Kings 109, Clippers 95: Dominant second-half propels Sacramento to big win

The Kings needed this one badly in the home-stretch race to the postseason. Behind big nights from Keegan Murray, De'Aaron Fox, and Domantas Sabonis - and a dominant second-half defense - they got the win, and stayed alive in the shuffle for the six seed.

SACRAMENTO — Tuesday’s game, a battle between two teams separated by just four games with eight to play, should have had a “big game” feel.

Through the first 11:56, it did not.

Both teams appeared to be going through the motions early, with neither connecting on better than 40% of their field goals attempts while combing for eight turnovers in the first period. But the tenor and tenacity changed thanks to a four second flurry that saw Brandon Boston and Trey Lyles hit back to back threes with the quarter winding down.

That energy was followed early in the second period with an emphatic Alex Len block led to a shot clock violation that seemed to wake up the Kings, who responded with a 9-0 run to take a 33-24 lead with 9:41 to play in the half. Len played a role in Sacramento expanding the lead as well, forcing a bad pass that turned into a De’Aaron Fox dunk to push the advantage to 11 with 8:37 to play and forcing a Clippers’ timeout.

A pair of Davion Mitchell threes out of the break put Sacramento up 44-28, but the Clippers answered, going on a 14-6 run over the next two and a half minutes to claw back within six with less than five to play in the half.

The teams traded buckets out of the timeout, with Domantas Sabonis and Fox going to work on the offensive end and the Clippers getting quality looks for Norman Powell outside and Ivica Zubac inside. But the teams would combine to miss their next nine attempts from the field before Powell converted a three-point play to cut the lead to three, only to see Mitchell answer with his fourth three of the game on his way to a 14 point first half.

Trey Lyles spoke on the bench’s play, and Mitchell’s scoring, after the win. “We have guys that can score the ball,” Lyles said. “Davion showed that the last few games – he’s shown that the last few years. We have guys that can step up and make plays, it’s just showing that and being consistent.”

Mitchell mentioned that Malik Monk encouraged him to keep shooting if the defense was going to continue to close out short, and talked about his confidence over the recent stretch.

I’m not thinking,” he said. “I’m just making quick decisions, playing good basketball, and taking what the defense gives me.”

Mike Brown talked about Mitchell’s increased role, and the trust he has put in him. “With that freedom, he’s handled it the right way, and he’s starting to show what he’s capable of – not just as an on ball defender but as a scorer. He worked really hard this offseason on his offensive game, and it’s starting to show at the right time.”

The third quarter has been the bane of the Kings’ existence much of this season, especially at home, where it feels like they have given up big leads time and time again. It appeared early that the pattern would repeat, but then Sabonis happened.

In a little less than a minute’s time, Sabonis hammered home a dunk off a beautiful Keon Ellis feed, then assisted on a pair of Harrison Barnes triples to put his team up ten, 67-57. Sabonis also secured his 58th consecutive double-double in the frame, giving him a league-leading 71 on the season.

This is the point where I was going to write “and Keegan Murray was quietly putting together another solid outing”, but this is also the point where Murray got loud.

After draining a three from the corner, Murray took a good feed from Sabonis hard to the rack, slamming the ball home over Zubac with authority – and earning rare praise from dunk critic Malik Monk during the ensuing timeout. The flurry put Sacramento up 76-62 with 4:11 to play in the third and gave Murray a team-high 16. Mike Brown talked about wanting Murray to be more aggressive in the absence of Monk and Kevin Huerter, and his second-year player delivered once again Tuesday night.

Keegan, last year, he was primarily a catch and shoot three point shooter,” Brown said. “This year he’s shown the ability to defend at a high level, to rebound at a high level, and to score at all three levels. He’s so strong, he’s a big man, and he can play with some force. And it’s starting to show. And we need that with Malik and Kevin out – we need him to step up, and do so with some force.”

In Monk’s absence, the scoring of the dunk fell on Lyles. “It was alright, I would give it like a 6.”

Murray finished the night with 19 points, five rebounds, and two assists, while notching a game-high 18 shot attempts. He had another tough finish at the rim that led to a three point play and pushed the lead to 17, and Fox would finish the frame with a bucket and an assist to Alex Len to make it 91-70 through three.

Fox and Len connected for another alley-oop early in the fourth to make it 96-70, and after Russell Westbrook completely whiffed on what should have been an easy layup attempt, Los Angeles all but packed it in. The Kings cruised to the finish despite Westbrook’s 11 fourth quarter points, winning by the final of 109-95.

Sacramento was led by Sabonis, who was one assist shy of a triple-double with 22/20/9, Fox, who dropped 20 points and seven assists, and Murray, who attempted a team-high 18 field goals and scored 19 points. Mitchell was excellent off the bench, scoring 14 on 5-10 shooting, including 4-7 from behind the arc. Trey Lyles added 15 in his second game back as well.

Alex Len was effective on both ends of the floor, scoring four points on his two dunks, while pulling down seven rebounds and blocking three shots. He had an assist and a steal as well.

Mike Brown was fired up about his performance. “At the end of the day, freaking Alex Len, what a man he was today. He played 12 minutes and was +18. He played a beautiful, beautiful game of basketball.”

For the Clippers, Paul George (18), Norman Powell (17), and Zubac (10) joined Westbrook in double-figures. Sacramento help LA to just 40.8% shooting from the field and forced 15 turnovers in one of their strongest defensive performances of the season. They also limited James Harden to seven points on 1-7 shooting.

Sacramento now heads out on the road for a difficult East Coast swing that will see them play four games in six nights, starting with the Knicks Thursday night. Currently tied for seventh with the Suns, and one game back from the Pelicans and Dallas for the sixth seed, there is not much margin for error over the final seven games.

“Whether we go East or we are here, these games matter,” Brown said. “Every time we step out on the floor, we have to be locked in, we have to try and get wins, because there’s still movement in the standings. We have to be able to take care of what we can.”

Fox’s efficiency since the start of the new year has been awful. Just not a good year since that short MVP candidate type improvement stage.

Keegan has been showing third star signs these last one or two weeks which is fairly big for the franchise

Davion’s improvement of late making up for Monk’s absence a bit

I’ve been saying for 3 years Len is a baller, and watched Mike Brown not play him and favor scrubs like Metu and McGee

Yeah, I never understood McGee over Len. Currently, I don’t understand Duarte playing over Edwards. At the very least, Edwards should get some of Duarte’s minutes.

To your point, Fox has shot under 40% from the floor since March 1st. Something seems off.

I suspect he’s been impacted by the adjustments the refs made in February. Getting fewer foul calls, which means more of those are just missed FGs. I haven’t looked closely at it, just speculating.

Nothing to worry about. They have been playing with high defensive intensity the last 15 games or so; there has to be some offense to defense trade-off.

Fox has been great defensively, at least since March 1st. And since then, he is averaging more than 3 steals + blocks per game, which is excellent for a high usage player. Also shooting 85%+ FT%. All great signs come playoff time.

I don’t necessarily dispute the idea that players’ shooting efficiency goes down if they have to expend a lot of energy on other elements of the game, it sounds logical.

But what does that say about the offense of Domas, who is constantly battling down low, grabbing rebounds, rotating over when there’s dribble-penetration, setting picks, bringing the ball up the floor and never taking a play off?

Is it fair to demand from him to take on a bigger role as scorer, as some here and on social media do?

I think that since Domas takes many more shots at the rim his accuracy is higher and fatigue much less of a factor. I will note he seems to be missing more 3s lately.

Sabonis missing threes? He only takes one three about ever 10 games. IMO I would have him work on the short game say 10 to 15 feet. He is open so much at say the free throw line and make those consistently he could score 6 to 10 more points a game. He is a very unselfish player. PS he has really good shot mechanics and has both touch and arch he could do that. Will he?

Could be a lot of factors. He has the mecanics. Arch is good. Keeps his elbow in. Two big factors might be confidence or maybe he’s tired or both. Only Sabonis knows.

Since March 1st, Domas’ FG% is less than 50% and his assist to turnover ratio is down. He also suffers the same trade off as Fox does.

Is it fair to demand from him to take on a bigger role as scorer, as some here and on social media do?

He probably has the lowest usage rate among the top 30 players. It is natural for some people to think that he should do more. Every time he get a triple double, he gets compared to Jokic. It is not fair to compare him to Jokic. He will never be the same level of scorer that Jokic is. Nevertheless, some fans hold him to that level and that in turn will produce some fans to demand more from him.

Usage is such a vague stat.

Does usage include constantly playing help defense because the perimneter players get burned at the PoA? Does it include fighting, often singlehandedly, for rebounds?

He’s the initiator of most offensive plays in the halfcourt.

If people demand him doing more based on his usage then these people should look less at the stat sheet and more at the actual game.

Fox is doing some things like a much improved player, more assists, a lot better defense and has started to be a vocal as well as example player. IMO he is really starting to be an all around player. I am happy this is happening to him.

Keegan has had a very difficult time in stepping away from the shadows cast by Huerter and Monk. When he is the “star”. like summer league, he balls out. Put him on the varsity and he looks for a role. Now with those 2 out, and with the coaches yelling at him, he has stepped up. He does have the skill set to play very well. He just does not always do it.
The Monk injury may, in a very weird way, be good for him.
The coaches have pivoted away from DHO with Hueter and PnR with Malik to a more wing orientated offense. This may catch some teams un-prepared. I hope.
Len has really stepped up as has Davion.

IMO especially in the second half some of the best team defense I’ve seen. Working together good communication and really good physicallity. All this held the Clips to 96 points but also as the saying goes “Good defense leads to good offense” The margin was 14 but go have gone higher. I’ll tyake that anyday. GO KINGS!

That is one terrific recap Melissa. Wow. Fantastic detail.

I had a hard time determining what was my favorite moment of the game. Was it Keegan channeling vintage James Worthy with his Statue of Liberty dunk to put the Kings up 14 with 4:11 to go in the 3rd?

ALEX LEN. Every moment he was in the game could have been my favorite moment. There is such value in players knowing exactly who they are and how they can impact the game.

Davion continues to contribute offensively. That is a bit of a game changer for this team. If he had been contributing the entire year like he has the last month they might have a win or two more.

Nice to see Trey have a big game. I like what I see from Sasha as well. He is a smart player, understands where to be on both sides of the court. I hope he can see consistent minutes to find his lane. My only nit to pick is I am d-o-n-e with Duarte. Give Kessler those minutes. He is Danny Vranes 2.0 with some more time.

That 3rd quarter was impressive. Kings win handily against a good team whilst shooting 42% from the floor and 28% from three. Props to Domas, as usual, for a huge game against one of the more physical centers in the league.

One note on the Clips. Lue commented a few games ago he thought his team lacked heart. I think he is correct. I have felt they were a paper tiger all season. All sauce, no entree.

Hot Take: For me, the game ball goes to the bench. Alex Len was a force at the rim, Davion and Trey carried the defense to offense vibe. Mike Brown had a hard time subbing in Sabonis and the rest of the starters. There was even a lull in the tempo at that time. The Kings stayed solid in the second half and LAC put up little fight. Domas caught fire statistically in the second half- a quiet 20/20 game to take the lead as most 20 rebound games in Sacramento history.

The Clippers looked like they really missed Kawhi.

Kings Win! Dance like a sailor!

Good blow-by-blow recap, with quotes to boot.

As for the game itself:

“It was alright, I would give it like a 6.”

–Trey Lyles

But yeah, it was much better than that.

Keegan with the gentlest, almost apologetic, poster dunk known to man; Westbrook with the flubbed gimme dunk; Harden only sprinting one time . . . after a ref . . . during a dead ball situation . . . to challenge a travel call on his way to 1-7 from the field (hat tip to Keon, Davion, and Fox); Len being a defensive monster with one particularly memorable block: That’s a game that I’m going to watch again.

Boston has literally nothing to play for – playoff contenders are eliminated as is history making records. Depending on who is in the lineup that might be a way easier game for than anticipated.

Lots of good moments from the game.
My favorite being 1st quarter Lyles deflecting a ball, diving for the loose ball only to have the opposing player recover it while laying on the floor. Then Duarte snatches the ball right out of the Clipper’s hands and gets a transition layup.
Lyles does many little things that help this team, especially from his bench role. So glad he is back in the lineup. Kings need their bench to continue high-level play.

42% from the field, 28% from three, 76% from the charity stripe and a win???? Weird times. Rebounding, defense, 12 minutes of Len and Domas doing wonderful Domas things won this game.

Big win, this team plays with heart most nights and is able to keep fighting and hang in games. Love to see a team that is competitive most nights, totally different from years past. I’m still appreciating the run and not too worried about injuries or how far we go this year. They needed more talent with or without the injuries so it will be fun to see what some of these guys like Davion do with the extra minutes down the stretch. Just praying Monte can upgrade the roster in the offseason but enjoying this team for now too.

Wednesday score report:

Pels lose tonight, Kings half game out of the 6th spot. Tied in the Loss column.

(JMan, I made sure this really is today’s game!)

Phoenix is likely to beat Cleveland though, so they will move up on us by half a game.

Phoenix is likely to beat the resting Cavs…. Don’t tell Burke she couldn’t comprehend this.

Ha! Sounds like you’re back on earth.

Looks like the Suns will win tonight, moving them into a tie with the Pels. If we can beat the Knicks tomorrow night, it will create a three-way tie. The Suns should still have the most difficult remaining strength of schedule while the Pels will have the easiest. They still have a game against each other, and we have a game remaining against each of them (a home b2b). We really need to take care of business in this upcoming road trip.
