The Kings wasted little time after waiving Glenn Robinson III to fill their final roster spot, agreeing to terms with Norvel Pelle for a 10-day contract.

Pelle most recently appeared in the G League bubble with the Canton Charge, averaging 10.0 points (while making 70 percent of his shots), 10.7 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks in 24.3 minutes per game. He was previously under contract with the Brooklyn Nets and suited up for them at the start of February before being waived.

The Kings are down a few bodies in the frontcourt. Chimezie Metu will be out a few more weeks with a wrist injury, and both Hassan Whiteside and Jabari Parker are in the health and safety protocols. Sacramento can play both Marvin Bagley III and Nemanja Bjelica at center, but Pelle is a more natural 5. It would also be helpful to have another big for 5-on-5 in practice or shootarounds.

It would be easy to think of Pelle as an upside play since the Kings signed him out of the G League, but the new Sacramento center is already 28 years old. He debuted as a professional in 2013 with the Delaware 87ers and spent a few years overseas before returning stateside to the G League and a brief stint with the Philadelphia 76ers last season.

At 6’10, Pelle has been an efficient scorer in the paint in his non-NBA stops, but has not been quite as proficient in his 250 NBA minutes. For now, his contract is basically set to run until the end of the first half of the season. That means this is likely just a depth signing before Whiteside and Metu return. There probably won’t be any practices on this road trip, so Pelle will be thrown right into the fire if he does play.
