Bobby Jackson, Lindsey Harding & Jonah Herscu reported as candidates for Stockton Kings head coach

The Kings will attempt to find a G League coach from within their existing ranks.

The NBA G League is expected to back for the 2021-22 season, and the Stockton Kings need a new head coach. The Kings parted ways with Ty Ellis amid the pandemic, as well as former Stockton Kings GM Anthony McClish. Monte McNair hired Paul Johnson to his staff last October to run the Stockton Kings.

News10’s Sean Cunningham reported Monday that the Kings will look internally for a new head coach, with three candidates to kick off the interview process: Bobby Jackson, Lindsey Harding, and Jonah Herscu.

Bobby Jackson is a fan favorite from his playing days in Sacramento, and has hung around the Sacramento Kings coaching staff in various capacities for years. He was fired hired as an assistant under Paul Westphal in 2009, but was not retained when Michael Malone became head coach. He spent the 2013 season as an assistant for the Minnesota Timberwolves, before eventually finding his way back to the Kings. He’s spent the last few years as a player development coach for Sacramento under both Dave Joerger and Luke Walton.

Following a successful collegiate and WNBA career, Lindsey Harding began her coaching career with the Toronto Raptors Summer League team in 2017. She also worked as a scout and player development coach with the Philadelphia 76ers, and now works as a player development coach with the Sacramento Kings. Harding was also recently named head coach of the South Sudan women’s basketball team.

Jonah Herscu currently works as an advance scout for the Kings, and has extensive previous assistant coach experience. Herscu worked as an assistant coach for the WNBA’s Chicago Sky and for the G League’s Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

Sacramento will be intent on synergy between Luke Walton’s system with the Kings and with Stockton’s coaching staff.

My kid played ball against Bobby’s teams in AAU tournaments. He usually had better talent than most teams, and it seemed like he was content to let them run without a lot of guidance, since that was usually enough.

Which reminds me: Harold Pressley was almost always around, and was incredibly nice to everyone. He would coach my kid a little bit between games, and was a great presence. I know this is off-topic, but I’ll bring it all the way around by suggesting that they have Harold run the Stockton team.

I know, it’s horrifying. Fortunately, they’re both a lot more like my wife.

As long as you’ve managed to make them weird, it’s all good.

I’m hearing they found a candidate with every bit of Luke Walton’s intellect, coaching skill and qualifications, and they even convinced Clint Eastwood to introduce the new coach!

I guess they want to have the worst defense in the G-League as well as the NBA. Bring on that synergy!

I don’t know whether or not B-Jax is the best candidate for the gig, but he would easily crack my top five for all-time favorite Kings. Off the top of my head, that list might be Richmond, Corliss, B-Jax, Kevin Martin and Isaiah Thomas, though Sarunas Marciulionis and Wayman Tisdale would have to be considered as well.

I like that Jackson is the only guy from the only good team Sacramento as seen. It’s a good hint to the self-loathing nature of all long time Kings fans.

Well, there is a big difference between best and favorite. My faves list is a combination of effort or toughness or personal moments or class/comportment. These guys were all pro’s pros in my eyes, with the full understanding that different things ring different bells for different fans.

This is not to say that I did not like Webber or Peja, and Bibby provided the best in-person moment that I have ever witnessed as a Kings fan (game 5). My five best Kings would probably be Richmond, Webber, Peja, Cousins and Theus, Bibby or Artest.

Good calls here. Richmond, Webber, and Cousins are locks for “best.” I’d put Kevin Martin ahead of Theus, Bibby, and maybe Peja.

(The career stats were very similar, and I compared seasons 3-8 for both. I probably give Martin the edge because he had so much less talent around him.)

I’ll always have a place for Doug Christie, even though the numbers don’t really demonstrate how important he was to those great teams. To me, he was the ultimate glue guy, because he could anchor the defense, and if you needed him to score or facilitate, you were covered. It’s not hard to imagine DC getting twenty points per game if it had been necessary. So much skill & athleticism.

I like the inclusion of Artest. All of that talent, and never took plays off. It’s hard to not wonder how great he could have been if he had gotten help for his mental health much earlier in his career. That man truly loved to play basketball.

When all is said and done, I’d guess Fox easily surpasses Bibby among the best Sacramento-era players. It could be argued that he already has.

Didn’t we hire a guy from the only good team Sacramento has had for another front office job a few years ago?

It is truly unfortunate that the vast majority of great players have absolutely no competence about basketball once off the court.

Nah, since it seems to be the desire of this organization to piss off (or is that piss on) its fan base, the legacy assistant coaching staff would have to be Spencer Hawes, Matt Barnes, Georgios Papagiannis, Duje Dukan and Sim Bhullar.

As you can tell from my username I agree on Bobby Jackson being one of my favorite Kings. Cool guy. My wife saw him and his lady friend at the Galleria during the playoffs one year. My son, who was around 10 at the time didn’t think it was him. So my Wife goes up the girlfriend and mentions that. She turns to Bobby, who proceeds to chat up my son for a while. My son got home and had a grin ear to ear. Good guy. Didn’t have to take time, but did.

I don’t really know anything about the coaching ability of any of these people. Based on the snippets above Harding is the most interesting to me because of her coaching/scouting experience with smart, successful FOs.

Can we just “promote” Luke Walton to coach the Stockton Sacramento Kings ?

So that we can hire another coach for the Sacramento Kings ?

i have always wondered what this mythical system is?

Only obvious component of the “system” is zero defense.

The system is so good that most of the time the players do not even try. The opposing team messes up the system by walking onto the floor.
