and fast and athletic, strong, and he has the skills. Obviously, he’s probably the youngest player in the draft, so it’s gonna take some maturity for him to assimilate into the NBA system and style of play.

SBN: How do you think Patrick will fit in if he is picked by the Kings with the 12th pick?

LH: I would be surprised if he’s available at 12. But if he is, it will be a steal. That’s my assessment of it. However, I haven’t seen all the other players. Yes, this is his college coach talking. Like I said earlier, Patrick has the potential to be whatever you teach him to become, you know, whatever role you give him. He shoots threes. He has a great one-two dribble to pull up. He’s athletic, can finish at the rim. He runs like a deer. He is very strong. He physically has the pro skills already and the athleticism. So, I think he will he will give you whatever the coach asked him to give the team. He’s more than capable. So, when I look at Sacramento, I think he will complement (De’Aaron) Fox very well and can join a young team there. The fans in Sacramento would love Patrick.
