Miami 121, Sacramento 110: Kings drop another game to a shorthanded team

Once it was announced how many Heat players would miss Monday night's game, the result practically wrote itself.

SACRAMENTO — I don’t listen to a ton of national sports podcasts, but the one I do has a decidedly Miami bent. As such, I know more about Miami basketball, and specifically Heat Culture, than I have ever cared to.

That’s why, when it was announced that in addition to star Jimmy Butler, Miami would be without Tyler Herro, Josh Richardson, and Terry Rozier, it felt like the Kings were in trouble Monday night. Add in Sacramento’s propensity to play down to their competition and their track record on the second night of a back-to-back, and it seemed everyone was anticipating a loss coming into game 57.

In that sense, the home team did not disappoint.

If it’s been said once, it’s been said a thousand times: the Kings playing a team missing its star is a recipe for disaster. The Kings have losses that could be deemed inexcusable alongside wins that make them look like legit title contenders. But the difference between a true contender a team that is still a step or two away was evidenced Monday night, as a significantly less talented Heat team used their winning culture and championship pedigree to overcome their missing members and earn a 121-110 win.

Mike Brown spoke on Heat Culture and why it’s something so uniquely special in a league that can often be ‘me-first’. “You can’t replicate it, you’ve got to have your own culture. It’s hard to do the same thing that somebody else is doing, but the reality is, from top to bottom, they believe in toughness, playing hard, and playing the right way: Brown said. “Once you get it from within, you have the buy in from your main guys, the sky is the limit. Everyone else that joins that team, they’ll have to follow their lead or they’re out.”

The defensive effort for the home team, a thorn in Brown’s side all season, was lackadaisical at best from the start, as the Heat shot well over 50% from the field in the first half on their way to a 65-62 lead at the break. By midway through the third quarter, Sacramento looked tired, showing more fatigue from their back-to-back than the Heat did from their shortened rotation. The Miami lead stretched to as many as 20 in the third quarter, and Sacramento went into the final frame facing that very deficit. Boos reigned down on the Kings from a Golden 1 crowd that sported plenty of red, as another disappointing home loss seemed a certainty as the minutes ticked down.

For us, it’s just bringing the fight every night,” Keegan Murray said after the game regarding his teams’ showing. “That’s something we have control over, we have control over our effort every night.”

But one thing you can say about this team: they rarely give up. The 20 point lead shrunk to six midway through the fourth quarter, as Keegan Murray and Kevin Huerter got hot from deep, bringing the crowd back into the game. Huerter cut it to four with a jumper with five minutes to play, but Bam Adebayo answered with a bucket off an offensive rebound seconds later. A Heat turnover led to a De’Aaron Fox layup to cut the lead to just two, but Jaime Jaquez Jr scored back to back buckets showcasing his impressive footwork and body control to put his team back up six with just over two minutes to play.

Murray, playing with five fouls, got a stop on Jaquez only to see Adebayo poke the ball out of Domantas Sabonis’ hands on the rebound. Murray recovered, getting a steal on the same possession that led to a transition dunk, but Adebayo responded right back with another two in the lane. Huerter missed a three with the Kings down six and a minute to play, and Caleb Martin’s dunk on the ensuing possession put the exclamation mark on the loss.

Though the switch flip in the fourth was competitive, it was too little, too late. “We’re competitive,” Murray said. “We know that we can’t dig ourselves in that hole – we’ve done it a lot this year. We just have to [compete] for four quarters.”

Fox agreed, complimenting his team’s performance down the stretch, but also giving credit to a Miami team that played well all night long. “They came in here and they played well, both offensively and defensively,” Fox said. “We fought back and got back into the game, but they beat us to the majority of the 50/50 balls, so some of the effort we have to be better. But they played better than us tonight.”

The Kings turned it over 15 times, including seven by Fox, as Miami’s zone defense flustered the home team. “Their activity, getting in passing lanes, being physical, turning us over,” Fox explained. “We haven’t seen as much zone out of anyone in the league as we have from them.”

Murray added, “They take away a lot of the things that we are good at.”

Though Sabonis had yet another triple double – his 21st of the season, Adebayo was just as good, backing down any would be defender with ease, draining turnaround jumpers, and leading the offense with seven assists in addition to his game-high 28 points. Kevin Love had a throwback game off the bench, scoring 19 points in 15 minutes while pulling down seven rebounds. Jaquez impressed throughout the evening, dominating his one on one opportunities to the tune of 26 points on 12-17 shooting. Kings players were complimentary of the rookie.

I remember playing him in summer league,” Murray said. “I feel like he’s added a lot to his game since then. Whatever they’re doing in Miami, it’s helped him a lot, you can tell.”

Fox added, “he’s been a matchup problem for a lot of people. He just has game that works in a lot of [systems]. He’s not super shifty but he understands how to play, how to use his body, and he made tough shots. His one on one game was really big today.”

Brown said simply, “He’s a really good young player and he earned every bucket he got. He just hit shot after shot after shot.”

Murray finished with 28 points on 10-14 shooting (6-7 from deep), and frankly needed more shots down the stretch. All five starters were in double figures for the Kings, as Fox added 27, Huerter and Sabonis 14, and Harrison Barnes 10. Malik Monk led the bench with eight.

Though Brown bristled at the thought that his team doesn’t show up when opposing stars don’t, saying “I don’t feel like it’s a trend that every time we play a team and their number one, number two, or number three guy is out and we lose,” it certainly feels that way at times. And games like this are where the championship pedigree of an organization that has been to conference finals and won multiple championships shows why.

Sacramento won’t have much time to lick their wounds before another tough game looms, as they travel to Denver to take on the Nuggets Wednesday night. With the calendar turning to March, the Kings can look ahead to 11 games on their home floor in the coming month, including a potential “get right” six game home stand. With the season winding down, the playoff position jockeying is getting more intense, and protecting their home court over the next 30+ days will be more important than ever.

Everything remains ahead for this team, but they will need to lock in.

Murray put it simply, saying, “we just have to bring it every night.”

Agreed. It’s so bad that it’s almost charming.

At least the come back in the 4th was exciting. Shame Jimmy was suspended, he’s always good to watch

If you play 3 quarters and your opponent plays 4 – you’re gonna lose.

The Miami “swarm the ball” D mixed with the zone, obviously frustrated Sacramento.

Heat won the 50/50 balls, and hats off to Jacquez Jr. and Bam for pulling out buckets when they needed them in the 4th, and Kevin Love who led the Miami charge in the 3rd that dug the hole the Kings never quite climbed out of. As you stress in your write up – Spo’s team outworked the Kings for the full 48. With a performance like this, you can see why last playoffs the Heat brought down Giannis and the Bucks and Jason and Jaylen’s Celtics. Miami plays playoff intensity level ball all season which prepares them for the post season – because, like tonight, the more talented Kings took the loss. As you said Heat Culture.

Pretty game from Keegan who seems to be getting his offense together while keeping his defense active despite some tough calls.

Noticing how Coach Brown is extending the starter minutes – Domas with 40min, Fox 38.5, Huerter almost 38, Murray almost 36.

Disappointing defeat – Kings didn’t lose, they were defeated.

Next.

Based on the lack of talent on the Heat roster, and the various injuries they have every year. Spoelstra keeps them competitive and winning. He should probably get more Coach of the Year accolades every season.

Spoelstra is the Sabonis of coaches. He just does the right thing, day after day, game after game, and largely goes unnoticed. He’s the new Pop.

I believe that every time we’ve gotten to 10 wins over 0.500 this season, we’ve lost the next two games. That would suggest we’re in for a loss in the next game too. I hope this trend doesn’t continue.

is it me or was Huerter’s defense atrocious down the stretch?

Anyways, I didn’t understand the assuming the win run up to this game, the Heat have the players and culture to give the Kings the business on a b2b regardless of no Jimmy/herro

Huerter tries, he just doesn’t get the desired results. Not sure if it is lack of athleticism, awareness, etc. or a combination of all of those things. He basically needs to score about 15-20 points a game to cover his poor defense. That is why I think he won’t be on the team to begin next season.

I think there is a slim chance of that happening. They have the data now to show that improvement didn’t really happen, and another year with the same crew ain’t going to be any better. I could see Barnes and Huerter on different teams, same with Monk and Mitchell. Now, all 4 of them being gone might be a bit much, but some combination of the 4 will be on new teams next season.

Depending on how the contract thing plays out, I think they would. Bot sure what the Kings can offer versus other teams in free agency. Don’t think the Kings can offer as much with their current cap situation.

It is/was very frustrating to see Huerter not traded for D.

Monte has bet on shooting but has waaay too many bad defenders. Heurter/Monk/Barnes(now)-Sabs just average. Lyles/Vez.

They need D at 2 spots at least now. If Duarte could shoot at all-but can’t.

Hoping Monte fixes this in off season but look at Miami. There are alotta 3(good enough) and D guys out there and/or developed.

Shooting alone ain’t winning championships. Have to play D and have to be able to score in the 1/2 court.

No I think you were right Huerter’s defense wasn’t very good and what I say was Adebayo taking Sabonis to the cleaners down low. Sabonis might have a good night offensively but also as he often does misses layups and free throws. Adebayo also played him great down low. For me was the fact that we played so well against the Clips(one of my favorite games this year) and then play so terrible against a team missing three key players. Brown says this isn’t a trend. I disagree. This is a trend all year and we need to understand it and fix it or the Kings will be playing a lot of golf, Why when a player goes 6 for 7 from three we don’t keep giving him the ball. I just don’t understand this. Also Banes and Monk only played 20 minutes last night. Barnes already had 10 points and was looking good but IMO didn’t play enough. Duarte was in 17 minutes and didn’t score a basket. Barnes could have played no less. Down that stretch coming back why not play your most energetic player. Lyles was Okay last night but Monk is your catalyst and usually hits those shoots in a game like that.

I told myself at halftime that this wouldn’t have a positive King’s outcome and you know what? I was right. This team can’t stand prosperity. Half the Heat roster is either injured or suspended and we crap the bed in the second half. Kudo’s to the Heat and Coach Spoelstra for flat out-playing us.

I don’t like that Mike Brown did not make any kind of “special arrangement” when facing a team that missing their number 1,2,3 players…..

The record already told that we need to make some change regarding this scenario…

I don’t care if we just bench all the starters or start the 3rd sting players to “match up
the situation of the opponents.

Currently, it just sucks……………

Mike Brown take all the accoutability……..

I don’t think Brown or his coaches should shoulder all the accountabillity. The players are the ones playing the game. They know what’s going on. I do though IMO Barnes and Monk should have played more especially when the Kings were fighting back. Just my opinion.

It’s a recurring theme, and he just doesn’t seem able to motivate them, get them fully focused and digging in for these games. Again and again and again.

He also doesn’t seem able to make adjustments and give them a kick in the backside to shift into gear until it is too late.

I hear mainly platitudes and evasive or puzzling answers from Brown after these games. Pretty dissappointing.

I really like the guy, I think he did a hell of a job last year. I have my doubts if he is the type of coach who can take the team to the next level. Too soon to tell now, but the signs don’t look fantastic, IMO.

He often says that the leadership and accountability comes from within, and that the players will get tired of hearing it from him. Lack of respect for the coach that they are probably tuning him out for stretches?

Also, Brown gives the other team credit and rarely mentions that his team didn’t come to play, or the staff didn’t make adjustments, etc. It gets old hearing that, but maybe that is his tactic to not bring stuff out in to the media and instead address it behind closed doors.

Either way, I agree with you. Not sure if Brown is the one that will lead the Kings to the next level. Good floor raiser for a franchise, not a ceiling lifter.

He often says that the leadership and accountability comes from within, and that the players will get tired of hearing it from him.

Huh?

A. This is an indictment of his players.
B. He may be right, but if it doesn’t happen, it is his responsibility to do something about it.
C. How about his leadership and accoutability?
D. If he doesn’t say this because he fears his players will get tired, I wonder what other topics he avoids and maybe his messaging needs work?
E. You can’t shoehorn players. Some players always need the carrot, some the stick, some need to be left alone and others need a balance of things.

I do wonder how much of Browns issues stem from Monte’s poor construction of the team-defensively.

He’s got nothing to work with. And the guys Monte did get to defend can’t shoot. Thus far, this is a hole in Monte’s approach and/or eye.

But I do think/hope Monte is looking to change this. He’d better

This team is consistently inconsistent. It boggles the mind that the Kings can shoot better than their opponent from the field and from three, out rebound their opponent, and even out assist them…yet get totally outplayed by a shallow team and loose by double figures.

Anyone who may fact the Kings in the play-in or playoffs should just rest their stars and game plan for the next round.

Consistently inconsistent LOL!!! I used those exact words to my wife when she asked about the game.

It is so bad their inconsistency is predictable. It’s now to the point where it is not being inconsistent, it is who they are. They have a very high ceiling (LAC, DEN wins) and a very low floor (DET, CHA, MIA losses).

They are the KANGZ OF TRAP GAMES

RIght? How does Len or even McGee not get a minute. I realize that Miami plays small, then fucking counter with something to take them out of their game? The Kings knew the Heat were going to run a swarming zone, because it’s what they always do to the Kings, so make some adjustments!

It was as if Brown just took a knee to Spoelstra’s game plan and didn’t bother to coach.

I don’t often advocate for Javale to get minutes, but las night Lyles and Sabonis had nothing for Bam. Maybe Javale’s length would have changed things a bit. Who knows, and we will not know because Brown just kept using the same failed strategy.

It is not all Brown’s fault. The players made some bad turnovers and looked defeated in the 3rd and early-mid 4th quarter.

Fox and Sabonis bring it every night but the rest of the team is questionable so maybe those two need to start yelling at guys or something lol I know Brown probably is. The Kings don’t have much of an identity so they can’t dictate anything which I do think points to the fact their two stars are not yet fully elite and still learning. Still just a talent issue overall to me, these good teams have actual depth and can sustain missing key players. The Kings have basically no good depth even with all their guys and you never know who will show up and how consistently outside Fox and Domas.
I have one piece of good news though, if the Kings continue on this path towards the 7 or 8 seed we might get the fun of getting to eliminate the Lakers or Warriors in a Play-In game and that would be worth it! They’re probably going to lose in the first round anyway haha.

Defensive Rebounding (and FT’s) down the stretch need to improve. I was impressed with the stops during the run…but they couldn’t get the crucial Defensive Rebound when it mattered most. We saw glimpses of that against LAC as well with 3 possessions in a row (until Fox got the Technical and went on his run).

I just think that when they are scrambling on defense, playing hard, and getting stops…you need to finish with a defensive rebound. At crucial moments, they just didn’t get those 50/50 balls.

This team is an enigma to me and it seems like they always play up or down according to their opponent and the atmosphere.

I really think people don’t look at the big picture completely. The Kings are marginally good.

All of the Nuggets wins are with an asterisk.
Murray has missed all 3 contests, KCP 2 of the contests, Porter 1.

Their win against Minny came without Mcdaniels on the floor.

Clippers were
without George.

They have beat Dallas. But Dallas is now much improved with PJ and Gafford.

Kings were full strength all of these contests.

The only real quality wins were against an OKC team that has no size up front. Chet is too light to handle Sabonis yet. They have addressed that by signing Biyombo. Who typically wrecks Sabonis.

Whether this team is a play in or playoff. They will be out quick.

Huerter and Barnes are liabilities.
Sabonis for all his regular season greatness. Will be exposed again in the playoffs. Can’t spread the floor or rim protect. And more physical players always give him issues.

Well, you’re not wrong. They have issues that were not addressed in the offseason or at the trade deadline. Hopefully that draft pick to Atlanta conveys this season and they can use their future picks and current players to address some holes. I still think they need an upgrade at the SG/SF or PF (depending on where Murray slots in moving forward) positions, and better guard/wing depth.

Where those upgrades come from is beyond me, but hopefully Monte will address them.

Personally, see Keegan’s future as a stretch 3/4, and likely transitioning into a true 4 later in his career. As of today you can pair him with any additional lengthy 3/4 combo wing, sort of like how Denver use Gordon and Porter Jr. in an interchangeable role

Given the weaknesses of the Kings, I think it’d probably make the most sense to get a F who upgrades the defense & rebounding.

It’s interesting how you lay out Kings having just 2 quality wins this season out of 33. However, those aren’t even quality wins, because Chet doesn’t match up well against Sabonis. So technically we have no quality wins.

Does that sound about right?

All of the Nuggets wins are with an asterisk.

Murray has missed all 3 contests

Jamal played 25+ minutes in the 02/09 game here in Sacramento.

That was the SEGABABA game for the Nuggets, right? He looked tired. He tried, but the legs were not there for him.

If I recall correctly, he also said that OG is just a year older than Keegan too.

No asterisk in any win.

Kings are fun, flashy and interesting. They are not consistent, reliable or driven.

basically dating material, not marriage material
