The Sacramento Kings are signing Killian Hayes to a two-year deal.

Hayes has played in 10 games with the Kings this season. He has averaged 3.8 points, 3.3 assists and 2 rebounds in 15 minutes per game. He is shooting 26% from the field and 20 % from three.

Hayes was the 7th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. His best season came in 2022-23 when he averaged 10.3 points, 6.2 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 28 minutes per game. In that season, he shot only 37% from the field and 28% from three.

And why does this site, like king’s ownership, usually run so shitty?

Any time you have the chance to lock up a guard who can’t shoot or run an offense all too well, you gotta jump on that.

I don’t know if Max has enough cred to already have his own Chris Duarte

Then I’m ok with that. It’s just basically a contract for the remaining games this season. I’m not too concerned about that. I mentioned in the other thread, his non-guaranteed contract may have value in trade this summer, along with DDR’s partial guarantee.

Hypothetically, you could trade DDR and Hayes together which would likely total around $27M, but only $10M of that would be guaranteed next season. A team looking to shed salary could find those contracts appealing.

Denver, for example, may look to move off of Cam Johnson’s $23M and/or Zeke Nnaji $8M so they can try and retain Payton Watson. DDR and Hayes’ deals might appeal to them and the Kings could ask for some draft capital in helping them out. They do have their own #21 pick this year.

Oh, nevermind, that’s what smart franchises would do who are looking to build for the future. Kings are just as likely to sign Kevin Love for a farewell tour and trade for Jordan Poole. Sigh…

Here’s a question I asked in a previous thread without getting an answer:

If they can’t trade him early next offseason, can’t the Kings waive LaVine and stretch his cap hit over three seasons? That would give them lots of room under the cap next season, then both DDR and Hunter come off the books for the 2027-28 season. They currently have very little in commitments for the 2028-29 season and beyond.

I assume they could, but I would think LaVine has more value as an expiring or just simply coming off the books in the summer of 2027. His stretched contract would hurt for years. Wouldn’t that be like $9M per over the next 5 years?

Since LaVine will have only 1 yr remaining on his contact, the stretch provision as I understand it would allow the cap hit to be split over 3 yrs—$16M+ per year. That would open up over $32M in cap space for next season, and the Kings would be done with his cap hit by the end of the 2028-29 season.

Here’s the explanation I found:

How It Works

Eligibility: The stretch provision applies to players with at least $250,000 in guaranteed salary remaining on their contract.

Calculation: The remaining salary is spread over twice the number of years left on the contract, plus one additional year. For example, if a player has two years left, the salary will be stretched over five years (2 x 2 + 1).

Timing: If a player is waived between July 1 and August 31, the entire remaining salary can be stretched. If waived after August 31, only the remaining years are stretched, excluding the current season.

I had a boss that once said, “If you have to eat a turd, don’t chew it on the way down.” Sage advice. The Kings are not going to be relevant next year, so there is little reason to put $16m on the books in 27-28 & another $16m in 28-29. Better to just swallow the turd whole & move on.

OT: Oscars are today. Apparently a Keegan Murray poster makes an appearance in Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another.
