2020 Kings Herald Draft Board: Pick No. 10

Obi Toppin is off the board. Who will go next?
By | 31 Comments | Nov 12, 2020

With 45.1% of the vote, Obi Toppin is off the board.  He joins Anthony Edwards, James Wiseman, Deni Avdija, Killian Hayes, Tyrese Haliburton, LaMelo Ball, Isaac Okoro and Onyeka Okongwu.

When a choice comes up, pick who you’d want the Kings to pick given all the players remaining.  Note: THIS IS NOT A MOCK DRAFT. This is a draft board, a ranked list of prospects you’d like to see the Kings pick. In other words, if we were the Kings front office, when our pick came up, we’d take the top name left on our board. So pick your choice, not who you think Monte McNair or anyone else would choose in a slot.

Explain your choice in the comments, and lobby for who should be added to the next pick’s choices.

Patrick Williams. I like the size and potential to be an impactful player on both ends.

POKU!

Best chance to be a franchise changing talent. Now, I didn’t say a good chance. Just the best of chance of the options. Followed by Williams.

Who wouldn’t want a passing Center, the next Vlade. But, the Kings need a starting Power Forward.

They need impact playmakers. Regardless of position.

I voted Vassell – I think that he could be a legit 3-D wing. I have written previously about how well I think that Kira Lewis fits the roster, but Vassell (and maybeeeee Patrick Williams) are the only players left that I would take before Lewis.

Agreed. His 3-D possibilities are why I picked Vassell. Honestly, he may have gone a slot or two higher if I had not seen his new and ugly trebuchet jumpshot.

I don’t believe that. I seriously he would’ve posted joke shots online w/o a clear indication that they were joke shots.

Lacking context, that video gives me zero concern. And when compared to his body of work, it seems to border on the ludicrous. The guy went 70-168 (42%) from beyond the college arc. I’ll take that over the aforementioned social media snippet.

Given the precedent w/Fultz having shooting problems after a video showed him using an awful new shot during the pre-draft process, I’m going to treat the new shot as the most accurate representation of Vassell’s current shot.

Fultz was also injured to the extent that he required surgery. I call this about as far from an apples-to-apples scenario as you can get.

Vassell’s new shot worries me. I think Nesmith’s more like to be a 3&D wing (though I think Vassell will be a better defender).

It amazes me that 15 seconds of a non-cotextualized video qualifies as Vassell’s “new shot.” What’s next, the GM has a beef with his dad?

The only times I remember seeing videos of prospects showing off alarming new shots are Fultz & Vassell. It turned out poorly w/Fultz, so that makes me worried about Vassell. I’ve never heard of a GM passing on a prospect b/c of a beef w/the player’s dad, but that’d be idiotic.

The video only worries me if the shots weren’t going in. :p

OT: Kevin O’Connor’s new mock has Saddiq Bey going at #11 to the Spurs, who apparently love him! He spitballs Poku to the Kings without any rumor to back it up. Vassell. has dropped to #13. I’ve been enjoying Kevin’s mocks.

FYI, in terms of the Spurs, the last true lottery pick they had was Tim Duncan in 1997. The last time they traded for someone “close” to the lottery was Kawhi Leonard at #15. IMO, if they are possibly reaching for Bey, it says something.

The Beys look awesome (I’ll also shout out Tyler here as well). Saddiq looks more intriguing every time I watch him and I think he could end up a top-5 guy in this draft when all said is done. I also think that there’s a large possibility that he ends up a bench role player. It will all come down to the team that selects him. San Antonio will be a terrific spot for him to land.

It was like he got to the Kings and said “welp, I don’t know or care” and just went to the big board and selected the guy he had at 12.

Yeah, I don’t understand people rating Bey in the 20s. He may be a jack of all trades type, but he’s not a master of none. 45% 3pt shooting on high volume with his size seems like it would give him an incredibly high floor for someone rated outside the top-10.

The latest mock I saw on The Athletic had Vassell going to the Kings.

Vassell is generally falling a bit in the mocks. Often to the Kings. Sometimes even a bit farther.

Vassell will be a better pro than Toppin and Okungwu. He should be higher on big boards and certainly higher on the Kings board. He meets the needs of the team and could be a vital piece of the core. Toppin looks pretty awesome in offense, but is a horrific defender. Okungwu looks like a solid career bench big to me. He’s just overrated, yet safe.

Take a flyer on Poku. Even if he stays in Europe for another one or two years, given that the team won’t contend anytime soon, why not?

One underrated aspect of drafting Poku and stashing him in Europe is the salary and roster spot if opens up for the Kings. The #12 pick gets around $3.8M their first year and the Kings already have a relatively full roster, and that doesn’t count their 3 2nd round picks. It may be a wise long term move to draft and stash Poku and keep your eyes set on the 2021 draft.

Patrick Williams – brings it on the defensive end around the rim and lots of potential for his offensive game. We could either pick to develop him as a paint or 3 point specialist.

Once again, it’s Nesmith due to his shooting & defensive potential.

Voted for Patrick Williams, but should’ve voted for Saddiq Bey. My official mid-lottery draft crush. I’ve watched more highlights of him than any other player.

Kira if they don’t get a deal done for CP3 but assuming they do they have to go with Vassell

Same for Kings, tho for me Vassell fits too important a role as a versatile defender.
