Sunday night was a true Kings v. Lakers classic, reminiscent of all too many contests of this rivalry past – and the combination of a star game from De’Aaron Fox and a whole-team effort in overtime earned Sacramento a 132-127 victory in OT, securing their first win at home and improving their record to 2-1 in this young season.
De’Aaron Fox scored 37 points and 8 assists (14-24 shooting) and was the clear star on the court across the majority of the contest. But as the game went into overtime, he was stuck on the bench with an ankle injury, and fellow All-NBA teammate Domantas Sabonis sat near him, having fouled out in the final minutes of regulation. It took big shots from their teammates to secure the victory, as Malik Monk scored 11 points in overtime and Kevin Huerter hit the game-sealing dagger three with 32 seconds to go.
With 7:27 left in the 4th quarter and with the Kings trailing 99-97, Fox rolled his ankle on a drive and stalled the heartbeats of everyone in the Golden 1 Center for a few minutes. Fox then walked to the locker room but missed less than a minute of playing time before coming back out to the bench and igniting the Kings crowd. He clearly wasn’t 100%, but he kept the throttle at 100% – scoring 8 points after the injury as he tried to keep the Kings’ momentum going. As the game stretched into OT, Fox had to go to the bench, but saw his buddy Monk help secure the game in his absence. We’ll continue to keep an eye out for injury updates, but Fox seems likely to miss at least a game or two.
On the 20th anniversary since his NBA career started at Arco Arena in 2003, LeBron James hit the game-tying shot with 12.9 seconds to go in regulation that knotted the score at 115-115 a piece. Fox drew the defense on the ensuing play and Keegan Murray had an open look at a deep three, but it bounced off at the buzzer and sent the game to OT. LeBron finished with 27 points, 15 rebounds, 8 assists, and 8 turnovers in the loss for the Lakers, while Anthony Davis had 30 points, 16 rebounds, and 3 blocks. The Kings led the entire game until early in the 4th quarter, and the physical, veteran Lakers squad had their own shots to take over the game in both regulation and in overtime; but where Sacramento sank their late-game threes, Los Angeles did not.
Sabonis finished the game with 12 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists, before fouling out late in regulation. Monk had 22 points, 11 of which came in OT, and Murray finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.
The Kings floored the accelerator from the jump, pushing the pace and attacking the basket with physicality and success. Sabonis and Fox led the charge, combined for 6 of the Kings first 7 field goals and both knocking down their first threes of the contest. After Keegan was blocked at the rim twice against Davis in the first few minutes, De’Aaron attacked the basket and neutralized Davis with a gorgeous fake and layup. 9 of the 10 Kings who played in the quarter scored (aside from Murray), and 12 of their 16 buckets in the period were assisted. The period ended with a highlight hammer drop from JaVale McGree and a 41-28 lead for Sacramento. Much like two nights ago against the Warriors, the Kings lead shrank and eventually evaporated in the second half – but unlike that contest, the Kings showed up in the clutch.
The Kings will finish the local rivalry sandwich of games on Wednesday when they travel to San Francisco to face the Golden State Warriors.
Game Notes:
- Kevin Huerter had a terrific game, even if he was just 4-12 from the field. He finished the contest with 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks to go with his 12 points. He had some impressive rebounds against Davis in the paint, and had a highlight block against the big man on a drive. His mentality and defensive tenacity was excellent tonight, and his three pointer with 32 seconds left in OT helped secure the victory.
- Keegan Murray finished with an impressive stat line, but had some bumps in the road on both ends of the court. Late in the second period, he passed up a three point attempt from a Sabonis dribble-hand off that had Mike Brown frustrated. Midway through the third, Keegan passed up another open look, which had Brown even more incensed. Brown called for Sasha Vezenkov to enter for Murray, but on the very next play, Keegan hit a three, and Brown signaled Sasha right back to the bench.
- Vezenkov had another strong outing, and finished 11 points (including 2 threes) and 4 boards in 18 minutes, the 2nd most minutes of any reserve behind Monk. He was active on defense, showing quick hands on the perimeter, and blocked Rui Hachimura in the paint.
Monk led the way, after Fox went out, bobbing and weaving through the LA defense!
Red Velvet made it a point to grab big rebounds and hit a dagger 3 to seal the win!
Man this win felt as good as any last season. Love to see the guys playing for each other like that
It felt great to see LBJ and AD really give-it-their-all tonight and still fall short.
Send them back to LaLa Land with a loss!
more like LOST angeles, amiright?
Take the L and go back to Mordor, losers!
LeBron, you couldn’t beat us 20 years ago in your first NBA game at Arco, and you can’t beat us now?!
Excellent team-win with many important contributions from several players, starters and bench alike. Fox was fantastic again, here’s hoping for a full and quick recovery.
The Great Satan is defeated! Light The Beam!
FFS. The intensity in the 3rd game of an 82 game season seemed extraordinary. Wow.
Couple of notes:
GO KINGS!!!!!!
“Would anyone be surprised if he was an all star in the next two years?”
I don’t know what this is.
Very nicely summarized Michael, always a great read.
How ya been JP? I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for an NBA season.
100% agree. Especially on the Keegan point. He’s much more active in every phase and for the most part thriving. Getting blocked at the rim a bit more than I’d like but I think he’ll figure that out.
Sasha is a gamer. He’s kind of like that old dude in the rec league that torches everyone and makes them feel it.
Loved seeing Reeves lay an egg. I really can’t stand that overrated player.
Kings still not getting the calls. Fox was so frustrated by the willingness of the refs to call a foul every time someone flailed their head back.
Hope fox gets better soon, but at the same time I’m looking forward to seeing how the other guys make up for his absence. This team has a ton of firepower.
I typically don’t feel one way or the other about the ref’s, especially because we have Sabonis who might be one of the two or three most physical players in the game, but last night seemed to border on ludicrous. I love that Fox calls people out.
Here’s hoping Fox injury timeline isn’t too long. Regardless, team gotta find a way to make due without him for the time being
Drink pee out of a snake carcass while somebody captures it on video with a brilliant British accent. The cameraperson is the real hero.
The beam team redeems after the first loss. Good. We’re now 2-1 and the losing team is 1-2. Just had to look, though, at nba.com’s game highlight reels. Only 5 out of 8 are of the L*kers. Still stupid, given who won the game, but not as bad as I expected.

Fabulous Kings win! Big energy in G1C.
Off topic, but anyone know why
Laker’s turned their backs to the flag during the anthem? This a usual thing with them, or something new?

Fabulous!
I did a Google search and cannot see if there is a reason. As much as I hate sports and politics intersecting it does happen. My personal belief is that the US flag should be held in the highest regard but as a person that is a constitutionalist I support anyone’s right to burn or protest it; however, that does not mean I personally agree with their form of protest , or burning the flag (unless it’s proper disposal)
If they are doing it in protest and their company (meaning, the Lakers ownership agrees with it) then there is no harm. Again, I don’t agree with protesting during a sports event, and I wish that they did not intersect; but as a constitutionalist it would be hypocritical if I did not support the right to do so. I would also support them getting fined if it was against company rules and they chose to do so anyway., go ahead and flag me if this is too political.
A flag is a piece of cloth, and a symbol of important things. In and of itself, it’s value is negligible.
Anyone willing to die for one is a fool.
My father died for that flag in WW11. He was no fool. Because of that I am here today rooting for the Kings in the greatest country in the world. My sepdad and uncle also fought for that flag. I had 3 cousins at Peral
Harbor. 2 died and one Cabbage Murphy survived. Do not tell me they sacrificed their lives for nothing.
Gritty win, hope that Fox is okay.
Huerter was great, even when his shot didn’t fall. Played mostly good D, too.
He’s definitely played some good defense this season. Good help D too, and some BIG rebounds. I feel like once he gets out of his slump we’ll really get cooking again. Hopefully that dagger helps him remember how good of a shooter he is
The bright lights of tinsel town don’t shine as bright as The Beam.
The energy that was sucked out of the arena when Fox went down, and then exploded when he came back to the sideline was insane. Fox is a DOG. Not enough good words I can say about that kid and his heart and effort in an era of rest days for players. Thankfully we only have 2 games this week, hopefully he sits it out if he’s not 100% he definitely deserves it. 3’aron is also a sight to see. Guess those curry workouts have paid off.
Great team win without the stars in OT. Monk really stepped up and KH with a huge dagger at the end. Got to talk ???? to a few Lakers fans which was awesome.
LTB 🙂
Nice team win. Now build on that and beat the duds on Wednesday
Feel like players and fans used three games worth of energy last night.
You sort of can’t fault them for those “lazy” 3pt attempts late, having played at such a ballistic pace all night.
PLAY OF THE DAY !!!
Who on the Earth would think Huerter can block AD………
Just a tremendous job by Huerter the whole game
Loved when AD turned around to see what hit him. ????
Yeah that one was huge.
The angst is strong over on the L*kers forum. Reading it is like reading the Kings threads from 2+ years ago. Is it wrong to actually feel sorry for those fans? Haha just kidding, of course that would be wrong.
I sure hope we will be able to re-sign Monk after his contract is up this year.
I’m slowly accepting I may have been wrong about Sasha. I did not expect to see him contribute at a high level this early.
Consistency is key and what happens when Lyles comes back from whatever is keeping him out at the moment may impact the Vezenkov experiment but…
I’m happy to see he actually can play defense at the NBA level, and more importantly, impact the game on both ends of the floor. The coaches are going to have some tough decisions to make some nights if all these guys are playing to their potential.
