Royal Reading: Should the Kings explore a trade for Jrue Holiday?

The numbers could work in a deal for Buddy Hield.

The 2020 NBA offseason is right around the corner. The Sacramento Kings and new general manager Monte McNair have just under six weeks left until the season begins, so the team will have some time to make moves that will help end the 14-year playoff drought.

With Buddy Hield reportedly not answering head coach Luke Walton’s calls, the first big move the Kings could make is a trade involving Hield. However, they’re not going to trade Hield just to trade him — they’re going to try and get the most value for him, and that could come from the New Orleans Pelicans.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Pelicans are shopping guard Jrue Holiday to other teams, and The Athletic’s Zach Harper shared why he thinks there could be a deal with Sacramento in a recent roundtable:

The key for McNair is putting the right pieces around Fox, who should take another step in his development. Holiday is due roughly $52 million over the next two years, so a trade for Hield will work under the salary cap, while also providing future financial flexibility with Hield having an extra two seasons on his deal.

The 30-year-old averaged 19.1 points and 6.7 assists while shooting 35.3% from deep last season. Holiday had a net rating of +0.5, the third-best on an average Pelicans team. New Orleans was 5.3 points better per 100 possessions with Holiday on the floor last season.

If McNair and Co. do want to move on from Hield, how do you think Holiday would fit with the Kings?

On to some links:

The Kings went national in hiring ESPN’s Mark Jones as the team’s new play-by-play man. Jones caught up with Jason Jones of The Athletic about why he took the job. He also did a Q&A with James Ham.

The 2020 NBA Draft is just nine days away. Krysten Peek of Yahoo released her latest mock draft and has the Kings taking a raw prospect at No. 12.

The Kings’ best defender in 2019-20 was Richaun Holmes. Holmes broke down some defensive film from the bubble with Leo Beas.
