Success and the Sacramento Kings haven’t been synonymous when it comes to the NBA Draft. From missing out on Luca Doncic, to passing up on Steph Curry, the franchise has made its fair share of draft blunders over the years.

Luckily, the SB Nation NBA team put together a redraft where we were given an opportunity to redeem the Kings’ picks. Last week, we re-did the 2014, 2015 and 2016 draft, now let’s go back even further and redo Sacramento’s 2019, 2010 selections.

Here are the results:

2009

Original pick: Tyreke Evans (No. 4 overall)

New pick: Jrue Holiday

Evans came out of the gate on fire his first year, becoming just the fourth rookie in league history to average more than 20 points, five rebounds and five assists on his way to winning NBA Rookie of the Year. Sacramento went 25-57 that year, but looked like it had a cornerstone piece in place. That sentiment changed in the coming years.

A mix of injuries, commitment issues and a lack of development in his overall game, derailed his career in the early stages. Evans wasn’t exactly known for taking care of himself and although he was great at getting to the rim, his lack of 3-point shooting was a major concern. Evans was dealt to the New Orleans Pelicans after just four seasons with the Kings.

Holiday could have come in and learned behind Beno Udrih during his rookie season. He developed into a 2013 All-Star and would have given Sacramento a long-term answer at the point guard spot.

2010

Original pick: DeMarcus Cousins (No. 5 overall)

New pick: Derrick Favors

The Kings got lucky at the 2010 Draft due to Evan Turner, Favors and Wesley Johnson being taken ahead of Boogie. There is no doubt about Cousins’ talent, but his attitude and temper made his time with Sacramento a tumultuous one. Cousins was a double-double machine, averaging 21.8 points and 10.9 rebounds over his tenure, but the Kings never won more than 33 games over his six-plus seasons in Sacramento.

Although he didn’t develop into being worth of where he was selected, Favors turned into a solid pro after being traded from the New Jersey Nets to the Utah Jazz during his rookie year. Favors peaked during years four and five, where he averaged more than 16 points and 8 rebounds a game. The other option here is Eric Bledsoe, but with Holiday’s selection the year prior, it made sense to go with a power forward here.

Bobby Jackson was an integral part of the early 2000s Kings teams. The former NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award winner, and current Kings player development coach, caught up with CBS Sacramento’s Sara Hodges about the Kings opening up their practice facility.

Sacramento will have some decisions to make in free agency when it comes to its big men. James Ham of NBC Sports says a a current Toronto Raptor would be an ideal signing in the offseason.
