Kings vs Warriors Game 1 Preview: Our Moment to Seize

The Sacramento Kings start their playoff journey at home, but will have to win four games against the defending champs if they want to move on.
By | 97 Comments | Apr 15, 2023

The Sacramento King begin their first playoff run in over a decade and a half on Saturday night and will face off against a healthy Warriors squad with more than enough firepower to match them. In a season filled with cinema-quality storylines for the Kings, Sacramento will now face off against the only opponent that truly feels right for the occasion – the team the Kings owner originally came over from, the team their head coach’s career was resurrected on, the team that once unceremoniously dumped Harrison Barnes to chase championships with Kevin Durant… hell, the only team with the proximity to really pick the bones off of a Kings fanbase and enticing all youth of the area not willing to root for an irrelevant hometown team. The Warriors have been, at least for the entire tenure of Vivek Ranadive’s ownership, the blueprint by which the Kings have tried to build and rebuild their franchise in emulation of. They’ve been the dream. They’ve been the enemy looming in the shadows, waiting for Sacramento to finally be ready.

Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green are healthy.

De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis are hungry.

The series? The series, regardless of what Warrior radio personalities and twitter stans say,  is entirely up in the air.

For the first time in seventeen years:

Let’s talk playoff basketball!

When: Saturday, April 14th, 5:30 PM PT
Where: Golden 1 Center, Sacramento, CA
TV: ABC
Radio: Sactown Sports 1140

For Your Consideration

The Eighty-Third Game:  Today’s preview, as many previews before it, is not one for stats. Today’s preview is all goddamn vibes and let me tell you – the vibes in Sacramento are immaculate. Kings fans are working as go-betweens to help others afford tickets, pre-playoff parties at the Golden 1 Center with hope flowing like a river between the rocks of humanity, Warriors fans so nervous about this series they’re already sliding on the mask of cool indifference while they dispassionately tweet hundreds of times a day to Kings fans who just simply assume aloud that Sacramento has a shot.

Good.

Let them be scared. The first step in the grieving process is denial, and while the Warriors fantastic run over the last decade has been a sight to behold, nothing lasts for ever. Nothing is evergreen. No dynasty, no matter how many steps ahead management and coaching may seem, lasts forever… and the entire Bay Area knows it. It may not be this series – the defending champs deserve the respect of being the favorites until they’ve proven otherwise, but someday soon the day will come when the Warriors fall short. Steph Curry’s immaculate jumpshot will rim out, Klay Thompson’s fourth quarter legs will give out, Draymond Green is going to podcast his thoughts on the second round instead of screaming them at a referee while playing in them.

That may not be the way this playoff story starts for the Kings, or ends for the Warriors, but that inevitability is closer than it has ever been –

And everyone knows it.

Today’s not a day for stats. We can twist those any which way we please. We can argue with radio personalities and their clinging groupies about clutch time and road records and championship pedigree translating into series wins when everyone and their mother is healthy, but, honestly, I don’t care. The ball goes up, a few whistles get blown and a final buzzer sounds. Anyone whose imagination is too limited to see how this Kings squad, this year, can win four before this Warriors squad, this year… anyone who refuses even the possibility is disingenuous and can be ignored.

There are so many questions we’re going to get to answered in the coming weeks: how does every player on this Kings squad do under the brightest of lights? Is there another gear to be reached offensively and especially defensively with this Kings squad? How far are we away from a real contender – not a playoff contender, but a tried and true championship contender? Why not now, why not us?

Here we all are, in the hours before the culmination of a moment we’ve only been able to dream of for the last sixteen years, our captivity in the NBA cellar assured to end and honestly, the only way I see it ending is in triumph. No, we may not win a Larry O’Brien trophy.  There’s plenty of reasons for analysts and talking heads to crunch the numbers and assume the Kings may not make it out of this round. It should be understood that at the end of the proverbial day, the Kings – their players, coaches, ownership, management and especially their fans, may have strapped their hopes and dreams for this team to wings of feathers and wax. We may have climbed too high, experienced the trappings of a good team too quickly – the Kings with their Coach of the Year, Clutch Player of the Year, dual All-Stars might have flown too close to the sun. Pundits, Twitter users with names like CurryMamba24, and that guy at work HR is always talking to all seem to think Sacramento did.

Sure, it may actually be the collective fate of our city to crash hard into into the ocean, to shatter our hearts into sixteen seasons worth of pieces on the water below, be left to drown in the takes of the naysayers and non-believers as the rest move on without us.

But for all the righteous confidence, in the backpats and told-you-so’s, those same folks who doubted us, will forget they also once said that escaping the bottom of the NBA was impossible for Sacramento. They’ll forget they ever thought turning this franchise around was an unworthy endeavor. They’ll say they knew this Icarus of a team would perish but…

They’ll never know what it was like to feel this type of free.

They’ll never be able to say we didn’t fly.

The sun in the sky is warm and the wind is strong at our backs, and regardless how far we fly or how high we get before the fall – we’ve already won.

Prediction

Kings in four, you Tesla-worshipping, Sam Bankman-Fried defending, Juicero-investing, superstar-man-of-the-people-but-hates-affordable-housing jersey buying, WAAAAAAARRIORS fans.

Kings: 143, Warriors: 131

The last time the Kings were in the playoffs I was shy of 16 years old. I have never experienced playoff Kings as a fully formed adult with access to alcohol. LFG SACRAMENTO

I am so happy for all of you that will attend this game, or another game in this series. I am also happy for everyone who will be at a watch party or will watch at home with family or friends.

I will get up in the middle of the night, and sit quietly in some dark corner of the house with my tablet, refrain from cheering while trying not to wake my family.

The first time during my far-away fandom that I am frustrated and sad that I cannot truly share this special day with others, other than some inadequate comments here on TKH. Oh well. Some other time.

Enjoy the game. Cheer your heart out. And we need even more cowbells.

GO KINGS!

Well, it’ll be similar for me in that I’ll be in a steel hexagon box at work shortly after the game tips off, I can scream as loud as I want because nobody will hear me because it’s out in the middle of nowhere, and the game will end before the temperature drops into the 40s overnight (8pm Pacific’ish). I might see the beam, but based on previous experience (being out there when the Kings won and the beam was lit) I’m assuming I won’t be able to see it 50 miles away.

Eh, yeah, not similar at all. But I might watch on my tablet insead of my phone like I usually do.

For me it’s kind of the same (apart from the family part): I’ll try to sleep a couple of hours an wake up at 2:15 AM. For the first time in my life I’ll finally be able to do it for a play-off game (in April 2006 I wasn’t even 16 years old…). Even if we can’t share phisically the moment with others, I still write just to share from distance the fact that we (me, you and other non Americans Kings fans) are all on the same boat and not alone in this.

For the first time in years I feel a bit…nervous for a Kings game? I don’t know whether it’s nerves, butterflies, something in between, or the Turkish eggs I just had, but I feel something for this game.

It’s so nice to feel something other than despair for once. Who would’ve thought after all these years.

Enjoy today Kings fans. Today, life is good.

L St in front of G1C is closed off so I expect there will be plenty of activities near the arena. My only tip is to use Applepay for water bottle inside G1C, it’s $2.50 instead of $6.50 😀

Expect all the eateries outside to be packed. Eat before or go early and eat at the arena. I’m a big fan of the nachos kiosk on the main level. Ask for half and half chicken and carnitas. It’s a full meal.

There was nothing for the Kings to play for. The Kings weren’t starting 3 of their 5 starters (and I’m still confused why Barnes and Murray played as much as they did).

Game 81 has little to do with how Game 1 of this playoff series will go.

Also, many STHs – myself included – tend to identify games they’re definitely going to attend and games they’re definitely going sell before the season even starts. I usually sell one half of B2Bs and some games in the middle of those 4-in-6-days stretches because getting into downtown from Folsom gets to be kind of a drag (especially with the construction on 50). For others, the Warriors and Lakers tickets were always *really* tempting to sell because you could easily get 3-4x your average ticket price for those games which offsets a whole lot of the STH price.

I covered my entire 4 game Round 1 price by selling the Warriors game last week (I usually keep my Warriors/Lakers tickets but I knew that was going to be G-league BS)

I don’t think any of this factors into the playoffs, though. To the extent that the tickets are listed at silly prices, that’s probably folks trying to cover their whole strip by selling a game or two but planning to attend if they don’t sell.

because getting into downtown from Folsom gets to be kind of a drag (especially with the construction on 50).

I’m driving out to Jackson tonight, and trust me, I know exactly what you mean. Everything from 99/Biz 80 to Watt is completely and totally ripped up right now. It’s an absolute drag.

I live like 3 miles from the DT connector, and I rarely use that thing, and I avoid 5 on game nights when possible because I know it’s going to be packed with fans both directions.

Yeah. Plus it was a Fri night on top of that? And it was game 81 and not likely to matter for the Kings (usually meaning they’ve missed the playoffs by then)? I woulda sold those tix to pay for my seats, too.

My thought process exactly. Sold that last warriors game for $750/2tix. Bought an extra set of two upper bowl Tix for all four first round home games for $733. I’ve sold Lakers tix for $900 before. Hate listening to entitled L and W fans. Even worse if the Kings lose those games.

A great article that we will always remember when the Kings win this series.

With your prediction, I see you are channeling my obscure 1966 Orioles-Dodgers World Series reference. No one thought the Orioles could win, they won in 4 and that the was the end of the Dodger dynasty.

Everyone nationally talks about the Kings inexperience, but I’m not sure they, or even the Warriors, understand what the Warriors about to experience at Golden 1, an intensity of a nearly religious fervor. I know fans don’t win games, but they can certainly make it more difficult for a road team to win them.

My high school age son is going to watch the game with friends at one of their homes, so I’ll probably just stay home and watch the game alone, so for those of you like Kingsguru21, RikSmits and HongKongKingsFan, we can imagine that we are all watching the game together. Please don’t forget to put out some snacks.

Good post.
I am surprised but not surprised that the national media and the duds bay area fans are so certain on duds win in the series.
On the other hand, I do note, as you said, that the indifference belies a lingering nascent almost unconscious anxiety.
If the duds played the LAC, their fans could accept the loss (not really, they don’t accept anything) but the Kings are the upstarts- this would shake their core. and they know that- hence the anxiety masquerading as indifference.
There are not a lot of “if’s” for them- if Wiggins plays well, if we do this or that. They are going to be as expected.
The unexpected and the “if’s” fall with the Kings- if Sabonis can dominate, if Fox is Fox, if Keegan emerges…

The national media- who I have mostly ignored- does not play the games.
I did not want the play the duds- now I relish it.

I was 18 in 2006, so it’s been almost literally half a lifetime since the Kings were relevant. I’ve seriously daydreamed about this moment for years and now it’s here. About to dust off the vintage Webber jersey in the back of my closet and enjoy every minute of this. Let’s go!!!!!!!!

Will, fantastic! Looking forward to doors opening at 4 and ringing the crap out of my cowbell while rocking my Dunkin Domas shirt from just below the rafters.

Exquisite writing Will. Your season has been as successful as the team’s.

I feel like the Kings have more than a decent chance to win this series, and I think it will be in six games.

I get the national writers giving the Warriors the edge, how can you not when a core is that battle tested, but I also feel like they are giving them credit for things that they have not accomplished so far this season. They have had sloppy and horrendous turnovers all season, and now they will tighten it up? I mean, maybe. Their defense has been mediocre, and now GP3 who a month ago couldn’t pass a physical and Wiggins who said he barely did cardio for the last month is going to shut down our wings? I mean, maybe.

All the while, they King’s don’t seem to get credit for what they have consistently done all year: Scoring efficiently at every level. Transition, half court, off turnovers, from range, getting to the line, in clutch. Relentless. 8 different players have scored 20 in a game. Their defensive rating on the road and in the 4th is not to be laughed at. The best 3rd quarter team in the league. Effectively ten deep. Unselfish and unrelenting.

Brown has the vibe, the staff, and the knowledge to make it. His two best players are heading into this with a serious chip on their soldier. They are respectively a sledgehammer in Domas and a scalpel in Fox to attack the Dub’s defense, and he has a quiver full of arrows to fire away from three in Keegan, Heurter, HB, Monk, & Lyles. He has masterfully taken advantage of Davion’s strengths and hidden his weaknesses this year. He has squeezed juice from Metu, a borderline talent. Smartly got Len some minutes to close the season. Got Edwards some confidence so he can come in and hound a scorching Klay if need be. Both Monk and HB have shown the ability to get their own shot when things get tight.

Maybe Keegan is overwhelmed in game one and two. He also might go 7-11 from three in Game 3. Monk will have at least one game where he gets fifteen in a quarter and it is the difference in a win. Trey has shown the ability to win a quarter as well. Role players have huge impacts in playoff games.

I keep thinking to that post game interview where Fox said he didn’t give an eff who was out there, and Monk said “we here too now, we here too”. I think he is right. The Kings are dangerous.

I don’t know how Draymond is going to hold up having Sabonis pound on him game after game. How are Klay’s legs going to hold up chasing Keegan and Kevin for thirty plus minutes seven games in a row. I know DDV will give a lot of effort in slowing down Fox, as will GP, but so has the whole league and he still was the most potent closer in the league, and it wasn’t all that close.

The Warriors might punch this team in the mouth in the first quarter or half, and go up by 15-20. It won’t matter, the Kings play all 48. We have watched that all year long. The Warriors might even win game one and game two. I won’t be worried. I won’t be disappointed. As Rob likes to say, the Kings are playing with house money. They have the edge without the pressure. They will come at the Warriors over and over and over until the series is done.

I would be concerned if I was the Warriors. The Kings are here now, too.

I keep thinking to that post game interview where Fox said he didn’t give an eff who was out there, and Monk said “we here too now, we here too”. I think he is right. The Kings are dangerous.

He said something more important later on in that same presser. Fox said ‘We knew we could speed them up, we knew we were younger and had fresher legs.”

I thought that was the actual quote that should scare opponents, not the oft cited (now) “I don’t give a fuck whose over there.”

As Rob likes to say, the Kings are playing with house money. They have the edge without the pressure. They will come at the Warriors over and over and over until the series is done.

This is exactly why I have the Kings in 6.

Agreed.

I think the fast pace the Kings play at, where they don’t really take a play off, will affect a team with as many miles on their legs at the Warriors. That is why I am not overly concerned with a loss in game one or two.

These Kings know that their core is 22-26 years old. They know their coach and gm are locked up. They can go for it and get their flowers and know coming back next season they are more ready than ever.

These Warriors lose in the first round after winning a ring? The Exec who put it all together likely leaving? Decisions to be made with Draymond? Their best young players was hit in the mouth in preseason and regressed? Their tax situation? They have pressure that the Kings do not.

GS definitely has pressure due to the factors you mentioned, but I doubt that the Kings’ pace will affect GS. GS had the fastest pace of any team this season.

Taking my wife and we will be in section 215. I was lucky enough to go to playoff games at Arco (I refuse to call it anything else).

She has no idea what she’s in for. Even brought out the ole cow bell. LTB & LFG!!!!!!!

I’ve been reading in the shadows for years now. Right now… at the end of this miraculous regular season and the start of our playoff journey… feels like the right time to join the party.

Sacramento born-and-bred. Was still in my 20s when the Sacramento Kings era started in 1985. Left Sac after high school, eventually ending up in Tokyo six years ago. I’ve followed the Kings through (a little) thick and (a ton of) thin. 38 years. What a painful and goofy journey it’s been.

TKH team: You are simply awesome!! Even at the “other” site, it was obvious just how much more intelligence and fun you brought to the table compared to normal sports commentary (even at the national level). And when you started TKH, I was nervous for you. But against all odds, by sheer guts, ability, and passion, you made it happen. Congrats. Respect. Gratitude.

Will is right: Regardless how far we fly or how high we get before the fall – we’ve already won. But what the hell… let’s win a little more, shall we? Kings in 5. Let’s do this thing already!

So …

how about you all throw out some predictions –

what do you all expect this contest?

I’ll start: (and grab the easy hot takes)
Warriors try (and refs help) to out Domas in early foul trouble. 3 in the 1st q. Dray flopping, Steph falling down, etc.

Both teams run a little cold from 3. Barnes does some post up magic and the 1st half is close (within 5 either way)

Great write up Will as always. Such a gift. My 17 son just went off to his public house pizzeria job wearing his purple Kings hoodie he got at G1C. Earlier in the year he donated my Brad Miller bobble head to the collection there. Live here in the heart of the Silicon Valley but my heart will always be on the West banks or the Sacramento River. Let’s Go Kings and LTFB!

G1C is crackling with energy 15 minutes before the game. Going to absolutely drown out duds fans. I’ve never felt anything like this in 7 years.
