This week, Zach Lowe and Bill Simmons discussed some Kings-centric trades. If you’re unfamiliar with the proposals, Lowe talked about the Kings sending Richaun Holmes, Nemanja Bjelica, the 12th pick, and a top-5 protected 2021 first rounder to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for the 2nd overall pick in the draft, while Simmons countered with Buddy Hield and the 12th pick to Golden State for Andrew Wiggins and the second pick.
Those ideas have inspired us to demand our own trades. No, not like Buddy Hield will inevitably do in a few months when he comes off the bench again because he refuses to play defense, but more in the vein of your own trade ideas to help the Kings. The proposals can help the Kings win now, they can reset the roster around De’Aaron Fox and get the core much younger and cheaper, or they can even involve a blow-up in which the franchise enters its 49th rebuild in the last dozen years or so. And while we want you to have the freedom to toss about any mad idea that comes to fruition in your mind, we do need a couple of guidelines:
- You must include a screenshot or a link to the approved trade from a trade website. Although the ESPN Trade Machine is a popular tool, TradeNBA may be even more helpful, as it allows you to sign-and-trade players like Bogdan Bogdanovic, as well as being able to include picks owned by a particular team.
- The trade must be realistic. We’re not dealing for LeBron James or Kevin Durant. Also, no trades with more than three teams or more than nine players. Those things just don’t really happen.
- If you’re including salary filler or picks, please specify which players will be involved or which draft assets. “Buddy to Dallas for salary and a first rounder” isn’t gonna fly. The good news is Trade NBA does show you a list of all of the picks any team owns, so those should be easy to include.

I think the Holmes, Bjelica, 2021 1st for the number 2 is probably fair, but I don’t like it since in general, I don’t think a perennial lottery team should be trading away future 1sts in a good draft. In the end I’d counter for a lottery protected pick, and settle for top 10 protections.
I think this is probably a “plan B” for GS though. I’d imagine their first preference is packaging Wiggins and the 2 together to get a better player than Holmes.
With that Wiggins deal down to two years, I think there’s a chance they could get more value. I’d be down for the Wiggins + 2 for Buddy and the 12, I think.

Adding… with the #6 the Kings can hopefully get Haliburton or Hayes. Kings now have a backcourt rotation of Fox, Huerter, and Haliburton/Hayes.
Buddy and the #12 to Orlando for Gordon and #15. Kings save a bit of cash and select Jalen Smith at #15. Magic get a SG with Fournier leaving as a UFA.
Kings sell off Nemaja and Holmes and go all in on the three headed frontcourt rotation court of Bagley, Gordon, and Smith. Tank it up for 2021 draft.
I’m fine with the trade, as I think it’s basically Buddy for Gordon. Though I think that ends up meaning Bagley is traded at some point. I don’t see them working together. But man, Jalen Smith at 15 is rough for me. I really don’t think he’s going to be a positive defender in the NBA. I think he probably maxes out as a 10-15 minute match-up stretch big.
I just picked Smith because he is projected to be around there and it’s a swing for upside. Other players I’d hope to be there and pick before Smith include Poku, Williams, Bey, Green, ad Nesmith, but I suspect most to be gone by then.
Maybe. Obviously, the bit upside swing there is Poku. Sidenote: we’re going to see a run over Poku’s (rail thin 7-ft bailhandler/shooters) over the next few years with Poku, Chet Holmgren, and Victor Wembanyana. The later two are likely top 5 guys though.
Bjelica plus a 2nd rounder to get another 1st round pick (assuming a player is available that the team really wants).
I think the Kings can do better with Bjelica’s deal since it’s non guaranteed.
What if it’s the #52 pick plus Bjelica for a 1st rounder?
This is what I would consider a Godfather offer for Fox:
Fox, Bjelly, Parker to NYK for Robinson, Ntilikina, Portis, 2020 #8 pick, and 2021 NYK 1st.
Yup, and that is one I’d seriously consider if McNair does not think Fox is the long term plan.

Sorry, just saw this. The short story is it’s a series of trades for good, overpaid vest on short-ish deals that would bring picks along with them.
Guys like Porter, Batum (okay, good-ish), Prince, yes, Horford, etc.

I think the Stepien rule doesn’t apply, since the Knicks also have the Clippers 1st this year. Plus I believe they have 3 first rounders in 2021.
Rockets get: Harrison Barnes, Richaun Holmes, Cory Joseph, 2021 Kings 1st Round Pick Top 8 Protected
Kings get: Russell Westbrook
Mcnair gets his splash and 2 ball handlers surrounded by shooters in keeping Hield and Bogi. Rockets get out of that terrible Westbrook contract with some viable pieces to build an actual team around Harden. Could probably switch Joseph with Bjelly if you want. Gives the Rockets some smaller, moveable contracts that are also good team players around Harden. Also the pick will intrigue them.
With the pick protected, Kings really aren’t giving up too much. As much as I love Holmes…I don’t see him or Barnes as part of the future plans.
The title did ask for terrible trade ideas, and I am interested to hear people’s thoughts. Westbrook plays losing basketball but sure is fun to watch and imagine him with Fox, Hield, Bogi, Len, and hopefully a healthy Bagley.
Maybe someone can clarify if McNair can make any trades with his former employer… or is there a moratorium (one year I believe)?
Even though man, I hesitate to even make this trade without the pick. Definitely not giving up the pick to take on what might be one of the worst deals in the NBA.
Oh, please no. Westbrook is only fun to watch for me when he’s on someone else’s team. I certainly wouldn’t give up any positive assets to get him. IMO, his value is pretty severely negative.
Any trade not involving a good stats can’t win guy, so no Wiggins, LaVine types

They don’t really have good stats at any level beyond PPG.

I’d obviously love that deal, but I suspect it fails the McNair test. Looking at it from the Pacers POV, I think it uses up their greatest trade assets to acquire two players that duplicate guys already on their roster (Brogdon and Warren, though there’s nothing wrong with having more shooters and combo forwards) without solving their playmaking issues. They could definitely use a versatile wing defender, but they could likely get a better/cheaper one than Barnes. Especially if they’re using Dipo and/or Turner to do it.
I’d do that in a heartbeat, but Indy hangs up.

Kings deal Buddy, Barnes and a handful of 2nd rounders to Philly for Horford, Richardson, Thybulle, and the #21.
Kings get out of Buddy and Barnes’ deals but eat Horford’s horrible deal. Kings get a nice prospect in Thybulle and depth with Richardson. Kings pick Tyler Bey at #21. Kings going full defense and plan for the future.
Philly gets a shooter and and solid wing to make a run in the East.
Three-Way Between Sac, Ind and GSW
Framework is essentially the Hield+12 for Wiggins+2 with the added wrinkle of immediately flipping Wiggins + Belly and picks into Myles Turner.
Sac gets the perfect frontcourt pairing for Marvin Bagley (and if he completely busts, Richaun Holmes). Turner brings the defense, rebounding and spacing the Kings desperately need and which will allow Bagley to focus mostly on inside scoring and takes pressure off him to be a cornerstone and develop on his time. With 2, they may have a shot at Edwards but I’d honestly prefer Avdija regardless. Fox-Bogi-Avdija-Bagley-Turner becomes the long-term core.
GS gets the third splash brother. Buddy will probably be unreal when he’s the third or fourth option you have to think about and is played to his strengths of running and gunning. With 12 I’ve heard the Warriors would be interested in Bey and this slot makes sense to pick him up while adding another lethal offensive option on the wing, which is what I’ve heard they’re looking for.
Pacers get a strong offensive wing player, albeit on a tough contract, along with an excellent stretch 4 to pair next to Sabonis. I’ve thrown in two picks to sweeten the pot, though I don’t know if it’d be enough to get them to part with Turner.
Overall, I’m not married to any of these suggestions but they’re more of a mental exercise. I think the Kings can go a lot of directions this season and I’m open-minded to a lot of those ways, just so long as they include Myles Turner. :p

Fox absorbs Oladipo’s money by the end of next season, Turner’s contract is fair value and Harris becomes a bit of a financial albatross, but at least he can run the floor, shoot the three, play defense and rebound. Him and Turner is a formidable frontcourt that complements each other well. Gives Bagley players to complement him in frontcourt and also serve as a contingency plan if he doesn’t pan out. Bench would need reinforcement behind the guards, maybe Bogi reverts to the 6th man. The concept I like best is that it extracts maximum value from Hield by sending him to a 76ers team that’s media has been relentless with Hield talk. In return, Turner and consolidated contracts into an All-Star upgrade over Barnes. Then throw darts at a board in the second round to fill out guard depth (especially in a deep PG class where we could pick up solid backups like Riller, Flynn, Winston, Pritchard or Mannion late). Core for the next 4 years is Fox-Bogi-Harris-Bagley-Turner and #12.
Overall, a solid lineup in the immediate term that could expect to compete for the playoffs while simultaneously giving openings for playing time to Kings developmental projects (Bagley, James, Jeffries, Guy, 2020 picks) and a good group of veterans to support their growth. That leads to strong results in the mid-long term. The big drawback is the Harris contract and even with the picks, I don’t think Pacers would bite.

Hi everybody, I just registered to share this trade idea with you. There’s a long explanation in the link, so I’ll just give a short summary: Kings get Oladipo, Turner, Lamb, 2022 first round pick. Pacers get Hield, Bagley, Bogdanovic (Sign-and-Trade 4-year 60 Million), 2020 second round pick, 2021 second round pick.
I’m just going to throw this into the room and run away.

The Warriors upgrade their frontcourt with a shooter in Bjelica and a young prospect/center upgrade over Looney in Bagley, who’s as likely to succeed under Steve Kerr as Wiggins (exaggeration alert). The #12 pick and two 2nds from Houston and Detroit let Golden State keep draft flexibility if other teams are also looking to move down.
The Timberwolves go all in on offense with the KAT-Russell-Hield trio and get Bogdan as a quality backup playmaker/shooter (either coming off the bench or starting at the 3). The Wolves also get to show Towns they are serious about competing with him as their star for the remainder of his contract instead of waiting around for a young prospect to show their potential (they’ve been down that road before…).
Obviously, James Johnson is salary fodder and will never set foot in Sacramento. Josh Okogie is a young SG with some upside who either starts at the 2 or comes off the bench depending on who the Kings select with the #1 and #2 picks. No more Buddy contract or grumbling, no more toxicity around Bagley, and no more concerns about overpaying for two aging guards who don’t match Fox’s timeline. There’s even room for more moves at this point with Barnes and Holmes still on the roster and a little cap space to take on some money in exchange for assets.
The Wolves would understandably be reluctant to give up the #1 pick for two older shooting guards, and losing Okogie comes down to their view of his standing as a part of their core long-term (and if the Wolves want to trade for an established shooting guard, I could imagine them preferring to build a package for KAT-Russell friend Devin Booker instead). Detroit’s 2nd-rounder might sweeten the deal for them, but how much difference is the 35th pick likely to make? (Don’t @ me, Draymond, Nemanja, Deandre Jordan…)
As for the Warriors, their valuation of Bagley is the X-factor here; do they believe they can work both him and Wiggins into their system and make out like bandits for the next three to five years? If so, what’s the harm in losing a top pick in a reportedly weak draft?
Now tell me: how bad is it?

My thinking behind this:
Wolves get shooting from Hield, where he doesn’t have to be a playmaker and can just focus on his shooting ability. TWovles get out of a large contract, replace it with a locked in shooter for years to go with KAT and Russell.
Heat get someone to replace Iggy if he retires/leaves. If he doesn’t, they still get a proven vet with a descending contract they can trade later if needed should they come up short in the next year or two.
Kings with pay JJ to basically stay away for a year, get a moderate sized contract in Hill to at least be there and possibly move later, and add 2 picks to a rebuild or fodder for future trades.
