The Sacramento Kings have picked up the fourth-year option on Marvin Bagley III that will pay the forward $11.3 million next season, per Jason Jones of The Athletic. The 2018 No. 2 overall pick dealt with injury issues last season, which limited him to just 13 games.

Bagley was productive during his short time on the court, averaging 14..2 points and 7.5 rebounds while playing 25.7 minutes per game. The 21-year-old suffered a thumb injury in October 2019, which caused him to sit out through the league’s coronavirus shutdown.

Bagley joined the Kings in Orlando for the NBA’s restart, but disaster struck during a team practice when he hurt his foot, causing him to miss Sacramento’s eight games in the bubble.

It will be interesting to see how head coach Luke Walton uses Bagley this season. The Kings are looking to play at a faster pace this season, and with Bagley’s size, he should see some time at both power forward and center.

With Alex Len and Harry Giles departing in free agency, general manager Monte McNair signed veterans Hassan Whiteside and Frank Kaminsky to help bolster the frontcourt. Bagley will be battling Whiteside, Kaminsky and the returning Richaun Holmes for minutes.

Sacramento struggled during Bagley’s time with the team last season, winning just two of the 13 games he played in. The Kings were 11.7 points better per 100 possessions with Bagley off the floor.

The elephant in the room with Bagley remains his draft position. He was picked one spot ahead of MVP candidate Luke Doncic and has failed to live up to the expectations that come with being a No. 2 pick.

Sacramento has a cornerstone piece in point guard De’Aaron Fox, and the organization is hopeful Bagley will begin to show glimpses of the player he can be during his three seasons in the league.

Bagley will have to improve his outside shooting for the Kings to be able to spread the floor when he is on the court. He connected on only 4-of-22 3-point attempts during the 2019-20 campaign, far below the 31.3 percent he shot during his rookie year.

This will be a transition season for Sacramento, with McNair hoping to keep some financial flexibility going forward. But, if Bagley begins to play to his potential, the general manager will have two young core pieces on the roster as he tries to develop the Kings into a perennial contender.
