The Kings started their long, six-game road trip tonight with a short travel stop in Los Angeles to face the Lakers. Their last meeting took place a few weeks ago in Sacramento, went to overtime, and ended with a purple beam in the sky. Tonight’s stage was national, and both teams entered on three-game win streaks, with the Lakers on the second night of a back to back. It doesn’t get set much better than that for the 10th game of a Sacramento Kings season. With a bleeding purple heart, I will admit that I am biased, but as a general NBA fan, I would much rather see the team win that will send a luminous beam into the stratosphere. I also recently watched La La Land for the first time and it sucked. Lady Bird was much better. Oh, and also, because F the Lakers, always. Let’s see how it went:
Quick Stats
Outcome: Kings win, 125-110
Sacramento Kings: 125 pts, 50.0% fg, 36.4% 3 pt, 76.5% ft, 31 ast, 45 reb, 15 to
Los Angeles Lakers: 110 pts, 50.6% fg, 37.9% 3 pt, 78.9% ft, 25 ast, 43 reb, 23 to
Using my beam spectrophotometer, I have been able to scientifically prove that the beam shines brighter when the Kings beat the Lakers. And that bad boy is shining bright tonight. Things got a little dicey down the stretch, as the Lakers relied on their oldest player to will them back into this game. LeBron James did his best to carry his team back from a 26-point deficit, leading LA with 28 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds. But it simply was not enough for the barrage of beams coming from Sacramento.
The Good, The Better, & The Best
The Good:
- Perfect Start: Like he did in the game before, De’Aaron Fox started the game by immediately attacking the paint, and ended up scoring an and one before 3 seconds even had the chance to tick off the clock. From there, the Beam Team followed suit. The Kings showed solid execution on both ends of the floor and earned themselves an early 10-point lead. Team defense on one end, where help side was consistent and rebounds were prioritized, led to consistent displays of the high efficiency offense that earned them this spot on national television. The Kings finished the first quarter with a 13-point lead, 9 assists, and 6 made 3-pointers. It was the perfect way to start the game.
- Keegan Murray’s Defense: I’m going to need one of my much better fellow writers at The Kings Herald to do a deep dive on the development of Keegan Murray’s defense so far this year. For now, you just get me, and in my not so fancy writing style: it is incredible. Tonight, Murray started out on D’Angelo Russell and held him to just 4 points in the first quarter. There were numerous times where Murray used his length and strength to recover on defense whenever Russell’s speed got a step on him. Murray was able to remain connected to Russell, recover his body in front of him, and contest his shots. He also spent some time on this other big guy, you might have heard of him before, named LeBron James, where he showcased his added muscle from the offseason by guarding with his body and not backing down. Murray also snagged 6 rebounds, something that has become a new consistent habit for him this season.
The Better:
- Shining All Stars: If there were any doubts about the Kings’ two All Stars before, they were aggressively quieted tonight by the play of De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. Fox spent the majority of the game getting to the paint whenever he wanted, and when that got too easy for him, he also hit 3 triples to add to his total of 28 points. Sabonis earned a double double before the end of the first half, and ultimately finished with 29 points, 16 rebounds, and 7 assists. The skillsets of this duo were endlessly complementary tonight. Where Fox got to the rim at will, Sabonis created open looks for teammates with every handoff screen he set. When the national lights were spotlighted on them in the brightest arena in the league, they shone brighter.
- No Voicemails: There have been too many times to count where we have seen the Kings of the past give up a 26-point lead to end in defeat. Not the Beam Team, though. The Kings left nothing unanswered tonight. Anytime the Lakers got on a run, the Kings responded with their own to keep them at bay. Whether it was a Fox floater or one of Kevin Huerter’s 10 made field goals, the Kings always found a way to quiet the Crypt and hold a comfortable lead all night long.
The Best:
- Lakers Lose: No matter the day, no matter the time, no matter where the game is broadcasted, it is ALWAYS a good day when the Lakers lose. The fact that it was to the Sacramento Kings on national television? *Chef’s kiss*
The King of Kings
Ladies and gentlemen, Killa K has arrived. If K’Von is the evolution of Kevin Huerter, then Killa K is his fully evolved version. He is BACK back. After warming up in the last game, Huerter went up in flames tonight. He looked like he was playing at a different speed, coming off curl screen handoffs like his life depended on it, and made impeccable decisions all night. His stat line: 28 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds, 6-11 from the 3-point line, and ZERO turnovers. In what became a sloppy game at times, Huerter was the anchor for the Kings. After hitting 6 3-pointers through the first three quarters, he spent the fourth creating plays off the dribble and hitting two huge jumpers to seal the game. Killa K hates the Lakers and so I love Killa K.

Which fan base is worse, Lakers or Warriors?
Lakers. in my opinion
Used to be Lakers, now Warriors.
yes, used to be fakers, now the duds fans are the worst
Agreed. I see many of them saying Gobert should have been suspended too. For aggressively throwing his hands up in surrender, I guess?
4 in a row!

Perfect.
Well definitely need/use this gif for the many sweeps during this year’s championship run.
That game was a joy to watch from start to finish. While I wanted a blowout, I did get a schadenfreude-induced high from switching to the Lakers radio feed during the last half of the fourth quarter.
Hearing their crazed hopes get dashed was like listening to a comedy show.
Beating the Lakers, Dubs lost four in a row, Clippers falling…doesn’t get much better than that!
. . . And the Kings now have sole possession of first place.
That was literally a blowout. Politics are a thing.
Happy with Huerter as King of Kings, but Domas dominated Davis in a showdown of two top centers (behind Joker and Embiid).
Davis is hurt… tired or done pick your 750,000 dollar a game winner or loser. LeBron did
I think it was the pace tonight, Davis was gassed by the end of the 1st Q. It looked like Ham was gonna keep him in as long as Brown kept Domas in, but Domas is in much better shape.
Honestly any of Huerter, Sabonis or Fox could have been named King of Kings for this game and it would have been justifiable.
What a fun game! Domas absolutely manhandled AD. 20 steals!
Aggressive Domas is back. Hoping he continues this tear.
This team will only get better w Lyles Back. Anyone know how long?.
He puts this team over the top. Great fit.

According to sources, Kings forward Trey Lyles has been cleared to resume basketball activities after undergoing a re-evaluation of his left calf strain. He is working through the reconditioning process and his return to play will be based on his progression.
-Sean Cunningham on twitter
“Basketball activities” is a large umbrella term that also includes “watching basketball.”
I too, have been cleared, and am in the best shape of my life, not counting most of it.
I think it’s gonna be Sasha or Lyles splitting the playing time….
McGee will retain as 2nd unit because of his size….
I’d guess McGee is going to get considerable burn as Sacramento tries to contain Wemby. He and Sabonis will be able to muscle him around, but his length keeps him in position to make defensive plays.
That kid is something else entirely.
Thank you Mirann. These after game episodes are…. Sequenced. Thank you so much for the spectrophotometer,
It’s true! La La Land is bad, and Lady Bird is good!
While a lot of people here hate on LeBron I firmly believe he’s in the GOAT conversation. He played well today, but how the Kings dealt with his excellence then played their team game was good.
Also, having Sabonis and not AD… SO GOOD
Great game to watch and especially getting the win against the Fakers on ESPN . Really enjoyed the broadcast with Doc Rivers and Dave Pasch .
yes, I listened to parts of that apologetic whine
DANCE!

We’re going streaking!
Seriously, what’s better than Light The Beam chants in LA on national TV?
PLAY of the day….
What a steal by Barnes…………????
p.s. I think Barnes played really well this game…defends really well against James…
But a bit surprised that he was the one who guard James for most game…as I thougth Mike Brown should put Keegan on James because Keegan was guarding those best player on opposing team…
Barnes was actually guarding AD much of the night which is even more impressive. He kept him out of the paint. Brilliant coaching.
Barnes was great in his complimentary role today. One of the better defensive games I’ve seen him play. My only problem/concern with putting Spock on Lebron is that he’d likely get in foul trouble.
something else on Spock, his deep shooting was pretty horrible last night but yet… he had a great game doing all the other things you need from him very very well. I’m impressed.
I’d love to see LAL, LaC, GSW and PHX not make the playoffs. You can just feel the changing of the guard going on in the NBA. Time for LBJ, Steph, KD, Beard and Leonard to head to the old folks home and let the young guns take over the NBA.
Tired of all of them. Think they are bigger than the game.
Exactly. Steph seems humble but the rest of the lot need to be phased out, especially beard.
I get a bit of a fake-humble vibe from Steph.
I’m fine though with Lebron playing till he’s 50.
Humble or not, it’s Steph’s flopping and falling to the floor on every shot that have made him unlikable for me.
If Lebron went away forever, and I never heard from or about him again, I would be happy.
yes, fake humble. If you are humble you don’t do a night/night thing or point to the sky or pull on your jersey or mock opponents.
Bleep him.
When he was young, Steph was cool. Now his antics are just obnoxious. De’Aaron, in contrast, just goes about his business. Plus he has Recee and Reign. Easy to like.
stephie is fake humble- his innocent demeanor belies an a…hole
What made this win taste a little sweeter, was that the Lakers thought that they had a chance when they cut it to 9. 16 years of PTKangzD had me sweat in the pits a bit but this Beam Team said “No No No!” and swatted their comeback attempt like my wife when I try to put Fruity Pebbles in the shopping cart.
Lol Cocoa Puffs for me but same bro. Same.
mine is more ice cream
Did the kings just lead wire to wire for the second straight game?
Who knew dominating the Lakers for an entire game would be so boring. Where am I? ????
This season is only going to get better.
Sabonis dominates, Fox was twice as fast as anyone out there, Huerter with the hot hand, and Keegan with the stellar defense. Can’t ask for much more than that. It seriously felt like the Kings were toying with the Lakers at times, and boy did AD look disengaged at times.
Davion watch: That’s another DNP/CD. I wonder if Brown is trying to make him earn it in practice.
Keon’s length/size may be outweighing Davion’s on-ball physicality, and Davion isn’t a good enough facilitator to compensate for it.
I think this has a lot to do with it.
It also appears to me that the offense does’t seem to skip a beat when Keon is in, but definitely stagnates when Davion is in.
Yep. The eye test and the numbers align here.
Well that settles it, Davion is getting traded sooner rather than later. If the Bulls decides to blow it up, Caruso would be a great get for us.
I would rather have Williams. We need a defensive PW who can shoot the 3 before we need another guard. Ellis is capable especially on the defensive side to backup Fox. Also this would let Murray play the 3 where IMO this is wherehe belongs.
If push comes to shove Jones can play PG. Look what he did in Stockton the other night.
I think when Lyles returns that will solidify the rotation and roles. He is the backup PF and occasional Center that the teams could use. Being able to have a lineup something like Foz/Huerter/Murray/Sasha/Lyles could be quite the potent one. Just adds more options to a dangerous team.
Trader Jack ! at it again with that Williams thing. Caruso- the ghost- was all NBA defense last year. Not sure how he does that but I would take him
Nothing wrong with Williams. Check out some of his highlights.
Inserting Caruso for Davion would be a huge boon for our chances in the playoffs. Monte really needs to add a legit defender with size to this roster.
That stat alone is enough to get you benched!
I find the notion that Davion Mitchell, who at times has needed to be locked out of the gym, isn’t busting his ass at practice, to be quite silly.
That’s not how I read the comment. Sure Davion busts his ass, that is generally known about him. Is he doing in practice what the coaches want him to do in his role? Effectively running plays, improving at team defense, etc.
That’s exactly what I meant. Plus, if earning playing time was all about busting ass, then Omri Casspi would have been a ten year starter in the league, but alas…
Michael the Animal Smith would like a word.
Fox- for two games in a row has stolen the opening tip and got a layup
With all of the highlights the Kings made last night…..the only play from the game to make NBA top 10 plays was a LeBron block. Fox’s start to the game, the Domas dunk and many more. But no, LeBron got a block. Cool.
Sounds about right. SMH
That said, Legler did a good piece on the Kings on ESPN right after the game and was very complimentary.
He broke it down well. The broadcast crew kept it very surface level during the game. I was not a fan of Doc and the other guy. Lots of talk that didn’t really have much to do with the plays of the game.
other guy= Dave Pasch- the pure vanilla of announcers
Arman Legler?
We’re watching Fox’s ascendancy to a top 10 player in the league. He’s picking teams apart right now and his ability to create his own shot is off the hook. The guy is a pure joy to watch. I didn’t see it coming that even his defense is really starting to look top notch.
I was just reading a re-grade of the 2017 draft written (or at least updated) this past summer with Fox falling behind Tatum, Donovan Mitchell, and Adebayo. That’s just criminal. I think any re-grades in the future will have him in the top two, if not passing Tatum for #1.
The other three have accomplished much more with playoff runs so I get the bias, but Fox is clearly better than Spida and Bam at the least. I’m not the biggest Tatum fan so I’d probably even take Fox over him.
Agreed, if Fox is going to take that next step, he’s definitely going to get deeper into the playoffs than the first round. Based on the defense I’m seeing from the entire team, I believe the Kings can beat any team when they’re on. Would they likely beat the Nuggets? Dunno, but I think they’re capable of it.
Anyone else feel that the number of games we’ve had against the Warriors dating back to the postseason has sharpened this team? The movement off the ball, the intensity, the pace… I watch us play these non-Warrior teams and I’m like, “man, the Warriors are an amazing team but also they made us way better.”
That’s possible, but it’s like the whole team has finally caught on to Coach’s defensive culture. The improvement from one year to the next is remarkable. And with it our offense is also getting better. Imagine great offense and great defense at the same time. That’s a recipe for success.
I watch other teams and the play style is generally boring. Nice to have a fun offense in Sacramento where you know almost anyone can get hot and score.
Heliocentric offenses, like that chubby euro player in Dallas has, are just boring.
I believe it. The Pacific Division ain’t no joke and it makes us better.
Let’s not use “Killa K.” The words are violent.
Like his shot!
You should have been here when people were using “Serbian Sniper.” It’s violent on its own, but given that actual Serbian snipers had killed thousands in Kosovo in the fairly recent past, it was pretty distasteful.
Mirann- great post
LA LA Land did suck and Lady Bird was great. Except for a slight flutter early in 4th, Kings were very good..
Lots of guys on this team can take turns lighting it up. The beam looks great from my backyard
I just love beating the Lakers. My wife is from Kenya and I catch myself often explaining to her why “we” dislike the Lakers. During our drought, even though we were only going to be a 20 win team. As long as one of those wins were against the Lakers.. I was happy.
With our latest addition to the family, I haven’t had the chance to see the beam. Which is unfortunate because I live in Antelope.. not somewhere far off. One day. But for now.. I hope we get the privilege of knocking a healthy Lakers out of the Playoffs. I hope it’s in the Western Conference Finals on their own home court and they have confetti and hats and tshirts already made. I want the fans walking up the stands with 3 minutes remaining in the 4th. Chants of “light the beam” coming from the 3000 kings fans throughout the arena. That is my dream.
Good night y’all!
