Kings 125, Nuggets 115: De’Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton take over

A huge fourth quarter run sealed the victory for Sacramento.
By | 249 Comments | Dec 29, 2020

In the second matchup with the Denver Nuggets in four games, the Sacramento Kings used a huge fourth quarter run to improve their record to 3-1 on the season. Several players stepped up for the Kings at different times, with De’Aaron Fox putting in 24 points and 9 assists, Marvin Bagley scoring all 18 of his points in the first half, Richaun Holmes recording 20 points on 13 field goal attempts, and much-heralded rookie Tyrese Haliburton once again impacting the game on both ends, filling the stat sheet with 13 points, 3 boards, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Denver enjoyed huge performances from Michael Porter Jr. (30 points, 10 boards) and Nikola Jokic (26 points, 11 rebounds, 12 assists, 10 turnovers), but Jamal Murray’s absence and a fourth quarter collapse proved too much to overcome for Denver, who fell to 1-3.

The first 24 minutes were a back-and-forth affair with both squads regularly exchanging the lead, but the highlight of the first half was easily the performance of Sacramento’s young bucks. De’Aaron Fox put up a solid 8 points and 7 assists, while Tyrese Haliburton’s 5 points and 2 steals weren’t properly representative of his on-court impact on both sides of the floor, but it was Marvin Bagley who stole the show for the Kings. In 18 minutes, he recorded 18 points on 9 shots, including hitting two of his four three-point attempts.

Beyond the box score numbers, one of the most impressive aspects of Bagley’s performance through the first two quarters was his ability to shoulder a large portion of the offensive load within the offensive game plan. The scoring didn’t find its genesis in Marvin taking his turn on the block for 10 seconds while the team stood around; most of his buckets came within the flow of the game, a rare sight in his young career.

After the excitement of the first half, the Kings devolved into the KANGZ in the third, giving up 38 points to Denver to just 22 of their own, including a 27-7 run by the Nuggets in the middle of the quarter. Michael Porter Jr. and Nikola Jokic absolutely dominated over the twelve minute span, combining for 31 points on just 12 field goal attempts. Yes, you read that correctly. De’Aaron Fox was the only reason the Kings were even able to hang around in the third, as he scored 9 of Sacramento’s 22 points. The Kings walked into the third with a 12 point lead and exited with a 4 point deficit.

The final period was a completely different story for the Kings. Sacramento stepped up the defensive pressure, holding the Nuggets to eight points over the first nine-plus minutes of the quarter, prompting a 19-3 run in the Kings favor. Tyrese Haliburton once again came up in the clutch in only his fourth NBA game, putting in 8 points, 3 boards, 3 assists, and 2 steals in the fourth, while Fox pumped in 7 of his own. The only discouraging aspect of the period was Marvin Bagley’s disappearance, as he played only five minutes in the third quarter and did not see the court in the fourth.

Player of the Game

De’Aaron Fox: 24 points (8/15 FG), 10 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block

Game Notes
  • Harrison Barnes recorded a career-high 8 assists.
  • After performing well against the Phoenix Suns, Glenn Robinson III did not see the floor, even during Sacramento’s awful third quarter.
  • Tyrese Haliburton led the Kings in plus-minus at +20 in 24 minutes.
  • Michael Porter Jr., Nikola Jokic, and Monte Morris accounted for 80% of Denver’s points.

Yeah, that’s bad form whining after a win. Bagley played well. He should be proud. Not his fault the coach didn’t play him the 4th quarter. But you can’t fault that decision. It worked.

I can fault the decision a lot, actually. There’s no reason for Nemanja Bjelica to play the majority of 4th qtr minutes over Bagley. None.

And before people say it’s Team Bagley, much of my Twitter TL said the same thing. It was a common theme of the 4th qtr commentary.

No reason except that Nemanja is a better defender…and can shoot. Bags is the worst defender on the floor. He’ll be missing lots of crunch time.

Floor spacing. Court vision. A couple of reasons. Yeah Bagley was hot in the first half but I wouldn’t suddenly look at Bagley as a superior floor spacer to Belly. And Bagley never moves the ball as well as Belly. Oh, and the win might be evidence that it wasn’t a bad decision.

The Kings were up 12 at half and won by 10. And the team had a +31.8 Net Rating in the first half when Bagley was on the floor.

Oh, and the win might be evidence that it wasn’t a bad decision.

So I’m not entirely sure this is true.

Well, this is what it is Adam. I’m a process over results guy. And I think the process of keeping Bagley out in the 2nd half the way Luke Walton did is poor.

Yeah, his father spouting off doesn’t do Marvin any favors, but that’s not my problem. That’s optics. I care very little about that. Ultimately, I think it was a pretty hollow victory because Marvin had less to do with it than ultimately what the Kings need from him consistently. Maybe Tuesday wasn’t that night. But it’s still a problem of process, however you slice it.

You are setting up a false construct though. It is not an either / or decision, it may be neither.

We finished the game with Fox-Hali-Buddy-HB-Holmes. I think we are going to see a lot of the lineup. This may be our best team.

I was advocating for this starting lineup before the season began except Whiteside over Holmes to add more size , but this lineup works as well or better depending on the opposing center.

So for Bagley to make the claim to 4th quarter minutes he has to show with his play why he is the better option than HB at 4 or Holmes at 5. That is not as easy a proposition as being the better option than Bjelica.

Bjelica minutes are down so far from 28 MPG last year to 16 MPG. I suspect his minutes are going to go down further as Bagley gets more comfortable and goes through the league once as a starter.

So I can see Bjelica fall out of the rotation altogether but that still does not guaranteed Bagley crunch time nminute for the aforementioned reason.

Did anyone say something about Marvin? The responses were to Team Bagley.

Having said that, it is not hard to imagine the father’s attitude rubbing off on MBIII. He has made comments in the past that seems to indicate he has a similar frame of mind and his play too often appear to be predicated on him getting his, instead of team play.

My comments of “not holding this tweet against MBIII” are in response to a purpled comment reading this:

“If his €œteam€ is going to act like this, i rather have bagley on another team.”

In my opinion this tweet shouldn’t make you want MBIII on another team. That’s all I am saying.

I want Bagley elsewhere if he can’t play within a team concept, which he hasn’t to date. His father publicly complaining about the lack of his son’s playing time after a win just reinforces that for me. We don’t need a player who plays selfishly and looks lost half the time along with a parent who perpetually complains about him not getting on the court enough. With that said, there was a glimmer of hope last night, Bagley looked like he knew what he was supposed to do, there was some improvement.

Not recently, but he has taken passive-aggressive shots at coaches and complained about his role his rookie year.

Having a camp like this can rub off, and considering the way Bagley approaches the game of basketball (ie, believe he’s the only person on the court and that matters), i’d say it has.

By your choice of words it looks to me like you have already passed judgement on Marvin the Man and player. This stupid tweet from some insignificant twit just adds fuel to your fire. That’s all good, fan how you want to fan!

Marvin had maybe his best game which got cut short with the rotation and flow of the 4th quarter. It is very encouraging to see him play like that. It’s something I can definitely get excited about.

I agree with you that it is a somewhat concerning tweet to see from what might be his dad, I just dont think people should be holding it against Marvin. Thats all.

If Team Bagley, aka Marvin’s Dad, wants to complain, that is his right.

But you can wreck his argument quick by hitting him with the FACTS.

Marvin just set a new personal high of starting 4 NBA games in a row entering his 3rd season. Is that not incremental progress towards where he wants to be as a player after being chronically injured since entering the NBA and former coach adamant about playing him off the bench?

Is Dad not being slightly impatient instead of acwknowledging that to start 4 games in a row, however modest that is, is a step in the right direction to become the star player he envisions? Set aside the emotion, and anyone has to admit this is true.

Next, his Dad wants him playing more minutes 25 MPG so far.

Hey, guess what Dad, everyone wants him to play 30-35 MPG and be on the floor in crunch time. That would make him more worthy of being the #2 pick.

No one disagrees with you, it would be great if he could demand those minutes with his highly impactful play. And to make that increase in MPG more probable and undeniable maybe Marvin should :

> shoot better than 48% TS% ( a terrible number)
> create for teammates better than 2 assists in 99 minutes (a terrible number)
> 94-111 ORtg-DRtg for net negative of -17 (among worst on team in net Rating)
> get more than 2 steals in 99 minutes (not good for a player of his athleticism)
> get more than 1 block in 99 minutes ( a terrible number)

25 MPG and a starters role is appropriate and probably generous considering the past performance and early returns.

And development of his son into the player we all want him to be is facilitated by progressively earning more time and touches by earning trust of teammates and coaching staff. He has NOT done that, yet.

It is also fact the Kings went with HB at 4, not Bjelica, in crunch time, making the above debate moot, and any objective observer can say Barnes has been the more dependable player for us in pre-season and early start over Bagley.

Does Team Bagley want to argue Bagley deserves minutes over Barnes based on the the totality of their performance over the last few weeks. If he thinks that he can kindly GTFO.

I can do snarky and snappy too, but I prefer to do snark with the numbers to back them up. MicahelPorter Jr was going off, and I think putting Barnes on him made more sense. And if Marvins Dad thinks his son was a better option at center over Holmes, especially as a defensive center, he is not being objective in the least.

So, again he has the right to love his son and want him to play 48 MPG, but he is clearly more emotionally invested than emotionally-oriented fans like all of us.

I am an emotional fan who wants Bagley to follow the career arc of Fox but I can simultaneously step back and be objective and see the big picture.

The only difference I think between fans and Team Bagley is we want him to earn that prominent role while Team Bagly thinks he’s entitled to that prominence. That is immaturity on their part. I do not think you want to indulge immaturity too much, let him vent get it out of his system, make cooler heads will prevail thereafter.

We were having debate last month about Buddy and the coach butting heads and I said it was normal given the adversity and nothing that could not put in rear view. Other fans were overreatving and contending that was “irreconcilible differences” and the relationsip needed to end.

I think I was proven right in regards to that situation and see this one similarly. It will all play out okay if Marvin progresses as a player on normal to acceerated course.

The big issue here that goes unmentioned, is that this team is going to be Fox’s and Haliburton’s, with Bagley in more of a supporting role. Hence, there will be less of an emphasis on Bagley over time, with the intention of developing him for a different role than before the drafting of Haliburton. Don’t think Team Bagley is going to like that very much. If Team Bagley can bring the Kings a good trade for Bagley, I’m all ears.

Bagley is still such a young man, I think that independence from an overbearing dad will come with time to be able to combat his fathers opinions if they are bad for his career. I had an overbearing dad like that and let me just say, I am grateful for him but his opinion was a lot stronger than mines at Bagley’s age.

It’s not like he tagged the Kings here. He’s just posting on social media. Are we raking all Kings family members’ posts and reposting them here? He’s going to be his number one fan. He’s not a fan of the Kings. He’s a Bagley fan. Everything is from this context. He was rooting along, expecting his son to get put back in, after a really solid showing in the first half and in an exciting game he got pulled. Of course he’s gonna be like WTF!? This isn’t surprising to me, nor do I care what he thinks about Marvin or the Kings.

It is not that simple….

This feels like the Buddy situation all over again in the way some fans are (over) reacting.

Didn’t Buddy ignoring a text message from his coach amount to “irreconcilable differences” in the estimation of many Kings fans?

Buddy vents bc the team collapsed for the second year in a row and that was tantamount to buying a one way ticket out of Sacramento?

Wrong!

It even compelled TMZ-like question from drama instigator Gary Gerould to say to Buddy “Does this take away your love of the game?!”

It was silly, and I said so, and now you would never know there was “serious interpersonal issues” with team off to 3-1 start.

So here we are again, Dad loves his son, Dad is immature, Dad wants his son to play 48 MPG, and the fans think the sky is falling.

I addressed how easy it is to put Dad in his place in my other post in his thread. You do not confront with emotion, you confront with facts.

The fact is that we generally want the same thing as the Dad does, we want 35 MPG and crunch time minutes for Bagley bc if his role expands to this degree it means he is more worthy of a being a former #2 pick.

It means he is earning the respect of teammates and coaches to be entrusted with a larger role.

The issue is whether those minutes should be granted or earned, whether he is entitled to them or not.

Obviously he is not entitled to anything, and that may be a false presumption of Team Bagley.

Bagley has show he has more to offer than Holmes at the 5 or Barnes at the 4, since I consider Bjelica on a relative non-factor.

Hypothetically, if this situation came to a head, the FO and coach could call Team Bagley (Dad) into their office and break out the stats, which I cited elsewhere, as to the variables that go into deciding who plays the most.

Until these numbers are more in Team Bagley’s favor, he does not have a strong case and anyone with tact can persuade them of that while laying out the path forward so that mutual objectives are reached.

Don’t black hole the ball, grab an occasional rebound, play even mediocre defense, and they probably don’t play Barnes in your position down the stretch Marv.

The fact that he’s been a bad all-around player from the jump, and his family acting like he’s a HOF in the making, is just silly.

As we all know, the Kings now have a GM who didn’t draft Bagley, and thus has no investment in him. Don’t be shocked if McNair decides sometime during the season that he’s had enough, and trades him. Games like last night, where he is showcased in the first half, and then sits in the 4th, could become the norm if he can’t play effectively within the team’s offensive and defensive schemes. Team Bagley is operating on the assumption that Divac is still the GM.

For the most part, he did play within the team yesterday (though that’s something he’s rarely done in his career).

For many reasons it has become cool to bag in Bagley €œthe pun’s for fun€. I think the kid is great and has a bit of growth left, but I wish the kings community hatred would stop.

He’a not the top of his draft class, but it doesn’t matter because we already drafted him 2 years ago. Wish people would get over themselves and stop blaming the kid because we drafted him instead of luka. It ain’t his fault that Vlade crapped the bed with the second pick

Great game! Players showing actual development from Luke WWWalton. Haven’t seen this since Mike Malone and Dave Joer- oh, guess we’re gonna fire the Head Coach soon…

Jokes aside, we are 3-1!

I think this has everything to do with Gentry. They are actually running an offense this year. I still hope Luke goes but at least he’s got help right now.

What a fun game but what in the world was those rotation decisions in the second half? Where was Bagley after playing the best half of his career?

Why the hell does Corey Joseph play so goddamn much? Luke, put the ball in Haliburton’s hand and let him create.

Because at the end of the day no matter how much he produces he’s still an awkward fit in the modern NBA.

Teams want switchability and the option to go small at any point, Bagley doesn’t provide that.

And even if he produced, I feel Haliburton was having the better game in the 1st half and it wasn’t close. His usage is just ridiculous, and let’s not pretend this game has some fair share of bad shot selection and poor decisions.

There’s a reason Walton trusts rookie Haliburton in the 4th and not 3rd year Bagley. He has an absurdly high usage rate, bogs down the offense, doesn’t give you the option to go small, and doesn’t defend. For better or worse, the offense when Bagley is on the floor is all about him, and too often he takes stupid shots and makes bad plays. I wouldn’t trust him really either. Holmes is the guy you want out there as a lone big if you want to go small, which is an increasingly valuable option in today’s game.

I say let Bagley get his stats all day every day because it makes him that much tradable before mid season! There is no way McNair looks at him and think €œthis is part of our core€. I hope some dumb teams buy that and trade their 2021 first round pick to us for him

I do agree that Haliburton needs the ball more and as much playing time as possible. No way CuJo should be getting as much/more.

The dude has IT. Both O and D get better when Hali on the floor. Top 3 pick in redraft. I LOVE the way he plays.

No idea how so many passed on him.

Team Bagley has a valid complaint. There’s no single valid reason as to why Bagley wasn’t in at all during the 4th quarter. Other than Luke Wallton doesn’t really trust him yet. Which is stupid.

Fox and Hali – A must….

Bagley had 2 boards the the first half which is at least half his game. I was surprised he didn’t play in the second half unless he’s on a minute restriction?

The group that was in was absolutely crushing it the last 8-9 minutes of the game on both ends of the court…WTF would you pull them out? There is not single valid reason to have Bagley play during that time based on how the game was going…unless you are worried about Marvins ego or self confidence…and if that is ruined by not playing the the 4th quarter of a game you team just won, after you were inserted to play crunch time in the previous game, then you aren’t worth the time anyway.

We obviously have no real idea how MARVIN actually feels about any of this. His dad is an ass it seems, well established. Just ignore and move on. Don’t put his Dad’s crap on him.

Oh was that huge decision being finalized this very night, 4 games into the season? I’m pretty sure he has played 4th quarter mins every other game. Can we get a pattern of behavior before getting too worried/upset?
I want Marvin to be successful and have zero hate on him. Frustration at times but not hate. I desperately want him to show signs of progress as I think it’s the only way this current format of the kings is able to show real long term improvement. He hasn’t even played 82 games yet. Fail to see how him missing a single 5-6 min stretch tonight in the 4th seals that decision on his future.
Walton thought the group on floor gave best chance to win in particular matchup. I’ll captain the tank and development train when the time comes (likely), but when your team is still 3-1, you play to win the game as Herm Edwards would say.

I’m not upset, and I’m not worried. I don’t think it “seals the decision on his future”. I’m just offering a valid reason to have him in the game.

If you think the win-loss record is more important than getting more information on Bagley’s ability to help this team in the future, that’s certainly your right. I’ll also say you seem to be assuming Marvin’s presence would have cost the Kings a win last night, and that’s certainly not provable.

But I don’t see anyone freaking out about it, just having a discussion.

I guess the point is that they can prolly walk and chew gum at the same time. Get him mins and see what they have while strategically trying to win games. You may not be freaking out but there are some up in arms crowd about the lack of mins last night.

Also not assuming they would have lost with Marvin. Pointed out Walton thought current line up gave best chance. Coach made a decision, might be diff next time. The main point is it doesn’t seem like a valid criticism of Walton when it hasn’t become a pattern of benching him in the 4th yet….and I don’t like Walton really either.

Pretty much this. My feelings aren’t hurt by any of it. I just disagreed with the decision to not play Bagley, still do. Still haven’t seen a real rebuttal to my point.

What really kills me is that Bagley played well in the 1st half and didn’t have a chance to establish rhythm in the 2nd half.

He can’t play defense, won’t pass the ball out of double and triple teams, doesn’t know what a screen is. He’s simply not very good right now. Despite what he accomplished for a single 23 minutes of his vastly underwhelming career.

I wouldn’t even say he accomplished all that much tonight. When your usage is pushing 30% you’d better produce.

He grabbed only 2 rebounds and he also did this thing where since he made one three he thought it gave him carte blanche to hoist them as he likes. There was this one play that annoyed me where he was clearly supposed to swing the ball around the horn as bigs tend to do but instead chucked one up with 15 seconds on the shot clock.

You can’t ever use him as the energy garbageman he needs to be because he’s such an exhausting commitment. The second he touches the floor you’re diverting your offense to make him the focal point. Apparently he and his family expect that out of the team as well.

CheekMagnet
December 30, 2020 6:32 am

I wouldn’t put too much on the 2 rebounds, a handful of occasions both he and Holmes were in position and jumped for the rebound and for whatever reason he let Richuan get it.

where he was hurting us was his man defense of Jokic. It was just a bad matchup and better suited for Richuan and Hassan.

How are there 15 down votes for this post? This is a valid comment based on what happened in last nights game.

We can’t have valid conversations about bagley’s playing well anymore? I just don’t get it. The kids never gunna be luka, but last night is more proof that he doesn’t need to be luka to help this team win. He clearly has potential to be a dynamic scorer, maybe even grow his game to an All-star
level. Yet we €œkings fans in general€ just want to hate the kid because we didn’t get Luka.

BTW I’m team Kings…not team bagley so please hold the pitchforks and torches.

People really need to move on from this “fans hate Bags because he got drafted over Luka”. No, fans are unhappy with Bagley because he’s a selfish player who shows no understanding of the NBA game when he’s on the floor, and little willingness to learn. Maybe, he will develop out of it, but, if so, it looks like a slow process, so slow, in fact, that he will probably end up playing elsewhere.

I remember BHE and I talking about Christian Wood probably 2 or 3 years ago on the old site and being perplexed why he hadn’t really stuck on a roster yet. It’s weird that it took him this long to break out but the talent has been there for awhile. Does anyone remember the late season game probably 3 years ago when he was on the Pelicans and he absolutely killed us? I think he’s finally put it all together.

I like Hali a lot, but spiking the football when you’re still on the 5-yard line isn’t always advisable.

Didn’t Bagley claim he was going to be league MVP before the season. I agree with you but I also like the chip on his shoulders.

Quality Win. Sure Murray didn’t play. But, Team didn’t fold after that hideous 3rd. They fought back. Fox and Hali leading the way. Haliburton already gets my vote for highest BBIQ on this team. It looks to be rubbing off in a good way. I can say with this current lineup, I think this is a .500 team. Maybe, a little better. I can empathize with Bagley’s camp. He was a force in the first half and he was kept out of the lineup in the 4th? I know wins are important. But, at what cost for developing a player that is supposed to be part of your core? I understand he’s a defensive sieve and doesn’t pass. But, Luke starts to pull this consistently and you can bet Bagley’s Camp is going to find a way to force him out of Sac.

It’s a long season. Bagley will get important minutes in his fair share of games; he’s the 2nd best center on the team and Holmes is foul prone.

Bagley’s real job is to earn those minutes by replicating Holmes’s defensive competence AND not disrupting the offense. He must learn to thrive as a roller and finisher first and foremost.

He literally inserted him late in crunch time of the last game. Why are people acting like this is same kind of consistent action Walton is doing. Can we get a bigger sample size before losing our collective ish about Marvins crunch time minutes. Just bc Marvin’s Dad says it’s an issue, doesn’t mean it really is.

I don’t give one iota of one shit about what one dipshit asshole father like Marvin Bagley Jr thinks about the Kings. I wish he said nothing, I think it would give this conversation a much different tone than the one it’s taken.

I mean he got minutes and had his chance in the 3rd qtr when they were getting smoked. Kings went on their run after he was on the bench and never looked back.

personal rule: i don’t really like crediting assistant coaches for improvements while crediting the head coach for failures. They are a team.

Bonus Rule: We can argue about rotations, but the coaches aren’t the ones missing shots and playing horrible defense in the 3rd quarter. Stop blaming the coaches for the players’ inability to use their limbs correctly in the 3rd quarter. These guys have proven they can’t play a full game. No coach will change that overnight.

I’ll say depends on the team. In closely matched teams it’s usual for the lead to switch even for only a few possessions. If that’s what you’re asking. BTW the Kings didn’t lead from start to finish tonight

Hali/Holmes Pt. II: In the 4Q, when they had a 2 on 1, and Hali could have dropped it to Holmes but took it all the way to the rack himself. Holmes was going nuts for him afterwards, loving the play. That’s a beautiful thing.

Kings starting 5 has been one of the best in the league.

Of 5 man lineups that have played more than 40 minutes together this season, the Kings starting 5 is 5th in Net Rating, behind the Lakers, Nets, Bucks, and Pacers starters.

Kings lineup has also played the most minutes together of that grouping.

That’s not nothing.

So we’re just going to be fun this year I guess? Other than the 1 bad Phoenix game, I like what I see from Fox. For whatever it’s worth he’s shooting much better from 3 and the free throw line through four games. SSS approved but it would be great if that continued.

What the hell has gotten into Harrison Barnes? Career high in assists? Multiple good drives and passes for easy buckets? If he keeps playing like this he’ll actually be worth his contract.

Richaun is great. Love him. Super consistent.

Marvin Bagley played the best half of basketball in his career. That’s a good thing. He made a great kick out pass for a three, and generally played within the flow of the offense and that is a welcome sight.

TYRESE HALIBURTON! Is it possible he’s rubbing off on his teammates and that’s the reason guys like Barnes look so much better? Is he the second best player on the team already? Did he really bury a dagger three with his heels on the Kings logo mid court? Where is this going? If he’s this good now what’s he’s going to be like in a few years? I was all for this being a tank year but if this dude is actually just awesome then so be it.

This team just looks so competent when he’s on the floor and Barnes has low key looked like a different player through 4 games. I’m not sure why but Halliburton’s presence is basically all that’s different. Still early but this is just fun right now.

Haliburton is damn too good to be a rookie. That’s what you get folks if you have a guy that has an excellent basketball IQ, it makes the game really fun to watch.

Like I said before the draft, this is the only kid I was willing to trade up for. Kings got a steal picking him up at 12. Thank you basketball gods!

Man that second quarter run and that 4th quarter run is some of the best Kings basketball in awhile. Halliburton runs the offense like a vet. Buddy is hustling on D and being a willing passer. Fox was killing it. Bagley looked awesome in the first Half. Holmes played awesome the whole game. They all look like they’re having fun playing together, and they’ll only get better with more time on the court.

Hey team Bagley your son is shooting under 50% on his career from the field and under 40% this year. That’s unacceptable for a big. How about you explain to him team concept on offense? You know, like the ball doesn’t have to stop every time he touches it.
At this point he is a taller, springier Walt Williams. Great spin move, no defense and highly inefficient. There I said it.
Great first half tonight though. But honestly!

It is really sad to me that Marvin likely had his best half of basketball as a King and because of some dumb comments by his Dad on Twitter people feel the need to come on here and shit talk Bagley for it instead of being happy that the Kings are off to a great start at 3 and 1. Bagley had a good game and he is still being ripped so fucking hard.

Marvin looked great tonight. I’m excited and optimistic he will continue to grow. He needs time and patience, he hasn’t played much. A few concerns:

Marvin is a big man who is still learning to play defense. This limits his time on the court. His defensive effort is improving. He appears to understand this limitation.

Marvin plays like a superstar, a high usage ball hog. Stars can do this, since they’re stars. Marvin isn’t a star yet. This further limits his role to a tall Lou Williams spark plug role. I’m not a Luke Walton fan, yet I have no issues with Marvin’s playing time tonight. I see improvement, he is looking to pass more often. If given time, Marvin will adjust.

Marvin is a grown man. He chooses how to involve his family in his affairs. His family is publicly given credit for helping him through injuries. If family receives the spotlight and then decides to be divisive, fans can be concerned. Lonzo and Lavar isn’t a story line anymore. Until Marvin reaches that point, I don’t feel bad getting frustrated at his family’s divisive comments. I fault Marvin for empowering them but he’s young still. Distancing yourself from what appear to be controlling, helicopter parents is the struggle of many young people of his generation.

I’m having a bit of a hard time believing what I’ve been seeing, but I’ll take it!

I actually think it might be Wiseman but he’s definitely in the top-3 right now. We’ll see where it goes.

Weisman’s probably the favorite, but I think Hali’s probably in 2nd place right now.

Considering Team Bagley thinks Marvin is a star, good luck getting a contract extension. MBIII will hit restricted free agency.

So yeah, I guess I owe our front office an apology. I was pretty steamed about losing Bogi for nothing but not it’s clear that Halliburton not only provides what Bogi did, he may even be an upgrade in the very near future.

Still love Bogdanovic, Serbia is still one of my favorite international teams, but yeah, hindsight says Halliburton over Bogi. 🙁

Monte can’t put together bad teams. Even if he tries, its impossible.

I find it interesting that Mike Malone has been part of two of the most exciting kings teams since 2002-one as our head coach and propelled us to a 8-5 start and the other the nuggets team head coach who lost to us twice this early in the season
