Kyle Guy drains buzzer-beater to give Kings second straight preseason win

Kyle Guy is making a strong case for minutes.

Where were you the night Kyle Guy became the face of the franchise? On Tuesday night, the second-year guard caught fire from behind the arc and drained six of his 10 3-point attempts, the last of which beat the buzzer to give the Sacramento Kings a 114-113 over the Golden State Warriors.

Even if Guy didn’t make the game winning 3-point shot, he would have been the story of the night for the Kings once again. Following an impressive 14-point outing against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday, Guy scored 20 points in 22:42, and on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting from the field. He’s led the Kings in scoring in each of their last two games.

Guy is currently on a two-way contract, but if he continues to show he can be a big-time shot-maker at the NBA level, the Kings would be wise to open up a full-time roster spot for him later in the season. If they don’t, they’ll still be able to match any offer for him in restricted free agency, but we saw how difficult restricted free agency can be just last month.

Overall, the Kings guards had a pretty solid night. Their starting back court of De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield combined for 35 points 12-of-27 shooting from the field. Meanwhile, Tyrese Haliburton had a few fun plays in the brief time he was on the court. There’s a lot to like about that trio of guards. If Walton can put them in positions to succeed this season, the Kings will be just fine in that respect this season.

The same can be said of the bigs. Marvin Bagley III and Hassan Whiteside made their preseason debuts on Tuesday, and while they definitely looked rusty at times, it’s already clear where they’re going to help the Kings this season.

The Kings are now 2-1 in preseason play. They’ll be back at it on Thursday to take on the Warriors once again. As long as Steph Curry doesn’t look as good as he did on Tuesday, the Kings should be able to end their preseason on a high note.
