Sacramento Kings center Kosta Koufos is going to opt in to the final year of his contract, according to Chris Haynes of ESPN. The final year of Kosta’s contract is for $8.7 million, which is actually a very reasonable price for a player like Koufos.

This comes as a bit of a surprise. A veteran like Kosta could reasonably expect a solid, multi-year contract in free agency, but he apparently feels its better to spend another year with the Kings. Koufos was one of the Kings most reliable players last season, and it’s a welcome surprise that he’ll return.
This shouldn’t impact the Kings draft plans, but could impact free agency goals from both a need and a salary cap perspective.
This news means the Kings have Koufos, Willie Cauley-Stein, Skal Labissiere, Zach Randolph, and Harry Giles in the front court. It’s hard to imagine the Kings entering the season with all five bigs in the rotation, and perhaps this news prompts additional roster moves like a trade or stretching a player like Randolph.
