The Sacramento Kings selected Davion Mitchell with the No. 9 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft on Thursday. Mitchell was projected to go 13th overall to the Indiana Pacers in SB Nation’s mock draft.
Mitchell, who spent his sophomore and junior seasons at Baylor, is one of the oldest players in the draft. Mitchell will turn 23 years old in September.
The Kings’ decision to pick an older player in Mitchell suggests they wanted to pick someone with the potential to contribute right away, but given their lack of size on the wing and lack of a true star talent outside of De’Aaron Fox, the pick is definitely questionable.
That being said, Mitchell certainly has the talent to warrant a top-10 selection, particularly on the defensive end. In his junior season at Baylor, Mitchell was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, in large part because he averaged 1.9 steals per game, the second-most in the conference.
Offensively, he expanded his game in his junior season with a reliable 3-point jump shot. In his sophomore season, Mitchell shot 32.4% from 3-point range. In his junior season, he shot 44.7% from 3-point range on 4.7 attempts per game. At worst, he’s a 3-and-D wing. At best, he’s a dynamic two-way scorer.
The biggest concern with Mitchell is whether his 3-point shot is legit and those concerns are heightened by the fact that he’s a bad free-throw shooter. In his three collegiate seasons, Mitchell shot 65.7% from behind the arc.
Mitchell should get every opportunity to prove himself with the Kings, especially if Buddy Hield is on his way out, but given the players that Monte McNair passed on, it will be disappointing if he doesn’t look at least semi-good right away.
