Bogdan Bogdanovic signs four-year, $72 million offer sheet from Hawks

The Kings have 48 hours to match.

Bogdan Bogdanovic has signed a four-year offer sheet from the Altanta Hawks worth $72 million over four years, according to a report from Marc Stein of The New York Times on Sunday. Sam Amick of The Athletic was the first to report that Bogdanovic signed the offer sheet. The Kings have 48 hours to match.

On the surface, a four-year, $72 million wouldn’t be that difficult for the Kings to match. After all, that’s just a base salary of $18 million, and according to Stein, Bogdanovic can opt out of his contract in the fourth year. But the Hawks did everything they could to make sure the Kings think twice before matching their offer for Bogdanovic.

According to Stein, the offer sheet that Bogdanovic signed with the Kings includes a 15% trade kicker, meaning that if the Kings decided to match the Hawks’ offer sheet, they’d have to pay Bogdanovic that bonus in order to trade him somewhere else down the line. Additionally, if the Kings wanted to trade Bogdanovic this season, they’d have to do it with his consent because matching an offer sheet for a restricted free agent triggers a one-year no-trade clause for the player.

Suffice to say, the Kings have a lot to think about over the next 48 hours, but ultimately the conclusion that they should come to is that they’re better off matching the offer sheet. Bogdanovic might not want to be in Sacramento anymore, but having a disgruntled player in the locker room for a few months isn’t as bad as losing a valuable asset for nothing. Again, $18 million isn’t an unreasonable price tag for Bogdanovic — they should be able to flip him.

If the Kings don’t match the Hawks’ offer sheet for Bogdanovic, it will mark the second time they’ve lost an asset for nothing this offseason. The first time was when they lost Harry Giles for nothing, although that was the former front office’s fault, not Monte McNair’s.

Even if the Kings are headed for a full-on rebuild, which seems to be the case, losing assets for the sake of starting fresh isn’t good practice. They really need to match here.
