De’Aaron Fox will represent the Kings at the 2020 NBA Draft Lottery

This is Fox’s second time in this role.

The Kings are doubling down on their recent lottery luck.

After sending De’Aaron Fox to the 2018 NBA Draft Lottery and being rewarded with the No. 2 pick in one of the better drafts in recent memory, Sacramento is revisiting that formula. Fox will once again be the team’s representative in the lottery, though instead of traveling to Chicago and sitting on the dais while deputy commissioner Mark Tatum opens a series of envelopes — seriously, I cannot overemphasize how much I love the theater of the lottery — Fox will be virtually present during this year’s broadcast.

Three teams have now confirmed that they will be represented by their franchise point guard. In addition to the Kings, Golden State is being repped by Stephen Curry, and Minnesota will have D’Angelo Russell as its virtual representative.

The lottery order will be revealed from the league offices in Secaucus, New Jersey. ESPN has sent camera kits to each team, and hopefully the broadcast quality is better than when ESPN televised H-O-R-S-E during the start of the hiatus. The subsequent success of the WNBA and NFL Drafts, however, does augur an improved viewing experience.

The Kings currently have the 12th-best lottery odds, by virtue of winning the coin flip tiebreaker with the New Orleans Pelicans. Sacramento has a 1.3% chance of moving up to the first overall pick and a 6.1% chance of moving into the lottery, i.e. the top four picks. The Kings haven’t selected first overall since 1989, when they drafted Pervis Ellison out of Louisville. This draft doesn’t have a no-brainer no. 1 pick, but moving up in the draft order would at least give the Kings another asset to use as they continue to work towards making the playoffs.
