With 45.3% of the vote, Moses Moody got the 7th spot on the Kings Herald Draft Board and Bryant can finally breathe easy. He joins Jonathan Kuminga, Scottie Barnes, Jalen Suggs, Jalen Green, Evan Mobley and Cade Cunningham.
When a choice comes up, pick who you’d want the Kings to pick given all the players remaining. Note: THIS IS NOT A MOCK DRAFT. This is a draft board, a ranked list of prospects you’d like to see the Kings pick. In other words, if we were the Kings front office, when our pick came up, we’d take the top name left on our board. So pick your choice, not who you think Monte McNair or anyone else would choose in a slot.
Explain your choice in the comments, and lobby for who should be added to the next pick’s choices.
This poll ends at 7 AM tomorrow. The next one will begin shortly after. We will go roughly 20 picks deep.
This is where it gets tough. There are several prospects I can very much understand here. I’d go with Jalen Johnson personally but it’s a toss-up between him, Franz and Ziaire for me.
This is the point where I become more inclined to swing from the heels, so I chose Sengun, although had Ziaire been listed, I’d have waffled a bit.
HEY, WHO WANTS WAFFLES
Waffles… my two year old wakes up saying “daddy I want waffles” and goes to bed 12 hours later muttering the same thing.
When my daughter was about that age, she used to ask for “awfuls.” Still cracks me up.
She’ll be a Kings fan for sure.
Huh. I didn’t hear my cousin say anything that I could recognize as words until she was 3.
We have two little girls…who will undoubtedly be dragged into Kings fandom – but that’s neither here nor there. Anyways, as I was saying, we have a one year old and a 2.5 year old. The 2.5 year old had no words at 18 months. Between 18 mo and 24 mo, her speech exploded. Now at 2.5, she has full conversations and getting her to shut up is the trick. All kids are different. While development is fascinating in and of itself, they all develop differently.
Yeah, my cousin went quickly from not saying recognizable words to being hard to shut up (though she didn’t always have full conversations when she was 3 b/c she didn’t know the words she wanted to use & she was less talkative the last few times I saw her as a 5 year old).
This made me laugh so hard
This is the correct choice.
Sengun should’ve been selected two picks ago, imo.
Other than Cade, Mobley and Greene, he’s the one I would draft. I can see an argument for Kuminga and Keon going ahead of Sengun, but I think it’s about even. I just think Sengun has the higher floor.
At the very least, Sengun should be good on offense. However, I worry about his defense & I think defense is more important than offense for bigs (esp. on a team like the Kings).
Agree defense is a concern. But he’s also young and if he facilitates that much more on offense, try to mask his flaws? Everyone at this point in the draft has warts. I also think we’re caught up in the aftermath of having a historically bad defense, so it’s a legit concern, but also a coaching change and growth from our young guys should help improve that side of the floor.
You could’ve clicked on other & written Ziaire’s name in.
Now is when I begin to waver between BPA and fit. I can’t say for certain that Bouknight, Sengun, Mitchell, or anyone is BPA so fit for the roster has creeped into my choices. From that Bouknight is just so redundant with the current roster. Should Buddy, TD, or Wright get moved or not return prior to draft night then I could rationalize picking him, but the Kings are too much in need for lengthy wings and bigs (especially if Holmes is not returning).
Long story short, I’m picking Wagner. Not incredibly happy about it, but not too upset either.
Wagner is the Honda Civic of this draft: nobody is impressed by it but it’ll reliably get you where you need to go.
That’s kind of where I’m at at this point in the draft. Sure, the Kings could swing for the fences for someone like Sengun or Keon Johnson, but I just want a reliable basketball player that helps to improve the team. I just don’t think there is going to be a star outside the top 5 picks.
I’ve come around to the idea the Kings should pick Ziaire at #9 just because of how bereft of high-caliber talent this roster is. I’ll take a strikeout and swing for the fences again in ’22 if I have to, but this team can’t just keep foregoing opportunities to get the BPA. But if it’s not Ziaire, I like Wagner as the low-risk and Sengun as the medium-risk options. We should be able to get a role-playing forward at #39 with Edwards, Jones and Murphy III floating around so may as well roll the dice when you have the chance.
And yet, statistically speaking, there almost certainly will be.
I agree. My preference is that the Kings draft a player that is likely to contribute for the majority of their rookie contract. Waiting three years before getting quality minutes out of this pick could lead to another leadership transition and a continuation of the endless rebuild.
Unfortunately, it only drives right.
If this doesn’t have two dozen upvotes by noon Pacific time, everyone in this bank will die.
I have a very busy morning.
At least it’s able to drive (unlike Hield).
I enjoy this comp (especially as a man who owned a Civic), but I also don’t see how no one is impressed. How are we not impressed by a 6’10 dude with his shoot/dribble/pass/defend on the perimeter combination? Just because he doesn’t dunk?
Same reason that nobody is impressed by an affordable, fuel-efficient sedan with top-rate safety features that can run 250,000 miles before it starts showing significant wear – it doesn’t dunk.
That combo is why I think he’s the 7th best prospect in the draft (behind the guys who went in TKH’s top 6).
So far, Wagners in the NBA have been lemons.
Franz is a SIGNIFICANTLY more complete prospect out of college than his brother ever was.
And Honus was pretty good at baseball!
Richard was pretty good at music!
Yeah, he’s had a bit of a resurgence with certain types over the past decade.
I’m much more impressed by a vehicle with all the latest bells and whistles, including major dunking ability, even if it breaks down constantly and the onboard navigation system whines passive-aggressively about not getting driven around more.
A Cadillac Bagley, in other words.
BREAKING: KINGS DRAFT A HONDA CIVIC. LITERALLY.
We’ve made worse decisions!
Ahem. The GMC Pappagiannis we drafted in 2016 would like a word with you.
LOL ain’t that the truth. Drafting a Honda Civic wouldn’t even be the worst transaction of this franchise.
Will Bagley drive it to Phoenix and keep it in the driveway for the duration of his stay? That poor paint job.
This is the most apt description of Wagner I have yet heard.
Agreed Adam. At this point I think I would hope the team picks a smart and skilled player, and let him find his way. I think Mitchell, Giddey, and Bouknight are really interesting picks, but I would probably pick a player with size and skill like Sengun or Wagner and let them find their way.
Nice pick. For me, Mitchell, Bouknight and Sengun (in no particular order) fill out this tier of players, which is tier two. Tier one is Cade, Mobley, Green.
What tier do you have Suggs, Reynolds & Kuminga in?
Kuminga is the same tier. Suggs would be my #4 pick, but I don’t want to create a tier just for him. Who is the other draft prospect?
The other prospect is Scottie Reynolds.
Based on comments from many of MB3’s critics, we can expect an uproar if it turns out that Reynolds wraps!
Oh, you mean Scottie Barnes. Yeah, Barnes is in the same tier. I personally think he’s overrated. I would not be surprised if either he or Kuminga fall to 9. Suggs won’t fall to 9.
I’m surprised I haven’t read something along these lines sooner here, but I 100% agree that someone unexpected will be there at 9, eerily similar to Hali at 12 last year. And my money is on it being Kuminga.
Oh duh. I’m not sure why I wrote Reynolds instead of Barnes. At this point, I wouldn’t necessarily be surprised if Kuminga fell to #9, but I’d be surprised if Barnes fell to #9.
Depends on your roster. If your shooting guard is not a ball handler and your point guard likes to play off the ball, then I can see how Scottie would help. Otherwise, it’s a difficult fit. He still does not have a way of getting buckets. I suppose you’d be hoping he figures out some way to put the ball in the basket but that’s not a given. So it comes down to his defense which I think is overrated. He’s not a post defender like Draymond and a quick wing will cook him all night. So although he might be an above average defender, I don’t think his defense is elite. It’s mostly a case of good marketing.
Bouknight again. Once Hield and TD are gone, he can have free reign with the 2nd unit to provide that scoring. Sengun was close as the roster needs size as well
Totally off topic but I’ve recently discovered this guy and his videos. FYI, he is a Pistons fan. I love his rambling about basketball stuff and have been actively seeking out his content. Just wanted to share. Here is his latest:
Here he goes into a monologue about Bagley.
Seen his recently too. Funny stuff.
I was wondering whatever happened to Adam Morrison.
That’s a cool shirt!
Eenie, meenie, miny, mo time
Mo went off the board yesterday.
Someone tell me, who of this group is the biggest home run swing? Bouknight? Sengun? Johnson?
I don’t know who to vote for anymore lol
At eight, I’d say Sengun or Smith. You’re putting all your chips on these guys living up to their considerable potential.
Smith?
Williams. You know, Smith.
I chose Bouknight for this one.
I am kind of coming around on Corey Kispert. He can shoot, has the size to be our 3, I enjoyed seeing highlights of him relocating/shifting with ballhandlers, his athletic ability is servicable, and his dribbling/handling actually doesnt look bad. He also looks like a good structured passer.
Not sure on his defense but would need to see more. I can see a Pat Conaughton, Joe Harris, or my favorite comp, Mike Miller.
Can we just redraft Skal?
You will never be able to convince me that he is not a star that just needs an opportunity! 😉
Time to punt!
Trade the pick!
Keon Johnson and his crazy athleticism for me. Walton will hold his development back, but he’ll be fun to watch in the slam dunk contest.
MOODY MOB VICTORY!
Franz Wagner is my pick here. I always hear that Franz is this jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none player, but given that he’s a 6’9, 6’10 player with positive shooting indicators, really strong defensive instincts and potential switchability, and great playmaking instincts for his size, I just don’t get that that is a negative. A dude at his size with the dribble-pass-shoot-defend combination is undervalued in that master of none label – those guys are pretty damn hard to find at this level.
Now, if I have a concern with Franz, it’s that he’s not a dude that plays with great confidence on offense. He shares Tyrese Haliburton’s instincts that, well, my teammates will probably get a better shot here than I will. I’m pretty damn worried about his confidence level and if he’ll ever be a “DUDE”. But that’s one of those things that those of us who just watch tape and don’t talk to coaches/players/staff can’t really speak too much on.
I’m tempted to pick Jalen Johnson, but he’ll be my next vote.
Excellent points and sums up the reasons I picked him. He has the Mikal Bridges/Josh Huerter/Kyle Anderson vide to me. Nothing exception but solid all around.
In all honesty I kind of see a younger version of Harrison Barnes. Looking at both of the their college numbers, it might even be argued that Wagner looks like the better prospect than Barnes did as a sophomore.
A reason I like Wagner and Kispert is because they know their roles/strengths as supporting players. I def see the Kyle Anderson in Wagner but I also see some Danilo Gallinari.
Maybe drafting Wagner would slide HB to the 3 because right now, I see Wagner as a 4. If he has quicker feet defensively then it appears, that would be great.
Curious as I’ve seen this comp somewhere else. Assume Wagner hits this comp of Kyle Andersen.
If he were in this draft and you knew how his career would turn out, would you draft Kyle Andersen with the 9th pick in this draft?
I’m not saying there is a right or wrong, just differing philosophies probably between people. I won’t be mad if the Kings draft Wagner, bc I see the appeal. But I probably would prefer a bigger swing on a talent with a higher ceiling.
I think if you knew you’d be getting a Kyle Anderson with the #9 you do it without hesitation. He’s a starter in this league that does nothing exceptional but so many things right. FWIW, I think Wagner projects to be better than Anderson. He’s faster, more athletic, and better defensively.
Another comp I saw elsewhere was Lamar Odom. If he can become a Gallinari meets Odom type of player you definitely take him at #9
I get it. He didn’t become a starter until Year 4 (good team obviously) and this was the first year he averaged over 8 pts. PER has been 12 or less in 5 of 7 years. Low usage tho. This was the first year he really “broke out” and really added the 3 to his game and it’s year 7.
Always very good defensive player though and good advanced defensive numbers. Which the Kings need. It makes some sense.
Agree Gallinari/Odom would be an automatic.
I am probably dating my fandom, but I see some Bobby Jones of 76’ers fame. Long, athletic, versatile defensively, high motor, can contribute offensively in a secondary role. I think Wagner, like Bridges and Anderson, or Odom or Schrempf, can come in and help any team, but a very good fit for the Kings.
Great article this AM in The Athletic abt upcoming FA’s and their expected value. They have Holmes at $18.3M…ouch. One name they mentioned in there that intrigued me was Daniel Theis if we lost Holmes. Might be had at a decent value and provides some muscle in the middle.
Theis would be a nice fit, and defenses would need to keep track of him outside the paint. A solid option as a stopgap at the four, and could likely be had at a fair salary. Ideally, you acquire someone to supplant him sooner rather than later.
$18.3M? Thanks Richaun, go get that money form someone else.
Yeah, if someone offers him that it’s an overpay and he is definitely gone.
I’d just be happy for the guy if he only gets 75% of that figure. Eh, I’ll be happy for him regardless, he’s the best.
Same. I hope he gets that 18 million figure or better.
I’m voting for Wagner once again.
Sengun is the BPA in my opinion. Make it happen monte and this also works with the f word as well as I just think the overall talent and proven skills at a pro level are too good to pass up.
it’s like I’ve written that last part before sometime¦.hmm wonder when.
It’s upside flyer time. I went with Kai Jones from Texas.
