Marvin Bagley is not expected to receive an extention from the Sacramento Kings, according to a report from Marc Stein. The news isn’t exactly a surprise, but Stein is the first to offer a true report confirming those expectations:
With five hours to go before the NBA's Class of 2018 extension deadline at 6 PM, no deal is expected for Sacramento's Marvin Bagley III, league sources say.
Bagley, 2018's No. 2 overall pick, would thus become a restricted free agent next summer.

Bagley’s injury history is surely a factor in Sacramento’s decision, as Bagley has struggled to stay on the court and prove what role he would fit into. Over three seasons Bagley has only play in 118 games. Jaren Jackson Jr did get an extension from the Grizzlies despite appearing in just 126 games over the same time period, but has been a better all around player when he’s been on the floor, but it’s still a risk by the Grizzlies and a risk the Kings don’t appear eager to take.
The Kings could, however, still keep Bagley beyond this season. At the end of this year the Kings will have the opportunity to give Bagley a Qualifying Offer, which would make him a restricted free agent. The Kings could then match any offer sheet Bagley signs, they could work out a sign-and-trade, or they could rescind the offer if they wanted to release the cap hold.
At the end of the day, this simply confirms what we already knew. Right now Marvin Bagley has to prove himself. Whether it’s to impress the Kings or impress future employers, this season is Bagley’s chance to change his narrative.
I would think that Marvin would be eligible for a hyper extension.
“You are the worst,” he said enviously.
This seems like the smartest way to play it, since it’ll be the organization that gets final say as to where Bagley plays next season.
Is it? He doesn’t have to accept a QO, does he? Or am I mistaken?
Bagley would only be a restricted free agent if the Kings decide to put forth a qualifying offer, I believe.
Doesn’t the word “offer” imply that it also needs acceptance?
I truly don’t know.
He can accept it or not. If he doesn’t, he can sign with another team, but since the QO is there, if he signs with another team and the Kings decide to match, then he has to sign the matched contract with the Kings.
Gotcha. Thanks.
I think since he’s RFA, if he wasn’t to receive other offers, he’d have to take the QO to remain with the Kings. There’s a ton I don’t know about this stuff, but I think if all he gets is the QO, other than holding out, I don’t know if a player in that situation has other options.
Then if the Kings don’t issue a QO, he’s open sport for whomever at any price. But, and I can’t emphasize this strongly enough, I REALLY HAVE NO IDEA.
I think you are right. If they offer him the QO he either has to take it or take a RFA offer. My fear is the QO may be more than he is worth on the market, so the Kings may be left holding the bag of another year of Bagley at a higher price that what he is worth. He’d then be even more unmovable in trade than he is now.
If the Kings give the QO, they can still rescind it at any time (making Marvin a UFA), or the Kings and he could agree to terms on whatever deal they want. The QO doesn’t limit the Kings much other than a cap hold. They only time you don’t extend it is if you’re worried the player might take that QO.
Wait, so they can offer the QO, which would indirectly affect his free agency negotiations because he would have $14M sitting on the table, but could then rescind it if Bagley doesn’t like other offers and chooses to take the $14M? That seems shady.
They can’t rescind it if he accepts it. But if he accepts it, he can’t look for other offers because he’s under contract. The QO is just sitting there unsigned and giving the Kings the rights to match any other offer. If the Kings find something better, they can rescind the QO if he hasn’t accepted it.
At this point, it seems unlikely the Kings even offer the QO.
The cap hold is the amount of the QO.(UPDATE: Except it’s not. Cap holds are whatever the % amount of a players previous season salary is which seems to be 250% in this case.) Rescinding the QO just means you no longer have right of first refusal. Or making the player an RFA in otherwords. In order to lose Bird rights on a player, you have to renounce the player’s Bird rights. The QO and Bird rights are completely separate mechanisms.
FWIW.
It looks like his QO is $14,762,308, with the cap hold being $28,280,284, which seems like a lot.
It’s fairly nuts that if Marvin had the kind of season that would dictate that the Kings make that offer, other teams could offer something well north of that.
I got this from Sportrac, but again, I may not actually understand what I’m looking at.
As others have pointed out. The offer drops significantly if he’s not starter caliber based on his minutes and/or number of starts.
This is quality message board messaging. Kudos
They offered him one, but he said he’s “already got one, it’s very nice”.
At his current pace, by that I mean missing half of his games and underperforming on the court, is Bagley even worth the QO? If Bagley continues to perform like his first 3 seasons, QO is quite pricey and Bagley just may take it because it is more than he would make as a RFA. IMO, he’d have to have his best year in order yet for the Kings to extend the QO.
At best, if he decided to go free agency, he probably wouldn’t get anything more than a cheap one year deal, barring some huge turnaround in his play and ability to stay on the court.
A cheap 1+1 deal with the second year being a team option.
I read somewhere that if he doesn’t play a certain amount of minutes and/or has a certain amount of starts, the QO is much lower. Don’t know if that’s true.
If he doesn’t meet “starter criteria” I believe his QO will be $6.02M, or what the 15th overall pick in the 2018 draft would have as a QO.
I don’t know about Bagley’s cap hold being lowered though. It will be ginormous if it remains standard. 250% of his 4th year salary if that salary is above league average which it might be. So $28.28M.
Wowzers! All the more reason to move him for peanuts by the deadline if he is not apart of the future.
It’s far more likely Bagley is waived. Nobody really trades for a guy like him who isn’t playing and underachieving.
May as well unpack the equipment
I am not a Bagley hater. On the other hand, I have been, to say the least, disappointed in his play.
So do the Kings decide to send good money after bad performance? I guess not. They took the middle road- let him prove himself, leave open option for QO and the right to match a RFA offer. The other option is to just not offer the QO and then he leaves as a FA.
The current offer would have had to be 14.8 million or so and I am not sure what the QO at the end of this season would be.
Frustrating since quite a few of the players in his draft have excelled and he was #2. Water under bridge, spilled milk, mistakes ……
Any word on Bagley’s knee? Is he actually hurt again or being held out or holding out for some other reason?
Who knows, given the history of transparency with the Kings’ athletic department…
He was on the floor in that video from a couple days back where Fox locked down Davion and TT got the block.
Someone interview Doug Christie on the sly.
I doubt we get any official updates on it until Wednesday when we find out if he’s playing or not.
I hope being held out for trade. Bagley for Cam Reddish straight up.
Of course, anything McNair would be willing to offer Bagley would be unwilling to accept. He’s got the final year of his deal here. He’s going to bet on playing better and getting a bigger deal in RFA.
I honestly hope he does play well, so well that he has some trade value for a team looking to retain his RFA rights. Then we can get something back. It’s time to move on – for the front office, team Bagley, and the fanbase.
OT: Here is a guy I’d like Monte to target in trade.
Young guy and gettable. Come on down!
Yes, please
He’s fallen in the depth charts behind Washington and Hayward and they’ve now added Oubre. Hornets are also very shallow at center and the Kings have quite a few bigs.
If for some reason the Hornets are down on Bridges, the Kings should offer a pick and filler to get him. Len, Woodard, and a 2023 pick?
Len can’t be traded until Dec 15th.
Then let’s do it then!
Bagley straight up! Shit man, thrown in 2nd round picks Len and Woodard on top of Bagley. Crazy this deal hasn’t been done for both sides.
4 x $22.5 mil per season. With Bridges, I could absolutely live with that.
I know nothing about him, looked at his Wikipedia page. How is his defense?
Average, probably on par to slightly better than Barnes.
My “expert” couch-scouting originally had him right ahead of Bagley in my rankings:
Doncic
Ayton
Jackson
Bridges
Bagley
Young
I’d still love to get him.
Kevin Huerter got a 4/65 extension from the Hawks. That’s interesting to me.
That’s 20 million less overall in value than what hollinger thinks huerter will produce in that time. Did you think he would get more, less, or about that amount?
On the open market? Who knows.
As far as Hollinger’s money value rankings, that’s his opinion. Huerter is talented and I’m a fan, but I’m doubtful that many teams offer Huerter 4/80. If any. You don’t leave money on the table if you know it’s there. Huerter’s value is still unclear to many people. And that’s probably why he took the 4/65 from Atlanta. It’s guaranteed if nothing else.
Yeah, I think many players are very aware of the perils of getting Noel’s/Schroeder’d at this point. I like huerter too.
Huerter, Bogi and Gall all got $.
and Hunter
that leaves Reddish who I like more than Miles Bridges. Hmmm…………….
Reddish is interesting.
His defense is sure way ahead of his offensive game. His injury history and the logjam at the 3-4 is a real reason why I think he might be available for the right price for Atlanta. Very much worth trying to get.
For the right price, I’d agree.
Yeah, definitely. Kings only have so many assets other teams want.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHO I’VE WANTED THE KINGS TO GO AFTER SINCE HE WAS DRAFTED!!!
Please Monte! Bagley and several 2nd round picks for bridges!!! Why hasn’t this already been done? How does our GM not know this guy is that available?!?!? This actually frustrates me.
bridges is a very good fit on this team!! Very good.
Is there any way Kings fans can file a class-action lawsuit against Vlade Divac? He damaged us.
“Show us on the doll where Vlade touched you.”
The worst glory hole.
The Horry Hole.
That still stings.
I still remember it…especially the sound.
I was in Vancouver at the time, attending a year of college.
Roomed with a Canadian kid. He was just leaving the house, but stayed at the door while we watched the closing seconds of that game.
Horry hits the shot. My roommate yells “OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!” as I look on in silence, frozen like a statue.
He looks at me, shuts up, closes the door to leave.
…I’m left on the couch….frozen for the next 20 minutes. Simmering.
We need to get past 2002.
Once we finally get past .500, we can start to heal.
Not a chance in hell.
I was standing in the same spot in my living room that I was when Scott Spezio homered off of Rodriguez later that year. I orange coned that spot and sold the house two years later.
2002 – It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was a Dickens of a time.
Kings had a better extension two days ago.
This joke is so tired
its even been used in this thread already
We had a better joke two days ago.
sorry, i rarely read the comments anymore. it popped in my head while reading the article. i will refrain from using said joke again so that you can remain happy
If Bagley actually plays consecutive games maybe he creates value beyond dog shit.
If Bagley does what he is currently doing, the Kings should release him and get someone who might actually put a uniform on and play in a game.
Not being a smart ass….
Is Bagley’s latest “injury” a game he and his agent are playing to force an extension?
Give me an extension or I don’t play….
I don’t play and you lose value in me for a trade….
His “injury” makes zero sense from his perspective. If he wants to get traded he needs to move past his reputation for being soft. If he wants to get a contract he needs to defeat his reputation for being soft.
The whole thing is stupid at this point but maybe he is trying to leverage for an extension knowing he has very little value as a free agent?
