Sacramento Kings assistant general manager and franchise legend Peja Stojakovic will join his boss and former teammate in stepping down from his position with the team, according to a report from Shams Charania of The Athletic on Saturday. Divac resigned from his position as the Kings general manager on Friday.

The Kings hired Stojakovic as their director of player personnel and development in August of 2015. He also served as the general manager of the Reno Bighorns (now the Stockton Kings) during that time. In the summer of 2018, Stojakovic was promoted to assistant general manager, a role that allowed him to be more involved in the day-to-day operations of their G League affiliate.

Stojakovic was hired when Divac was promoted to general manager, so it makes sense that they’re exiting the team at the same time. With Stojakovic gone, the Kings only have one assistant general manager in their front office: Ken Catanella, who the Kings hired as their assistant general manager in 2016.

Prior to joining the Kings, Catanella served in multiple roles in the Detroit Pistons front office, including the assistant general manager position, from 2011 to 2016. During a portion of that time, he worked under Joe Dumars, who has assumed the role of interim general manager since Divac’s resignation.

It’s likely that Dumars and Catanella will have bigger roles within the organization going forward, which, judging by their success in Detroit — particularly in the draft — might not be the best thing. However, the hope is that they’ll bring in an outsider with experience in an NBA front office to make things different than their run with the Pistons.

Suffice to say, the next few months are going to be interesting for the Kings — and by interesting, I mean really, really, really important.
