The Kings finally won a couple of games, beating two fellow bottom-feeders on the road and avoiding what was starting to feel like an inevitable 20-game losing streak. It doesn’t change their place at the bottom of the standings, and there’s still plenty of losing ahead. But for a team that hadn’t won away from home since early December, even small relief counts.
Streak Ended
Just when it seemed like the Kings might never win another game this season, they actually managed to win two games last week, both against fellow tankers on the road. Before the Kings win in Memphis last Monday, the Kings hadn’t won on the road since December 6th. Even with those two wins, the Kings are still holders of the worst record in the league at 14-48, but they do have one of the softest schedules in the entire league remaining. Still, I’m sure it was good mentally for the guys to get a couple of wins under their belt.
A bummer of a season for Keegan Murray
Last week I mentioned how one of the few things I was looking forward to for the remainder of the season was seeing how Keegan Murray would do down the stretch of the season now that he’s back from injury. Well, that didn’t last long as now Murray is dealing with yet another ankle injury. This one is supposedly more minor and only expected to keep him out for two more weeks, but at this point, they should not be in any rush to bring him back. Let him get healthy and hopefully come back stronger than ever for next season. It’s been an incredibly disappointing season for Keegan but the last thing we’d want is for him to get any lingering issues from bringing him back too early.
Clifford the big purple dog
Nique’s had an interesting rookie season and this week was no different. Against Memphis, Nique had an all around good game, scoring 12 points to go with 6 rebounds, 6 steals (the second most by a Kings rookie since Kenny Smith had 7 in 1988) and 5 assists. He followed that up with a 15 point, 4 steal game against Houston, then a 13 points 8 rebound, 7 assist, 2 steal game in a win against Dallas (where he shot jut 6-19) and then had maybe his best overall game of the season against the Lakers with 26 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists a steal and a block while shooting 11-18 from the field. For the season, Nique is now averaging 7.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 0.9 steals while shooting 40.7% from the field and 32.1% from three. He does a little bit of everything on both ends of the court, showcasing very good defensive and playmaking instincts. The most worrying thing is his inefficiency as a scorer, as he’s only shooting 37.2% from the field in 12 games as a starter. He’s definitely streaky on that end of the floor as showcased by varying good and bad performances, but he will need to get more consistent over the future. The nice thing about him is that he finds ways to contribute even when he isn’t scoring, so I think he’ll be able to carve out a role for himself just based on that. I also think that he’s been thrown into the deep end of the pool and might be a little bit out of his depth right now, but that should hopefully help long term even if there’s some struggling to start. Nique would probably look a lot better on a better team where he isn’t asked to do as much, but he’s also getting way more opportunity and time on the court right now than he probably would if this team was good, so hopefully he’s making the most of it and he can be a nice piece for this team in the future.
Nobody asked for this “Sprite Stat Tracker”
Maybe this is just me finding things annoying but this latest gimmick the Kings broadcast is doing of making the games try to look like an NBA 2K game where the players names are highlighted whenever they have the ball and the shot charts and everything else are on the screen is stupid. I understand it’s likely a paid sponsorship thing with Sprite but still, it doesn’t need to be there for the whole game. The broadcast as a whole needs a serious revamp, but that’s a conversation for another time.
Basketball with Stakes
I actually watched a couple of games this week between some of the NBA’s top teams, and what a difference watching basketball with actual stakes is compared to this Kings season. Both games involved the Oklahoma City Thunder as they took on the Detroit Pistons and the Denver Nuggets. Against Detroit, the Thunder didn’t have SGA but they still hung in there thanks to their excellent supporting cast. I had a couple takeaways from that game: Detroit is the real deal and Daryl Morey is going to look like an idiot for giving up on Jared McCain. The Pistons are currently #1 in the Eastern Conference and their two best players (Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren) are both under 25 years old. Cade is definitely the engine that makes this team run, but the supporting cast just fits really well. Tobias Harris is still out there doing his thing as a tertiary scorer, Ausar Thompson isn’t quite as good as Amen but is still a defensive menace. Duren is one of the best young bigs in the league and is a force on both ends of the court. The Pistons are 2nd in the NBA in Defensive Rating (the Thunder are 1st) and have already passed up their win total from last year (44) with a month and a half to go in the season. What a turnaround for a team that finished with just 14 wins two seasons ago. Rebuilds don’t have to take forever, and the Pistons (and Thunder) are proof.
On the Thunder’s side, Jared McCain has fit in like a glove since coming over from Philly. You may remember how McCain looked like an early lock for Rookie of the Year for Philadelphia last season before unfortunately tearing his meniscus and missing the rest of the season. This season, he barely got off the bench for the 76ers as VJ Edgecombe got more opportunity, but the 76ers still should have found a way to get him involved. Instead, they sent him to the Thunder for a late 1st and three second round picks. At the time Daryl Morey called this “selling high”, which I guess it could have been if the 76ers weren’t going to be playing him, but he looks awesome in Oklahoma City, and is averaging 11.8 points on 47.7% from the field and 42.9% from three in 19.4 minutes off the bench. When you have a stupid amount of assets like the Thunder have, you can exploit buy low opportunities like this. The rich get richer.
The other game I watched was the Thunder vs. Nuggets. I admittedly only watched part of this one after I had gotten an alert that Nikola Jokic had gotten into a fight after Lu Dort tripped him. Fight was too strong a word, but Jokic looked as angry as I’ve ever seen him, and to be fair, he had cause as Dort did intentionally trip him which could have caused a major injury. It was a dirty play, and Dort was rightly ejected. That game ended up going to overtime, with both teams missing big shots at the end of regulation (SGA was spectacularly blocked by Christian Braun on his game winning attempt and Cameron Johnson missed a wide open corner three on the other end) but OKC was able to get the win in overtime even as SGA sat (it was his first game back from injury and OKC wanted to be careful with his minutes). The Nuggets aren’t at full strength, but they’re still a team I would not want to be playing in the playoffs, especially if they get their weapons back before then. Jokic is still the best player in the world, and incidents like this one are going to spark some intrigue heading into the playoffs.
You may have noticed I spent more time talking about these two random games not involving the Kings than I did about the Kings this week, and that’s because it’s much easier to talk about things that spark joy, and good basketball is still very fun to watch and it’s still out there. I’m very much looking forward to the actual NBA playoffs, even if the Kings won’t be among the participants.

Upcoming Schedule:
- Tuesday, March 3rd vs. Phoenix Suns
- Thursday, March 5th vs. New Orleans Pelicans
- Sunday, March 8th vs. Chicago Bulls

The Kings have become even more unwatchable with the shitty graphics they now have on the screen. For decades video games have tried to make their products more life like and realistic. The Kings, however, have now decided to make their roster, product, and production more video game like.
Unserious franchise.
-Worst product on the court.
-Sounds like off the court/behind the scenes workplace environment has some issues (at least I’ve heard there are issues)
-Possibly the worst broadcast crew.
The NBA trifecta of suckitude.
The Grimmest Show on Court!
Off court definitely has issues. I know people who have dealt with the kings and it’s pathetic how they deal. And I believe I’ve read stuff about not great how they treat their employees either.
Vivek is a piece of shit
IIRC, the Kings were one of, if not the first, to furlough their employees when the COVID “lockdown” happened.
Yup. The first NBA team.
It’s certainly a different approach to selling game tickets: “Hate our broadcast? Attend in person!”
Like showing the name of the player handling the ball? How did I ever live without that?
It’s been downright depressing to follow this team this season. We’ve seen plenty of piss poor play and woeful teams in the last twenty seasons, but after doing the opposite of the Detroit Pistons by flipping the win/loss records so very fast has me (once again) pondering my fandom.
Nuggets/Thunder was marred by that play by Lu Dirt. Just my opinion, but plays like that – Brooks, Dray when they are purposefully injurious should result in suspensions. I am disappointed by OKC social media – they sound like Warrior fans and Draymond.
The draft is shaping up nicely and the strain of wanting every game to be a loss just to make sure Sacramento doesn’t end worse than 5th is wearing my patience with this team thin. I don’t even watch the games anymore. I check scores, shrug and think about what other team I should adopt. I have tickets for four more games (tomorrow, in fact). I’ll bring Ms. UtQ, she’s good company.
The draft certainly is the light at the end of the tunnel, especially if the Kings continue to lose and ensure a top 5 pick. That being said, I have zero confidence the franchise will make the right choice and then develop and build around that player. I have to think that no prospect wants to come to Sac as the future here looks so bleak, and their agents likely feel the same. Next year is shaping up to be the same as this year.
Has a rookie started with team an then demanded a trade before their first year was up? I could see that happening here next season.
Didn’t Billy Owens refuse to report to Sac after the Kings drafted him?
Yup, he held out, but I don’t think the NBA allows that anymore. I think that was also before the NBA rookie scale determined salary. He was also upset with his contract
I think Steve Francis was the last guy to make is displeasure know when he was drafted by Vancouver. He ended up getting traded before his rookie season started.
From what I understand, if you declare for the draft you agree to report to the team that drafted you. That doesn’t mean you can’t request a trade, as Francis is an example of the “newish” CBA rules.
I think the Kings are going to take the BPA, but it would not suprise me on bit of that player lets his intentions know and the Kings make a trade, sort of like how Webber got moved out of Orlando on draft night. Just a spitballed example, say the Kings land #2 but immediately after making the pick they trade it for the #5 player and a future unprotected pick, in large part because that #2 pick didn’t want to come to Sac.
This, but the #5 may not want to report either. If a drafted player sits for a year, they become a free agent. I think a high pick by the Kings might get a better contract as a free agent a year later, and they would certainly be in a better position to win games.
Is that really the rule? They can simply sit and then hit free agency? Then I could totally see a #1 pick telling the Kings to pound sand, stay home, then sign in a market like LA or NY, especially if they could make more money in UFA than the rookie scale.
I’m racking my brain if there has been a more rudderless, small market, and futureless franchise than the Kings are right now? Point being, if there were an incentive for a rookie to pull such acts, this could be the year for it with regards to the Kings, especially since all those top prospects are already millionaires thanks to NIL money.
I don’t know anything, but I believe Ace Bailey threatened to do this to the Jazz, who drafted him anyway, and he signed and reported.
With players being paid in the NCAA now, there’s less risk of losing career earnings while sitting for a year. Big collegiate stars may be making enough money for a lifetime before they even get to the NBA.
With Darryn Peterson faking injuries or whatever weird nonsense is going on there, I could see him sitting for a year to sign with the Lakers for $30 million per year rather than suffer here for years, making less money while Vivek surrounds him with washed up former stars.
I looked it up. They don’t become a free agent. If they don’t sign with their team and play pro basketball anywhere else (overseas, etc), the team retains their rights. A player would have to return to school or play no basketball for a year to have the team lose their rights, and then the player re-enters the draft. If they didn’t sign with that team – same one year rules apply – after another year they would become a rookie free agent, which still has some limitations on the contract they can sign.
Steve Francis did this when the Vancouver Grizzlies drafted him, and they ended up trading him. Francis was very much a Vivek-style player. Lot of counting stats, didn’t play defense or make his teams better.
what about this guy?
(he drops his head on the table and then the camera catches him saying “F&%^ me” after the similar to the Kings at the time, TWolves made their selection)
He got the teams he deserved!
Lots of season ticket holders are pissed today and not renewing. Kings raised the prices again for next season. Lol
Top reasons for increased ticket pricing:
I thought the savings of energy cost with the lack of Beams being lit would help???
Or…that was the plan all along.
Kings started to win, beam was being lit, Vivek’s SMUD bill shot through the roof, tear the team down to a bunch of losers, PROFIT!
It’s a solid theory.
Could be worse and have PGE bills.
Don’t forget WH ballroom donations.
LOL, wartime pricing got me.
BREAKING: Vivek trades Devin Carter, Nique Clifford, Slamson, and a future first to the U.S. Army for a fat stack of crypto war bonds!
Who needs Cash Considerations when you have Melania NFT’s to collect!
Inherited the Maloof economy is the chef’s kiss.
War bonds. A good hedge, like Maloof Bucks or Vivek crypto.
Just lose Baby.
20 games to go. Easiest schedule. Come on Kings, you can beat the odds.
There should be 8 pretty good players- the top 4 wing types and then the next 4 PG’s.
I am not a draft expert but I am as good as the guys who picked MB3, Davion over Sengun( my preference), and Carter over DaSilva. I want my chance. Peterson will be really good but is he Brad Beal or Zion with injuries? Boozer will be good but is he Milsap ? Wilson will/might be good but will he be Josh Jackson?
Every successful team needs a PG- it is hard to trade for one except if you trade with the Kings (Fox + Hali + Davion) and the free agents suck.
My preference- FWIW- AJ and then Flemings, Brown, Acuff and Wagler.
and then I would trade all the other ones- except the 3 rookies.
Don’t forget- it’s all the liberals fault. Imagine wanting to be treated like humans-fairly.
I’m one of them. I cancelled yesterday. Without knowing about the price increase. Have been a STH since 2013. Supported this train wreck well past expiration. The only thing to look forward to is a potentially high draft pick. Oh, but they are upping the discount from 15% to 25% in the Kings store next year.
A serious franchise would have a television broadcast where plays are described as they occur.
Clifford looks like a potential beast defensive specialist with solid role player potential that can score some points on occasion. Not bad considering we almost had no first round pick. They need to keep developing him and let him get used to guarding opponents best guard.
One game lead over Pacers and Nets and play 3 games against them Better lose all 3.
It’s Monday again!
Aren’t they all slight variations on the same tired “path less traveled” and “believe in yourself” tropes?
Losing 17 straight was definitely a trailblazing endeavor.
Thanks for traveling the path and showing us the way, Scotty P!
At least Monte didn’t subject us to this breakroom poster BS.
I love these.
I must stand corrected when I erroneously mentioned the Kings Broadcasts could not become any worse . It’s now worse and sillier . All stages of Kings basketball has now become Vivekian
