For those of you not familiar, I got my start as a writer at our old digs at Sactown Royalty by writing a weekly series called “the Good, the Bad and the Ugly”. I’d take a look at the week that was and other musings that struck my mind. That series ultimately led me here, more than a decade later, now having helped found our own website to talk about the Kings. And look, talking and writing about the Jenga tower of chaos and incompetence that is the Sacramento Kings for nearly 16 years wears on a person. But it’s this community of sickos that, for better or worse, love talking about and discussing this team that keeps me coming back for more year after year.
While I’m not going to fully bring back the series that got me started, I did want to start a new weekly series called the “Monday Morning Starting 5” where I have 5 topics I can muse on. It could be about the week that was, upcoming games, or just whatever comes to mind. We’re going to be doing things a little bit differently around here this season in terms of trying to offer more quality over quantity.
Back when we first started writing together over at StR, our life situations were a lot different. Free time has become a lot harder to find for all of us, and last season in particular it felt like a ton of our energy was going into the rote work of previews and recaps that frankly take a lot of effort and time and don’t really offer that much to you the reader who likely just watched the game. So for gamedays, we’ll be doing a single thread for each game like we’ve been doing for the Preseason where you can discuss the game before, during and after. For particularly memorable games, we still might do an occasional recap, but it will be more because we feel like we have to talk about it instead of simply having to do it.
This is a hobby for us after all and hopefully this frees us up to use what time we have to focus more on the actual analysis and opinion that we’re passionate about.
So with that being said, welcome to the first ever Monday Morning Starting 5! Kings basketball returns in a couple of days, so here’s five predictions I have for the upcoming season.
The Kings will be one of the worst defensive teams in the league
This is hardly the boldest prediction as the Kings have had exactly one above average defensive team (the 23-24 squad which just barely finished above average at 14th) since 2006. But I have a feeling this year is going to be particularly bad, especially in the earliest parts of the season with Keegan Murray out. Murray is this team’s best defender, and also the only real wing on the roster. Sacramento’s projected starting lineup of Dennis Schröder, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, Dario Saric? (still to be determined who starts here in place of Keegan but this is my guess for now) and Domantas Sabonis features no defender that anyone might call good, let alone elite.
The Kings have some good defenders on the roster like Keon Ellis, and perhaps Drew Eubanks, but those guys don’t seem like they’ll get enough playing time to make a ton of difference.
I don’t think this team will end up as the worst defensive team in the NBA, but I’d be willing to bet they’ll end up pretty close to it, even when Keegan comes back.
Zach LaVine is going to make an All-Star push
My feelings on the Kings acquiring Zach LaVine last summer aside, I think LaVine is going to have a very good year and put up some big numbers on what I think will be a high scoring offense. LaVine has become one of the NBA’s most efficient players over the last few years, and on high volume as well. In 74 games last season between Chicago and Sacramento, LaVine averaged 23.3 points on 51.1% from the field and 44.6% from three. Those percentages are actually identical for both his time in Chicago and Sacramento. His early stint in Sacramento had some growing pains as he was trying to feel out his role in the offense but I think now with a full training camp and offseason with a team, he’s going to take the opportunity to step up as the team’s offensive focus, as he should be.
There’s few better shooters or scorers in the NBA than LaVine, and if his efficiency is like what it was last season, I think we could see him averaging 25+ easily. Should the Kings be doing a bit better than people expect, I think LaVine will end up with some real All-Star consideration, but it might take him averaging 30 to actually make the team given how we’ve seen guys like Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox be snubbed in years past.
Nique Clifford will be the real deal
I’ve been very impressed with Nique Clifford every time I’ve gotten a chance to see him play, whether it was in Summer League or this preseason. Clifford has an advanced feel for the game (which is fitting given that he’s already 23), whether it’s where to be on offense or on finding open teammates. I think he’ll have a real spot in this rotation early on, especially with Keegan out, and I think he’ll do well with his opportunities.
Clifford was actually second to LaVine in scoring for the Kings in preseason, averaging 14.3 points on 48.8% from the field, also while averaging a team leading 4.5 assists and 1.3 steals a game.
The real X-Factor for Nique will be if he can be consistent from outside. He shot just 31.3% from three on 4 attempts a game in preseason, and the word on him in college (where he shot just around 37.7% in his last two seasons) was that he’s a bit streaky with his shot. But even if he doesn’t find that consistency this season, I still think he does enough in every other area that he’ll end up as a positive plus-minus guy for this team as a rookie.
DeMar DeRozan will be traded by the deadline
It was a bit surprising to me that DeRozan wasn’t dealt by the Kings this offseason, but it’s also unsurprising that teams aren’t willing to take on a big salary in this second-apron era for only a potential short term gain. DeRozan is an awkward fit on this Kings roster, an incredibly skilled scorer who nonetheless tends to dominate the ball and shrink the floor.
On a roster with players who can defend and shoot consistently and who only really need him to secure clutch buckets, DeRozan might fit in well, but in a featured role in Sacramento without a very complementary supporting cast he’s just a square peg in a round hole. I do think that by the time the deadline comes around though, some fringe contender team in need of a scoring punch is going to sell themselves on DeRozan being a short term solution to some of their problems. That salary won’t look as big then, especially with a majority of it unguaranteed next season, and the Kings will move on. I would legitimately be shocked if DeRozan doesn’t get dealt by the deadline.
The Kings will not make the Play-In
The Kings have been in the Play-In tournament for the past two seasons, but have failed to advance to the playoffs in either year. While I do think the Kings will still be in the Play-In hunt this year, I think they’re going to break their streak and miss out. Oklahoma City, Houston, both Los Angeles teams, Denver, Golden State and Minnesota are all teams I believe will make the playoffs. That’s seven spots right there.
That leaves three spots up for grabs.
San Antonio only won 34 games last season, but that was with Wemby missing half the season. I think with a healthy Wemby the Spurs are going to be really good. The Grizzlies won 48 games last year, but they did lose an important piece in Desmond Bane. The key for them as always is health but I think they’ll be in the Play-In picture.
The Pelicans were an absolute dumpster fire last season but also might have had the most cursed injury run I’ve ever seen. They won just 21 games despite having the roster of what feels like it should have been a Playoff team. Also, Zion is skinny now. They’ll be in the hunt.
Dallas will be without Kyrie Irving for the first part of the year, but Anthony Davis is still really good, and the Mavericks also added Cooper Flagg to an already huge frontline. This is going to be a tough team to play against, and it will get even more difficult once Kyrie is back.
Portland is another team that I could see sneaking into the Play-In picture. Chauncey Billups had them playing above .500 basketball by the end of the season as they finished the year 24-23 after starting 12-23. They also just added Jrue Holiday which will be a nice stabilizing presence in their backcourt. That leaves just the Kings, Suns and Jazz.
The Jazz are still going to be bad this season in all likelihood, but they might be fun bad now that they’ve gotten Ace Bailey. I still expect Danny Ainge to look for opportunities to unload Lauri Markkanen and Walker Kessler while seeking to land another top pick in the draft as is his M.O.
Phoenix is in a bit of a transition period. They’ve still got Devin Booker, but that’s about it. The rest of the roster is a hodge podge of vets and rookies that I don’t think is going to end up doing much this year. I expect the Kings to be better than both of those teams, but I don’t see the Kings beating out all the others to secure a playoff or even Play-In spot this season.
I feel like the Kings will end up in the 11-12 range in the West, especially if they become sellers at the deadline.

As always, Go Kings and Light the Beam. Here’s to yet another season of basketball in Sacramento.

Good decision. You must find ways to keep following and reporting on this team from burning you out.
Somewhat similar to Russ, I’m fueled by indifference. Or filled with indifference? Something like that, I guess.
I say it’s over.
These daily affirmations are something that an annoying Manager would send to staff every day. Ultimately though, it unifies the staff…in complaining about them,
I love editing these.
Shouldn’t be long before we get ( A quitter never wins and a winner never quits ) . Hope I’m wrong about this season but 11th seems about right .
Your focus can’t make up for Vivek’s stupidity.
Of course, the irony is that I can see more fans this season not watching the games and thus being more reliant on recaps. I might find myself in that boat—it’s very hard to muster the enthusiasm to pay for League Pass. But I can’t begrudge the staff here for putting less of themselves into things, especially now.
The funny thing is that I’m still excited to watch the Sharks instead, a team that’s looking like they might be the worst in the league for the third straight year. But what Vivek doesn’t understand is that a few years of pain means exciting young players who fans get really excited to watch play.
This ragamuffin group that looks like they were assembled by a kindergartner on a bender? Talk about a tough sell.
The Kings will be one of the worst defensive teams in the league
I think they will end in the bottom half of the league.
LaVine will make an All-Star push
I agree, but mostly because I just drafted him on my fantasy team!
Nique Clifford will be the real deal
Agree. He is a legit NBA rotational player.
DeRozan will be traded by the deadline
I hope so. Not because I don’t like him, but his fit just makes no sense.
The Kings will not make the Play-In
Well, we may be starting Drew Eubanks and Dario Saric for a while, so … enough said?
I’m hoping DDR is gone before the deadline, like mid-December. That groin injury has me thinking that at age 36, the tread on those tires are wearing thin. If he is healthy and producing, pick up the phone and pull the trigger because he may not be that way by February.
Remember when folks around here wanted to move Rudy Gay, then a ruptured Achilles in January not only ended his Kings career, but his value as a tradable asset.
My concern is that Demar could re-aggravate that groin even worse or have another injury which would kill whatever trade value he has and we will be stuck with him ala Kevin Huerter.
Hoping for that 4-16 start so Vivek’s hand will be forced.
Curious what you all think “Nique Clifford will be the real deal” means to you?
I set the over/under at Cisco Garcia. 10 year career, rotation player.
I like what I’ve seen so far too. I’m especially pleased with his playmaking.
Cisco feels like a good comp. If Nique, at #24 in the draft, can turn into a rotational player, it’s a win. If he becomes a legit starter that can play 3 positions, that’s an absolute home run for Perry. Time will tell, but I have tempered expectations, especially with so many others ahead of him and Kangz history of development.
My ideal hope for him is to become a solid 2 way, playmaking off guard. Think a longer and more athletic Derrick White. That would be a dream scenario.
Yeah I don’t think he’s going to be a star but I can see him being a very solid complementary player. Maybe not as good as a guy like Derrick White, but in that mold of someone who just comes in and does a little bit of everything. His playmaking is very intriguing to me too, he has a little bit of that Haliburton flair to his game on that end. I’m not expecting stardom, but I think he has a chance to be a solid starter/very good bench rotation player for his career, and I think he’s ready to help immediately.
Andrew Nembhard might be a more attainable goal, but I feel Nique has more scoring ability and Nembhard.
I should also point out that Nembhard, like Derrick White, came to the league as older players, much like Nique.
Nembhard is a good goal for Nique at Night. Hat tip to Mark Jones for the nice Jerryism. White would be awesome!
Hope he gets consistent minutes. Like 5-10 per half, but fear a lot of DNP-CDs and/or 5 minutes in the first half and nothing in the second half unless there’s garbage time.
Really need to move DDR and Monk.
It would be criminal if Doug doesn’t give Nique 15-20 minutes a night. This is a guy that Perry traded up to get by giving up full rights to an unprotected Spurs pick. He’s also a 5th year collegiate player. It’s not like he’s a 19 year old project that you took a flyer on with an already owned pick. If you are not playing him nightly then this franchise flying with a dead stick.
Second’d on DDR and Monk. Remove those temptations away from Doug and give Nique the green light.
Nique is the all-around type of player the team needs. His development needs to be in the forefront, along with Max, for this team. Let Nique play through the struggles of the rookie season, he’ll be better for it.

Hey Akis, thank you for captaining our ship of this amazing community to support our adrift franchise.
I think it’s important for everyone on here to know that the folks who put up these amazing articles and talking points have full time lives apart from TKH. If the pessimism of our community commenters is heavy enough, just imagine having to come up with article material that throws the rest of us a bone.
I love this community, especially the ones keeping the lights on!
By the way, you all can support this ship by coming a Pateron member. It’s less than a cup of coffee a month. Why support a top heavy charity that gives pennies on the dollar to starving children when you can contribute to our content creators that may buy them a beer once a month…just probably not one at Golden One because those are wicked expensive.
Not to goad/guilt anyone, but I write for this site and am a paying Patreon member. The guys that do the heavy lifting around here and the site itself deserves a little love.
That said, if your financial situation does not permit, read on, and do so guilt-free. The staff here is truly a labor of love group of lunatics.
I want to know how to get my Patreon shield to show up here. I think it’s because my Patreon email address is not the same as the one I use here.
Call it as it is: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, the Vlade, and the Vivek.
Thanks for all you guys do. Its not easy being a Kings fan. In fact, i envy the G-man in how he can stomach this franchise in all his years covering them.
I recall Aykis16 and who can forget Pick and Scroll along with the GB&U. I’ve been around for a long haul of this community and recall meeting many of you at our occasional StR meet ups (at the bar in Old Sac (O’Malley’s!) and at the games (ARCO II aka Power Balance Arena) and I wouldn’t mind seeing
manysome of you again (I kid). I even recall meeting Robbie Bigler (celebrity watch, take that!).Thank you Akis for all of the sweat, effort and time you’ve devoted to this community that appreciates you and to the team that I can only call an extended insanity, here in your home team of Sacramento.
I (the former bte now UtQ) look forward to your thoughts and analysis of the turvy-topsy team that goes A-Z of the Kings (and thus they become Kangz).
Also deep bow of respect to editors and writers of today (Will, Tony, Zack and the amazing Blake come to mind first, apologies as I know I have left out
somemany. Thank you Greg (you are not an idiot), Tom Z, the very wonderful Rob_Hessing, The Great Jerry Reynolds (I can’t write just Jerry Reynolds, he is one of a kind Great) for providing this super place for Kings/Kangz fans to rejoice, commiserate, blather, rant, laugh and feel both better and confused about cheering this sad sack franchise.Go Kings! Light the Beam!
Michael Pina of the Ringer with a brutal takedown of the Kings in his Bold Predictions article for the upcoming season.
Some lines that made me wince:
OT: did the Kings overpay for Keegan?
Looking at other extensions around the league, you have:
Christian Braun: 5/$125 = $25 per year
Dyson Daniels: 4/$100 = $25 per year
Shaedon Sharpe: 4/$90 = $22.5 per year
Toumani Camara 4/$82 = $20 per year
Aaron Nesmith: 2/$40 = $ 20 per year
So it looks like $20-$25 million per season is more or less the going rate.
Keegan got 5/$140 = $28 million per year.
So the difference doesn’t seem huge but still, it seems that with the current cap rules, every million counts. And the rule of thumb is that for a longer contract, the amount goes down a bit.
I’m not mad about the Keegan deal, and I don’t see it as a dramatic overpay, but in my view some other players have a bigger chance to outperform their contract than Keegan. Hope I am wrong.
All of those extensions came after Keegan signed his. I wonder of Keegan set some kind of bar with his deal. I would have thought Keegan would have gotten around the same as Jabari Smith Jr. at 5 years $122M. Why did Keegan get more? Who knows…savvy agent, desperate GM, Sacramento tax, etc?
I’m just glad the Kings have a young 2 way wing locked up long term.
The extra millions was to pay for a therapist to help him deal with the “shit show” that is the Sacramento Kings.
It’s to compensate for the lack of playoff money.
Yeah, a bit of an overpay. The Jabari Smith Jr. contract seems like it should have been the ceiling to me.
I wonder if it’s closer after you consider Ca taxes vs.Tx no taxes.
Good call!
If he set a bar, thenm the others would have been receiving a better deal, right.
It’s more like GM’s said LOLKangz and ignored thius deal.
I don’t disagree, but it’s annoying how much we lower our bar to be happy about something this franchise does.
One thing I got a bit of a chuckle from is that Denver let KCP walk after winning the title in large part because they didn’t want to pay him. He ended up signing for in Orlando for less than what the Nuggets just paid Braun to be his replacement.
Yes. I said years ago that Keegan’s ceiling was Harrison Barnes, and I think I might have overshot. Certainly, I did on offense. I like Keegan. But I think he’s an above average defender and an average to below average offensive player, and he’ll get NO shots on this team of shameless chuckers to prove otherwise.
As others have said, great decisions to make this more sustainable for those of you running the site and contributing articles. Articles and opportunities for comments on the King’s Herald are one of the highlights of my day, and I appreciate the work that y’all put in, and glad you’re making changes to take care of yourselves.
I applaud the decision to combine pre-game-post threads into one. Many times one of the first two was very entertaining and had to be rekindled in the following ones. Especially the Game thread.
Thanks again for all of the work on TKH! Looking forward to another year of following the Kings with y’all… and, a little less so, another year of watching actual Kings’ Basketball
Watching Lakers and warriors. These teams are ass. Kings are ass too, but they have a legitimate chance to be better than both these teams.
Your Sacramento Kings, less ass than others!
Have listened to the assorted local media and podcasts and am amused at their some what positive outlooks for this season. From this team being in playoff contention to having a record in the 30s
As a thought exercise how many of the players on this roster would make the Thunder roster. I look at the talent and upside of that team and look at this team and just wonder at the ineptness
I think OKC would take Domas for Hartenstein and Wiggins.
Keon would play for OKC. Keegan would get rotational minutes. I think if you put any of our other vets on OKC, they would move them because of culture issues.
