As expected, we won’t see Joe Johnson in a Kings uniform.

The Sacramento Kings have reached a buyout agreement with Joe Johnson, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The buyout was expected as soon as Thursday’s trade was announced. The deal allows Johnson to sign with a contender, and he appears poised to join the Houston Rockets for the remainder of the year according to various reports.

Johnson is a $10.5 million expiring contraxt. He’ll still be on the Kings salary cap for the remainder of the year, but the buyout allows the Kings to pay less than what he’s owed for the remainder of the season while also allowing Johnson to pursue other opportunities. The buyout was likely completed using some or all of the cash received in Thursday’s trade.

This means the Kings have an additional open roster spot. They could bring up JaKarr Sampson for the remainder of the year, or try to find players via 10-day contracts. We’ll see how they fill the roster in the coming days and weeks.
