2022 Kings Herald Draft Board: Pick No. 4

Paolo Banchero is off the board.
By | 100 Comments | May 26, 2022

Mar 18, 2022; Greenville, SC, USA; Duke Blue Devils forward Paolo Banchero (5) dunks the ball against Cal State Fullerton Titans forward E.J. Anosike (24) during the first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

With 68% of the vote, Paolo Banchero is off the board. He joins Chet Holmgren and Jabari Smith Jr.

When a choice comes up, pick who you’d want the Kings to pick given all the players remaining.  Note: THIS IS NOT A MOCK DRAFT. This is a draft board, a ranked list of prospects you’d like to see the Kings pick. In other words, if we were the Kings front office, when our pick came up, we’d take the top name left on our board. So pick your choice, not who you think Monte McNair or anyone else would choose in a slot.

Explain your choice in the comments, and lobby for who should be added to the next pick’s choices.

This poll ends at 5 AM tomorrow. The next one will begin shortly thereafter.  We will go roughly 20 picks deep.

I like Shaedon Sharpe at 3, I like Shaedon Sharpe at 4. Superstar or bust (quite literally in this case, I think)

Yeah I can’t get myself off the Sharpe hype train. Feels like the highest ceiling player here at 4 on the board

Keegan Murray. He seems like the safest pick here. The Kings have had so many misses in the draft, they need someone that is highly likely to be a net positive. Ivey and Sharpe seem more volatile.

Jaden Ivey. I could give you a lot of well thought out reasons for selecting Ivey over Murray or Sharpe here, but it would all be bullshit. The honest truth is that I just want to be able to post this gif and caption-

Sharpe for me. I guess this is a philosophical question at some level. At 4 I feel like you should swing for the fences. However if the kings truly have Sharpe, Ivey and Murray graded equally, a trade back with Indiana would be preferable if they could get Duarte, for example. I may be higher on Duarte than some. On the other hand if they truly believe Ivey is head and shoulders above everyone else, simply take him. In my opinion they need to make this pick as if Fox is no longer on the roster. We can’t keep making personnel decisions to accommodate a player who is unequivocally not a number one and more than likely not a number 2.

I won’t complain if we get any of Murray, Ivey, Sharpe at number 4.

At least until they start sucking when the regular season starts.

But I think we can get a good player out of one of those guys.

I agree. I can talk myself into any of them at this point. But if I’m picking here today for the board, I voted Ivey. There are fit concerns, but I think he’s the most talented available. Sharpe might be better but is unproven. Ivey proved it against top collegiate competition. Murray is also talented and arguably more refined, but I think talent wise Ivey is still better and has more upside.

Based on his track record of drafting Hali and Mitchell, I think he’ll take Murray. He fits the mold better.

I don’t know if it’ll end up that way, but one of the first things that struck me about Murray was that he’s absolutely in the mold of our past two picks. He’s a McNair player for sure. I believe McNair would prefer to take Murray, ideally by trading down and grabbing an asset.

The problem of course is this imposed playoff mandate, and no contract extension. If McNair needs to put all of his eggs in one very risky basket in order to meet that goal, a surer choice like Murray might not move the needle enough in one season to make it happen. They should just extend McNair two seasons for having that idiot Walton imposed upon him.

I do think that Murray’s ceiling is higher than projected, and even if no trades happen, I’d not be upset about taking him at four.

I totally agree. Murray is more of a Monte type of pick. I just think #4 is a tad high for Murray IMO. I know others ranked Murray as high as 4 but not for me.

Ivey on the other hand could well be Monte’s pick since he also somewhat fits the mold. Sophomore player coming out of college, has star potential and can help the Kings in day 1.

I have Jeremy Sochan here but I know he probably won’t go until 10th in all likelihood.

Of the choices available on the poll, my choice here would be Sharpe as I have him 5th. The pros and cons of him are already discussed. But I think he’s a risk you have to consider.

I think my new top 10 looks like this:

1) Smith Jr
2) Holmgren
3) Banchero
4) Sochan
5) Sharpe
6) Murray
7) Mathurin
8) Daniels
9) Ivey
10) Eason

I get the arguments for Jaden Ivey, but I just don’t see how that really works unless you think he’s a major star. Circumstances matter and I think what type of opportunities you offer a young player to grow into the player you think he can become is critical.

I don’t have to squint to see how Sharpe or Murray oor Mathurin. But I do with Ivey and that’s why he’s so low for me.

I actually really like Sochan too. I wouldn’t take him over Ivey right now, but I have him neck and neck with Murray and ahead of Sharpe. Sochan can really disrupt things defensively at the wing and if he, Davion, and DDV are on the floor at the same time, they could wreck all kinds of havoc on the perimeter.

I went Jaden Ivey. More upside than Keegan IMO. More of a known quantity than Sharpe. Possible star with his athleticism. Mom played professionally and coaches college. I wouldn’t hate it if we ended up taking him and figuring out the guard situation after.

In order to do this, Bridges would have to agree to a S&T in advance and that would lead to tampering charges. Among other things, and, honestly, I don’t think the NBA would allow the deal.

Both 13 and 15 seems excessive. I’d take Miles Bridges and 13 in a heart beat. I’ve always really liked his game. As Jerry would say, he’s a tough buckaroo. Then I’d try to trade up from 13 with guys like Holmes and Holiday plus some 2nd round picks. Would be fine with best player available as well.

I’m so high on Miles Bridges I’d be fine with him and #15. Would be less cool but I’d be fine with it.

What’s the point of another vet for a year if we can keep them… big if? This short term thinking is effing killing us. We don’t need another vet rental… we need long term assets who can help! Draft for the team needs and coach to develop.

What’s the point of trading the fourth pick for one playoff series before falling back to mediocrity? Despite their complete lack of recent success, they should still be aiming to build a championship-contending team, not just a playoff one. Draft Keegan Murray at 4. Trade Barnes to the Warriors for Wiggins and Moody. Try to find a trade for Fox. Maybe to the Wizards for their pick and Hachimura and a salary filler.

I cannot justify drafting a kid who has not played basketball higher than the HS/AAU level because of some 1 on none workouts while Murray and Ivey remain on the board.

I believe Jaden Ivey is BPA at this point. He has the makings of a real star in the NBA, but he also has a considerably lower floor and would fit rather poorly alongside Fox-Sabonis. I envision us drafting Ivey, having the spacing and defense be absolutely wretched, and then trying to rectify it by shipping out Fox at well below market value. Because of this, even though he’s the best player, I don’t actually think he presents the best value to this team.

That’s why I go Murray. He’s a 6’8″ forward that can defend 3-5, has tremendous footwork in the post, can shoot outside, run the break, rebound, make good decisions, and hustle. He may not be destined for superstardom, but he’s more than capable of becoming a fringe All-Star and highly valued stretch-4 next to Sabonis. He fits the team and can contribute right away.

Murray will complement and optimize the roster around him, whereas Ivey will need the roster blown up to fit his style. Maybe hitting the reset button would be a good thing overall, but that’s not how the Kings have been positioning themselves the past two seasons. Take the guy you know will be in the league 5 years from now.

I went with Murray as I think he’s going to be the Haliburton of this draft – a hyper-efficient SF that doesn’t always need the ball in his hands to score. He is going to surprise a lot of folks. I also want to add that there is always some un-proven prospect with some kind of unicorn athleticism or height that ends up being a bust each year. Bamba and Thabeet come to mind, off the top of my head. These prospects are ultra risky. For every bucket full of these prospects, you might get one Giannis. I feel like this year that guy is Sharpe – ultra athletic but a big unknown. We also need to factor in that we have a timeline of 2 years for Sabonis. Not sure if Sharpe hits his potential in two years or if we can make Ivey + Fox work after a year of seeing them play. Of course the narrative is always older players don’t have as much potential, but I feel like it isn’t as much of a knock to Murray as some would make it out to be.

I went with Keegan Murray. Even with all the hype around Sharpe my instinct is telling me Murray is the way to go here. I feel like his upside is being extremely downplayed. Just because he’s 22 doesn’t mean the guy can’t get better. As he is right now with zero improvement moving forward he seems like a legit starting 4 with how versatile he is. He literally covers every single NEED that this team NEEDS.

in addition, I have no way of knowing this but he appears to have the highest B ball IQ from almost anyone in this draft. I’ve said it in years past and I will stick by those statements… when in doubt go with the guy who has the highest basketball IQ. I think it’s clear that Murray wins out in his b ball IQ over the other guys being discussed in this range of the draft.

side note on Ivey. We always bitch and complain about Fox not improving much as a shooter. Then we talk about drafting Ivey who also can’t shoot and suddenly seem to be throwing all our eggs in the basket for a fox type player as though he could be the franchise player we always wanted. Seems a bit hypocritical to me if I start analyzing it.

ps. I think fox is going to be a much improved 3pt shooter next season. I just have that feeling. Excited for him to prove it.

my Beer drinking from the stress of this kings herald draft poll has paid off. I feel very good with saying Murray here at 4 is not only the safe choice but the best choice.

I need a grapefruit flavored sparkling water.

Yeah, I don’t get the draft Ivey and reset the roster because he duplicates too much of what Fox does.

Sam Vecenie says a lot of times that you look for guys that can dribble, pass, and shoot. Murray does those things. Maybe the dribble isn’t world beating, but it’s enough to work for his position.

I continue to be baffled by the downgrading of players who’ve reached the ripe old age of twenty, and who, presumably, have pubes.

Murray is twenty-two? My stars! He’s going to be a very good NBA player, but that only gives his career, what? Twelve, maybe fifteen seasons, instead of seventeen or twenty?

It just seems dumb to me. and it’s not if there aren’t many examples every season of teenager needing a few years to become an actual NBA player. Murray isn’t thirty. Hell, no one is even sure if he’s done growing yet!

After watching Brunson in the playoffs he’s a much better player than Fox. We are not getting good value for Fox and we should move him for the right deal. It’s one thing to think Fox is going to be a much improved 3 point shooter but it’s hasn’t haven’t yet and nothing to indicate that’s going to occur. Also, Brunson is a much better defender and Fox isn’t that great of a facilitator. I can’t see the Kings winning with Fox as their second best player.

I selected Sharpe, thinking that he probably provides more positional versatility than Ivey, although I will concede that that’s pretty weak shit.

Murray.

As of today Sharpe is too much of an unknown and Ivey is redundant with Fox. I have Murray at #3 on my board as it is. Baring any new information or enlightening workouts, I’m gonna be disappointed if the Kings pass on Murray at #4.

If two players are viewed as being in the same tier, then you draft for fit. If the Kings have Ivey in a tier above Murray, then they should draft Ivey. But if they are seen as equal talents, take the guy that is not redundant, imo

When have the Kings drafted for fit, because I feel they’ve drafted whom they felt was the BPA throughout the entirety of the Vivek era. They drafted McLemore and Stauskas in back to back years, drafted WCS and PapaG when they had DMC, and have taken a PG the last two years when they had Fox.

I don’t think so. I feel Jabri, Chet and Paolo are all going to be very good players. The only thing that would give me pause is the fact that they dropped. I don’t have Ivey or Sharpe in the same tier as the top 3, so them jumping would surprise me. If Murray somehow moves up, it wouldn’t surprise me. I just have a feeling he is going to impress people in interviews and workouts. Outside of Jabari he might the 2rd or 3rd safest pick in the draft, which is why I don’t think he slips past McNair.

Murray jumping into the top 3 would surprise me more than Sharpe or Ivey jumping into the top 3 b/c Murray’s viewed as having the lowest ceiling of the top 6 prospects. I wouldn’t be surprised if GMs have a different POV than me. My tiers are:

Tier 1: Jabari, Paolo
Tier 2: Chet
Tier 3: Sharpe, Ivey, Murray

I voted for Sharpe because I think he has the highest ceiling. With lucking into the 4th pick, our “playoff mandate” next year, trying to build a playoff contender to keep Domas when he’s up for an extension, and the coaching success Mike Brown has shown, we might not have another top 5ish pick for a few years*** so I would rather really go for it and draft the guy with the highest ceiling.

In all honesty, though, Sharpe, Ivey, and Murray are all the same tier for me.

***We’re the Kings so we could of course have a top 5ish pick every year

I went with Murray. Sharpe is too much of an unknown for me but could easily jump Murray.

We’ve been in basketball hell over half my life. I say shoot for potential (Ivey or Sharpe). If they end up being a bust, we end up at the top of the draft lottery again. Rather shoot for a potential superstar over the safe pick.

Who’s the last player the Kings drafted that had the “special talent” label?

I think it’s Ben McLemore. Outside of the He Who Shall Not Be Named pick at #2, this is the highest pick we’ve had since Tyreke, who was also #4. With all of the terrible seasons since the team came to Sacramento, we’ve only had seven top 5 picks. On average, once every 5 years. Terrible luck for a terrible franchise. As I said above, I think we have to take advantage and go with the highest potential, swing for the fences pick. To me, it’s Sharpe. Watching Sharpe single-handedly lead another team to the Conference finals in 4 years would be really painful.

Jaden Ivey is a better prospect than Keegan Murray, and significantly more proven than Shaedon Sharpe. Ivey should be the pick.

Today is Sharpe’s day. Although I wouldn’t be upset with Murray or Ivey. Keep thinking Ivey could be the next Donovan Mitchell or Anthony Edwards.

if the rumors are true and Ivey was WAY above Murray and Sharpe, you take him and figure out the “fit.”

I don’t remember if I voted earlier this morning. In any case, Sharpe for me. I think he fits a need, and I think he’s got the highest ceiling with the guys available.

Now it gets fun.

I went Murray. Sometimes the safe pick is the star pick. I think Murray’s ceiling isn’t as low as all the talking talkers say it is. Dude is going to be really good.

Yup. He just keeps proving the doubters wrong. He wasn’t a high school stud that got recruited. He ended up playing post graduate season in Florida to get his name out there and was still only a 3 star recruit after that. He finally goes to Iowa where he learns and plays behind the NCAA player of the year in Luke Garza his freshman year, then damn near mimics Garza’s senior numbers his sophomore season. He was on no one’s draft boards to start the college season and now may go in the top 5.

He just keeps getting better. For the life of me, I can’t see why folks doubt his ceiling.

How’s this for a ceiling…I think he could be the next Chris Bosh.

Why is he 1-2 years older? Did he do a development year after high school before playing in college for 2 years?

Yup. I think he only got an offer from a Div III school when he graduated high school.

I read a Ringer article that said that his only Division I offer in HS was from Western Illinois.

We will slowly watch the Top 3 go in the draft and then for pick 4, I expect Sacramento to Murray up and pick Keegan.

Kings Comparison for Keegan Murray: Rudy Gay, Eddie Johnson

It’s the draft lottery, we throw our coin in the fountain and pray that our wish will come true. I’d like to base that wish on some tangibles – Keegan Murray is all about the tangibles. Go with what you know – this was probably the best player in NCAA Men’s College Div I basketball for 2021-2022.

So now that we’re at our actual pick, it gets really freaking hard. Had to go with Shannon sharp. Wanted to pick Keegan Murray due to fit, but I think it might be a reach for him at the four. Plus I watched him in the tourney and was less impressed by his performance than his college numbers suggest. Small sample size, but I think we need a Superstar potential guy. It’s a must for this franchise.

Anyways.. I have grown to trust Monte. I think he’s nailed every move so far (with big exception for letting Bogi walk…FFS) 🤦🏽‍♂️

I listened to McGaffery , Murray’s coach this morning. He spent 28 minutes explaining how Murray will fit on the Kings without knocking any other player. If you haven’t listened to this you should. Even before the comments I picked Murray to be a king. Enough said.

Do you have a link? I searched but couldn’t find any interviews where he discussed Murray fit with kings. I would like to listen if I can find it.

I love Murray. I really like Ivey, although the fit is messy. Even still, I swing for the fences here and take Sharpe assuming the FO liked what they saw and heard in workout and interviews.

Call me crazy, that’s fine, but I think I would want to see Ivey or Sharpe paired with Davion in the backcourt. Trade Fox and Holmes and sign Bamba.

Davion
Ivey or Sharpe
Someone!
Saboner
Bamba

Yeah, yeah do that Monte.
