The 6th Man Report: There’s madness in March for the Western Conferece

It's weird to talk about having home court advantage, but the Kings are in prime position to secure a top four seed. A chaotic Western Conference could help -- or hurt -- their cause.
By | 48 Comments | Mar 7, 2023

Everybody has something they are dealing with when the calendar turns to March in the NBA.

It’s a damn long season, and the minutes that have been adding up all season begin to really take their toll when spring gets on the horizon.

Normally, the Kings are playing out the string by this point; even last year, when there were play-in scenarios swirling, the team had won just 24 games by March 5 and were in the beginnings of a four game losing streak.

That’s different a year later; not only are fans keeping track of the magic number, they’re running through seeding scenarios with confidence.

Currently first in the Pacific Division and third in the Western Conference, the Kings are just nine wins away from securing a playoff spot and 14 from hosting a first round series, statistics that were patently unfathomable just a couple months back.

It won’t be easy holding off the teams below them; the Suns are just 2.5 games back of third place and look to be on another level since Kevin Durant was activated to the roster. The superstar has scored 80 points in his first three games on 69% shooting and the Suns have yet to lose with him on the court.

But it isn’t just Phoenix hot on the tail of Sacramento: four teams are within five games of third place and 10 are eight games or less back in the loss column.

The teams Sacramento are chasing — Denver and Memphis — haven’t locked anything up yet either, though Denver does currently hold a seven game lock on the No. 1 seed. The Grizzlies will be without star Ja Morant for at least a couple games as he deals with off-the-court issues in light of recent lawsuits and social media behavior.

We certainly want the best for Morant, but no one will feel sorry for the Grizzlies’ hold on the No. 2 seed being vulnerable in the meantime. With how tightly the West is bunched, one bad week could elevate a team out of the play-in — or drop them right back into it.

Coming into the season, just about any long-suffering Kings fan would have been ecstatic to be in the play-in, but let’s be honest: we’ve gotten greedy. Finishing as the 7 or 8 seed would feel a little bit like a disappointment, though I don’t think anyone is entitled to the point of not being happy to be in the postseason, period, after such a long absence.

Finishing in the top six of this particular version of the Western Conference would be a huge deal for a young team; hosting a first round series could be franchise-changing.

The stretch run won’t be easy for a team with a lot of guys who haven’t been in one previously; every game matters at this point, and to be extra cliche, there are no nights off.

Games like Saturday’s loss to Minnesota hurt, especially on your home floor. Let downs are to be expected, but you hope that one bad game doesn’t turn into one bad week. That’s the challenge for Mike Brown, but he certainly knows how to handle winning time. Veterans like Harrison Barnes help as well, as does Matthew Dellavedova — who seems to have been brought in as much for what he can provide experience-wise off the court as anything he brings on it at this point in his career.

All of this to say: this is fun, isn’t it? There are beams to be lit, numbers to be crunched, and teeth to be gritted over the next month. But at the end of the day, it’s far more enjoyable to be stressed out over every minute of game time than to spend them analyzing college players and trolling mock draft sites.

The Kings matter. They’re fun, they’re good, and they’re legit.

Time to buckle up and enjoy it.

Crown Him:

You’ve got to give this one to Mike Brown, who has been pushing the right buttons the entire season.

Brown became the first Sacramento Kings coach since 2004 to earn Coach of the Month honors after guiding his team to an 8-4 record in February and a four game win streak out of the All Star break.

Though the hire wasn’t flashy or all that exciting by the reaction of NBA folks initially, there’s zero argument now that his steadying presence, basketball acumen, and culture building have been an absolute game-changer.

Not only does he have the team on the verge of ending its 16-year playoff drought, they might have home court advantage through the first round.

Brown has seen just about everything in his 23-year NBA coaching career, a journey that has had him learning under some of the greats like Gregg Popovich, Rick Carlisle, and Steve Kerr. He’s earned the trust of his team not just with his own acumen, but by building a staff of assistants that can not only coach and develop, but are builders off the court, too.

I won’t say I was a doubter when he was hired, but I certainly didn’t expect THIS to be the result. I have a feeling I am not alone.

Up Next:

The Kings host the Knicks Thursday before traveling to Phoenix to take on Kevin Durant and the Suns in a pivotal Western Conference matchup. Phoenix has been on an absolute heater since Durant was activated, with the superstar averaging 1.9 points per shot, and absolutely obscene statistic.

This isn’t just a big game for seeding purposes, but a measuring stick opportunity for the young Kings against a true title contender.

SacTown’s Finest:

We are a ways out from St. Patrick’s Day, but before you fill up on corned beef and green beer, get a run in.

Shamrock’n Weekend is this coming weekend, featuring a Leprechaun Dash, 5K, 10K, and half-marathon options. All proceeds from the event benefit Sacramento-based Triumph Cancer Foundation.

The event is more about the ambiance than your finish time, and you can expect plenty of folks in costumes, walking, enjoying the live music, or a combination of all three. And after you finish, there’s plenty of post-race food and beverages to enjoy.

bbref currently has the playoff seeding as Den, Mem, Sac, Phx, GS, Dal, Min, NO, LAC, OKC. 538 has it Den, Mem, Sac/Phx, GS/Dal/Min, LAC, LAL, NO. I don’t know if either of these rankings has done much adjusting for Morant, as his availability remains a bit of a mystery.

Kudos to any of you that had the preseason thought that 1st round home court advantage would be a topic of conversation.

I had us at 41-43 wins pre season and I am ecstatic that we may end up around 45-47/8 wins with a chance to get first round home court. Love this and it’s fun! I do fear we could see a 3-4 game losing streak in the next week. I’m thinking the Knicks are our best chance in the next 3 to get a win and they are smoking hot right now

this team is fun and so likeable… they are all likeable and easy to cheer for!

also sad about Morant; we seem to have a whole generation that don’t seem to understand that guns have 1 real purpose and it’s intended to kill… I do not want to get into a political discussion about gun control because I am a gun owner. A gun owner that understand the responsibility that comes with it. We seem to have a generation that do not understand it and think it’s cool and that brandishing it is the way to squelch beefs and show power; but that is when stuff goes sideways. The young man has the world at his fingertips and I pray he gets help/education he needs so he can become a role model….

sorry if I went too far away from sports and feel free to erase my comments if it causes issues. Not my intention

We are the 2nd place team in the west. Teams we are playing this week should view games against us as a scheduled loss. We are just not used to this winning thing and may still have a case of imposter syndrome.

The best thing you Kings can do now is knuckle down and play defense. If you do that and stay healthy the sky is the limit. DFENSE!!! GO KINGS!!!

I expected at best maybe competing for a play-in spot before the season started. When they started 0-4, I already was setting myself the expectation that this was probably going to be another losing season. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that not only would we actually be in in the playoff hunt, let alone also having a chance of getting home court advantage in the first round.

I had gone many times throughout the years where the Kings would go on a five game winning streak, I would think that the team was turning it around, only for them to lose the next eight of nine games. After the 2015-16 season, I adapted a “show me, don’t tell me” attitude towards the Kings; show me consistent, long term, good play, and I will get excited and think the team has turned the corner. I only had that “turning the corner” feeling twice in the past 16 seasons; the 9-5 start in 2014-15 (before Michael Malone got canned), and most of the 2018-19 season in Dave Joerger’s final year. Both of these times the organization pulled the rug from under the feet and made a terrible move that we wouldn’t recover from.

I’m repeating myself from the last thread, but this year, the team has finally fulfilled the “show, don’t tell” that I have been looking for; good, consistent basketball. Other than the first four games, the team has not let a one or two game loss spiral out of control, and even games that look like they are over, they still go out and compete (and sometimes win). It really is hard to put into words how surprising this season has been, and how much I’ve been invested in watching games/rooting for the players and coaching staff. Kudos to the transactions of the front office, the coaches getting the team to buy-in, and the players playing hard.

Is the roster 100 percent perfect? Not by any means. But I’m definitely enjoying the ride that is the 2022-23 Sacramento Kings season. Let’s hope this consistency stays for the remaining 18 games of the season and we can finally put an end to the 16 year playoff drought.

Hell, if the rumored 50 game suspension for carrying a firearm on a team flight comes about…he cost his team the playoffs. They are just 8 games from the 11th seed and have just begun to spiral.

I’m not 100% sure of the truth to it, but I saw a few times on the twitter sphere about a black and white league rule. I imagine it would be hard to prove if it his gun. I’d also imagine one of his entourage would take the fall if need be.

Not sure it matters if it was his gun or not. He was holding it. I want to know how it got there. On the team plane, or did his flunky entourage drive to Denver to give it to him? Has to be one or the other. Can’t bring a gun on a commercial flight. I don’t feel sorry for him. My son is the same age. If he did the same, he’d be in a lot more trouble. Dude has the potential to earn half a billion dollars or more playing a kids game, name recognition and status, a shoe and drink deals, world class health and fitness options. Add on the other “alleged” incidents and you’ve got a pattern. He should be elevating people around him, not playing with guns in nightclubs at 5:20 in the morning. Not sure why the teams don’t do a better job of preventing this sort of thing. Hire a $75,000/year bodyguard to keep an eye on the younger guys. How much revenue will the Grizzlies and league lose because of this dumb act? I hope for his sake that this will be the event that will turn him around to be the best person he can be.

We’re currently only a half game back of the Grizz who seem to be imploding and who knows how long Ja ends up being away from the team.
I think the Suns if they stay healthy nab the 2nd seed and we end up staying at 3 with the Grizz dropping out of the top 4. Regretablly I see the Warriors getting the 4th seed which would be huge for them considering how bad of a road team they are.

Can’t argue with that.. I think the Kings could get to 47 wins which means that Minny or GS need to go 14-2 and 14-3 to suprass the kings if they can win 9 of their last 18

Morant’s gonna be out awhile me thinks. Possible criminal charges and certainly an nba suspension. He took a gun on a team plane. We’ve got a pretty legit chance to pass them. Phoenix is a bigger concern at this point.

I think that Phx is the #1 or #2 team in the West right now. They still have a challenge, and that is how to get the most out of CP3, Booker and Durant as a trio, while also keeping Ayton engaged. Durant is an exponentially larger presence than Mikal Bridges (and Cam Johnson), but the is a knife that can cut both ways. Denver, meanwhile, has continuity and (for a change) health. After those two teams, there are as many as six teams that could make some noise if (a) things come together for them and (b) Den or Phx suffer an crucial injury.

Apparently Marc Stein has walked back the 50 games thing he said this morning. It’s “commissioner’s discretion”.

It would still be a massive suspension

It is a violation of federal law and potentially some state laws if he did not properly declare, lock and store it. I’m pretty sure that Delta (who I believe is the official charter airline) will have significant issue with it as well.

I believe it could come with up to 12 years in prison and 100k fine and falls under

To hell with the Grizzlies. When you put your franchise on the back of a dipshit, dipshitty things will ensue.

Besides, they can win without Morant, they’ve done it the past two seasons. Steven Adams is the line between contending and being a joke, and it’s clearly borne out in Memphis’ record since he was injured.

And congrats to Nike, who jumped from Kyrie Irving to Morant as the face of their basketball line. Just Wave a Gun Around™.

Home court advantage; extatic
5th-6th seed; happy
Pay-offs after the play-in; okay with it
Play-in and out; disappointed.*

*If you squander the second seed so late in the season only to stumble and fall flat on your face and fall when the rest of the conference is geting healthy and serious, it’s a huge letdown and will absolutely spoil an otherwise great season.

Public Service Reminder: On 12/23 Domantas Sabonis suffered a fracture to his right thumb. Initial estimates were that he would miss six weeks, roughly 20 games. Sabonis missed the first game after the injury, which the Kings lost. He returned to play in 18 of the next 19 games, with the Kings going 11-7 in those 18 games (they won the game that he sat). Sabonis averaged 20.2 / 12.4 / 7.6 during this period.

It is difficult to determine how many wins Sabonis was worth during this period, a period where the Kings would have backfilled with a little more Lyles, a little more Metu, and more Holmes and/or Len. The Kings won an OT game during this period, two games by 1 pt., one game by 2 pts., and two games by 5 pts. By my estimation, Sabonis was worth at least 4-6 wins during this period, so let’s split the difference and say 5. That would place the Kings at 33-31, which would be an amazing record with Sabonis out six weeks, and they would be right on the cusp of the playoff / play-in line.

In a day and age of load management, Domantas Sabonis’ decision to play through a fractured thumb – and play at a level that garnered an all-star acknowledgement – has been one of the most amazing (and under-publicized) stories of this season.

Thank you, Domas!
