Kings 121, Grizzlies 111 (OT): Monk saves the day

The Kings lost Kevin Huerter early and the lead late, but stormed back in overtime to dispatch the scrappy Grizzlies behind an instant classic from Malik Monk.

SACRAMENTO — Whatever the final score ended up being Monday night, the story was going to be Kevin Huerter. The Kings’ guard went down in a heap after being fouled by Desmond Bane on a fast break opportunity just 1:51 into the game against the Grizzlies, going from the floor to the locker room with what would later be called a left shoulder injury.

Huerter would not return to the game, and the energy reflected that of a team down a starter; the air was sucked out of the game and the arena until a late run by Sacramento in the second quarter that put the home team up double-digits.

But the Grizzlies, short-handed though they may be, still possess some of that Grind City mentality, and refused to go away quietly behind the efforts of Desmond Bane – in his second game back from an injury that had cost him most of 2024 – and Jaren Jackson, Jr, who put together a well-rounded game of his own.

Bane did much of his damage from the charity stripe; just 7-19 from the field, he connected on all eight of his free throw attempts at every King that attempted to slow him down found themselves sending him to the line.

But despite his heroics, his team trailed by 10 at the break, 57-47.

The third quarter saw Sacramento’s lead grow to as many as 12 and shrink to as few as one, until a 68 second De’Aaron Fox flurry from three saw it settle at 84-76. Fox drilled three straight from behind the arc as the third wound down, only to see Memphis answer each of his makes with a score of their own. In the third, Domantas Sabonis achieved his 50th straight double-double on a night when he would finish with 25/18/5. He is just the 10th player in NBA history to put together a streak of 50 or more double-doubles. It’s almost taken for granted at this point, but the greatness of Domas does not go unnoticed by his teammates or coaches, as has been made clear time and time again in post game press conferences. Post Grizzlies game, Coach Brown wanted to focus on his effort on defense against one of the best young players in the league.

“I thought Domas was really, really good on Jaren Jackson,” Brown said. “He’s an elite player – you’re not going to stop him, you just want to make it difficult on him. I thought Domas did that tonight.”

He also talked about Sabonis’ streak, and how it’s becoming almost expected from him.

He cares a ton. His effort is unmatched when it comes to rebounding the ball especially,” Brown said. “After being around him, and coaching him, and watching him, you understand how he can get as many double-doubles as he has gotten in a row. He’s just the type of player.”

The defense set the tone to start the fourth though, with Sacramento forcing a shot clock violation on the Grizzlies’ first possession — only to see Memphis repay the favor on their ensuing opportunity. A sequence early in the final frame seemed to get the Kings back on track though; Keon Ellis managed to block Bane on the rim at one end, leading to a Fox run out that ended with him flipping the ball over his head to Malik Monk who finished the highlight-level alley-oop.

The Grizzlies trailed by seven after that bucket, but every time it appeared Sacramento was poised to run away, the Griz stormed back.

A Sabonis three point play with 7:21 to play put the Kings up nine, but just over a minute later Memphis was back within three after three fouls, two missed shots, and a turnover by the Kings. After a 1-2 trip from the line for Sabonis, John Konchar slammed home an offensive rebound to bring Memphis within two. The teams traded turnovers, with Fox’s miscue leading to a game-tying Bane layup with less than five to play, and Fox repaying the favor with a goaltending aided layup of his own after a Jaren Jackson turnover to put his team back on top.

With 3:30 remaining and Sacramento up 99-97, the Grizzlies called a timeout. Keon Ellis would force a turnover out of the break, but the Kings would miss the ensuing shot attempt leading to a pair of Santi Aldama free throws that tied things up at 99. Sabonis responded with two from the stripe a possession later, as the teams once again traded buckets.

Ellis bottled up Bane to force a difficult shot on one end, but the Kings couldn’t capitalize on the other. and Sabonis grabbed a handful of jersey against Jaren Jackson, who tied the game for the third time in a three minute span. Memphis would take their first lead since the first quarter with an Aldama layup with less than a minute to play, and after Murray missed two free throws, Monk would throw down his third monster dunk of the game, an opportunity given to him thanks to Ellis’ offensive rebound.

Unfortunately for Sacramento, Bane went right back to work, driving for a layup that put his team on top 105-103 with 33.4 to play.

Out of a timeout, Fox hit a signature elbow jumper despite nearly losing the ball, and with time running down, GG Jackson missed a long two to send the game to overtime.

It was an auspicious start to OT, as Fox air balled a three and Jackson responded on the other end. Malik Monk somehow managed to will one in in the paint after an Aldama miss, and Sabonis drew a charge on Jackson leading to another Monk bucket, this one a long two, that put Sacramento back on top. Ellis did solid work to help force a shot clock violation on Memphis’ next possession, and Monk made it a four point lead with his third straight made bucket.

A successful Mike Brown challenge on a ball out of bounds led to yet another Monk bucket, as he made it eight straight in OT and 24 on the game. After another Memphis miss, Monk fed Sabonis for an easy dunk, and the Kings went up 115-107 with 1:09 to play.

“I feed off negative energy, I feed off positive energy, just energy man,” Monk said of his explosion. “That’s what makes me come alive.”

Marcus Smart, on the bench with an injury, was ejected from the game with a double technical, leading to free throws for Monk to give him 26 and give the Kings a ten point lead. That was enough to set the “Light the Beam” chants off in the arena, as Sacramento cruised to the victory.

“It was great for us,” Fox said of Monk’s OT effort. “He’s done it before; it was big for us at the end of the fourth and that overtime period. We just continued to feed the hot hand; him being able to start and finish plays is great for us.”

Monk would finish with a game-high 28 for Sacramento, including 12 in over time. The Kings also got double-digit performances from Sabonis (25), Fox (23), Murray (15), and Barnes (11). Memphis was led by Jaren Jackson’s 25, Bane’s 24, and GG Jackson’s 22. The Grizzlies shot just 38% from the field and 33% from three — including just 5-24 from deep after the first quarter. The Kings were once again tough on the defensive end, led by the energy and effort of Ellis (7 rebounds, 5 blocks and a steal) and Alex Len (2 blocks, 3 rebounds, and 6 points in 13 minutes).

Monk was complimentary of Ellis after the game. “I don’t [get] surprised with Keon – that’s what he does. Keon’s great. A great professional, too.”

“He’s getting more comfortable out there,” Fox added. “Playing heavier minutes, guarding some of the best players in the world. He did a hell of a job tonight.”

A road trip awaits Sacramento as they’ll play their next three away from the friendly confines before a matchup with the 76ers a week from tonight, the start of a five game home stretch that could go a long way for playoff seeding.

“To finish this last little stretch of [home] games on top, especially going on the road, it gives us a little more confidence,” Monk said of the impending road trip. “We know how hard it is to win on the road.”

Whether they’ll have to do it without Kevin Huerter remains to be seen, but Fox is confident in whoever suits up for Sacramento.

“Obviously with this team it’s always next man up mentality,” Fox said. “We have to be ready to play without Kev, but everybody is confident in Keon. For us, we are trying to focus on the next thing. Obviously we want Kev to be healthy but if he’s not ready to play, we still have to be ready to play.”

Mike Brown likes that his guys are figuring things out at the right time.

We say we want to play fast, we want to be physical, and we want to play together,” Brown said. “[Defense] has to be a part of our identity. I think our guys are understanding that: it’s great because it’s coming at the right time.”

The standings in ESPN showed a W and one game win streak . Actually, if Ellis didn’t get extended minutes ESPN would likely showed a L in the standings and 2 game losing streak . Next game up .

What;s going on with Murray? At the LIGHT THE BEAM last night he was either disappointed, dejected, or discouraged. Maybe all 3. He needs to talk to Malik or Malik talk to Murray and maybe some of Malik’s attitude can rub off. He needs to lighten up and have some fun. I know he missed 2 free throws in crunched time but so does Fox, Monk and Sabonis. PS Thought Duarte had a goog game. If he can be consistent like last night it would really help down this stretch.

Malik’s crazy poster dunks are absolute energy changers. Guys dunked like that in the 80s and 90s but the Association as a whole has kinda moved away from throwing it down the way he does. I get why, but man it is nice to watch someone who goes up with malice for the rim every time.

The Kings absolutely need to take care of business and win these next two upcoming games on the road. The schedule is brutal after those games, and the days in between some games including traveling are not favorable either. If you want to avoid a play-in spot rather than being the 6th seed, NEED to win the games against bad teams.

Even though they got the win today (and I’ll take any at this point), they were very lucky to have because they nearly gave the game away to a team literally missing 10 players.

I hope Huerter is fine.

With all due respect to Keon, this D is still a mess. The PoA D is horrible and we keep scrambling after it happens. Sure we have some nice defensive stats in the last slate of games, but these last two were against depleted, bad offensive teams.

And opponents seem to have rediscovered the benefits of crashing the offensive boards against us. This time Keegan helped in that category, but usually it’s Domas on his own.

Sorry for the doom and gloom, but I just see mayor weaknesses that are hard to mask and easy to exploit, and some strengths (3 point shooting, pace) that are bound to regress when defenses tighten up near the end of the season. Hope they prove me wrong.

Need a hot Huerter and a TEAM that plays defense to do anything in the playoffs.

What does Keon being a G-League have anything to do with it? IMO, undrafted players, G-Leaguers, and Two-ways are having more and more of an impact in the league then ever before.

Fun fact: What do Rudy Gobert, Alex Caruso, Lu Dort, and Pet Bev have in common?

All either started in the G-League, were undrafted, or started as two-way players…and all “do it” by making all NBA defensive teams and helping their teams win.

There is no reason a Kings player who followed the same path can’t do it as well.

There is no way for this version of the Kings to be top level defensive team. I think we can still make some noise being middle of pack defense. Last night was dumb unforced TOs that almost turned into Kangz.

It was turnovers not defense that almost lost the game. I don’t know if the Kings are a top defensive team or not but they are moving up the latter.Mayde one or rwo more defensive players along with what Fox, Keon, Keegan and Duarte do will even up that latter.

Why can’t this team at least be average as it is now?

Gobert played most of his rookie year in the G-League, despite being a first round pick. My only point was it really doesn’t seem to matter anymore where players are taken unless it’s in the early lottery. I feel anyone taken after #15 to undrafted seems to make equal impact these days.

I saw a crazy stat a while back. On average, over 100 undrafted NBA players get at least a game a season in the NBA. Last season the Heat used 5 undrafted players in the majority of their games.

Just think about that…a team with 5 undrafted players in their rotation made it to the NBA finals.

They all entered the league undrafted and carried their team deep into the playoffs.

Making moves to win while Fox and Sabonis are strong is obviously something completely absurd.

We know you have accepted mediocrity as your ultimate goal.

Wait four to five years to develop a player while Fox and Sabonis are no longer relevant.

Maybe a GM should get a player that is established to fill the obvious need?

I am now fully convinced it is Brown’s defensive scheme. For that past couple of games I’ve really focused on the off ball defense. Players are sagging way too far off of their opponent ready to help in case of a straight line drive. This leads to wide open perimeter shooters who the Kings then scramble and rotate to cover. Fox and Monk are really guilty of this. They leave their perimeter opponent to swipe and help with defense in the lane, then they rush to close out shooters. It makes the defense look out of sorts and late to everything (which they basically are), which is why teams seem to have excellent nights shooting he 3 on the Kings If they just stuck more to man to man defense instead of heavy switching and help, it might change things.

That all being said, I’m no NBA coach but maybe Brown is forced to bring help defenders into the paint because the Kings lack any real rim protection. The only caveat, is they do the same thing when Len is in the game, so I think it’s definitely a scheme of the defense.

As to POA defense, it’s true that it needs help and maybe Ellis can be a difference maker, but teams are already switching him off their POA player, despite Eliis trying to fight through screens. It also doesn’t help when you have a bulldog like Bane just strengthening his way to the paint. That dude is strong and reminds me of a small LBJ they way he can power through 3 defenders.

The bulldog was 7-19 from the field. I’d suggest that not only did he not power his way through three defenders, he didn’t often power his way through even one.

One point. How can a player help with defense in the paint and protect the 3 or even a straight line drive? IMO you have to defend out front first. Then you won’t have to defend the paint all the time. I believe your best out front defenders are yes Fox Keon Murray and when in there Duarte.

It’s well worth it. I just rewatched the end of the game beginning with the Keegan steal and the ensuing three Fox three-pointers.

It was a sloppy game all around, with both teams at times trying to play faster than the other. Keon had two blocks in that quarter and Fox had a timely steal, but Monk was simply the best player on the court once overtime came around.

He’s 4th in scoring (while 4th in FGA), 4th in usage, 2nd in rebounds, second in steals, and first in blocks. If you want him to score more, it’s going to come at the expense of someone else’s shots. Do you want Monk to shoot less? Maybe we will see an uptick of FGAs from Keegan now that Hurters is likely out for a while.

If you want him to be some 20 and 10 star, then Monk isn’t putting up 6MOY numbers, Sabonis isn’t setting records of double-doubles, and Fox’s isn’t taking his shots in the clutch.

I just don’t understand the knock on him at this point. Is it because he’s not shooting at a rookie record pace from 3, because that is the only area that’s not as good as last season.

So what makes his progress unacceptable and disappointing at the 4th pick when there is basically no one (sans Jalen Williams) playing better than him who was drafted after him.

I know its still early but I think we can make some noise in the playoffs. If we can keep up with D effort, there would be so much better transition 3s. We could peak at the right time.

You have to grab defensive rebounds and avoid sloppy turnovers for better transition 3’s.

Late last night, Domas grabbed a rebound while a Grizzly (I think Aldama) hovered behind him. Fox ran towards the space covered by Aldama instead of into space (why?) and Domas just threw a soft shuffle pass (why?), that Aldama snatched and laid it in (because, why not).

Bad, lazy play, bad focus, bad communication. So annoying.

and Jaren Jackson, Jr, who put together a well-rounded game of his own.

25 points on 8-27 from the field, and TWO rebounds in 39 minutes?

Frankly, if Jackson didn’t foul on almost every rebound he goes after, he probably would have had even fewer, difficult as that seems.

Sabonis thoroughly abused him. I’ve said for a long time that it isn’t Morant that makes Memphis important, but Steven Adams. The Grizz managed to win a good share of their games without The Flying Dipshit, but when Adams was out, that’s a below-average team.

Jackson has been getting by beating up on smaller players while Adams did all of the dirty work. Without Adams, he’s being exposed for what he is: A big man who can score points, but ultimately isn’t a difference-maker when his security blanket is gone.

A team with Morant and Jackson as its best players is a play-in team at best. Without a significant roster change, those bears are going to be in the woods for a while, and they’re already doing what bears do while there.

Agree on JJJ as he was a total liability to the Grizz last nite .

I was really left scratching my head when they traded away Adams for seconds and the ghost of Oladipo. If their GM really thought JJJ was ready to take over at the 5 spot, he should loose his job.

Agreed. I had such high hopes for him, but the more I watch him, he really seems like he is going to have a Thurl Bailey type of career. He needs to play with a Domas-like center who can dominate the boards, and probably be a 4th option on offense.

He could actually be a nice compliment to Sabonis. If/when Memphis realizes they can’t win with him at the 5, Monte should call. It would be very much like the Domas/Turner pairing in Indy. Ironically enough, Turner is having a similar type year at the 5 for the Pacers. He just doesn’t crash the boards enough to hold down the 5 spot.

Or… just go offer Jalen Smith the full MLE once he opts out in Indy.

OT but anyone watching what the Rockets are doing right now? Won 6 in a row and 8 of their last 9. Only three games behind the 10 seed and even play the warriors one more time this year. It’d be so sick if they knock out them out or the Lebron’s. They should be our second favorite team tbh

I am from the school of “be careful what you wish for”.

Ok, the Rockets continue on their roll and GSW diminishes and flops out from the 10 spot to 11.

Houston plays 9th seeded LAL and wins to match up with the loser of 7 vs. 8. Undoubtedly, that will be Sacramento playing Houston in the Play-In for the 8th seed…

Funny as it, of the 3 possibles for the Play-In: Lakers, Warriors or Rockets, that is the same order I believe Sac would fare best against in a winner-take-all one game series.

Of course, the 5 or 6th seed would be best to avoid that consideration.

Good point. Was thinking of revenge assuming the kings would avoid the play in, but that’s obv not a given
