Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NBA. Each week, we send out questions to the most plugged in Sacramento Kings fans, and fans across the country. Sign up here to join Reacts.
The biggest craze in the NBA right now is the explosion of Top Shot. The collectible, blockchain-based highlight repository has attempted to combine the worlds of basketball trading cards and booming investments.
Tyrese Haliburton is one of Top Shot’s biggest fans. He got deep into it on Sacramento’s latest road trip and was giving out tips for which moments media members should try to buy, including a Buddy Hield reverse dunk over Mitchell Robinson, because he thinks Hield is never going to have a highlight like that again.
Haliburton explained his interest in Top Shot with J.J. Redick on “The Old Man and the Three” podcast, of which is he now a correspondent.
However, despite the increased coverage and huge amounts of money involved with NBA Top Shot, the average basketball fan doesn’t seem to care much at all. According to fans around the country, more than 90 percent of NBA fans said they don’t own a Top Shot.
Like the trading cards that predated Top Shot, there is a clash between if this new product is an investment meant to increase in worth and eventually be sold for more money, or a piece of memorabilia kept by fans to enjoy. According to more than three-fourths of fans, they think of Top Shot more as memorabilia than the expensive investment it appears to be right now.
Likely as a combination between the lack of ownership interest and seeing Top Shot more as memorabilia than anything else, fans don’t think this will last. This time next year, most NBA fans think the bubble will burst on the Top Shot fad.
On a less fun note, according to the most recent SB Nation Reacts survey, 0 percent of responding Kings fans are confident the team is headed in the right direction. That’s down from 23 percent last week and 60 percent two weeks ago.
If you want to see more Kings content included in SB Nation Reacts each week, we need Kings fans to jump into the fray. You can not only give your input on the NBA at large, but weigh in on how you think this team is doing each week.
