Gonna be weird and fun to watch this without a rooting interest due to making the playoffs. I know there was that one year the Kings didn’t even have a 1st rounder, but that’s different because we still sucked and was managed horribly.
Yup and I’m not quite sure if we’re going to do a big board this year since we’re not in the lottery. But I expect Brenden to maybe start looking at prospects in our range a week or 2 from now so that we can have some content about our draft selection.
Early candidates for me that I want for the Kings would be
-Hood-Schifino (although I’m pretty sure he won’t be available when the Kings make their pick unless they move up via trade).
-GG Jacskon
-Maxwell Lewis
-Noah Clowney
-Jalen Wilson
-Julian Strawther
I wouldnt mind if Murray dropped.. like Lewis out ofPepperdine, really like Trayce Jackson Davis more than Clowney.. world be mad if Rupert or Couilibaly fell to us
TJD is a real possibility with our 37th pick if the Kings decide to keep their 2nd round picks. He’s 23 years old and knowing Monte, he doesn’t mind drafting older rookies plus.
Agreed. I think my favorite is Noah Clowney…love the possiblity of his defense. I think the Kings would be really happy with GG Jackson, Noah Clowney, or Kris Murray.
With Vazenkov “coming over” would like to get an athletic, defensive Big to come off the bench and help with interior defense and rebounding.
Not gonna lie…had to watch him, and man Im glad I did haha. He is a freak athlete that I am 100% ok if the Kings get him. Wow! Some of those clips were insane. Imagine him running the floor with Fox and or cutting with Sabonis’ passing.
I still like Clowney’s shooting stroke with defense…but Bilal is fun. Backup 3,4,5 of Vazenkov, Bilal OR Clowney, Lyles is very versatile. And then sign a physical 5 to replace Len like Reid.
Sidy Cissoko or Bilal would be a good get. Not quite sure if they are the “Monte type of pick” but who knows?? This is the first time Monte is picking in the 1st round that is not in the lottery so maybe he change his pattern a little bit and is more open to taking a chance at a project like Sidy or Bilal.
Monte also hasn’t taken any youngsters. 3 drafts and 3 straight upperclassmen in the lottery. Even his 2nd round picks, with the exception of Jami’us Ramsey were multiple year college players.
Yup! That’s why I didn’t include Sidy Cissoko on my list even though I’m quite intrigue with what he can bring defensively and could be a potential Barnes replacement in a couple of years.
My Hot Take of the Day:
There is a difference in drafting to “get better now” and not.
The draft pick is not going to move the needle for the Kings, upperclassman, one and done, whatever, whomever.
I think he (Monte) trades the pick anyway, but he may just take a flyer on a prospect who floats his boat, even if they are a teen. Maybe one that drops – remember the 2016 draft? You should – the Kings traded out of the #8 spot and went to #13 and #28.
I won’t harm your attitude with telling you who GM Divac drafted at #13 – but I will remind you that Sac drafted #28 (between #27 Pascal Siakam and #29 Dejonte Murray) to pick Skal Labiessiere.
Dejonte Murray was a 19 year old at #29. Geoff Petrie drafted Gerald “Crash” Wallace at #25 who was 19 during the Kings glory years.
My point:
The Kings have an open field without a mandate other than talent acquisition. Picking an upperclassman to contribute sooner than later should no longer be on the agenda.
Cissoko would fill some needs with defense and physicality. He also plays uptempo and moves the ball, which fits. The shot might be okay. He’s young.
there are many other players I like, but the one I do NOT want to draft is Clowney. I was not that impressed with the tape. It was such an uphill climb to build a respectable playoff team that the risk of putting “clown” back in the algorithm is not worth taking.
Some other names that I like include Klintman (who might have a 1st round promise already) and Jalen Slawson. Andre Jackson is worth a look. So is Adamsite’s guy Coulibaly.
lots of intriguing bigs, probably in the 2nd round.
draft and stash candidates: Ousmane N’Dyiaye and Tristan Vucevic. Length and shooting.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he trades the pick. If he keeps it, I think he sticks with selecting college players who have 2-4 years experience rather than the one and dones type. Jalen Wilson, Julian Strawther and Maxwell Lewis fits that bill.
IMO #24 won’t get anyone close who would help us right now. Why not trade he pick with say Holmes and go for a player that would help now say a backup center to help Sabonis or even a sign and trade with Barnes as a possible chip.
It is sure different blowing past the projected lottery picks and trying to zero in on the non-lottery guys. Also, my level of faith in this front office has removed a lot of the second guessing, at least for me.
It’s been over fifteen years, but this team is actually more fun to follow when they’re playing!
I don’t know about the rest of you but a want Wemby going East. I don’t want another franchise altering talent in the West. I have to admit, I’ll be a little miffed if the Spurs land him. They’ve had just 5 lottery picks since they got David Robinson #1 in 1987.
If the Spurs get win the lottery, that would be three #1 picks in 7 tries.
Not gonna lie, I thought there was maybe just possibly something I didn’t know about our first rounder this year that could lead to landing in the lottery – not first, but the lottery. Damnit TKH!
oh my goodness – the clicking however many times it would take to have the Kings land the top spot and then keep track of that. Them were the days.
And you can have’em.
Here is an opinion with some names to keep in mind. To me, the Kings should be focusing on the forward position in the draft. The youth the team currently has at guard is deep. I have a hard time seeing any SG or PG in this draft in our range getting any minutes on this team next year. Typically top 30 picks get a roster spot and filling one with a SG or PG seems ill advised when you have a forward position that on paper really only projects Keegan Murray as a long term King. Picking at 24 seems like a good strategical position to be focused on selecting the best forward you can get. It’s a player that might be needed after the free agency market works itself out (are we keeping any of Barnes, Lyles, Edwards?). A rookie forward might actually get some minutes this season depending on how things play out and it’s a player that at worst gives you a good option for replacement come the following season, his sophomore season. With that logic in mind, I listed every forward that was ranked as a top 50 selection in a couple different mock drafts.

and yes to all you best player available people out there. That’s a very fair argument. I’m not against that strategy.
what so ever. Especially with our exec of the year who has an excellent draft selection history.
I’d love Bilal or Leonard Millercat 24. Bilal I feel like would take a little bit more time to develop but when he does, he’s gonna be a player. I’d also love to have both Murray twins on this team almost more than any other potential pick at 24.
If he’s still around the 2nd round pick, I’d totally take a flier on Bates and see what our coaching staff can do with him. Has made some questionable decisions but there is talent there. At worst, he’s a bench scorer in my opinion
Overall I have 0 clue what we end up doing but In Monte We Trust
Really? I thought the Kings had a permanent labelled seat.
I hope an East team wins or if it is the West- the SAS.
I used to watch with fear, trepidation and hope. Now I won’t watch out of fear that it is the Mavs.
Still a juicy pick for Portland to shop in a trade to go in on Dame one last time. Or you trade Dame and use this pick as a starting point for a rebuild.
At this point I think they should trade Dame and rebuild around this pick, Simons and Sharpe.
Even crazier, the Spurs traded away a very good Jacob Poeltl to get the Raptors 2024 first round pick at the deadlin. They traded away their starting center only to land a generational center in the lottery. The stars aligned for them.
Felt bad for Detroit for moving down to 5th.. Reminds me back in 09′ when we had the worst record and ended up picking 4th! Wembenyama to the Spurs is crazy! Pop ain’t retiring soon now that he has Wemby!
Was hoping Charlotte wins the lottery but I ain’t mad Spurs got the #1 pick.. Wembanyama deserves to go to a stable and classy franchise such as the Spurs..
Definitely the best possible outcome for that kid. Getting to learn from Gandolff will do wonders for his nba career out the gates. Would have preferred him out of the west though but I love that he goes to the spurs for him personally
And that, as they say, is that.
(scarf flip)

Heavy rooting interest for me, hoping the first pick lands in the East and not the West.
I’m just glad we don’t have to watch 30 minutes of “talking” before we actually get to the reveal.
Man I miss talking about the draft and breaking down prospects. We got used to it for 16 years, that it became a habit for me this time of the year.
Were we already discussing prospects and starting a draft board this time last year? The draft is what, a month away?
Yup and I’m not quite sure if we’re going to do a big board this year since we’re not in the lottery. But I expect Brenden to maybe start looking at prospects in our range a week or 2 from now so that we can have some content about our draft selection.

I do love the guy. Monte may not.
the 24 is a crap shoot.
any of the 3 internationals might be there- Couliby, Rupert or Cissoko, some unproven big guys- Clowney, Jackson
but Monte likes college guys with production- that category is weak at 24- Colby Jones or Jacquez
I bet he trades it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he trades the pick. If he keeps it, I think he sticks with selecting college players who have 2-4 years experience rather than the one and dones type. Jalen Wilson, Julian Strawther and Maxwell Lewis fits that bill.

Yep, hoping Wemby lands in the East, preferably DET, it’d be nice for that franchise to be relevant again.
Hoping he lands in Chicago so I could see him locally along with Bedard.
Would be nice for that franchise to be relevant again as well.
Robinson
Duncan
Wembanyama
That would just be ridiculous.
This aged well.
…holy guacamole!
