The Sacramento Kings are reportedly interested in bringing in Alvin Gentry to join head coach Luke Walton’s staff.

Jason Jones of The Athletic tweeted out this after ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said new Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doc Rivers is wanting to hire Gentry as an assistant.

The 65-year-old Gentry was fired by the New Orleans Pelicans after a disappointing showing in the bubble. Gentry led the Pelicans to the playoffs once in five seasons, finishing with a record of 175-225. He has an overall head coaching record of 510 and 595.

Walton and Gentry won a championship together as assistants with the Golden State Warriors during the 2014-15 season, so the familiarity is there. Gentry is known as an offensive-minded coach, who should bring some imagination to the Kings’ offense if he agrees to join the staff.

Sacramento’s offense became stale for long stretches of games during the season. The lack of ball-and-player movement made the Kings easy to defend against. Gentry ran a system in New Orleans that was predicated on transition offense and quick passes. The Pelicans were fourth in the NBA at 103.89, 15 spots higher than Sacramento. New Orleans struggled on the defensive end up Gentry, finishing no higher than 14th in defensive rating over the past three seasons.

New general Monte McNair and the coaching staff will continue to fine tune the organization as they try and end the franchise’s NBA-leading 14 year playoff drought.

It remains to be seen where Gentry will end up, but he would be a welcome addition to Walton’s staff.
