DeMar DeRozan’s time with the Sacramento Kings could end with him being waived, according a report.
HoopsHype reports that the Kings plan to use the waive-and-stretch method to move off of DeRozan’s contract if a trade doesn’t materialize.
“In the midst of a rebuild and over the first apron, barring an unexpected trade, the Sacramento Kings are expected to waive-and-stretch forward DeMar DeRozan, HoopsHype has learned. DeRozan’s $25.74 million expiring contract is only guaranteed for $10 million, which can be stretched over the next three seasons. Should DeRozan enter free agency as expected, the Los Angeles Clippers are expected to have interest in the California native, HoopsHype has learned.”
So essentially, Sacramento would open a roster spot and reduce its immediate salary cap hit by waiving DeMar DeRozan, then spread the $10 million guaranteed portion of his contract over three years instead of absorbing it all next season.
DeRozan averaged 18.4 points, 4.1 assists and 2.9 rebounds in 31 minutes per game last season.
With Darius Acuff Jr. in the building, it is time for the Kings to clear the floor of the veterans and let the kid ball.

If the Clips are so interested hopefully, Perry can get a trade done instead of waiving him.
I don’t think Perry wants to take back any salary. They just want the roster spot and the contract gone. It’s a small amount when stretched.
Let some team sign him and try to incorporate the ball stopping on their team.
I was thinking a pick but it’d be hard to get a 2nd rounder when its been reported we’ll just waive him.
That’s bad asset management when you can save a team 15 mil which is worth at minimum one second, likely two
But you have to take on roughly equal salary to make that happen, so now you’re paying $25 million in salary plus a tax penalty for a couple second round picks.
Just more reason why the Dennis signing and trade for Hunter were all bad moves.
I agree.
I keep going back to Denver. They are already an apron team team and are about to have Payton Watson hit RFA, whom they really want to keep. They desperately need to shed salary and trading for DDR to cut and stretch him could save them a ton.
Cam Johnson, Strawther, and future draft capital (it works at Fanspo trade engine) gets them out of $27.8M and then they can cut ant stretch DDR down to $3.3M. That saves Denver $24M! That’s worth some draft capital coming the Kings way as a thank you.
Of course this doesn’t help the Kings cap situation, but Cam Johnson is a very tradable contract and player. He’s also expiring. I would think they could flip him and and save money in other ways. Move him or Hunter for some smaller contacts. Wittle down the cap in other ways.
I like the way you think.
I gotta think he’s worth 1-2 future second rounders. Even if it’s 5-6 years down the road.
Now let Keegan be the SF/Wing he is supposed to be, not the front court player.
Hunter, Precious, Max, Domas can be the front court guys.
Next is to get rid of Lavine (highly unlikely), and let Nique be the other starting guard/wing.
Acuff, Nique, Keegan, Hunter, Sabonis. Get some reps with those guys and see what how it looks. It will provide some good data on how to build this roster moving forward.
Not disagreeing with the lineup choice: but if you want Keegan at the 3 (as I also think he should be), then you have a 6’7 221 Hunter as your Power Forward vs Keegan’s 6’8 225.
I think it’s largely position-less basketball these days. They also have Precious who is 6’8″ but weighs 240 or so, and he can pitch in at the 4. Hunter is supposed to be a good defender and can guard multiple positions and so can Keegan. Playing them at the same time represents the only real defense the Kings have unless Karaban has anything to offer.
Precious is a UFA.
Yes, but just thinking if they were going to bring him back assuming money is available.
One question I have for you is, do luxury tax fines go against the salary at the end of the season, or the beginning? I ask this because if it’s at the end of the season, can the Kings do a trade deadline deal for Levine, thereby putting them below the first (or second) apron?
At the end, which is why if they get a toe or two over the tax line this summer, it really isn’t that big of a deal if they can rectify it by the deadline.
Hunter has said he would be alright if he came off the bench. He only has this year then FA. What about Achuiwa at the 4 instead?
I think it would be to see how Keegan does in that role. Hunter is just the current guy for this to happen.
They do need a bigger forward, but they haven’t add that person at this point.
In doing some rough math, if I’m not mistaken, adding the #7 and #29 guaranteed money ($8m and $3M) adds $11M to the cap, in which the Kings were already $4M over the tax line, makes them now $15M over the tax BEFORE waiving and stretching DDR
Just waiving DDR and shedding $15M still puts the Kings right around the tax line, but by stretching his $10M guaranteed to $3.3M over three years, it ensures the Kings are below the tax threshold to start to the NBA calendar year.
Why does this matter? It gets them use of the full non-tax payer MLE and BAE to use in free agency. They wouldn’t have had those options to begin the offseason with DDR still there.
Wouldn’t they be right back into the luxury tax if they use those options?
Perhaps, but I think by stretching DDR and (I assume) cutting Hayes, gets them over $20M below the tax before the cap holds of the rookies add $11M. That’s roughly $9M below the tax to play with. More importantly they are clear of the first apron with ease and get the “perks” that come with it.
It definitely gives them more wiggle room. Are they gonna use it wisely? I have my doubts. I still see them filling out the roster with vet minimums to try and stay below or as close to the tax line as possible. They could always go into the tax and stay below the first apron then try and get back below the tax line before the trade deadline.
The truth is, if they do nothing before the end of the month, they will be an apron team which really cripples them going into free agency. Removing DDR (or someone else) is almost a necessity.
Nicely explained, sir. I wasn’t clear on how far below the tax cutting DDR and Hayes got them. Good stuff there. Let’s hope the Kings front office has the same understanding you do.
My first choice would be to take the cap hit this year and be done with contract.
But if it makes a difference between paying or not paying the cap tax than I understand why they would stretch to three years.
$3.3M per year for 3 years is really nothing. That’s basically a vet minimum deal.
You also have expiring contracts on Eubanks, McDermott, Westbrook. That’s 10 mil there.
They are already off the books. Kings are over the tax with them already gone.
DDR is (and was) the wrong player for this team at this time.
Question? Would you trade Sabonis to the Hornets for Bridges, Green and one of 3 2027 first rounders. I prefer the Dalles first rounder. Miles worth 25 mil on expiring contract and Green at 16mil. Might keep Green as a backup to Clifford if we don’t get Ryan Conwell with the #45. What say you?
If I can immediately flip Bridges for Kuzma (also an expiring), sure. They’re both knuckleheads, but Kuzma’s not a wife beater. Seeing Bridges in a Kings uniform would be infuriating for me.
This. 100%.
Hard no on Bridges. The Kings have already had something like half of the NBA’s domestic abusers on their team over the last decade. Bridges seems like the worst of the bunch. Let’s not collect any more of them, thanks.
I like this move because Keegan can move to the 3, his natural position.
If you have to eat a turd, don’t chew it on the way down.
I understand the added MLE and BAE flexibility in stretching DDR, but this team is not going to be relevant this year. Just eat the $10m this year and move on. I’m not going to lose my shit over a waive/stretch, but I think that it would be dumb given where the team is right now.
Better than packaging him with an unprotected 1st and 2 unprotected pick swaps for cap space
This. You’re not getting a young difference maker with the MLE. You’re getting Malik Monk or Dennis Schroder, not withstanding what the Kings actually paid those guys.
