Draft Day is here!
We’re already beginning to see a few small deals, and we could see additional trades as we move closer to the draft. Use this open thread to discuss anything and everything as we lead up to the draft.
Televised draft coverage begins on ESPN at 4pm PT. We’ll have a new open thread up specifically for the draft itself.
And if you need more draft content, the Kings Herald crew will be on ESPN 1320 throughout the day as guests of Damien Barling and Kenny Caraway. The full schedule is as follows:
2:30 – Tony Xypteras and Will Griffith
2:55 – Jason Jones of The Athletic
3:30 – Sanjesh Singh and Tim Maxell
5:30 – Richard Ivanowski
6:20 – Bryant West
7:00 – Jill Adge
7:30 – Greg Wissinger
Tune in throughout the day for our final insights leading up to and during the draft. You can listen live via their website.
Let’s do this! Bring on the trades!
I have no rhyme or reason but Aaron Nesmith and Kira Lewis Jr. are the two prospects that excite me.
I really liked Aaron Nesmith, but the reports that his foot injury is taking so long to heal gives me pause. Not sure if its all just a smoke screen. A healthy Nesmith will be my choice at 12. Not so sure about now.
Hoping the team is knowledgeable of his injury status and it’s not too serious. Seeing Cameron Johnson start to bloom on the Suns and make Kelly Oubre expendable after being labeled the best shooter in the draft warmed me up to the idea of Nesmith.
YES!!! I’m so glad ya’ll made the jump away from VOX and that it’s going so well. You’ve given me over a decade of online entertainment and I’m so happy to see that starting to really pay off.
Looks like OO has a foot injury that will keep him out of camp and maybe the beginning of the season.
He has a broken toe. I don’t think it will impact his draft stock.
I don’t know. Teams can be pretty wary of bigs with foot injuries.
It is a nice cushion though for a tank job or at least someone not interested in wins. Expect a fair amount of those considering next years class. If he slides to 12 wouldnt mind the risk. High on OO
With no March Madness to scout this year, it’s anyone’s guess who Vivek will pick…
Scary true. He’ll just pick whoever from Kentucky.
So, Tyrese Maxey, then. You could do a lot worse.
I don’t really see any indication that Vivek is providing input during the draft process.
I was saying it partially in jest. But I do have my doubts. Ever since several candidates withdrew from consideration from our GM job, and Joe D was kept on… my expectation is that it will be business as usual in the Kangz BB Ops dept.
But I hope to be proven wrong. We’ll see I guess.
but that’s the type of take that’s almost impossible to prove wrong.
Yep, just my opinion. But it’s based on 7+ years of Vivek-ery.
Rondo to the Hawks makes no sense to me.

Their back up PG situation last season was comically bad. They were like 7 net pts worse with Young off the court.
Fine, but Rondo?
Oh, I agree. I’m no fan of Rondo. But I guess he’s cheap, can defend well, and has the length to defend 2s at times if you want to play him with Young.
Of course they would have to make the playoffs to see the benefits. And as this is the Hawks, I might suggests thats a big ask.
An aside if this Bogi thing is indeed in doubt the culprit I expect is ATL saying they will raise their offer sheet. Will be curious how that informs the other players they are interested in.
Does it sound crazy, but I think the Warriors could really use Barnes. Barnes, Nemanja, and #12 for Wiggins and #2? I know it’s highly unlikely, but in this situation, who do the Kings take at #2?

Who knows with the level of smokescreens GSW has put up, but have heard they like Deni. If they move I expect them still trying to hover in the 4 to 7 range.
I don’t know about you but I don’t really want Wiggins or this years number 2 pick
Uh oh.

You lightning-fast son of a…!
If that is indeed true that is a MASSIVE bombshell. Wow, not good news AT ALL. Has me very concerned. Especially when the deal is predicated on our ability to cordially agree to something.

Wait, why would they even talk about the trade before getting an agreement from Bogdan?
Because Kangz?
Or Buckz.
I guess until it’s signed, it’s not signed. Did Bogi’s people get wind of a bigger dollar offer?
There was discussion of that in previous threads. Being that this deal can’t happen until Friday then finalized until 22nd,the deal would have been a handshake anyway. Nothing to stop either party from backing out if something better came along.
Just about the time I got comfortable moving on from him….
I’m guessing that’s what happened. Bogie’s agent told the Kings that they could either sign and trade him to Milwaukee, or try to match Atlanta’s higher offer. Bogie thought he’d take less for a better situation, or get paid more in a worse one. Another team got wind that there were no discussions before the end of moratorium and did not reach out with another option.
I think the moral of this story is don’t leak deals to the press until it’s a sure thing, especially if it can’t even be a sure thing for over a week.
If it was a leak, it was from the Bucks.
Its curious though because in theory this is the deal that assures Giannis. You would think they would be very cautious considering the gravity of the payoff. The same goes for the Kings bluffing their willingness to match other teams.
This is not good news though if legitimate. Kings dont have a lot of leverage in this situation in my view. The fact a trade was agreed it isnt a huge bode of confidence in another team being scared of us matching. Or in that case a good relationship with Bogi cordially going along with us matching.
Fact is if the Bucks deal collapses the Kings will likely fetch something far worse, if anything partially because they previously showed their hand.
Or is this a negotiating ploy to get the money that is desired/promised?
Yeah, it seems likely Bogi’s agent is just leveraging the fact that the Bucks got caught with their hand in the cookie jar to get him $16 per instead of $14 per. Losing him completely would make the Bucks look extremely dumb both with Giannis and their fans, unless they win a chip without him this year. If some mystery team is coming in at $20 and scaring the Bucks out of the Bogi business completely then we’re screwed, but otherwise the Kings could just match any similar offer and make the same deal with the Bucks that was previously agreed.
My thinking as well upon review. I could see a Giannis suitor leaking the trade is in peril. Or ATL calling Bogi’s agent and saying they could beat the assumed number. But upon more thinking I think its Bogi’s team knowing the Bucks cant turn this deal down. They have won the lottery ten times over in retaining Giannis. They cant jeopardize that in any way. Got to pay the facilitator of making that a reality then.
Say the deal falls through I suspect he will have other suitors around the league
Hope Hayes falls to us, super excited to see all the moves that are going to happen during this draft!
That would be really fun. Have to say just generally excited for this draft. Like a number of players in our range. The board I expect to have fun movement. I can see myself intrigued with the team in a number of ways with a number of players.
The Athletic reporting Bogi deal in danger because he never agreed to sign with Bucks. OOF.
I thought this was gonna be one of the least stressful draft nights possibly this decade. As a Kings fan, one should know better.
Boom. No Buddy to Philly I’d guess.

Thunder with even more picks now.

Tells you what Horfords value is around the league doesn’t it!!
A Sixers first (unless you’re going to reverse-protect it for 5 years or something) is not really that valuable. They’re going to be in contention for a while, especially if they have some backcourt shooting.
I feel like this whole bogi thing is just a CYA/CBA situation. There’s no way that they would get this far into it if there was any ongoing negotiations. As I reported yesterday, Windhorst reported that Bogi and Giannis have been discussing playing together for a while now.
I feel like Presti is multiple move ahead of everyone right now.
